Many Sparrows

GIVEAWAY
BENTON, LORI
MANY SPARROWS

Either she and her children would emerge from that wilderness together, or none of them would...

In 1774, the Ohio-Kentucky frontier pulses with rising tension and brutal conflict as colonies push westward and encroach upon Native American territories. The young Inglesby family is making the perilous journey west when an accident sends Philip back to Redstone Fort for help, forcing him to leave his pregnant wife, Clare, and their four-year-old son, Jacob, on a remote mountain trail.

When Philip does not return and Jacob disappears from the wagon under the cover of darkness, Claire finds herself utterly alone in labor, and wondering how she can recover her son -- especially when her second child is moments away from being born.

Clare will face the greatest fight of her life as she struggles to reclaim her son from the Shawnee Indians now holding him captive. But with the battle lines sharply drawn, Jacob's life might not be the only one at stake. When frontiersman Jeremiah Ring comes to her aid, can the stranger convince Clare that recovering her son will require the very thing her anguished heart is unwilling to do -- be still, wait, and let God fight this battle for them?

My Review:

"Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage." (p 65)

I love Lori Benton's books but I have to say that Many Sparrows is by far my favourite to date. And that's saying something considering how much I adore her writing. But this story just struck a cord with me. I connected with Clare right from the start. Am in awe of her courage and determination in the face of insurmountable odds. And Jeremiah, a man of solid faith, determined to do what is right. Their breathtaking story is spellbinding. So many twists and turns and the agony of waiting on the Lord plays out in gut-wrenching ways.

Benton has a heart for this time period and the Native American people. She paints pictures with her words; creates entire scenes with a simple sentence. Rich, vivid, details make me feel like I can smell the smoke of the campfires, picture exactly what the inside of a wegiwa looks like. I'm in awe of the historical details and the care with which the author does her research. It creates a living piece of history that has the power to stir emotions. And I couldn't help but see some unfortunate parallels in past and present. A moving and uplifting historical romance that has also proven to be thought-provoking.

I love when an author paints an entire picture with just a few words, don't you?

  4. I'm not sure my mother's heart can endure a lost 4 yr old! I've heard so many rave reviews for Benton's work, but she does seem to go for the difficult subject matter which has me thinking twice. Go ahead you can say it, I'm a wimp when it comes to kids and trauma! However, I do want to try something of hers and since you say this is her best please include me in the drawing.

  18. MANY SPARROWS sounds awesome – one of the best of the best type book.

Trying to imagine the horrors Clara must have gone through – husband that’s not returned, missing son, giving birth in the wilderness all alone – are almost unfathomable. However, in your review, how you told about how eloquently written it was and how vivid the detailing is, I know that it has to be a beautiful story to read.

Opening your review with the phrase "Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage." had me from the get go.

Thank you for the chance to win a copy of this book which I would love to read.
