Motive for Murder

GIVEAWAY

POST, CAROL J.
MOTIVE FOR MURDER

Deadly Homecoming

Only her estranged sister's suspicious death could bring Jessica Parker back to her hometown. Investigating Priscilla's life leads Jess nowhere. Someone is dead set against her uncovering anything, and soon enough, she's being anonymously threatened. Her only hope is a man who asks more questions than he'll answer.

FBI agent Shane Dalton may have the answers Jessica needs, but he can't risk his cover, no matter his feelings for the beautiful brunette. They'll have to rely on each other if they want the truth -- and future -- they never thought possible.

My Review:

A riveting suspense. Loved the realistically flawed heroine. Jessica is a product of her upbringing and though she has come a long way she is still rough around the edges. Tough, independent, wary. Shane doesn't quite know what to make of her. Their first meet is tense...and hysterical in a twisted kind of way. :-)  Motive for Murder has a page-turning, suspenseful plot, liberally dosed with romance which makes it an excellent read. Love Inspired Suspense hits it out of the ballpark again!

Treacherous Slopes

GIVEAWAY

REED, TERRI
TREACHEROUS SLOPES

Killer competition

A champion ski jumper, Nick Walsh wants one thing: to win the gold for his late brother. Nick has always blamed himself for his family's tragic loss -- and so does everyone else. To complicate things, sweet and shy reporter Julie Frost insists on doing a story about him. But as Nick gets closer to achieving his dream, someone will do anything to stop him. Somehow, Nick must keep Julie from getting too close as they confront a threat that can destroy them both. Julie and Nick are on the verge of a threat that can destroy them both. Julie and Nick are on the verge of discovering the truth about his brother's death...unless an unknown murderer finds them first.

My Review:

A great book to get you in the mood for the Olympics! The author captures the spirit and drive of the games and that adds an extra thrill to the read.

As the suspense builds, so does the attraction between Julie and Nick. Both threads are stretched taut and made this book an I-couldn't-put-down read. I like the fact that neither Julie or Nick are in law enforcement. Reed gives her readers a fresh perspective by creating fairly unique occupations for the romantic suspense genre -- a professional athlete and a reporter.

Treacherous Slopes is a perfect example of why Terri Reed has become a go-to Love Inspired author for me. Definitely worth putting at the top of your TBR pile.

Critical Pursuit

GIVEAWAY

CANTORE, JANICE
CRITICAL PURSUIT

Officer Brinna Caruso has built a reputation at the precinct as the cop to call when a child goes missing. For Brinna, it’s personal because she was once one of them. Brinna and her K-9 search and rescue dog, Hero, will stop at nothing to find a missing child, no matter the stakes.

Detective Jack O’Reilly isn’t ready to return to his homicide duties, after losing his wife to a drunk driver. He’s on the downside of his career, and bent on revenge, when he’s assigned as Brinna’s partner. While on patrol, Jack struggles between his quest for personal justice and his responsibility to those around him, especially his partner.

Skeptical of Jack’s motives, Brinna isn’t sure she can rely on her new partner, whose reckless abandon endangers the safety of those around him. But when a man surfaces with an MO similar to the criminal who abducted Brinna twenty years earlier, Brinna and Jack must cast aside previous judgments and combine efforts to catch the kidnapper, and finally allow Brinna the peace stolen from her as a child.

My Review:

Great suspense! Cantore is a new-to-me author -- I missed her first three-book series but I'm thrilled to be at the beginning of her next series. Her 22 year police service really shows in this gripping suspense. It's in the dialogue between officers, the detailed  inner workings of the precinct even in the alert codes from the patrol officers. It brings a different kind of edge to an already on-the-edge-of-your-seat read.

While I labeled this a romantic suspense I need to clarify that this is a continuing series where the romance will develop more through each book. Critical Pursuit is all about getting to know Jack and Brinna -- and about them getting to know each other. I really appreciate that deep characterization. Both come with baggage from painful pasts and their struggle to find balance in just living is truly inspiring. There is also a solid inspirational thread that doesn't wrap up in a neat little bow by the end of the book. Both Brinna and Jack's spiritual journey is gnarly and fraught with setbacks -- even bitterness. Very true to life as well. I loved the honesty portrayed in their battle and the steadfast Christian characters who don't preach, but don't back down either.

A great read for suspense lovers who like a healthy dose of reality in their fiction.

Please note: This is a re-release of an original publication from 2007 entitled The Kevlar Heart.

All Things Hidden

GIVEAWAY

PETERSON, TRACIE
WOODHOUSE, KIMBERLY
ALL THINGS HIDDEN

Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse Team Up to Deliver a Stunning Depression-Era Drama

Gwyn Hillerman loves being a nurse at her father's clinic on the beautiful Alaskan frontier. But family life has been rough ever since her mother left them, disdaining the uncivilized country and taking Gwyn's younger sister with her.

In Chicago, Dr. Jeremiah Vaughan finds his life suddenly turned upside down when his medical license is stripped away after an affluent patient dies. In a snowball effect, his fiance breaks their engagement. In an attempt to bury the past, Jeremiah accepts Dr. Hillerman's invitation to join his growing practice in the isolated Alaska Territory.

Gwyn and Jeremiah soon recognize a growing attraction to each other. But when rumors of Jeremiah's past begin to surface, they'll need more than love to face the threat of an uncertain future.

My Review:

An intriguing 'exotic' setting sets the stage for this historical drama. The authors have expertly blended fact and fiction in order to deliver a riveting plot centred around the 1935 colonization of Alaska. This was a piece of American history I didn't know about and found it incredibly fascinating.

Gwyn and Jeremiah's gentle love story is fraught with complications in a twisty turny plot packed with lots of surprises...including an unexpected suspense thread. Story arcs build and grow until they practically explode off the page at the climax. A wonderful meshing of two talented authors who clearly compliment each other.

Today Is the Day to Live Your Dreams
We all have dreams God has placed in our hearts, but many things keep us from fulfilling them. Fear of failure, insecurity about our financial situation, self-doubt, and more erode those ambitions until they are little more than pipe dreams. But Bil Cornelius is here to tell you that today is the day you are going to start reaching your full potential.

With upbeat encouragement, Cornelius motivates you to make your dreams reality by helping you set goals, focus your time and energy, develop your unique gifts, steep everything in prayer, and take action that God will bless.

You can achieve all that God has set in your heart--starting now!

My Review:

Easy to read and well organized, this book is a great catalyst to help you see this year's New Year resolutions through to the end of 2014.  From helping the reader recognize their own God-Given dreams to providing the support to follow through on them, this step by step guide is sure to get results.

I found the action steps at the end of each section really useful. They helped solidify what I'd read on the topic and enabled me to create concrete plans one step at time. The authors illustrate points with examples from personal experience as well as biblical references. A great combination that encouraged me on an emotional level.

An inspiring book that has the power to motivate.

An Honest Heart

GIVEAWAY

DACUS, KAYE
AN HONEST HEART

Set during the Industrial Revolution and the Great Exhibition of 1851, An Honest Heart is a “sitting-room romance” with the feel of a Regency-era novel but the fashions and technological advances of the mid-Victorian age.

Featuring dual romance stories, the main plot involves seamstress Caddy Bainbridge and the choice she must make between two men: one from the aristocracy, the other from the working class. Award-nominated author Kaye Dacus pinpoints the theme of honesty—both men in this love triangle have deep secrets to hide, and Caddy’s choice will be based on which of them can be honest with her.

Courtship . . . cunning . . . candor. Who possesses an honest heart?

My Review:

The second in Dacus's Great Exhibition series, An Honest Heart reads well as a standalone story but fans of the first book, Follow the Heart will quickly become reacquainted with some familiar characters...but take note -- this isn't a chronological series.

The author tries an entirely different angle by having the second book's timeline overlap the first so that some events and even scenes are related from a different character's point of view. It's a very unusual technique but I wish I had known about it from the get go. I got a bit confused because I felt like I wasn't remembering the first book at all. A quick consultation with Follow the Heart helped me get my bearings and realize that I was reading a parallel timeline so that things I remembered being resolved, weren't yet. Don't know if I'm explaining this right. It's totally not an issue if you haven't read the first book, and just something to keep in mind if you have so you don't drive yourself crazy like I did. :-)

The book culminates in a powerful scene that plays out at the end of the first book too, only this time we see it from an entirely different point of view. A really intriguing approach that I thoroughly enjoyed (once I figured it out.)

The author writes period pieces with incredible authenticity. I loved the details in everything from fashion to medical treatments to the whole divide between the classes. So beautifully written that it makes a great read aloud.

You'll meet some infuriating cads in this story -- the kind that will tempt you to hurl your book across the room. Thankfully they are balanced by a truly swoonworthy hero with a secret. I had this huge 'aha' moment when I finally figured out what that secret was and then couldn't wait for Caddy to figure it out too. Loved the thrill of that reveal.

A fascinating and captivating read that will make a great addition to your TBR pile.

Heartland Courtship

GIVEAWAY

COTE, LYN
HEARTLAND COURTSHIP

An Unexpected Partnership

Quaker Rachel Woolsey dreams of having her own bakery and her own homestead. But the odds are stacked against her—until the handsome ex-soldier she nurses back to health offers to help her. Like Rachel, Brennan Merriday is an outsider. But he'll be the temporary ally she needs, and her foolish attraction will fade once he's gone.

At first, the only thing Brennan wants to know about Pepin, Wisconsin, is how fast he can leave it. Perhaps in Canada he'll find peace after a bloody war. Yet repaying his debt to the pretty baker offers unexpected solace. She saved him once. Now he longs to rescue dreams of family—for both of them.

Wilderness Brides: Finding love—and a fresh start—on the frontier

My Review:

I absolutely loved the contrast between the Quaker heroine and the embittered Civil War vet. Rachel is such a great combination of faith and practicality. She's gifted at holding her tongue most of the time but when she does let loose her simple wisdom delivered in a matter-of-fact (and often unasked for) manner always seems to shake Brennan up. And he's so surly about it too! The real charm of this story is watching him gradually tamed by the gentle, steely-spined Quakeress.

A Talent for Trouble

GIVEAWAY

TURANO, JEN
A TALENT FOR TROUBLE

For years, Miss Felicia Murdock's every thought and action have been in pursuit of becoming a minister's wife. When the minister she'd set her sights on has other ideas, she decides something in her life needs to change--and soon--before she wastes any more time pretending to be someone she's not. If that means spreading her wings and embracing a more lively way of life, who's to say nay?

Grayson Sumner, Lord Sefton, has had more than enough of spreading his wings and only hopes to settle into the life of a respectable New York gentleman. Prompted by some friends to lift the spirits of the disappointed-in-love Miss Murdock, he is surprised to encounter an adventurous young lady with an unfortunate knack for stumbling into troublesome situations.

Just as Grayson decides he's had quite enough of her antics, his past comes back to haunt him and his presence in Felicia's life endangers her. As they work together to extricate themselves from this latest complication, will Grayson and Felicia decide they want to spend the rest of their lives keeping one another out of trouble?

My Review:

Madcap, outrageous and funny! Lots of laugh out loud moments. A Talent for Trouble is a rollicking read that kept me grinning right to the very end. Turano has her own unique formula for delivering romantic comedy and I love it!

There's a great juxtaposition between serious and ludicrous -- especially in heroine Felicia. And I just love how the outrageous bits about her character are what Grayson appreciates the most. The two of them bring every scene they are in crackling to life. They just seem to feed off each other -- Turano has created great dynamics between the two!

A secondary plot filled with danger and a few surprising twists balance out the comedy. A thrilling, light-hearted read that comes alive with love and laughter.

The Baby Rescue

GIVEAWAY

DALEY, MARGARET
THE BABY RESCUE

The too-pretty agent goes by the book, whereas Colton breaks rules to get the job done. Colton vows to keep his heart out of the job, but his unwanted attraction to Lisette lowers his guard. Now Lisette—and an innocent child—are in grave danger, and Colton will stop at nothing to save them.

Witness Protection: Hiding in plain sight

My Review:

This second book in the Witness Protection series is just as thrilling as the first. A complex action read that I could easily visualize as an episode on one of the popular law enforcement television series. Bonus with reading the book though -- you don't have to nail bite your way through any commercials!

Daley gradually tightens an already taut plot as the story progresses and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough towards the end! Lisette and Colton make a formidable pair -- both on the job and in their personal relationship. This is a memorable read that has whet my appetite for the next book in the series which is thankfully out next month!

Captive Maiden

GIVEAWAY

DICKERSON, MELANIE
CAPTIVE MAIDEN

Happily ever after...or happily nevermore?

Gisela's childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father's death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother. So when Gisela meets the duke's son, Valten -- the boy she has daydreamed about for years -- and learns he is throwing a ball, she vows to attend, even if it's only for a taste of a life she'll never have. To her surprise, she catches Valten's eye. Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds that Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

My Review:

I just can't get enough well-written fairy tale retellings and I'm thrilled that Melanie Dickerson has introduced this genre to the Christian market.  Familiar elements of the classic Cinderella story take on a new twist in this historical romance. I love how Dickerson blends traditional with 'new' and I enjoyed picking out common threads as I read along.

Gisela is an intriguing heroine...she is both vulnerable and defiant and desperate to break free from her stepmother's cruel deceptions. Enter one night in shining armour by the name of Valten. Dickerson fans will recognize him as the 'perfect' older brother of Gabe, hero in The Fairest Beauty. No worries though, Captive Maiden reads as a perfect standalone...this isn't a series in the true sense of the word.  In fact the title is perfect because this book is guaranteed to hold you captive until you reach the end!

Caitlyn Wentworth loves being a rodeo...

Until she starts receiving threatening letters from a stalker. The good news is, the Texas Ranger assigned to her case is none other than her former sweetheart Mitch Warren—the man who chose his career over love.

Mitch vows to focus on protecting the woman he's never forgotten. But Caitlyn stirs up memories best left in the past. When Mitch insists on hiding Caitlyn away on his family's San Antonio ranch, will he keep things professional or seek out a second chance?

My Review:

I love a heroine with 'tude and Vannatter knows how to write them! Caitlyn is strong-willed and stubborn and feisty and that's a volatile combination in a romance novel.  :-)  But she has a vulnerable side too, especially when it comes to her former sweetheart. Her stubbornness in that department near drove me insane before the end of the book! How she could resist Mitch for that long is beyond me! The romantic tension between the two is palpable and kept me turning pages while writhing in agony because, well, Mitch is just as stubborn as Caitlyn. A fantastic contemporary romance from a tried and true fave author.

The Dancing Master

GIVEAWAY

KLASSEN, JULIE
THE DANCING MASTER

Finding himself the man of the family, London dancing master Alec Valcourt moves his mother and sister to remote Devonshire, hoping to start over. But he is stunned to learn the village matriarch has prohibited all dancing, for reasons buried deep in her past.

Alec finds an unlikely ally in the matriarch's daughter. Though he's initially wary of Julia Midwinter's reckless flirtation, he comes to realize her bold exterior disguises a vulnerable soul--and hidden sorrows of her own.

Julia is quickly attracted to the handsome dancing master--a man her mother would never approve of--but she cannot imagine why Mr. Valcourt would leave London, or why he evades questions about his past. With Alec's help, can Julia uncover old secrets and restore life to her somber village...and to her mother's tattered heart?

Filled with mystery and romance, The Dancing Master brings to life the intriguing profession of those who taught essential social graces for ladies and gentlemen hoping to make a "good match" in Regency England.

My Review:

Honestly, I'm always tongue-tied when it comes to reviewing one of Julie Klassen's books because she's such an incredible writer and I just know I won't do her justice. The Dancing Master is another memorable read.

Rich in historical detail and chalk full of riveting intrigue and plot twists,  Klassen's latest novel is the kind of book you won't want to put down. I just poured over it -- recklessly skipping over words only to slow my pace so I could bask in the ambiance of Regency England. Blissful sigh!...and fret over a complicated love story that seems doomed to a bad end. :-)

Another stellar novel from a captivating author.

Cowboys of Sunrise Ranch:  These men have hearts as big as Texas.

My Review:

The perfect combination of humour and drama with a deep message about acceptance threaded throughout. Lucy's story really touched me. Rowdy became a larger than life hero for me despite his past. But when a secret from Sarah Jane's past threatens the young girl's life, joining forces with Tom is Katie's only option. They'll need all their courage to turn a perilous future into a home, a family—and a dream come true.

My Review:

A Wild West historical riddled with intrigue and some surprising plot twists, Lone Wolf's Lady is the kind of read you'll want to devour all at once. I love the tension the author has created between Tom and Katie. From past history to current desires, they are at complete odds. But even so, there is a spark of attraction from their very first meeting though it's often buried beneath an equally strong opposition. There's something endearing about a romance between two stubborn people. As a reader, I'm always anxious to discover who is going to capitulate first! No One To Trust

GIVEAWAY

EASON, LYNETTE
NO ONE TO TRUST

She doesn't know who she's running from...and the man she loves may be someone else entirely.

Summer Abernathy wakes up one morning to find her husband missing, three men in her home intent on finding him, and the life she's been living based on a lie. Which Kyle Abernathy did she marry? The computer programmer she met at the bank? Or the one who was apparently using that image as a cover?

The search for her husband -- and answers -- takes Summer ever deeper into a world of organized crime where people are used one moment and discarded the next. And with her deepest relationship of trust already shattered, Summer doesn't know who to believe.

Always thrilling, bestselling author Lynette Eason outdoes herself in this taut, breakneck story of lies, loyalties, and love that will have you up all night to discover the truth hidden in the shadows.

My Review:

Breathtaking. Complex. Sinister. Eason's latest release will rock your world. Well, it did mine. It's definitely a page turner -- the kind you voraciously read deep into the night until you can't bear to read anymore because your heart can't take it so you drift into a fitful sleep and wake up early to start reading again and  don't stop until you finish with a deep whoosh of relief and some satisfaction along with a residual compulsion to look over your shoulder the rest of the day. That's the kind of read No One To Trust is. :-)

I loved every second of it...even the times I had to read with my eyes closed! Loved the completely fresh angle to the romance. Brilliant. And the hero whose singularly selfish act created an explosion of relentless danger and confusion. Really -- how can an author redeem such a character? Well, she doesn't so much as God does. There's a wonderful inspirational message about the power of love and forgiveness within these pages as well. A stunning suspense novel that will affect its readers on multiple levels.

Race for the Gold

GIVEAWAY

MENTINK, DANA
RACE FOR THE GOLD

Speed skater Laney Thompson still has nightmares about the car crash that almost shattered her lifelong dream. But as she's poised to compete in the world's most important games, she finds worse trouble. Someone wants her out of contention…badly. Laney won't let anything stop her—not sabotage, a stalker or partial amnesia. As she and her brooding trainer Max Blanco strive to overcome past tragedy, the ice between them starts to melt. But as the race draws closer, a killer becomes more desperate, and a race for the gold becomes a race for their lives!

My Review:

A topical read with the Winter Olympics just around the corner. I loved the unique twist to this Love Inspired Suspense. Mentink takes us into the intense and competitive world of pre-Olympic sports training. What a fascinating venue for a suspense novel! This is a real page-turner as strange and sinister things start happening to Laney as she's training for the pre-game trials. There are plenty of suspects that set my amateur sleuth spidey senses into overdrive. And who can resist a brooding hero who is wrestling with his own nightmarish past? Race for the Gold has all the elements of a stellar edge-of-you-seat read.

Becky Byler is eighteen and overweight. She is overwhelmed by the embarrassment she feels when comparing herself to other girls her age. Having lost all hope, she considers taking her own life. As she stands before rushing water, unable to swim, Becky begs God for a miracle. In just several months, Becky sees her prayers answered as food and temptation lose their hold over her. She’s finally pleased with how she looks, but does she like the person she has become? And has the man she has dreamed of been right beside her all along, loving her exactly as she is?

Always His Providence by Ruth Reid

Widow Rosa Hostetler has one month to pay her delinquent taxes before the county auctions her farm. She’s prepared to sell whatever is necessary to pay the lien, but she isn’t willing to request money from the community’s widow fund. She’s embarrassed and refuses to admit she needs help. Rosa depends on income from selling eggs, but when that income is threatened, only a miracle can help Rosa accept the kindness of a neighbor.

Always in My Heart by Mary Ellis

Hope Bowman believes God is punishing her for giving up her firstborn son when she was a teenager. She’s hidden this secret from her husband, who is thankful for their daughters but longs for a son. Hope prays desperately, but the son God sends her isn’t a new baby but the fifteen-year-old boy she gave up years ago.

My Review:

Three novellas that share characters and community and seamlessly blend with each other. Brilliantly done. Each story is an incredible read. Though compact, the authors deliver with depth and emotion and page-turning plots. If you love Amish fiction you will adore An Amish Miracle.
