In the Field of Grace

GIVEAWAY

AFSHAR, TESSA
IN THE FIELD OF GRACE

Without wealth or family, the widow Ruth left her people and followed Naomi, her beloved Hebrew mother-in-law, to rebuilt Naomi's home in Israel. Provisions gone and starvation at the door, Ruth used all that she had left -- a strong back and a willing heart -- to gather grain in a field abandoned after the harvest.

Tormented by others, Ruth is shocked to find the owner of the field watching her. Talking to her. Bringing food to her and Naomi. Boaz tells himself his kindness toward Ruth is repayment for the love she has shown to his cousin Naomi. But his heart knows better.

My Review:

Published in 2014

I can honestly say that I appreciate Ruth's story with renewed wonder after reading In the Field of Grace. Tessa Afshar has an incredible gift of bringing the bible to life through her exquisite  biblical retellings.

A familiar and much loved bible story becomes so much more thanks to the rich historical detail and intrinsic gospel truths that I eagerly took to heart -- like this beauty: "If God spared us from the piercing shaft of every sorrow," she said, "we could never fulfill His best plans for our lives. Sometimes the sweetest things in life rise up out of the worst things in life." (p38) Profound truths that remain just as relevant today as they were in Old Testament times.

Simply stunning!

  1. If you like Ruth and Naomi's story told in Biblical fiction, you should check out Jill Eileen Smith "Redeeming Grace"! Or any of her books really :-) She also has a talented way to bring the Bible to life through her characters and unique writers voice.

My favorite story myself and I'm anxious to read Tessa account. That line you shared told me this is one not to miss...wow!

  4. Ruth and Esther seem to be a couple of the most popular Biblical stories to re-imagine in Biblical Fiction. I am not a big reader of Biblical fiction, but I have been wanting to read a book by Tessa Afshar for quite awhile. Kav, You've been reading more Bibilical fiction lately and I'm inspired. :) ------ tlhcoupon(at)hotmail(dot)com

  6. In The Field of Grace is the BEST fictionalized story of Ruth and Naomi ever!

I agree with you, her writing is simply stunning!

And in three days her Bread of Angels releases, Lydia's story! I'll be on vacation with my family, but while I'm sitting on the beach, I'll be turning back the clock about two thousand years to read her story!

    Happy Reading Weekend everyone!

    1. Thanks for the tip about the new release! And I believe it was you who told me to try In the Field of Grace so thanks for that suggestion. My library has a lot of Tessa Afshar's books so I'll be slowly catching up on my fictional bible study. Enjoy your vacation. Nothing like reading on the beach! Or reading anywhere for that matter. :-)
