Rodeo Standoff

GIVEAWAY
SLEEMAN, SUSAN
RODEO STANDOFF

The rodeo arena is always treacherous...now it's deadly...

It's no accident Deputy Tessa McKade is trapped with an angry bull ready to trample her to death. She quickly realizes that McKade Law is no longer enough to keep her safe -- and it's her rescuer, Braden Hayes, who stands in as her bodyguard. As they seek to stop a would-be killer, Braden will have to use all his professional skills to guard Tessa's life.

My Review:

"Tessa kept her eyes trained on the deadly threat." And with that hair-raising opening sentence we're off the races...er rodeo. And what a cool backdrop for a romantic suspense. I've never been to a rodeo but I sure feel like I have now. And it provides some intriguing opportunities for someone with murderous intent. Which is exciting to read about but not to live through, as Tessa can attest to. She may have grit and spunk and McKade blood running through her veins but having a target on her back has her spooked.

Braden just happens to be in the right place at the right time to come to the rescue and then he feels duty bound to see Tessa clear of this threat. Never mind that she comes from a whole family of law enforcement. There's something about Tessa and her crazy big family that draws him in. But Braden's an intentional loner, determined to not play out his parent's dysfunction in a family of his own. He doesn't do commitment but there are moments when Tessa makes him forget why.

Love the way the romance builds in this story. It never seems rushed though it does develop at a whirlwind pace. Sleeman has found a way to balance edgy suspense with enough down time to allow a relationship to build. And she gives us ample scenes with the whole McKade clan which is a real treat. This family is larger than life and every one of them, from Grandpa through to all the siblings are opinionated, bull-headed and protective. What a crew! Lots of opportunity for laughter when they gather together in a scene.

But there's plenty of edge-of-your-seat action and suspense in this story as well. And the mystery is truly puzzling. It all makes for a compelling read -- the kind you can't put down until you reach the end with a hearty sigh of reader satisfaction!

Thank you for your review and for the chance to win a copy!

I fondly remember going to the rodeo when we lived in CA and it lasting all day with several events going on at the same time in the huge arena area. They were nothing like the ones back south here which are usually at night and only last a couple hours. We always said that was the difference in punctuation between the southern ro-de-o and the California roe-da-o even though it's all one one - one spelling. :)
