An Unexpected Match

GIVEAWAY

ROPER, GAYLE
AN UNEXPECTED MATCH

Rachel Beiler loves her job as the teacher in her Amish community. She’s obedient, humble, and compliant and tries to keep the ordnung to the best of her ability. But Rachel has a secret—something that could get her shunned if she’s found out. She loves knowledge and yearns for a college education.

After serving a dozen years in the Army, Rob Lanier has returned from Afghanistan. But now that he’s home again, he’s constantly reminded of his family’s fall from grace. His father—once a highly respected and wealthy community leader—has disgraced the family, and Rob can’t find it in his heart to forgive him.

When Rachel and Rob meet, sparks fly. But when a series of frightening events surrounding Rachel’s brother Johnny brings Rachel’s world crashing down around her, this unlikely match between an Amish teacher and an Englischer ex-soldier seems to be God’s perfect answer.

My Review:

People often ask me how I manage to read so much. First off, I live alone so it's easy for me to snatch reading time throughout my day. Secondly I have a chronic pain condition that limits my activities quite a bit. That equals more reading time. And last, but by no means least, from time to time I have a particularly bad night when sleep is impossible. The only thing that gets me through those (thankfully few and far between) episodes is the distraction of a good book. I had one of those restless nights this week and was beyond thankful to latch onto Rachel's story. It consumed me and by the time I was finished I was so emotionally spent I was actually able to drift off to sleep for a few hours. LOL. Bibliotherapy at its finest.

This is the riveting tale of a woman torn between two worlds as she attempts to follow God's path for her life. Pleasing both sides is impossible but I so wanted it to work out. Why couldn't she have it all? How could she possibly choose? And live with the ramifications of whatever choice she finally makes?

Rob's return home to the community he grew up in is a surprise even to him. As is his attempts to connect with his estranged father. Add in a dysfunctional mother and brother and his home life makes his years in service seem easy. And in the midst of this chaotic homecoming he meets the perfect woman of his dreams...only she isn't. Talk about an angst-riddled romance!

Wonderful secondary characters and a surprising action-filled plot-twist bring an extra depth to an already compelling story. I pulled an all nighter to get An Unexpected Match read and so appreciate the distraction and spiritual healing this story brought me. Bless you, Gayle Roper!

    1. Isn't it funny how some books kind of slither into the market without a whole lot of fanfare? I'm on a quest to find more of them! Glad you'll be reading this one too.

    1. Waiting for medical appointments is another great way to find reading time, isn't, Maryann? Hope all is well after the emerg visit. And you really need to check Gayle Roper out. She's written quite a few Amish novels. I've read some, but need to catch up on more. Good luck.

    1. Amen to the books. I couldn't have gotten through the last five years without them!!!!!! I know -- see -- you read a lot and 'get around cyberspace' and you hadn't heard of it either. That makes me feel a bit better. You need to read it though. Awesome story. Good luck.

You mentioned chronic pain . . . My husband suffers from fibromyalgia and I wondered if you had a similar problem. Chronic pain is even more difficult because you look healthy, so people tend to not understand how you feel.
