Unspoken

GIVEAWAY

HENDERSON, DEE
UNSPOKEN

Charlotte Graham is at the center of the most famous kidnapping in Chicago history.

The task force of FBI and local cops found her two abductors, killed them, rescued her, but it took four very long years. The fact she was found less than three miles from her home, had been there the entire time, haunts them. She's changed her identity, found a profession she loves, and rebuilt her life.

She's never said a word--to the cops, to her doctors, to family--about those four years.
A family legacy has brought her back to Chicago where a reporter is writing a book about the kidnapping. The cops who worked the case are cooperating with him. Her options are limited: Hope the reporter doesn't find the full truth, or break her silence about what happened. And her silence is what has protected her family for years.

Bryce Bishop doesn't know her past, he only knows she has coins to sell from her grandfather's estate--and that the FBI director for the Chicago office made the introduction. The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy. She's not giving him much of an opening to work with.

Charlotte wants to trust him. She needs to tell him what happened. Because a crime cops thought was solved, has only opened another chapter...

My Review:

A stunning, complex novel that lingers with me still.

First, a gentle warning to Henderson fans: This is not the O'Malleys. And that's totally okay. Fine actually. But I have read some reviews that expressed disappointment over the different tone in this book and I just think readers shouldn't dive into Unspoken with any false assumptions.

Henderson's trademark complexity and deep characterization will tantalize readers from the get go. I love the way she develops a romance in slow, measured steps -- friendship first until the connection grows in depth and breadth.  This is very much the case in Unspoken as, unlike most suspense novels, the time line covers more than a year.

Layers of suspense are expertly entwined within this complex story -- two cold cases vie for supremacy over Charlotte's secrets. The unraveling of her mystery is achingly slow and kept me anxiously turning pages. Henderson is an expert at pacing and doesn't hurry through a single scene in this 400+ page novel and that is fine by me.

In a unique twist, the author writes from multiple points of view, but very rarely from the heroine's. This really increases the mystery behind the woman and readers get to discover her right along with Bryce. And can I just say that I have rarely met such a gallant hero as Bryce Bishop? A true gentleman with the heart of a Believer. His gentle pursuit of Charlotte still gives me goosebumps.

If you like depth in your characters and an unhurried plot that allows you time to savor all the exquisite elements of the read then Unspoken is the book for you.

Sidenote: Here's a link to the book trailer. Honestly, the best one I've ever seen. It totally captures the mood of the book. Take a peek:

    1. Abbi, it's along a similiar vein as Full Disclosure. In fact Paul and Ann are in this book quite a bit as well. Definitely not your usual action packed supsense read, but I did enjoy it. Good luck!

  9. This sounds like a great book I'd very much like to read. Thanks for the chance to win Unspoken. I've read all of the O'Malley series but that was quite a few years ago so I doubt I'd compare them to this.

  19. I know this is over, but I just wanted to comment-- what a WONDERFUL review! I love Dee Henderson as an author. She writes wonderfully complex mystery/suspense books and I am always amazed.

I am actually in the middle of reading this book and after reading this: "And can I just say that I have rarely met such a gallant hero as Bryce Bishop? A true gentleman with the heart of a Believer. His gentle pursuit of Charlotte still gives me goosebumps." in your review... I really can't wait to get on with the book!! I have had to read bits and parts between reading other required reading, so now I am really looking forward to reading this book!! Thanks for such a wonderful review.
