When Love Calls

GIVEAWAY

SEILSTAD, LORNA
WHEN LOVE CALLS

When romance calls, will she choose to answer?Hannah Gregory is good at many things, but that list does not include following rules. So when she must apply for a job as a switchboard operator to support her two sisters, she knows it won't be easy. Hello Girls must conduct themselves according to strict-and often bewildering-rules, which include absolutely no consorting with gentlemen while in training.

Hannah doubts it will be difficult to keep that rule-until a handsome young lawyer starts getting under her skin.

With historic details that bring to life the exciting first decade of the twentieth century, Lorna Seilstad weaves a charming tale of companionship that blossoms into sweet romance.

My Review:

First, take a moment to soak in that cover. Isn't it delectable? Doesn't it beckon you to flip through the pages? And when you do, you'll be well and truly caught up in the chaotic lives of the Gregory sisters.

This is the first book in Seilstad's new Gregory Sisters series and it's a grand introduction. I have to admit that all the sisters grabbed hold of my heart, but it is the youngest, Tessa, that I'm looking forward to reading about the most. Alas, she is only fourteen in this novel, so I guess she has some growing up to do before she gets a romance of her own.

Seilstad researches her books thoroughly and I'm always thrilled to discover the bizarre snippets of history she loves to include in her stories. The Hello Girls angle is absolutely fascinating! They had such rigid (and ridiculous) rules and when the author pits a rule-breaking heroine against them...well, magic happens.

Seilstad turns a deft hand at combining drama and comedy along with a sweet inspirational thread that makes this a memorable and rewarding read. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Finding God in the Dark : Faith, Disappointment and the Struggle to Believe

KLUCK, TED
MARTIN, RONNIE
FINDING GOD IN THE DARK : FAITH, DISAPPOINTMENT AND THE STRUGGLE TO BELIEVE

An That's hard to remember in the face of disillusionment or heartache. Unbelief and doubt are buried deep within us, especially when we question God's goodness in the face of loss and abandonment. Ted Kluck's world was turned upside down after experiencing a failed adoption, where he found himself propelled into a year of doubt and disillusionment. Ronnie Martin struggled with the kind of identity and idolatry issues that come with being a well-known recording artist, before the unexpected death of his father allowed those sins to be brought to the surface of his heart. It is in the midst of these and other everyday stories that we learn how God reveals His boundless grace to every one of us.

Whether you've lost someone you loved, suffered career failure, or simply been let down by a fellow Christian, it's natural to wonder whether God has forgotten about you. You're not alone. But as a believer, you can trust that overcoming individual challenges will prepare you for a greater purpose. Kluck and Martin's raw revelations about their mistakes and disappointments will help you on your own journey to finding God when you're standing in the dark.

My Review:

A challenging subject to be sure and kudos to the authors for being authentic in their sharing of personal stories to illustrate their point. I found myself startled at times, by sweeping statements, judgements really, about an individual or a group of people which weren't always resolved. That left me feeling unsettled and looking for the light in the message.

Both authors have distinctive contrasting writing styles, which I felt a bit jarring as the perspective yoyoed back and forth. While I feel that it is extremely important to acknowledge that Christians do struggle with faith in the midst of affliction and I appreciated the authors honesty, I found there wasn't a solid enough counter point of view to balance their dark memoirs.  As a reader, I empathized with the authors, feeling their pain and hopelessness and was encouraged by the scriptures and comments, especially in the second half of the book. I just wish the authors had taken it deeper.

A slim volume, Finding God in the Dark could definitely be used as a springboard for discussion but I would hope that participants would be able to add more insights towards solutions that might help those struggling in dark places.

My Review:

I couldn't find a place to breathe reading this book. There was some serious hyperventilating going on at my house as I devoured every page. The action doesn't stop from the startling first scene until the very last one. Lots of detail and a solid suspenseful plot are balanced by a romance born from a past friendship. This is one thrill of a read that romantic suspense lovers won't want to miss.

The Heiress of Winterwood

GIVEAWAY
LADD, SARAH E.
THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD

Darbury, England, 1814

Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.

When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.

Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

My Review:

I'm in a swoon of Regency euphoria! What a brilliant debut novel! Ladd has a lovely, flowing style -- lots of gorgeous historical details and I think she got the time period's conversation just right. The combination catapulted me into history and I do so love getting lost in a book!

Ameila is a determined (alright, stubborn), heroine. I loved the contrast between her behaviour and the 'acceptal' deportment of a young lady in that time period. And Graham doesn't know what to make of her!

An added suspense element really gives this story a kick and I found myself in rabid-reader mode which led to a near sleepless night just so I could reach the end in a timely fashion! If you love Regency, this just might be the next book for you!

The Dance

GIVEAWAY
WALSH, DAN
SMALLEY, GARY
THE DANCE

Jim Anderson is a successful businessman, and his wife, Marilyn, is the perfect wife. And why wouldn't she be? He gives her everything she needs. That's why Jim never expected to come home one day and find Marilyn gone.

After 27 years of marriage, Marilyn has had enough of feeling unloved and neglected. She wants to experience some measure of happiness before she's too old to enjoy it, even signing up for dance lessons, something Jim would never do. What will it take for Jim to finally become the man Marilyn needs him to be?

Combining the literary talents of bestselling author Dan Walsh and the relationship expertise of bestselling author Gary Smalley, The Dance is the first novel in The Restoration Series. Readers will get caught up in these flawed but sincere members of the Anderson family as they rediscover genuine love and start a transformation that ultimately affects all of them.

My Review:

What a fantastic read! Walsh and Smalley make a great team and give their readers a realistic snapshot of a struggling marriage and the fallout that ensues. There's depth and insight and some really funny moments -- at least they were to me. Poor clueless Jim, not quite sure why Marilyn has left him . Only a man could get away with portraying some of those scenes. A female author would have been accused of stereo-typing.

The authors did a great job of  converting me into a Jim fan. I didn't think it would be possible at the beginning of the book but Jim's conversion into a gentler, softer more spiritual self makes for a moving read. Even as Marilyn stays prickly and defensive almost to the very end. The couples dynamics is dead-on. This could easily be used in a couples therapy course.

The Dance is fiction though, and it makes a rewarding and thought-provoking read. Memorable characters, a tight plot and dashes of humour to break up the angst all contribute to a wonderfully satisfying read.

The Gate

STOUTEN, DANN
THE GATE

When an ad for a vacation cottage catches the eye of a man on the edge of burnout, he impulsively sets off to visit the property while his wife and daughters are away. When he arrives and is ushered through the gate, he finds something far different from the typical vacation retreat. In fact, it seems he may have found the back door to heaven. The proprietor and people from his past welcome him with food, rest, and conversation until what started out as a little escape from everyday life turns into an experience he will never forget.

This imaginative novel explores the big questions we all have about what lies beyond this earthly life. Readers hungry for a taste of heaven will find in The Gate hope, encouragement, and pure joy.

My Review:

A man steps out of time and experiences a period of introspection as he seeks guidance from deceased people from his past as well as God and the Savior. Reminiscent of The Shack, without the deep grittiness, The Gate is a modern-day parable. Readers are required to explore the content and meaning of each encounter. A slow-paced, descriptive narrative based on recollections, I found The Gate to read more like a non-fiction devotional then a story. The author has a degree in narrative preaching and it does shine here but left me feeling as if I'd just read a sermon as opposed to a work of fiction.

When Lydia and Micah's paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other's callings. Through unforeseen twists and turns, they seek a refuge of safety--for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God unexpectedly puts in their lives.

My Review:

This sweet romance comes with a multitude of complications that Sawyer expertly weaves amidst the backdrop of World War II. Sweet Sanctuary is a stirring story with many unexpected turns that piqued my interest and held my attention. The inspirational thread is prominent, present in nearly every scene and affects the lives of both the hero and heroine as well as numerous secondary characters. A powerful witness to Christ's redeeming love.

The Prodigal Son Returns

GIVEAWAY

DREXLER, JAN
THE PRODIGAL SON RETURNS

From her first glimpse of his big-city suit, Ellie Miller knows Bram Lapp is trouble. The handsome Englischer says he wants to reclaim the life he left long ago. Even if his smile disarms her, all of Ellie's energy must go to her children and their struggling farm…and to atoning for her mistakes.  A criminal's trail has brought FBI informant Bram to Ellie's warm and welcoming Indiana community. Now he's posing as the kind of man he once hoped to be. Someone steadfast and upright. Someone who might be worthy of Ellie. Because no matter how much she claims she doesn't want a second chance at love, he knows he's found the home they were meant to share.

My Review:

Woohoo, I've found me a new favourite Amish author! Drexler has a wonderful writing style. Her words flow smooth and polished and I savored every word.

The unusual time period (1936) was a real hook for me as was the FBI angle in Bram's plotline. But it was the pulse of the Amish lifestyle that kept me reading.  This is a magical story about loss and love and the power of God to heal and bless in all the places of your life.

The connection between Bram and Ellie is immediate and volatile...on Ellie's side anyway. Loved how the author played them against each other, drawing out the romantic tension until I was rabidly hanging on to every word, aching for more.

The Prodigal Son Returns is an amazing debut novel and I'm praying that Jan Drexler has many more stories in the works for her soon to be legions of loyal fans.

The Lawman's Second Chance

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
THE LAWMAN'S SECOND CHANCE

Love In Bloom

After losing his wife to cancer, Lt. Alexander Steele vowed he'd protect himself and his children from that kind of loss again. But that was before he laid eyes on Lisa Fitzgerald. She welcomes him to town and immediately connects with his shy daughter, Emma. Yet Lisa is a cancer survivor herself, and so a reminder of everything Alex and his family suffered. Will a relationship with her be too much for him to bear? With their love growing even faster than Lisa's beautiful gardens, Alex has to decide whether he can risk his heart once more.

My Review:

This book kept me up until 1:00 a.m. because there wasn't a good place to stop reading and I just had to finish it! A beautiful story on so many levels. The author did the subject matter absolute justice -- with such compassion and humour and heart-tugging honesty.

I lost a very dear friend to breast cancer so this was an emotional read for me. I still get chills thinking about the lovely ways Herne's characters celebrated life and reverenced the memories of those who had lost the fight. That alone made it a wonderfully rewarding read.

Toss in three of the most adorable kids ever, an emotionally wounded hero who finds love in spite of himself and a heroine willing to make sacrifices for those she loves. Add Herne's outrageous humour. Blend with a hefty dose of heartwarming. And top the whole thing off with a thought-provoking inspirational thread and you have the perfect recipe for hours of reading enjoyment -- if you can make it last that long! The Lawman's Second Chance moved me and blessed me and comforted me. I hope it will do the same for you.

The Survivor

GIVEAWAY

MILLS, DIANN
THE SURVIVOR

Is it her next bestseller . . . Or her last words? In The Chase, award-winning author DiAnn Mills introduced you to the world of Kariss Walker, the bestselling suspense author with a nose for trouble. In The Survivor, Kariss gets the chance to tell her most powerful story yet. But will it revitalize her writing career? Or bring it to a violent end?
Kariss meets Dr. Amy Garrett, who survived a brutal childhood attack in which the assailant was never found. Now Dr. Garrett wants her story written in a novel. Kariss wishes she could seek the advice of Special Agent Tigo Harris, but she broke off the relationship a few months prior and seeing him again would be too painful. She interviews Amy and conducts her own research, stepping unaware into danger.
Tigo misses Kariss and wants her back, but he understands why she broke off their relationship. Instead, he concentrates on solving a car bombing and bringing the killer to justice. As Kariss's new story attracts an onslaught of danger that she never expected, can Tigo save the woman he loves and find out who wants her dead for writing about an unsolved cold case?

My Review:

I have never wanted to throttle a heroine more! Kariss has a stubborn streak just bordering on the edge of arrogance! I wanted to shake her until her teeth rattled! I guess that means the author definitely engaged me. :-)

Mills has the uncanny ability to weave seemingly disparate threads into an amazingly rich tapestry.  I'm in awe over how she managed to skillfully blend two separate plots into a crescendo of a climax. You'll want x-ray eyes in order to get to the bottom of this stellar suspense in record time.

And  The Survivor is gritty and realistic in every way -- including throughout the inspirational thread. Mills tackles age old questions and struggles and doesn't shy away from showcasing the imperfections in a believer.

An all round stunning suspense that will hold you hostage until you reach 'the end'.

Explosive Secrets

GIVEAWAY

HANSEN, VALERIE
EXPLOSIVE SECRETS

Implicated by her criminal cousin, Nicki Johnson is now the target of a murderous gang. Dark-haired policeman Jackson Worth thinks she is hiding something, but his remarkable bomb-sniffing dog has no such reservations. He's there to protect her—no judgments, no questions.

And Jackson is a man of honor. He'll stand by this beauty and her unborn child. Because it is the right thing to do. And because guarding her has left his battle-scarred heart open to the possibility of love. Which changes everything…

My Review:

We're getting deeper and deeper into the complex series-length suspense and I'm dying to know who The Boss is! Hansen does a great job of writing her own unique story while juggling clues and characters from the previous four books in the Texas K-9 Unit series. It's all culminating in the big reveal in a couple of months.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series -- love the K-9 angle and the fact that every book highlights a different service dog. So yes, while I love the heroes and heroines, it's the dogs that steal my heart every time. Titan, a black lab, plays a great supporting role in this story. How can anyone resist a bomb-sniffing dog with PTSD?!

Nicki and Jackson's love story has a rocky start and a next to impossible premise. Nothing like throwing the impossible at two characters and then sitting back to see what happens.Trepidation and regrets, uncertainty mixed with longing. The romantic thread is pulled as tautly as the suspense in this page-turner.

Love At Any Cost

GIVEAWAY

LESSMAN, JULIE
LOVE AT ANY COST

He's looking to take care of his family. She's looking to take care of her heart.
Trouble is . . . love's looking to take care of them both.

Cassidy McClare is a spunky Texas oil heiress without a fortune who would just as soon hogtie a man as look at him. Jilted by a fortune hunter, Cassidy travels west hoping a summer visit with her wealthy cousins in San Francisco will help her forget her heartache. But no sooner is she settled in beautiful California than Jamie McKenna, a handsome pauper looking to marry well, captures her heart. Can love prevail when Jamie discovers that Cassidy is poorer than he is? And can Cassidy ever learn to fully trust her heart to a man?

Bestselling author Julie Lessman brings the delectable Gilded Age to life in this sumptuous new series. Join your favorite romantic storyteller as she moves to the hills of San Francisco for more romance, passion, and surprising revelations.

My Review:

Someone should report Julie Lessman for Cruelty to Characters! She certainly knows how to put them, and subsequently her readers, through the wringer. But that's what I love about the whole Julie Lessman experience -- emotional overload with a happy ending. Though, let me tell you  I couldn't predict how that could even be possible in this book! Lessman throws a few major curve balls into the plot that left me with heart palpitations and gasping for air! I love when an author surprises me like that!

Cassidy is such a fun, spunky, wonderful heroine. Loved her from the minute I met her and lived every second of her story right along with her. Not always a comfortable ride, but exhilarating nonetheless.

Jamie is the perfect flawed hero -- a man who doesn't grasp that what he perceives as weakness is really strength until it is very nearly too late.

Warning -- you might want to wear asbestos gloves while reading Love at Any Cost because sparks fly from Cassidy and Jamie's first meeting and continue to sizzle right to the very end. I'm sure the author wouldn't want any of her devoted fans to get singed!

Lessman captures the essence of the time period with vivid descriptions that propel the reader through time. She has an amazing gift for painting pictures with words while not bogging the story down with details. Words flow, pouring out a compelling plot that will keep you distracted from the real world until you are done. Be prepared for a marathon read.

And, as with all Lessman's books, a profound inspirational message lies at the heart of the story. It touched me as I am sure it will all her readers. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in this new series...and have to admit to being heartily relieved to discover that I adore the McClares just as much as I do the O'Connors.
