Picture Perfect

GIVEAWAY
THOMPSON, JANICE
PICTURE PERFECT

Feisty wedding photographer Hannah McDermott has dealt with her share of difficult brides. But none can compare to the ultimate Bridezilla she's dealing with now. Still, she's trying desperately to impress Bella Neeley, Galveston Island's most sought-after wedding planner, so she can take the top spot in Bella's list of recommended photographers--a spot currently occupied by her arch-rival, Drew Kincaid. What she doesn't count on, however, is falling head over heels for the competition.

With her contagious humor and cast of quirky characters, Janice Thompson gives readers more of the bridal business drama they want in a brand-new series all about those long-suffering people who make beautiful weddings happen. Readers are desperately waiting for more of Bella and this new series brings her back in a big way, while introducing new characters fans will love. Fans will laugh out loud as they experience this breezy and entertaining novel from a great storyteller.

My Review:

Picture Perfect is the perfect book for readers who enjoy a liberal dose of humour with their romance. Thompson excels at the snappy quips and awkward moments that accompany the perilous path towards true love. Be prepared for lots of laugh out loud moments. And Bella Neely and clan (Weddings by Bella series) make liberal guest appearances throughout the story. A hearty dose of Irish proverbs add to the madcap feel of this light-hearted read. But for all the hilarity, there is a serious inspirational thread that really touched me as Hannah struggles with how to measure her value. I think many readers will relate to this heroine's issues and consequently be uplifted by her journey.

Blessing

GIVEAWAY
BEDFORD, DEBORAH
BLESSING

Her Secret Was Out...

Uley Kirkland was in a pickle. Nobody in Tin Cup, Colorado, knew that beneath her cloth cap and mining togs, she was all woman. Nobody except Aaron Brown, the handsome newcomer who, thanks to her, was now locked up in the town jail.

In a few days, Aaron would be swinging from a hangman's noose. And it was all Uley's fault. If she hadn't tackled him with a flying leap out of nowhere, he wouldn't be in this fix. Or wasting his last days on earth daydreaming about how pretty Uley would look if she ever got out of those pants and into a dress....

My Review:

I love the premise of this book -- Uley's deception is central to the plot and kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the big reveal. Her dilemma becomes Aaron's and their lives are suddenly meshed in a web of lies even while sparks fly. Their tender romance is doomed to heartache both from their own stubbornness along with their circumstances. Bedford did a masterful job of drawing out a compelling story with redemption at the heart of it. Stellar inspirational romance.

The Air We Breathe

GIVEAWAY
PARRISH, CHRISTA
THE AIR WE BREATHE

Seventeen-year-old Molly Fisk does not go outside. She's ruled by anxiety and only feels safe in the tiny tourist-town museum she and her mother run and call home. Yearning to live free but unable to overcome deep wounds from her past, she stays hidden away. Then the chance arrival of a woman Molly knew six years ago changes everything.

Six years ago, newly single Claire Rodriguez was an empty shell. Only in the unique friendship she strikes up with a young girl--a silent girl who'll only talk to Claire--does she see the possibility of healing. But one day the girl and her mother vanish, their house abandoned. What happened that drove them away? And how can Claire now offer Molly the same chance at finding a life anew?

My Review:

An amazing read that is refreshingly different. Stark honesty and gritty realism pack an emotional punch and left me lingering over plot and characters long after I'd finished the last page.  Complex story strands spin a fascinating web of desperation and hope. The point of view switches between Molly and Claire and I was riveted by how their stories intertwined.  And the Lord is at the heart of it all. An exceptional book that will fascinate you even as it affirms that no matter what 'God is in His Heaven and all is right with the world.'

The Dilemma of Charlotte Farrow

GIVEAWAY
NEWPORT, OLIVIA
THE DILEMMA OF CHARLOTTE FARROW

Charlotte Farrow, maid in the wealthy Banning household on Chicago's opulent Prairie Avenue, has kept her baby boy a secret from her employers for nearly a year. But when the woman who has been caring for her son abruptly returns him, Charlotte must decide whether to come clean and face dismissal or keep her secret while the Bannings decide the child's fate. Can she face the truth of her own past and open her heart to a future of her own? Or will life's tragedies determine the future for her?

This compelling story set against the glittering backdrop of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition captures the tension between the wealthy class and the hardworking servants who made their lives comfortable. Author Olivia Newport expertly portrays social classes while creating a story of courage, strength, and tender romance.

My Review:

An emotional white-knuckle read that deals with the inequality of women in the 19th century.

Charlotte is faced with an impossible decision to make in the midst of equally impossible, desperate circumstances. The Dilemma of Charlotte Farrow is a dilemma to end all dilemmas.  Newport deals with the complexities of class distinction and the limitations it placed on both the wealthy and the poor. It's enough to make my blood boil!

Stalwart, compassionate Archie is what all heroes should be made of -- if only Charlotte could see it that way! But her complicated past makes it difficult for her to see the possibilities in a future that isn't rife with worry and grief and grim reality. My stomach is in knots just thinking about her story. Bless Newport for successfully navigating the way to a happy ending. I found The Dilemma of Charlotte Farrow to be a gripping read from beginning to end.

Torn Loyalties

HINZE,VICKI
TORN LOYALTIES

Madison McKay doesn't trust anyone. The former military woman and owner of Lost, Inc., learned about betrayal the hard way, in work and in love. That's why she'd never let herself fall for ex-military special investigator Grant Deaver. Yet when Madison is framed for a security breach at a top secret military facility, she's forced to put her life in Grant's hands. But after she discovers that he's been deceiving her, everything will be torn apart unless Grant can convince her to trust him with her life…and her heart.

My Review:

One of the great strengths of this book is the kick-butt heroine. A war hero with gritty determination and a near inability to trust. Talk about fodder for plot-lines! Madison is a character I won't soon forget.

Grant's devotion, his steady pursuit and infinite patience with Madison is the stuff romance readers drool over. At least this one did. And he has an internal conflict that ups the angst quite a few notches.

But be prepared for a complex plot that relies on the two previous books in the series. If you haven't read them, just go with the flow at the beginning because you're given a lot of information that you won't be able to process right away. It will all come together though as the story progresses with plenty of twists and turns and confusions galore to keep your mind reeling.

The Tutor's Daughter

GIVEAWAY
KLASSEN, JULIE
THE TUTOR'S DAUGHTER

Emma Smallwood, determined to help her widowed father when his boarding school fails, accompanies him to the cliff-top manor of a baronet and his four sons. But soon after they arrive and begin teaching the two younger boys, mysterious things begin to happen. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte at night, only to find the music room empty? And who begins sneaking into her bedchamber, leaving behind strange mementoes?

The baronet's older sons, Phillip and Henry Weston, wrestle with problems--and secrets--of their own. They both remember the studious Miss Smallwood from their days at her father's academy. But now one of them finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her...

When suspicious acts escalate, can Emma figure out which brother to blame and which to trust with her heart?

My Review:

Regency meets Gothic in this exciting historical romance. Klassen gives us the ambiance of Austen's England combined with the suspense of the New Gothic genre. Think Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt. It's a winning cominbation that made The Tutor's Daughter a speed read because I couldn't put it down.

Captivating characters add layers of interest to the complex plot that kept me guessing and second-guessing until the very end. As in all of Klassen's books, I was immediately drawn back in time and found myself living every moment right along with Emma. The author's ability to engage all of a reader's senses makes each of her books a memorable read. This one is a gem from start to finish and belongs on every historical fan's TBR list.

Vanished

GIVEAWAY
HANNON, IRENE
VANISHED

Reporter Moira Harrison is new on the job in St. Louis, but she’s no rookie to investigative reporting. She knows how to dig for answers and get results. But when she hits a pedestrian on a rainy night in a wooded area—only to have both the victim and the good Samaritan who stopped to assist disappear—she turns to P.I. Cal Burke, an ex-homicide detective, to help her sort out the puzzle. Cal is more than a little skeptical of her story, especially since the police have dismissed it. But as clues begin to surface, bringing them closer to answers, the danger mounts. Because someone doesn’t want this mystery solved—and will stop at nothing to protect a shocking secret that will destroy a life built on lies.

My Review:

Complex characters create intriguing relationships that make Vanished an exceptional read. The suspense is enthralling with intricate details that gradually lead Moira and Cal closer and closer to the truth...and inevitable danger.

Hannon's pacing is impeccable. Each scene compliments the next, building steadily to a nail-biting conclusion. The romance builds steadily in a realistic way. I appreciate the time the author gave to developing Cal and Moira's relationship. I experienced the nerves, the giddy euphoria, the hesitant hope of new love right along with them.

I'm in awe of the way Hannon's mind works. The suspense details and how she threads them together kept me turning pages. This is the kind of book you want to read in one sitting. And I'm not the only one who thinks so. Amazon has just named Vanished one of the best books of the month and a top ten romance release for January. How's that for a great recommendation?

Choices of the Heart

GIVEAWAY

EAKES, LAURIE ALICE
CHOICES OF THE HEART

She thought she had left her old life behind . . .

Esther Cherrett comes from a proud line of midwives and was trained by her mother to take over the family calling. But when a terrible scandal threatens all she holds dear, Esther flees, taking a position as a teacher in the wild western mountains of Virginia. But instead of the refuge she was seeking, Esther finds herself in the midst of a deadly family feud—and courted by two men on opposite sides of the conflict. All she wants is to run away again.

But could it be that her past holds the key to reconciliation—and love?
In this gripping story of trust, deception, and bittersweet loss, you’ll discover the true meaning of choices of the heart.

My Review:

The last book in the Midwives series, Choices of the Heart delivers the same riveting historical fiction of the earlier books. This time Eakes takes up into the backwoods hill country of Virginia. I loved the setting and the way the author managed to capture the essence of it as well as the inhabitants who lived there. It kind of had a Christy feel for me.

I love the way the book unfolds -- Eakes expertly delivers tantalizing tidbits of back story in measured degrees and that kept me reading in haste to get a handle on the big picture. The scandal that Esther flees plays a big part in the way she perceives herself and in how she relates to others. I did feel a bit of a let down though when a key issue -- Esther feels the scandal is her fault -- wasn't addressed fully. She took the burden of it upon herself and nobody told her it wasn't hers to carry. Not even the hero. I kept giving her pep talks, but she paid me no mind! Very frustrating.

This is a multi-layered story with more then one mystery to solve. Even the romance is filled with suspense. Choices of the Heart is the kind of read that will quickly immerse you in another time and place. Perfect for these long, cold winter evenings.

Detection Mission

DALEY, MARGARET
DETECTION MISSION

Who is she? While looking for a missing child in Sagebrush, Texas, K-9 detective Lee Calloway and his border-collie partner find someone else. A mystery woman running for her life, scared and injured. But she has no idea who she is—or why someone is after her. Lee's unit suspects "Heidi" is a criminal who knows more than she's saying, yet his gut instinct says she's innocent. Lee vows to protect her until her memory returns, but now someone is desperate to ensure that never happens.

My Review:

Detection Mission is the second in Love Inspired's new Texas K-9 Unit series. Each book is written by a different author and the series runs for five consecutive months. I missed the first one, but I'll gladly play catch up and make sure I order the rest because I love the concept! It provides a unique (and warm fuzzy) twist to a suspense.

Daley does a fantastic job with this page turner. I found myself in a reading frenzy as she tossed clues and red herrings my way at an alarming pace. Gripping doesn't begin to describe the plot and the romance is sweet. Throw in a canine superhero like Kip and his stalwart partner, Lee and my heart is palpitating for so many reasons! And my dog, Simba gives Detection Mission the highest honour of four paws up! Finally, a dog story he could sink his teeth into!

The Lesson

GIVEAWAY
FISHER, SUZANNE WOODS
THE LESSON

In her wildest dreams, spunky and impulsive nineteen-year-old Mary Kate Lapp never imagined herself behind a schoolteacher’s desk. A run-in (literally) with the schoolteacher compels her to act as a substitute teacher, just as her restless desire to see the world compels her to apply for a passport . . . just in case. The only thing of interest to M.K. in the sleepy Amish community of Stoney Ridge is the unexplained death of a sheep farmer that coincided with the arrival of a mysterious young man into the community. Frustrated that no one takes the crime seriously, she takes matters into her own hands. Unfortunately, as tends to be the case for M.K., she jumps headlong into trouble.

Centered on one of Suzanne Woods Fisher’s most loved characters, this is the story fans have eagerly anticipated. The precocious M.K. is all grown up (well, almost) and ready to take on the world–with surprising results. Fisher’s trademark plot twists and turns are as unexpected and satisfying as ever in this third book in the Stoney Ridge Seasons series.

My Review:

I've been anxiously awaiting this book for months because it stars one of my favourite characters ever! I adored young Mary Kate in the previous two books of the series and will admit to wondering if Fisher could deliver as delectable a character in M.K. the woman as she did with M.K. the girl. I mean Mary Kate was so larger then life, so funny and exasperating and maverick -- she stole every scene she was in in the previous books. How could all that translate into a young Amish woman's love story?

In a word -- Beautifully.

Mary Kate is still a lovable character with an opinion about absolutely everything. Snap judgements are still her speciality and they continue to get her into lots of hot water. So much hot water!!!! I thrilled over every word.

The Amish community is rich and vibrant -- and long suffering where Mary Kate is concerned and readers familiar with the Stoney Ridge Seasons will happily welcome other endearing characters -- like Fern. I just smile thinking of that salt-of-the-earth housekeeper turned middle-aged bride. But don't worry -- if you haven't read the series, you'll still enjoy the book. The Lesson reads well as a standalone, but it has a real kick if you've read the others.

So grab a book anyway you can and prepare yourself for a wild ride, Mary Kate style. Think whirlwind, whimsical, whirling dervish. You won't be able to catch your breath until you reach the end.

To Honor and Trust

GIVEAWAY
MILLER, JUDITH
PETERSON, TRACIE

Callie DeBoyer is unsettled as she arrives at Bridal Veil Island with the Bridgeport family. She’s just received a letter from her parents, missionaries in coastal Africa, stating they are in dire need of more personnel. Should Callie give up her governess job and join her parents in their important work? Is God calling her to the mission field, or does she just want to escape the emotional scars of being jilted by her former beau?

When she enrolls young Thomas Bridgeport in golf lessons, Callie meets Wesley Townsend, who urges Callie to take lessons, as well. During their time at the golf course, Callie comes to care for Wesley–until she discovers hidden secrets about his past.

Then expensive jewels go missing from various homes on the island, and suspicion is aimed in Callie’s direction. As the investigation continues, Callie wonders if she should escape it all by going to Africa. After the secrets he kept about his past, will Wesley ever be a man she can honor and trust for the rest of her life?

My Review:

I think this is my favourite book in the Bridal Veil Island series but having said that, it reads beautifully as a standalone. These authors know how to seep a story in history so effectively that the reader feels she's traveled back in time. It is so true to life right down to the dialogue. I love that!

I really connected with Callie's dilemma -- she has a multitude of choices available to her, but which one is the right one? She wants to follow God's call for her life, but she doesn't feel God is making her decisions easy. In fact, He seems to be silent on the subject. I've felt like that so many times in my life. Impatiently yearning for a burning bush answer instead of waiting on God's timing to reveal Himself.

As if that isn't enough, the authors throw in handsome and attentive Wesley Townsend just to confuse things even more. And a mystery that threatens to steal away all of Callie's choices. A compelling, thought-provoking read that will keep you turning pages right until the very end.

The Marshal Meets His Match

GIVEAWAY
DEES, CLARI
THE MARSHAL MEETS HIS MATCH

In a world of marriage-minded females, Meri McIsaac is steadfastly single. She's happiest riding on her father's ranch. At least until the town's new marshal startles her and causes her to fall—literally—at his feet. Then he has the gall to implicate her ranch in a bank holdup, turning her entire life upside down.

This is the woman the local matchmaker thought he should meet? Meri is stubborn and headstrong as a mule. Yet he recognizes her courage and loyalty, too, and the grief she carries over her mother's passing. And if he can protect her from a criminal desperate to cover his tracks, he'll prove that risking her heart could be the greatest adventure yet.

My Review:

Rollicking fun doesn't begin to describe this memorable historical romance by debut author Clari Dees. Meri and the Marshal's first meeting is hilarious. There's snap and sparkle in every scene they share. I love Dees' sense of humour. Catchy dialogue provided lots of laugh-out-loud moments and still has me grinning. But  tender and thoughtful moments abound as well which makes for a winning combination. This new author can't publish books fast enough for me!
