Peace

GRAY, SHELLEY SHEPARD
PEACE

After a year of secrets and scandal, will this Amish community finally find peace under the bright promise of Christmas?

Beth Byler has a secret. Ever since she met Englischer Chris Ellis while helping out at the Yellow Bird Inn, she can't stop thinking about him. She knows a relationship could never go anywhere—Chris was working undercover in Crittenden County as a DEA agent. That meant he faced danger daily and carried a gun, making him completely unsuitable for an Amish woman like herself. But she knew he felt the attraction, too. It was the reason he left so suddenly, promising never to see her again.

Then, three days before Christmas, while Beth is taking care of the inn, Chris returns. This time, he is bleeding and in need of a place to hide. Against her better judgment, Beth takes him in and tends to his wounds. She also promises to keep his presence a secret. Before long, it becomes clear that nothing between them has changed—a relationship is inevitable. But are they ready to sacrifice everything for this chance at love?

My Review:

Blissful sigh! We're back in Crittenden County, Kentucky with familiar characters from The Secrets of Crittenden County series that will forever hold a place in my heart. You don't need to have read the series in order to enjoy this book, but I think you'll appreciate it all the more if you have.

Gray is a master storyteller who knows how to wield a complex plot with incredible pacing and a depth of emotion. Told from multiple viewpoints, Peace brings closure to these beloved characters. And I love that each journey doesn't result in a 'perfect' peace. Gray keeps it realistic...and inspiring...by allowing her characters to find peace where they are amidst their trials. A stunning read!

Safe by the Marshal's Side

GIVEAWAY

MCCOY, SHIRLEE
SAFE BY THE MARSHAL'S SIDE

Her life is on the line

For a year, U.S. marshal Hunter Davis has protected witness Annie Delacorte and her toddler daughter. But now, someone is determined to stop Annie from testifying against the men who killed her husband. To guard Annie, by-the-book Hunter will have to break a promise to himself: to not get emotionally involved. After all, he already cares more deeply than he ever imagined for the sweet family of two…a family he'll do anything to keep safe and sound by his side.

Witness Protection: Hiding in plain sight

My Review:

This is the first in a promising new, multi-authored series and what a great introduction! While the suspense is solid, I really enjoyed the emphasis the author placed on the inner turmoil and emotional cost of being in the witness protection program. McCoy has created a relatable heroine who is struggling to hold it all together under impossible odds. Her gradual awareness of Hunter has more than a marshal doing his job just complicates her life all the more. And his struggle to remain impartial adds an additional edge to the developing romance. Cloud that burgeoning love in sinister intrigue and the result is another stellar romantic suspense from the Love Inspired line.

Force of Nature

GIVEAWAY

MENTINK, DANA
FORCE OF NATURE

Stormy reunion

Pulled from the waves and gasping for air, the last person Antonia Verde expects to be her rescuer is Reuben Sandoval. He may once have been the love of her life, but his drug-smuggling brother ruined their chance of happiness. Now with a storm blowing in, Rueben's island hotel is her only refuge. Soon they find themselves trapped on the island with a killer in the midst of a dangerous hurricane. Antonia's life is in Rueben's hands—can she trust him with her heart, as well?

Stormswept: Finding true love in the midst of nature's fury

My Review:

Mentink has an awesome imagination and I'm glad she runs with it! Here's another unique suspense in the Love Inspired line and it is such a riveting read. Not only do Rueben and Antonia have a hurricane to deal with, there's also their fractured past and a determined killer to cope with as well. Gripping doesn't begin to describe the plot adequately enough. There's plenty of twists and turns even as the hero and heroine wrestle with romantic feelings they thought were long lost. Great balance of love and suspense...both plot threads made this a devour-in-one-sitting read!

The Wyoming Heir

GIVEAWAY

RAWLINGS, NAOMI
THE WYOMING HEIR

The Cowboy in the Classroom

Given a choice, Luke Hayes wouldn't ever leave his Wyoming ranch. Yet when his estranged grandfather dies, leaving him everything, he'll travel to Valley Falls, New York—but only to collect his sister and his inheritance. He won't be roped into saving a floundering girls' school, no matter what mathematics teacher Elizabeth Wells says.

Elizabeth has defied social convention and her own family for the sake of her beloved Hayes Academy. Luke is pure rancher, from the tip of his Stetson to the scuff on his boots, yet he's also becoming her unlikely ally. Only he can help save her job and school…but how much will she lose when the time comes for him to leave?

My Review:

Rawlings has the ability to reduce this reader to a churning mass of emotions and I love it!!!! From an infuriating mother to a taciturn hero and a feisty, stubborn heroine there's angst aplenty. I enjoyed the unusual twist of rancher going east. Plucking Luke out of his comfort zone created a great platform in which to reveal his inner character. Elizabeth's past (and frankly her horrendous family) have made it difficult for her to trust so Luke has his work cut out for him. Loved watching those two skirt around the real issues as they try to deny their growing attraction. The author certainly knows how pace a romance. Rawlings has penned another winning historical.

Frame-Up

GIVEAWAY
NELSON, JILL ELIZABETH
FRAME-UP

Can she trust a mystery man?

Stranded in a blinding snowstorm, Laurel Adams must pin her hope of survival on a handsome stranger. The single mother and her teen daughter take refuge in his remote Rocky Mountain cabin. But Laurel's anything but safe when she discovers a dead body in her trunk…and becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Her rescuer, millionaire David Greene, knows what it's like to be accused. Three years ago he was arrested for a crime he didn't commit—an unsolved case that still haunts him. With the clock ticking, can they stop a cold-blooded killer with deadly ties to them both?

My Review:

I read this book while stranded in my house during a blinding snowstorm so the ambiance was great! :-)  Riveting suspense kept me turning pages at a furious pace. Loved how unique the characters are for a romantic suspense -- neither are in law enforcement of any kind. That made the read all the more edgier -- especially when you take David's past into consideration. I was captivated by the dynamics between hero and heroine...so complicated and that complication is enhanced by the slow reveal of both their pasts. The suspense is unique too, with lots of plot twists and surprising turns. A definite must read for romantic suspense lovers.

Pilgrimage : My Journey to a Deeper Faith in the Land Where Jesus Walked

GIVEAWAY

AUSTIN, LYNN
PILGRIMAGE : MY JOURNEY TO A DEEPER FAITH IN THE LAND WHERE JESUS WALKED

We all encounter times when our spirit feels dry, when doubt looms. The opportunity to tour Israel came at a good time. For months, my life has been a mindless plodding through necessary routine, as monotonous as an all-night shift on an assembly line. Life gets that way sometimes, when nothing specific is wrong but the world around us seems drained of color. Even my weekly worship experiences and daily quiet times with God have felt as dry and stale as last year's crackers. I'm ashamed to confess the malaise I've felt. I have been given so much. Shouldn't a Christian's life be an abundant one, as exciting as Christmas morning, as joyful as Easter Sunday? With gripping honesty, Lynn Austin pens her struggles with spiritual dryness in a season of loss and unwanted change. Tracing her travels throughout Israel, Austin seamlessly weaves events and insights from the Word . . . and in doing so finds a renewed passion for prayer and encouragement for her spirit, now full of life and hope.

My Review:

Kudos to the author for baring her soul in order to lift up others. Her first person narrative creates an immediate intimacy with her readers and while this is a work of non-fiction, Austin's fluid writing style reads like fiction. I was riveted from page one. She speaks to the challenge change brings and the ensuing struggle to rekindle the joy of a new believer. I think we've all encountered a season of spiritual malaise; a time when we have taken the fruits of our faith for granted.  Taking this 'virtual' journey to Israel with the author has helped renew my passion for the gospel and my appreciation for my Saviour. Austin has a real gift for bringing the scriptures to life and making them relevant for the 21st century Christian. Pilgrimage is full of profound 'revelations' that have opened my eyes and deepened my faith in numerous ways.

Chasing Hope

GIVEAWAY

CUSHMAN, KATHRYN
CHASING HOPE

A Personal Drama of Shattered Dreams and Second Chances

A talented runner fully committed to Olympic dreams, Sabrina Rice's future was shattered by a devastating diagnosis. One forfeited scholarship and several years later, she has new goals and dreams that have nothing to do with running--something that's become far too painful to think on.
Until the day she sees Brandy Philip running across the community college campus, easily outpacing security. Sabrina immediately recognizes world-class speed, and it's all the more painful that it belongs to a teenage graffiti artist. When a chance encounter brings the two young women together, Sabrina becomes Brandy's best hope for staying out of juvenile hall. Soon, Sabrina begins to feel an uncomfortable nudge that her new life is just about to be toppled...that God may be calling her to minister to this talented but troubled girl.

My Review:

This book really made a powerful impact on me. I'm grappling to put what I feel into words. Cushman has woven the tattered threads of two young women's stories into a beautiful tapestry of hope. She brings their life experiences full circle and the epilogue gave me goosebumps.

Chasing Hope is an artfully crafted testimony of the power in God's plans for us. It's gritty and real with both heroines a complex mix of strengths and weaknesses. I was really struck by Sabrina's battle to find God's purpose in her life. Like so many of us, she has difficulty understanding God's timing and that leaves her nearly missing out on a divine path. That struggle really struck home with me. There's lots of fodder for a book club discussion within the pages of this book. Chasing Hope is a stunning witness to God's far reaching power. Definitely a book not to be missed.

The Christmas Angel

GIVEAWAY

RUSSO, TINA
THE CHRISTMAS ANGEL

Beauty and her Geek.

Just in time for the holidays, a sweet novella about family, love and letting go.
He offered her his past. All he wanted was her future.

Computer security analyst, Judd Mason is sent to Colorado to find out if Samantha McBride is responsible for hacking into government facilities. What the loner techie uncovers is a family who embraces him without hesitation, and a redheaded chef who blind-sides him, turning his orderly life upside down. Judd must prove his Christmas angel is innocent so he can finally tell Samantha he loves her, and convince her that they should face the New Year, together.

My Review:

A great introduction to a new series by this popular author. Thankfully the McBride clan is large, each sibling obviously hankering for a happily ever after of their own so readers are in for a treasure trove of love and laughter in the coming months.

It's Samantha's turn for love in The Christmas Angel. Love the tag line "Beauty and her Geek". And love a hero who wears glasses. Judd is charming in a bumbling kind of way and Samantha is the whirlwind that sets his orderly world into a tailspin. And when she isn't messing with his preconceived ideas of success and happiness, the rest of the McBride family and Sam's quirky neighbours are. There's lots of love and laughter along with a poignant reminder of what is really important.

Orchard of Hope

GIVEAWAY

GABHART, ANN H.
ORCHARD OF HOPE

The smoldering embers of unrest are stirring--and even Jocie's sweet spirit can't put them out.

It's already been an eventful summer for Jocie Brooke. Little does she know, things have only just begun to heat up. Drought has gripped the quiet Kentucky town of Hollyhill and it seems as if everyone is waiting--for rain, for a fresh start, for the next step toward the future.

Into this tense haze of anticipation comes a new family, aiming to make a better life for themselves by planting an orchard on the outskirts of town. Fresh off the freedom train, Alex and Myra Hearndon are sensitive to what the color of their skin may mean in the segregated South. And even though Jocie quickly befriends the family, suspicion from both sides of the racial divide proves a formidable obstacle. Can Jocie help bridge the gap? Or will life in her quiet community fall apart at the seams?

Bestselling author Ann Gabhart invites you back to Hollyhill for a gripping tale of unexpected friendship, forgiveness, and the bright promise of a new beginning.

My Review:

A book to be savored. Jocie is back and just as captivating. She made her debut in Scent of Lilacs where she stole my heart. No need to have read the first book to enjoy this one (though I bet you'll want to after you've finished Orchard of Hope!) Perfect title, by the way. Doesn't everyone need an orchard of hope? Love the imagery in that phrase. .

Jocie is in the thick of things when racial unrest reaches her small, peaceful town. Gabhart uses her earnest teen aged innocence has a sharp contrast to the brewing unrest swirling around her. But this isn't just Jocie's story. Gabhart allows other characters to share their point of view as the tensions in a complicated plot reach a startling crescendo.  A riveting read fueled with hope in the midst of the impossible.

Silver Bells

GIVEAWAY

RANEY, DEBORAH
SILVER BELLS

Elvis croons from the radio as Christmas descends on a small Kansas town in 1971. Michelle Penn has started a new job at a tiny weekly newspaper, and the boss's son is quickly making her forget all about her former sweetheart in Vietnam. Rob Merrick felt trapped working for his father and dreams of a job with a big city newspaper. Until he met Michelle... Unfortunately, they're forbidden by office policy to date. But if Rob were to quit his job, he'd have nothing to offer. As snow blankets the town, it seems the gifts they most desire––each other––are out of reach. But then they didn't count on a small Christmas miracle.

My Review:

Strange to think that a book set in the early 70s is considered historical fiction but such is the case. If you remember the seventies, you'll get a kick out of historical references spattered through Silver Bells. There is a particularly funny scene involving the heroine's first encounter with a microwave oven. :-)

I loved the newspaper setting. It makes a great backdrop for a blossoming love story fraught with complications. But this is also a moving tale of personal growth. Michelle has left school and moved away from home. She's a little bit naive and floundering to find her place in the world. Rob likes to think of himself as more worldly wise but he's grappling with a past tragedy that has resulted in a strained relationship with his father. Angst abounds as Michelle and Rob find their way to each other.
A soul-satisfying seasonal read.

Christmas Cover-up

GIVEAWAY
EASON, LYNETTE
CHRISTMAS COVER-UP

Her stolen sister...

Seven-year-old Lucy Randall had been kidnapped in broad daylight fourteen years ago, and now Detective Katie Randall is determined to solve her sister's case. Her only option is to team up with the man whose family hates her. Former FBI agent Jordan Grey knows the beautiful cop isn't to blame for his brother's death, but he can't risk causing his parents more pain by falling for Katie. He'll have to focus on finding Lucy. But when Katie and Jordan uncover the truth, will this kidnapper turn killer?

Family Reunions: Bringing loved ones back together

My Review:

A solid case and heart-stopping suspense -- both Eason trademarks -- make this book a page turner from the get go. I have to say though, that what I really appreciate about this author is the way she manages to marry suspense and romance. It's a delicate balancing act that Eason has a gift for. She finds  a way to create intimacy between her readers and her characters while still keeping a fast-paced, action-riddled plot. But in the midst of all that suspense, I felt an emotional connection with Katie and Jordan. I basked in the romantic pauses that added depth to their story and made me a more committed reader. An exceptional read that will keep you on your toes even while curling them!

Jingle Bell Romance

GIVEAWAY

ROSS, MIA
JINGLE BELL ROMANCE

Falling For Scrooge

Julia Stanton loves Christmas—almost as much as she loves the home she's made in Holiday Harbor. So when her beloved pastor's prodigal son returns for a brief visit, she hatches a plan to keep Nick McHenry in town. Growing up as an ambassador's daughter, she's charmed countless dignitaries and surely she can get the brooding bachelor to see how much joy there is in a family-filled holiday. Julia never expects to feel the spark of something more for Nick. But it will take more than attraction to turn this handsome scrooge into her hometown hero.

Holiday Harbor: Where love is just around the bend.

My Review:

We’re back in Holiday Harbor with the second story in the series. No worries about not having read the first, Rocky Coast Romance (other than that you didn’t!), this book reads well as a standalone.
Jingle Bell Romance is a heartwarming read that explores the depth in the true meaning of Christmas. We see the miracle afresh from the eyes of the jaded hero, Nick. I love the way the author gradually opens his heart to all the wonder the season has to offer…and that includes toy shop owner, Julia.

Their romance would play out well on the big screen and I find myself yearning to watch their love story unfold in a movie. It has all the elements of that kind of classic Christmas tale – the kind that pulls at your heartstrings and offers hope. An excellent Christmas read.

The Wife Campaign

GIVEAWAY

SCOTT, REGINA
THE WIFE CAMPAIGN

Three Candidates. One Perfect Bride.

Whitfield Calder, Earl of Danning, would much rather spend a fortnight tending to his estate than entertaining three eligible young ladies. But when his valet insists that marriage is an earl's duty, Whit agrees to the house party. He has no intention of actually proposing to anyone…until flame-haired Ruby Hollingsford declares she'd never accept him anyway.

Ruby has been tricked into attending this charade, but she certainly won't compete for the earl's attentions. Yet, Whit isn't the selfish aristocrat she envisioned. And with a little trust, two weeks may prove ample time for an unlikely couple to fall headlong into love.

The Master Matchmakers: Wedding bells will ring when downstairs servants play Cupid for upstairs aristocracy

My Review:

I adore this author and love this series!!!! It’s like stepping into Jane Austen’s world with a whole new set of characters. Scott has the dialogue down pat as well as the aristocratic nuances that drive this 21st century reader mad – with delight and despair. Despair because of the pandering to class distinction and delight because her heroine, Ruby, is an ‘original’ and thankfully, so is the hero, Whit. Aptly named, by the way, because he certainly has to have his wits about him when dealing with Miss Ruby Hollingsford! Their rapid repertoire is glorious.

There’s sweet romance, loads of humour and a surprising thread of suspense within the pages of this book. Definitely the kind of mix that will carry a reader away…but beware, the jolt back to modern reality will hit you hard when you’re done.

The Women of Christmas : Experience the Season Afresh With Elizabeth, Mary and Anna

GIVEAWAY

HIGGS, LIZ CURTIS
THE WOMEN OF CHRISTMAS : EXPERIENCE THE SEASON AFRESH WITH ELIZABETH, MARY AND ANNA

God Reached Down from Heaven with the Best Gift of All
A sacred season is about to unfold for three women whose hearts belong to God.

Elizabeth is barren, yet her trust in God remains fertile. Mary is betrothed in marriage, yet she is willing to bear God’s Son. Anna is a widow full of years, yet she waits patiently, prayerfully for the Messiah to appear in the temple courts.

Following in their footsteps, you too can prepare for the Savior to enter your heart, your mind, and your life in a vibrant, new way. Best-selling author Liz Curtis Higgs explores the biblical stories of Elizabeth, Mary, and Anna, unwrapping each verse with tender care and introducing you afresh to The Women of Christmas.

My Review:

Liz Curtis Higgs is blessed with the gift of sharing testimony in a powerful and meaningful way. I wept my way through this book from sheer joy as I became even more aware of my Savior's love and acceptance. She takes a well-known story and makes it seem new. And not only that, she personalizes it by bringing events right into her readers' lives. Yes this happened centuries ago but women share a sisterhood with Elizabeth, Mary and Anna  that transcends time. A powerful affirmation that the sacred event of two thousand years ago is still relevant today.

If you can clear an hour from your busy Christmas schedule you will be blessed to watch this amazing video...
