My Review:

I have borrowed this cookbook so many times from the library that I finally bought my own copy. And while I love the simple but oh-so-delicious recipes that are family and church potluck friendly, I also love the beautiful layout and all the extras that make this the kind of book I just want to pore over.

Gorgeous illustrations -- and not just of food but of the Amish life style provide a fetching backdrop to oodles of recipes. Like this:

And then there's the Amish proverbs that never cease to put a smile on my face. Like this:

And this:

And there are tons of handy cooking tips, the kind your grandma might have shared with you but you never paid attention and now you're wishing your remembered -- things like: "A way to make lettuce or celery crisp again is to place it in a pot of cold water with slices of raw potato." Who knew????? Plus there are inserts that share some of the Amish culture. Not to mention nearly 200 pages of recipes...including Whoopie pies and Haystacks...which I've read about in countless Amish stories. This is definitely a cookbook I'll be referring to again and again.

It would be interesting to read through and see some of the recipes from other areas, especially Canada. That handy tip, I have never heard of getting lettuce crispy again!

    1. Bwahahaha! Book temptress -- I like that. This is a coffee table kind of cookbook. It's so inviting. I keep picking it up and discovering something new. And the recipes are so...plain good. Not fancy smancy or requiring strange and expensive ingredients. And it's fun to see a recipe that I've read about in an Amish story. I feel an Amish reading binge coming on. lol Good luck, Tracey.

  7. One of my passions is to bake. Nothing brings greater satisfaction than to see others eating something I created and see a smile on their face. The Amish cooking has always intrigued me in taste, ease they have in doing it and volume of food that they cook. Thank you for the review and the chance to win this amazing Amish Cookbook which is more than a cook book!
