A Noble Groom

GIVEAWAY

HEDLUND, JODY
A NOBLE GROOM

Michigan, 1880

Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.

So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.

Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher--or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.

With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming--unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

My Review:

I never thought I'd ever say this in a review -- but here goes. Hedlund is such a master at her craft that she even had me swooning over a nitpicking scene. Seriously. Now that's romantical talent!!!!!

A rich, compelling story filled with the realistic and gritty details the settlers faced every day. Made me take stock of my 21st century complaints and vow to get over myself! I'm not sure I would have survived as a pioneer woman at the turn of the century. Especially a poor German immigrant one who has no say in her future because she is female.

What an incredible read! Hedlund played havoc with my emotions from start to finish. From being in the depths of despair for Annalisa to experiencing heart palpitations over Carl I was a bit of an emotional wreck by the end.

One amazing read!!!!!!

  6. Kav, this is one of the best books I've read in a while as well. I LOVED Carl. Loved him!!! Enjoyed your review, especially the "get over myself" because yes, I thought that too. Especially with the wood chopping. That was one of my favorite scenes. When Carl thinks "no sane person does this amount of work in a year, much less a day" haha.

Please don't enter me in the drawing. I already have this book. I just like looking at the cover and remembering all those great moments.

  8. Ah -- the wood chopping scene. I remember it well. :-) I really liked the way Hedlund made Carl 'real' -- not this brawny hero who could do anything and never sleep. I felt his fatigue and his blisters!

Oh Lori -- you must read Jody's books. Good luck -- maybe this will be your chance!
