The Chapel Car Bride

GIVEAWAY

MILLER, JUDITH
THE CHAPEL CAR BRIDE

After a sheltered life in Pittsburgh, Hope Irvine is ready for a new adventure. When her father takes a position as a preacher in a railroad car converted into a traveling church, she's thrilled at the chance to accompany him. while accommodation in their new chapel car home are tight, Hope couldn't be happier putting her musical skills to good use and ministering to the people of West Virginia alongside her father. But when their chapel car arrives in Finch, West Virginia, they find a coal mining community that has his hard times and is suspicious of outsiders.

Luke Hughes works for the coal mine when he can, but the struggling company doesn't always offer steady work. When Reverend Irvine and Hope arrive in town, Luke is intrigued by what the reverend can teach him -- and by the lovely and kind Hope.

When Hope's desire to bring supplies and Sunday school classes to neighboring counties leads to her traveling with a flirtatious young mine manager. Luke is hard-pressed to suppress his jealousy. But when he begins to suspect the manager's motives are less than charitable, can he prove it without hurting Hope, or worse, putting her in danger?

My Review:

I love discovering unknown-to-me bits of history in the pages of a novel. I mean, seriously, a chapel car ministry? How cool is that? Imagine a train car set up as a chapel with a small section at the back blocked off for living quarters. It's the original tiny house! And the chapel car can be disconnected and left behind to minister to the people in small communities along the railroad line. How did I not hear about this before? Such an awesome backdrop for a historical romance.

And then there's the discontent and wariness of close-knit coal mining towns in West Virginia. Poor wages, dangerous work, unfair treatment by mine managers. It all adds a sense of danger and even some intrigue to the plot.

Hope is eager to prove herself as she accompanies her father on his ministry tour for the first time. She"s not prepared for the abject poverty she encounters, the rough-and-tumble existence in the remote mining towns. But the girl has grit and determination and a love for the Lord that fuels her desire to serve through her music and children's ministry.

Luke is the family breadwinner, providing for his mother and siblings on his limited mining income. He"s as intrigued by the chapel car as I am. :-) A man of faith, it isn"t long before he becomes enmeshed in the Irvine's lives and ministry...with a certain fascination for the preacher's daughter.

A sweet inspirational romance rich in historical details and filled with captivating characters. A joy of a read.

The snow has finally melted and the warmer weather conjures up images of lazy afternoons spent lounging by the pool or on the beach or patio with book in hand, soaking up sun and stories...only...gasp...my TBR pile is dwindling and my summer reading list of new releases has a lot of holes...like way more empty lines than filled ones. Doon

GIVEAWAY

CORP, CAREY
LANGDON, LORIE
DOON

Veronica doesn't think she's going crazy. But why can't anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes?

When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months. But the Scottish countryside holds other plans. Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna\s great aunt -- and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation.

Doon seems like a read-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica's daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they've longed for...or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

My Review:

Deliciously romantical! Seriously swooning over this one. If you love the musical, Brigadoon, you'll be be over the moon with this exploration of the magical realm. Danger and action and handsome highlanders all nobly protective and weak-in-the-knees charm. Jamie and Duncan are an interesting mesh of  old-fashioned modern. And they've met their match with these 21st century girls. Feisty and stubborn and inexplicably drawn to the princes. But there's evil afoot and it begins to look like there is no such thing as happily ever after. That doesn't mean there aren't any number of toe-curling scenes, though. I had heart palpitations the whole read through.

A brilliant modern-day fairy tale with a bit of a cliffie that has me hightailing it to my library for book two...and three. Look for them in future Retro Saturday giveaways.

Calculated Vendetta

GIVEAWAY

BAILEY, JODIE
CALCULATED VENDETTA

Killer story

When army journalist Casey Jordan's attacked she's convinced it's a random mugging -- until a killer comes after the military learns she's interviewing. But who's the real target: Casey or her ex -- staff sergeant Travis Heath? Despite an attraction that still lingers, Travis pushed Casey away months ago, convinced military life leaves no room for attachments. But when the attacks grow increasingly personal, Travis begins to question his chosen path. As the targets of a killer's vendetta, though, it could be too late to make up for lost time...because he and Casey may not have a future to share.

My Review:

A lovely mix of weak-in-the-knees romantical and hope-stirring faith. Perfect to balance all the danger in this fast-paced and action-packed suspense, Casey and Travis find themselves in the middle of a puzzling mystery...and the targets of a very determined killer.. Intricately woven clues will keep armchair sleuths on the edge of their seat as they follow all the twists and turns of a baffling investigation. Loved the second chance romance angle -- Casey all prickly pride and wary reserve while Travis is stubbornly intent on keeping her at arms length. A whirlwind of a read that will leave you breathless!

Life After

GIVEAWAY

GANSHERT, KATIE
LIFE AFTER

It could have been me.

Snow whirls around an elevated train platform in Chicago. A distracted woman boards the train, takes her seat, and moments later a fiery explosion rips through the frigid air, tearing the car apart in a horrific attack on the city's transit system. One life is spared. Twenty-two are lost.

A year later, surviving Autumn Manning can't remember the day of the bombing and she is tormented by grief -- by guilt. Twelve months of the question constantly echoing: Why? Why? Why? Searching for answers, she haunts the lives of the victims, unable to rest.

Paul Elliott lost his wife in the train bombing and wants to let the dead remain buried, undisturbed, and unable to cause more pain for his loved ones. He wants normalcy for his twelve-year-old daughter and young son, to see them move beyond the heartbreak. But when the Elliotts and Autumn are unexpectedly forced together, he fears she'll bring more wreckage in her wake.

In Life After, Katie Ganshert's most complex and unforgettable novel yet, the stirring prose and authentic characters pose questions of truth, goodness, and ultimate purpose in an unpredictable world.

My Review:

I've been wrestling with how to review this book all week. It defies description. Stunning. Moving. Enthralling. Insert every glowing adjective you can think of and Life After is all of them -- and so much more.

This novel had a profound impact on me. The author led me to view a certain scripture in a new light. Simple but powerful words convicted me to a new depth of understanding. And shortly after finishing this book I was able to share that new conviction with a friend who was really struggling. It affected -- and blessed -- her the same way it had me!

So now you want to know what that scripture is, right? Well, I'm not going to tell you, because it is so wrapped up in the story that I don't want to spoil it for you. This is a novel that you really need to discover for yourself -- one delectable page at a time. It's the kind of book you should dive into without knowing what to expect just so you can experience the wonder of it.

It's heartbreaking and hopeful and ultimately triumphant. If you only take one book recommendation from me this year, make it this one!

Echo of Danger

GIVEAWAY

PERRY, MARTA
ECHO OF DANGER

In peaceful Pennsylvania Dutch country, a young mother discovers a shocking danger -- and an unexpected ally...

A whisper of a threat looms over widow Deidre Morris. She and her young son have unwittingly become prisoners of her intimidating father-in-law's power. One wrong step could find her son torn from her and in the hands of the influential judge. When Deidre collides with an intriguing stranger, the prospect of a new friendship gives her renewed hope...until a devastating murder rocks the quiet community of Echo Falls and Deidre learns first impressions can't be trusted.

Attorney Jase Glassman's assignment is straightforward: befriend Deidre, gather incriminating evidence...and allow her dogged father-in-law to take custody of her child. Anything else, including losing himself in her honest charm, will compromise the job he was hired to do. Yet when a murderer ushers danger into the town, Jase's only instinct is to protect Deidre and her son -- no matter the sacrifice.

My Review:

Secrets don't stay buried forever. Isn't that an awesomely sinister tagline for a romantic suspense? Sends a chilling thrill up my spine and makes me eager to delve into the story. And, oh my goodness, what a story!  Echo of Danger is the perfect mix of mystery, menace and romance.

Perry is brilliant at putting together a suspenseful plot. Lots of subtle twists and alarming turns.and me jumping up and down when I think I figured something out! I like to make my armchair sleuthing interactive! :-)

And then there's the romance which has it's own gnarly twists. I connected with Deidre right off. but it took me longer to warm up to Jase.. That's because I found the agreement he's made with Deidre's overbearing father-in-law unsettling. So underhanded and scheming. But Perry slowly reveals pieces of Jase's past that helped me understand how he came to make that kind of bargain with the Judge. And once he meets Deidre he's already doubting himself. That kind of internal conflict makes for a very fascinating hero. And then the danger amps up and Jase goes into major protective mode and I was a goner.

The kind of book you'll want to read cover to cover in one sitting.

Please note: Echo of Danger is not categorized as Christian Fiction (it's published for the general market by HQN) but it is a clean read. Having said that there are some Amish characters who share some plain and simple gospel truths with Deirdre and she does attend church and have contact with a minister.

Giveaway Opportunity:

If you would like an opportunity to win a copy of Echo of Danger please leave a comment below or email me at kavluvstoreadATyahooDOTca. • Paperback edition and stuyd guide to be released spring 2018
My Review:

I am totally intrigued by this book. Bruxy Cavey makes a case for following Jesus in what some might think is a radical way. He really has me thinking and assessing how I have been walking this faith journey. I love being challenged and this book definitely does that.

Am I a religious person? Or person of faith? Have to admit I've spent most of my life thinking they were one in the same but after reading (Re)union I'm beginning to see they are not.

Cavey has an easy-going writing style -- even humorous at times -- and reading this book felt like he was right there with me and we were having a one-on-one discussion. I even answered out loud a time or two! We're talking relationships -- with God, with each other, with the greater community and how Jesus is the key to making sense of it all. A tranaforming message that encourages readers to actively participate in their faith by simply following Jesus.

Pursued

GIVEAWAY

HARRIS, LISA
PURSUED

Nikki Boyd's flight into Nashville was routine -- up until the crash landing at the airport. When the dust settles, Nikki discovers that the woman who had been seated next to her on the plane is missing -- and no one will admit she was ever there. Erika Hamilton had been flying to Nashville with an air marshal as a key witness in an upcoming grand jury trial. When she flees from the crash, is she running from trouble or straight into it? Before Nikki can even see her family, she and her team are pulled into a missing person's case where the motives are as unclear as the suspects.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lisa Harris has planted danger around every turn in this can't-put-it-down thrill ride that will leave readers stunned.

My Review:

You'll need a full line-up of oxygen tanks before you get started on this third book in The Nikki Boyd Files. And while part of a series, Pursued can be read as a standalone. Each book has a unique suspense thread though there is a continuous love story developing as well as an over-arcing suspense thread (Nikki's search for her missing sister) that flows through all the books.

Pursued starts off with, well, a plane crash! The plane that Nikki just happens to be traveling on! And the action and danger doesn't let up from that first chapter. Because Nikki being Nikki can't help but notice there is something 'off' about her seat mate and when she can't find her after the crash all her finely honed detective skills go into spidey overdrive. Her team pairs up with the FBI and the chase is on to find a key witness before the bad guys (of which there are plenty) do.

I've said this in my reviews of the first two books -- this series reminds me of the 90s series, Without A Trace. It has the same kind of  frantic pace as the team works time-sensitive missing persons cases. Intensity is relieved by wise-cracking quips and teasing banter. And readers walk through all the police procedure of an ongoing investigation right along with the characters. Compelling stuff that makes this one compulsive read.

Carolina Dream

GIVEAWAY

MERRICK, REGINA RUDD
CAROLINA DREAM

Sarah Crawford wants more from life than to attend the wedding of her ex-fiance. An unexpected inheritance in South Carolina comes at the perfect time, just as Sarah is willing to use any excuse to get out of town.

When she meets potential business partner Jared Benton and discovers that a house is part of the inheritance, she is sure that God has been preparing her for this time through a recurring dream. But will a dream about an antebellum mansion, many rooms to be explored, and a man with dark brown eyes give her the confidence to take a leap of faith, leaving friends, family, and her job behind?

My Review:

A sweet, classic love story that's pure vintage Christian romance. Puts me in mind of a contemporary Janette Oke. And it's the romance that takes centre stage. Sarah and Jared's love story gently unfolds against the rich backdrop of an antebellum mansion in South Carolina. Loved the setting and the lure of an unexpected inheritance that brings Sarah to Litchfield Beach.,,and into Jared's arms!

He's all Southern charm and brown-eyed winks. What girl's pulse wouldn't stutter in his presence? By rights, Jared should be resentful of Sarah. She's usurped part of the business he holds so dear. But Jared is a godly man -- in fact all the characters are Christian in this novel -- and his penchant for seeking out the Lord in every aspect of his life goes a long way towards softening any resentment he might have otherwise nursed.

Sarah is just as devout and uses the time away from home to diligently seek the Lord's leading in her life. New opportunities await -- both professionally and personally. I love how both hero and heroine are secure in their faith, determined to seek divine guidance on each step of the journey that brings them together.

A sweet, contemporary romance from a debut author! And the first in the Southern Breeze series and I'm looking forward to more. Hoping it's Lucy's story next. (hint to the author.)

My thanks to the author for providing me with a opy of this book.
