My Review:

A brilliant job was done by each author to make their individual work flow seamlessly into the others. Each story was skillfully interwoven so that it was hard to tell where one left off and another began. Each novella makes a satisfying read on its own, but together they make the perfect escape read. Funny, dramatic, romantic -- triple threats for a triple-authored book. A definite winner for Amish fiction lovers.

My Review:

I battled a raging snowstorm to get to the Christian bookstore before work on Saturday and was greeted by this beautiful cover the second I walked into the store. What a breath of spring! I had to buy it -- especially since it's written by Cindy Woodsmall. Need I say more? And bonus! It's a sequel to her Christmas novella, The Christmas Singing and we even get to catch up with Mattie and Gideon! Hoping that Woodsmall continues with the series because she has two seasons left to cover!

Even though this is a novella, Woodsmall has managed to pack it full of angst, romance and beautiful prose. She is such a gifted wordsmith! This is a Romeo/Juliet kind of love story with an Amish/Mennonite twist and I absolutely loved it. All the way through I kept fretting over how she could possibly turn this into a happily ever after. And I loved the fascinating details that explain the differences between the Amish and Old Order Mennonite faiths.

As usual, the author has created characters who have won my heart -- including Aden's twin brother, Roman, who has his own story to tell. Hopefully that will be covered in the next novella. This beautiful little hard-cover book is definitely destined for my keeper shelf. How about yours?

My Review:

Steeped in history and packed with action, this historical novel was an eye-opener. The authors managed to capture the emotion and atmosphere at the end of the war with gritty realism. French politics and the various factions in the resistance provide a tumultuous backdrop for a cloak and dagger story filled with intrigue.

Told from multiple points of view, Chasing Mona Lisa doesn't seem to have a clear hero or heroine. There are so many characters that none of them take precedence over the others. Definitely not Eric and Gabi, though the back cover blurb leads the reader to believe that this is their story. They definitely have a role to play, but so do many others and this left me feeling on the outside looking in. I felt like I was spectator not a participant in the story and that result failed to engage my emotions.

Something that surprised me was the lack of an inspirational thread. The few token comments made by characters about their belief in God seemed to have been slipped in so that the book would fit the CBA market.

My Review:

Riveting drama told in first person. This book is layer-deep in plot and character development. Complicated and moving with an unexpected thread of suspense that had me skimming ahead in my urgent need to find out what happened.

Rich in life lessons, I found myself as moved by wonderful pieces of wisdom as Heather was. In fact, I struggled even as she struggled through her emotionally skewed past. I marked passages that had a profound effect on me so that I can find them again and take some time to absorb them. This book left me thinking -- stretching both emotionally and spiritually. There's a wonderful Mennonite thread in its pages as well and I definitely profited from Ruth's plain truths.

In short, this book has it all -- emotional depth, inspirational hope, page-turning drama and a budding romance. What more can you ask of a book?

My Review:

Is gut-wrenching splendour an oxymoron? Because that's how I'd begin to describe Promise Me This. I wouldn't end there though. I might throw in descriptors like 'agonizingly wonderful' or 'despairingly stunning' or ... LOL - clearly this book has sent me into a tailspin but I'll try to regroup.

It is definitely worthy of the title 'epic saga' as the story takes place over several years, crosses continents and is fraught with angst. Michael and Annie are just teens when we meet them first but some cleverly crafted plotting takes us all on a journey we soon won't forget. Gohlke tackles an intriguing period of history that includes the sinking of the Titanic and World War I and has done such a good job of it that I'm still feeling emotionally bruised.

You will find characters to instantly bond with and a plot rife with harrowing and unpredictable twists and turns that will keep you on your toes to the very last sentence. Seriously, I despaired so deeply at one point that I had to take a peek at the last page and I hardly every do that!

And oh, Gohlke's characters -- from the hero and heroine right through to the secondary characters -- all so real, so vibrant and oh so compelling. Artfully crafted, each plays a pivotal role in the story and you'll meet one of the vilest villains in literary history! There's so much more I want to say but won't for fear of unintentionally leaking spoilers. This is definitely a novel worthy of a book club discussion -- one that would go on long into the night because there is so much substance to the story.

Promise Me This is the kind of book that will profoundly effect its readers. On a scale of one to 10, I'd rate it 100.

My Review:

Tippens knows how to pull at the heartstrings of her readers! I was engaged from the very first page...and enraged! I love it when authors play around with my emotions and Tippens definitely did that when she chose this difficult subject matter. There is so much conflict and so many injustices that my stomach gets into knots just thinking about it. And that's the key to a really good story -- one that leaves you thinking about it days after you've read it.

There's an important inspirational messages in A House Full of Hope. Tippens manages to make a significant statement without coming across as preachy. She really sent me into a deep reflection on what the words redeem and forgive mean and how I can apply them in my life and, more importantly, in the lives of others. This would be a great choice for a church book club -- there is so much fodder for discussion!

And bonus -- that message comes wrapped up in an inspiring romantic story with engaging (and infuriating) characters you won't soon forget. This is definitely Tippens at her best -- and you can't get any better than that!

My Review:

This is the kind of book you are tempted to speed-read through, but resist that urge and savor every minute of it! Kaye has done an incredibly tantalizing job of creating an engaging plot and intriguing character development. There's a great slow reveal of the hero's back story that's accompanied by more than a couple of jaw-dropping moments. I love being surprised and I was gobsmacked at one part!

This is a well-paced romance. Rob and Olivia definitely hit some pitfalls in their developing relationship but those stumbling blocks are realistic and build to credible and extremely satisfying conclusion.

Rob's battle with his past makes him hardest on himself. He's worried about being knocked off the pedestal Olivia put him on back in their college days but, in reality it's Rob who has smashed that pedestal to smithereens. He continues to allow those shards to cut into his life, dragging him back into the past again and again. Caution is his middle name while Olivia's is impulsive. But she also has the depth and maturity of a woman anchored in Christ in spite of the fun-loving, carefree persona she has created. This lush contrast between hero and heroine make this read all the richer.

High Country Hearts definitely belongs on every romance lovers TBR list! So, rush to the store right now or...

My Review:

As exquisite as the cover, Sixty Acres and a Bride makes a solid case for judging a book by its cover. Sublime! I enjoyed every minute and didn't want my reading experience to end. This is the kind of book you grieve over at the finish. (I'm still in mourning.)

The author definitely engaged this reader with dynamic characters that quickly became real people who charged into my life and practically took it over. I laughed with them, I cried with them and I worried over them whenever I managed to drag myself back into the real world.

Jennings did an amazing job with her heroine's storyline. Rosa is a displaced person in so many ways, having suffered enormous losses in her young life. Desperate for a place and people to belong to, she strives to adapt to a foreign culture filled with unfamiliar ways. I think every reader will be able to identify with that yearning and that is what makes Rosa's journey so poignant. She's a winning combination of grit and vulnerability. Of course that lambasts poor Weston who can't define Rosa's place let alone keep her in it!One of the brilliant strengths of this book is their incredible love story.

It's not an easy journey and definitely fraught with all manner of obstacles but Jennings has mastered the craft of romance. She kept me riveted with tantalizing scenes that were deeply intimate even though Rosa and Weston didn't even touch. But when they did...oh la la!!!!! Haul in the fainting couch one more time, ladies, you might as well recline there while you read. No point in getting up and risking a head injury when you fall back down again!

This book also has one of the best seamless inspirational threads. It develops naturally from within different characters in so many scenes and always seems plausible. It enhances the story and uplifts the reader which is exactly as it should be in an inspirational romance.

Sixty Acres and a Bride is definitely destined for keeper shelves across the country. Don't pass this one by and when you're at the store buy two -- one for you and one for a friend!

My Review:

This is an oh-my-goodness-but-you-have-to-read-this-NOW kind of book. Seriously incredibly good. Riveting, in fact. The kind that you won't want to put down.

Rich in historical detail and fascinating facts, it propelled me back into an unfamiliar part of history and left me raging with fury and frustration more than a few times. Talk about engaging your readers! My blood is still boiling!

Adriane Darcy is a heroine to be reckoned with; a character full of complexities. She is conflicted between duty and desire and her struggle to be true to herself while not betraying those she loves brings such depth to the story. And who better to set her on her heels than that brash newspaper man, Blake Garrett? Gabhart upped the angstometer when she put those two together in their first scene. I won't say more other than a fainting couch is a definite reader necessity as their romance progresses. And you might want to have a supply of smelling salts on hand as well -- just to get you through to the end. :-)

My Review:

Delightful romance with more than a touch of angst! I love that combination -- when you can see so clearly why the hero and heroine are perfect for each other, but you can also see even more clearly why they are not! Hunter does a great job of engaging her readers' emotions in this seemingly ill-fated love story. From the impossible accidental wedding to the equally impossible gnarly past that needs to be overcome, the plot gets thicker before things smooth out and that kept me voraciously turning pages.

Travis has a lot to live down and Shay has a lot toforgive, and, more importantly, forget. What a conundrum! And at times I didn't know who I should be rooting for so I just sat back and enjoyed the read right through to the tremendously satisfying end.

My Review:

"Six full feet of stubborn and another few inches of dumb." (p.34) is an apt description of Ethan Kincaid, Connealy's latest reluctant hero. The descriptor also gives you a sense of the author's unique style and her wry sense of humour. Laughter ricochets off every page like bullets in a cavern. There's a staccato rhythm in both her comedy and drama that sets a fast pace to this intriguing plot.

Fans of Out of Control will be thrilled to become reacquainted with familiar characters. And while Rafe and Julia and Seth definitely play their parts well -- this is Ethan and Audra's story. Though be forewarned, you'll want to read the first book in the series before you delve into this one.

Fear is a recurring theme throughout the plot. It acts as a catalyst that propels the characters into action and reaction, including the dastardly villain. From Audra's determination to grow a backbone to Ethan's valiant struggle to put the horrors of the past behind him, Connealy deals with a prevalent issue with surprising depth and clarity for a romantic comedy. And she does it with panache.Add in the toe-curling romance and an air of mystery and you come up with another winning read from Mary Connealy.

My Review:

Be prepared for a touch of vertigo as you rush to the end of this masterfully written suspense. My head is still spinning! And so is my mind -- busy assimilating the threads Eason pulled tight while mulling over the ones left dangling because this book doesn't end wrapped up in tidy little package. There is enough closure to satisfy Eason's avid readers, but enough left open-ended to leave those same readers chomping at the bit for more! No word on when the second book in the Deadly Reunions series will be out but it can't be soon enough for me!

Now, we all know that I am easily distracted by a good book. There isn't much that can stop my compulsive reading but I outdid myself this time! I neglected everything, including my poor, long-suffering dog, in order to race through When the Smoke Clears. All my valiant efforts to tear myself away to do something productive were thwarted by a fast-paced plot that didn't stop. With suspense, action, terror, an unraveling mystery, complicated relationships, difficult pasts and a developing romance there just wasn't an easy break to put the book aside...even when I reached the end!

One of the marvelous strengths of this book and Eason's writing in general, is in the incredible depth of characters and relationships. That kind of writing brings a richness to the overall plot and makes for an extremely satisfying read. If you love romantic suspense this is one you definitely don't want to miss!

My Review:

Gobsmackingly good! LOL, how's that for an endorsement? One of the things I appreciated the most is Elliott's attention to historical detail. The whole book is seeped in history, but it doesn't bog the reader down. I especially enjoyed the references to the social niceties of the day. Useful bits of information like a lady making sure she stands four feet away from a gentleman for propriety's sake. It felt like I had been swept back in time! Love that feeling of complete escape!

Kate's struggle to overcome her shyness is heart-breaking and Ben's empathy is so endearing! Together, the two already make an enthralling read but then Elliott throws in a riveting plot riddled with action and angst and emotional turmoil! Oh, my poor reader's heart! Let's just say I wept at the end. Great, big, heaving sobs.

This is the kind of book that makes you feel and think and ponder long after you've finished the last page. The fact that it is based on real people and events makes it all the more compelling. Move this on to the top of your TBR pile!

My Review:

Richly layered, Melby has mastered the art of the slow reveal. There is mystery and suspense in this contemporary novel, though I wouldn't categorize it as either. The suspense is in the characterization, the mystery is in the past and both are woven into an intricate pattern that will prompt a sit-down-and-read-in-one-sitting compulsion.

Emily is still recovering from a debilitating accident. Time and hard work slowly heal her body but her mind is an entirely different matter. For that emotional healing she needs God but she is hiding from Him. Her inner turmoil makes for a riveting read.

Jake was once an 'on-fire' Christian but time and life have faded his resolve. He's going through the motions but when he meets Emily all that changes. Their reluctant 'courtship' dance is immensely satisfying...and frustrating...to read!

Add in the rich historical detail (even though it's a contemporary) and this book makes a near-perfect read. The only way it could be better is if the author had made it longer!

My Review:

A nanny position may not be what Brittany is looking for, but I'd sure take it in a heart-beat. Especially since the girls come with a hunky, somewhat tormented, but oh-so-in-need-of-love father. Sigh. Who wouldn't want to find themselves isolated on a remote ranch with the likes of Parker Watson?! Okay, maybe he's got some issues and it will take a whole lot of warm fuzzies to melt those cold pricklies, but the effort is well worth it. This sweet, endearing romance comes with a bite though. Forgiveness and judgement play a prominent inspirational role and will leave you in quiet reflection.

My Review:

Have a defibrillator on hand for this one! Seriously. I'd just let out a woosh of relief, only to find myself sucking in my breath in horror as my eyes scanned the next paragraph! This book is hopping with action and suspense and I loved the mysterious edge to the plot. Suspense and mystery in one book -- what a treat! There's a classical feel to The Secret Heiress as well -- it has the vibes of a New Gothic Romance, a genre made popular in the 60's and 70's by authors like Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart and Phyllis A. Whitney. And don't talk to me about whodunnit because I gave up halfway through and figured everyone had! LOL.

The romance between Caroline and Donovan really works as well. There's tension and attraction sparking amidst their developing friendship. Of course, Reed doesn't give them much free time to explore those feelings. Not with all the...well, I won't ruin the suspense for you. Let's just say you don't want to miss Don going into full-blown Alpha male status! But oh my, Caroline is no shrinking violet. She's feisty and stubborn and can handle Don...most of the time.

Honestly, this is the kind of book you just won't want to put down. From the sinister setting, to the odd and sometimes creepy secondary characters to peril on every page -- The Secret Heiress is a keeper!

My Review:

Doing a happy dance because I've found a new favourite author! This Amish novel has enough unexpected twists and intriguing plot details to keep a reader on her toes...and turning pages. I ran a whole gamut of emotions during my visit to Whinburg, Pennsylvania -- outrage being the most surprising one. Senft expertly drew me into the lives of her characters and I soon forgot that they weren't living, breathing people. Hence my outrage of which I can't say any more without posting spoilers.

This is the first of the Amish Quilt Trilogy -- Three women, three hurting hearts, one quilt that binds them all together. The connection between Amelia and her friends, Emma and Carrie, provides the framework for this book as well as the series and Senft gives us delicious hints at what might be in store for these friends in future novels. I'm already anticipating the June release of The Hidden Life.

My Review:

Heart-warming and funny and poignant, Daddy's Little Matchmakers makes a delightful and romantic read. Veterinarian is high on my list of preferred hero occupations and there aren't many books written about them so that was the lure. You have to love a man who loves animals, right? But poor Eric's world has been turned upside down when his daughters decide he needs a wife and that made it so much fun to read. But this book isn't all romantic comedy. Y'Barbo has done a wonderful job of showing the grieving widower's agony, frustration and eventual ability to move on. It's an emotional journey and at times I felt sorry for Amy because Eric wasn't 'there' yet and at other times I wanted to thump Eric on the head to make him move faster. LOL. All in all, an entertaining romantic read.

My Review:

This is the kind of book you just want to curl up with and read straight through from beginning to end. Unfortunately life got in the way and I had to do essential things like work and sleep, but the story so ensnared me that even when I wasn't reading, I found myself anticipating the next time I would be able to.

Remy captivated me right from the start, so clearly at a crossroads in her life -- questioning past hurts but not learning from them as she struggles to find her place in the world. She's looking for meaning and security and love -- a special place to belong.

Adam, on the other hand, has that belonging place and the love of a large family. He is secure in his community but conflicted in his heart. A chance meeting between the two at a crucial point in both their lives is the impetus that hurdles them both into a complicated dance of conflicting emotions. Such a tangled tale! So many twists and turns punctuated by blissful interludes that stole my breath away.

Lauer has spun a captivating tale and I look forward to reading more from her.

My Review:

I said it in my preview and I'll say it again -- this edge-of-your-seat suspense has enough sharp turns to give you whiplash! Orchard keeps her readers on their toes from the very first action-packed scene. My head was spinning with possible suspects...or maybe it was because of the hunky hero, Ethan Reed. Talk about a knight in shining armor exploding onto the scene! Every girl's dream -- except for Kim's. Not that she doesn't appreciate an attractive man with a rescue gene. What girl wouldn't? But life's too complicated to go there...right? Little does she realize just how complicated things will get after their first powerhouse introduction!

A truly riveting read packed with a solid dose of inspirational insight that left me floored. A brilliant mix of romance, suspense and inspiration!

My Review:

Suspense mixed with the emotional inner-workings of a failed marriage bring an interesting blend of intrigue to this tale. Fans of the Lonestar Intrigue series will see a few familiar faces, in particular Sonny Mansfield (Texas Pursuit) who gets a sub-plot of his own. But Smith does a wonderful job of making sure the third in this series reads as a stand-alone.

Fast-paced and tense, the pursuit of their kidnapped son throws Shelly and Ryan together and that emotional journey is what kept me turning pages. Riddled with conflict and hurt, Smith does an amazing job of presenting both hero and heroine with compassion and understanding. I thought it would be easy to take sides. It wasn't. And with God as the focus, The Chase, took on a double-meaning. A brilliant work of fiction that tugged at my heartstrings.

My Review:

Boeshaar has managed to capture the essence of the pioneer spirit in this engrossing historical romance. As I read, I marveled at the courage of our ancestors. They left everything that was familiar to them, including their language, in order to move to this 'promised land'.

Kristen is wide-eyed with wonder and excitement in the first pages of this book, but that all changes quickly and she soon finds herself in an impossible situation. Confused, she no longer knows who she can trust and her feeling of security crumbles. Boeshaar makes sure that her readers accompany Kristen on her emotional journey; that they feel her confusion and fear. But the author doesn't forsake the heroine in spite of torturing her time and time again! In fact she created a noteworthy hero to help Kristen along the way. Though, come to think of it, sometimes he's at the root of her confusion too!

There's a great dynamic between Sam and Kristen in spite of the prejudice that seems to surround them. And Threads of Hope deals with different aspects of discrimination -- some of it from surprising sources. This is a story about a divided community and how easily individuals can be swayed from what is right and true. These compelling undercurrents ripple through the story, adding extra dimension and interest. Definitely a memorable read.

My Review:

Iffen you're strung tight as a clothesline readin' this here book will set you to feelin' fine as a frog's hair in no time! Take one dirt poor, Kentucky 'mail order bride', a high-falutin' dreamer of a groom (who is dreamy incidentally), add in a mix-up of grand proportions and what do you get? A funny, entertaining, not-to-be missed read! I had sooooo much fun with this book! Even developed a Kentucky twang for a spell!

Selina may not be what Michael was expecting, but she's exactly what he needs, even if it takes him purty near the whole darn book to figer that out! LOL. Brilliant plot device on the part of Ullrick. It set me all a'giggly right to the very end! Watching Michael. flounder and try to come to terms with finding himself married to the 'dream girl' of his nightmares made for a rollicking read! But there's also drama and tenderness and a poignant message about being true to yourself . This is one of the best romantic comedies I have ever read!

I thought I would offer these three books up as a set since they really work well together. For my reviews on each individual book see my previous three blogs. One thing I wanted to mention was how unique The Resolution for Men and The Resolution for Women are. Very distinctive from each other which is somewhat understandable since they are written by different people but I appreciated that the approach was different as well.

The women's devotional is written in first person, very much like a conversation you'd have with a girlfriend and the resolutions emphasize nurturing the family. The men's on the other hand is in third person -- here's the facts, here's the problems, here's how we can fix it. The women are given thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter; the men are given a challenge and a memory verse. And many of the men's resolutions encompass protecting the family. I love how the authors dared to celebrate the difference between the sexes in this way without worrying about the world's idea of political correctness.

This set would be great for a couple in any stage of their relationship but I think it would make a nifty and unique shower or wedding gift. And for singles -- well, it makes for some interesting and thought-provoking reading and might just help you articulate what you are ultimately looking for in a future husband.

My Review:

These thought-provoking devotionals on 13 resolutions were inspired by the movie Courageous. Each devotional ends with a few pointed questions that prompt self-exploration and honest reflection. Very eye-opening.

Written in 1st person, Shirer creates the ambiance of a girlfriends chatting over tea. Personable and engaging, her words envelope the reader with warmth and encouragement. One of my favourite reflections is the section entitled Purposefully Feminine. The author poses probing questions about how women today have turned away from the ideal of biblical womanhood and challenges the reader to examine her own life, encouraging her to go against the tide of the world.

A perfect compliment to the movie, Courageous and the companion book, The Resolution for Men.

My Review:

Dean has created an emotionally tumultuous historical drama. The story is fraught with insurmountable obstacles that seem impossible for the hero and heroine to successfully scale. And that impossibility kept me turning pages, wondering just how Dean was going to get Wade and Abby together. In particular, Abigail's inward struggles raised my blood-pressure and set me to venting. It seemed like every time one issue was resolved she would set up another emotional road block until I wanted to slap her silly! LOL. But I could see where she was coming from too so I could kind of sympathize with her. I had to keep reminding myself that while I had the benefit of knowing Wade's innermost thoughts, poor Abigail did not. But I still wanted to do her a personal injury before the end of the book!

My Review:

The Wild West meets the Amish? Wait a minute does that mean this is a Western or an Amish romance? Actually -- it's both and definitely unlike any other Amish book I've read. For one, it's laced with a sinister undercurrent not to mention gritty prose that left me shuddering. If you're familiar with Westerns, you'll know that there's nothing worse than ruthless bandits and the kind they have in Paradise Valley are definitely more ruthless than most. Their evil is such a stark contrast to the peace-loving Amish and that made the emotions churning in this reader's gut more violent then the kind found within the book's pages. Definitely a nail-biting read.

This is the second book in The Daughters of Caleb Bender series but it was easy to follow the plot threads. Cramer did a good job of setting the scene and dealing with backstory so a reader who hasn't read the first book could easily pick up where Paradise Valley left off. And while there is resolution at the end of The Captive Heart it's clear that there is much more to come. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

My Review:

I honestly don't know how Julie Klassen does it time and time again, but I am so grateful that she does. The Maid of Fairbourne Hall is just as stunning as her previous books. Stellar in fact. Brilliant. The kind of novel you want to escape into and never leave. Seriously, I read this in one sitting and it's 410 pages.! It wasn't that I couldn't put it down, it was that I refused to! What a perfect way to herald in the New Year!

First and foremost, her research is impeccable and she takes her readers into the belowstairs world of Regency England. That alone was fascinating -- but that we saw it all through the eyes of the aristocracy (Margaret) made so much more of an impact. And what a clever way to throw the heroine way out of her element! Definitely made for a page-turning read.

And Margaret really comes into her own as the story progresses. She transforms from a self-centered young lady of means to a compassionate woman who learns to look beyond her own needs. A very satisfying personal journey.

Add in the suspense over the threat of discovery and the romantic angle (which I can't say much about so as not to give anything away) and you will find The Maid of Fairbourne Hall an incredible and extremely satisfying read. Just clear your calendar before you pick it up because once you start reading, you won't want to stop!

Devastated, Cassie decides to try to find the hidden valley in the Black Hills of South Dakota where her father had dreamed of setting down roots. She has only one clue. She needs to find three huge stones that look like fingers on a giant hand. With Chief, a Sioux Indian who's been with the act for twenty years, and Micah, the head wrangler, she leaves the show and a bundle of heartache behind and begins a wild and daring adventure.

My Review:

A sweeping Western saga fraught with adventure. Loved the mix of unlikely characters who make the treacherous journey, and Cassie's background as a Wild West performer. Her struggle to marry the skills she learned for the show with the skills needed to survive in the wilderness brought depth to her character and an edge to the story. And who can resist an impish dog, magnificent horse and a buffalo named George? I do love a good animal-centered plot.

As the first of the Wild West Wind series, Valley of Dreams reads as a prelude and ends rather abruptly with a cliffhanger. I had the feeling that I was just about to start the real story when it ended. I'm not a fan of series that are totally dependent on each book -- the kind that read like a very long novel in three or four sections -- so the ending disappointed me since I was left with more questions than answers.

My Review:

An enthralling book with a refreshing plot. Very different from other Amish stories that I've read. I found the whole MDS angle fascinating and appreciated Schmidt's detailed account of the good works Mennonites and Amish do in the face of natural disasters. That whole angle of the book was fascinating. But so were Schmidt's memorable characters -- complex and intriguing, she created a believable community that was easy to relate to. I particularly liked the way Hester's character developed because, on the surface, she seemed to have it all together, but there were undercurrents that she hadn't dealt with and, in a way, she was just as wounded as John. Their journey towards healing was moving...and frustrating...with sparks of humour amidst the uncertainty, definitely making for a compelling read. This is the first of a new series, Women of Pinecraft, and I'm definitely looking forward to more!

My Review:

A pure delight! I'm trying to figure out a way to convey the magic in this book. It's more a family tale than a traditional hero/heroine romantic story. Fisher shares equal time amongst the most engaging characters and frankly -- M.K. totally steals the show! She's Julia's eleven-year-old sister. She has the verbosity of Anne Shirley, the adventurous spirit of Pippi Longstocking and the quick wit of Hermione Granger -- what a hoot! And don't get me started on Uncle Hank...or sweet, simple Menno...or Stern Fern...gracious she needs a whole review on her own! Let's just say this is one Amish family the likes of which you've never met between the pages of a book before.

Okay, so I've established that the characterization in The Keeper is stellar. Well, so is the plot and while there is a lot going on in the story, Julia's romance (or lack thereof) is one of the common threads that binds everything together. But there's a mystery too -- and heart-rending drama -- not to mention laughter in some of the toughest places. And a surprise that will steal your breath away and a conclusion that will leave you changed forever. The Keeper is definitely a keeper! And bonus -- it's the first of a series and the whole family will be back again in August 2012 (The Haven) and January 2013 (The Lesson).

My Review:

The Rose of Winslow Street is steeped in intrigue that begins on the very first page. The more I read, the more questions stuttered through my mind. Wh-wh-at....h-how...wh-why....huh? I was clamouring for answers that Camden cleverly held at bay, keeping me turning pages late into the night. What an artfully crafted plot! And each piece of the puzzle is revealed at just the right time in order to make the most dramatic impact.

But, oh my, there's laughter in unexpected places -- even in the midst of some dead-serious, dramatic scenes. Camden has laced humour all through the book. And that includes during the most volatile encounters between Michael and Libby. I'm grinning just thinking about some scenes that have left a lasting impression.

Michael leaps off the page in full warrior mode. Taciturn, protective, larger than life, like some misplaced medieval knight plunged into 19th century New England. I can't remember when I've had so much fun getting to know a character. Adorably boorish -- how's that for an oxymoron? -- he's driven by loyalty and an incredible sense of honour and steals every scene he is in, putting a capital S in the word Swoonworthy. My Review:

First things first. I'm a school librarian and I take notice of little details that most people don't. Like how a book is bound and the quality of the paper it is printed on and My Favorite Bible is superior on both counts. It's a solid little hardcover book with pages that are thick enough to withstand the chubby little fingers of eager toddlers. That's important when you're thinking about purchasing a keepsake bible. And this is definitely a keepsake.

I get the feeling that the authors definitely prayed over this project because they have managed to keep the spirit behind each bible story they share. There is rhythm and reverence in every tale, each complemented by cheerful artwork that is both childlike and engaging. The artist has cleverly hidden 77 butterflies within the pages of the book giving added enjoyment to young readers. An added bonus to parents and teachers is that each story makes a lovely readaloud and will be a pleasure to share. In addition, the authors have included both a family talk page (including a scripture and faith-based discussion ideas) and a family fun page (simple activities that compliment the bible story) at the end of each story.

This would make a great first bible for a toddler and ideal for beginning readers.

My Review:

Richly layered and impeccably crafted, this is definitely a book that will make a lasting impression on its readers! Rich in history, Alexander manages to bring the post-civil war era to life. I could feel the conflicting spirits of hope and despair; the division of a people and the lingering taste of bitterness in a defeated state. My emotions ran amok as I read! In fact I was left half-dreading each page the deeper I got into the book because I knew that Claire's secret couldn't stay buried forever but Alexander spun the reveal out with the expertise of a skilled storyteller and I was on tenterhooks the entire time. Brilliantly done.

The historical detail is brilliant as well. It stirred me to do my own research on Belmont Mansion and Mrs. Acklen. I love when fiction and non-fiction meet in a delicious way like this! It makes my reading experience all the more fulfilling.

And the romance -- oh-la-la! Sutton makes a fainting couch a must have for this read! LOL. Loved the way Alexander develops the attraction between Claire and Sutton and she put enough stumbling blocks in the way to keep this reader's heart dipping and diving for the duration of the read.

A Lasting Impression has the classic feel of an epic novel. It's the kind of book that carries you away to a different time and place -- immerses you in the story and leaves you richer for the read.

My Review:

There is an air of unhurried charm about this book. The story unfolds with gentle, deliberate care and it captivated me from the very first page. There's definitely drama and a plot rife with unexpected twists but I delighted in the unpredictability of what otherwise might have been a predictable story.

The inspirational message is embedded so deeply that it feels natural even as it testifies. MacLaren doesn't preach but she makes an impact nonetheless. And the scriptures that head each chapter are worth the price of the book. I've never seen such convicting passages laid out in sequential order like that. They made me pause and ponder and then eager to read on so that I could see how they applied in the character's lives.

And oh, what characters! Will Taylor, bent on change and a future of promise, delighting in the simplest things after being incarcerated for ten years. Everything is a wonder to him, including the faith he has embraced. He's the perfect foil for Livvie, who has buried herself away beneath the cloak of her mourning. Reading their love story was like watching an old black and white movie gradually changing into colour until it becomes a vibrant kaleidoscope by the end.

This is the kind of book that not only entertains, but it makes you think. A definite keeper shelf edition.

My Review:

Delightful. I love this genre and Melanie Dickerson is proving to excel at it. She has taken the bare bones of a popular fairy tale and fleshed it out into a satisfying read of substance. Loved the subtle little details that reminded me of the original story. I got such a thrill over spotting them and making the parallels. But Dickerson has created a memorable romance of her own, complete with tortured hero and desperate heroine. I love how she draws them together; the gentle way that Annabel comes to tame her 'beast'. A lovely tale that deserves to be read and cherished by teens and adults alike.

My Review:

Rich text and lush descriptions like the one below made Under a Desert Sky an unforgettable read for me.

Rather than hurl any more questions his way, I wrapped my frustration around the lantern's handle and vowed not to be in the dark about anything. Ever again.

Doesn't reading that cloak you in emotion and resolve? It's this kind of writing that makes this read an exceptional one. And what a different 'voice' Mills has compared to her other books. It's as if she bored right under Eva's skin so that her first-person account resonates with truth and passion.

Eva captivated me from the very first paragraph -- in fact this book has an amazing opening hook! I've never met a heroine who grew with such grace and wisdom. I enjoyed every minute I spent with her.

And Tahoma -- well, we all I know I'm not one to shirk from the tall, broody, protective type. :-) Again, though, Mills has dug deep and fleshes out his character with such care that I feel like he's a real person. And oh -- all that lovely, angsty romance! Mills doesn't give Eva and Tahoma an easy time of it, but that makes the read all the more rewarding.

The suspense is cleverly woven throughout the pages -- it crests and wanes and took this reader by surprise over and over again. And it doesn't ease up until the very last page.

Under a Desert Sky is definitely going on my keeper shelf and hopefully yours as well...

My Review:

I've only read Trish Perry's novella, 'Tis the Season so far (It's the ACFW Book Club's pick for this month) but I wanted to post this review now to give time for the Giveaways. My internet has been wonky at home which is why I'm late posting them this week. Anyway, I really enjoyed Perry's holiday tale. It's the right mix of comedy and angst with a few refreshing surprises thrown in for good measure.

Drew isn't the confident hero I am used to reading about. Perry shows his vulnerable side, allowing him to be embarrassed a time or two and a little bit awkward with tendencies towards bumbling. Completely endearing and definitely appealing. It made the story all the more believable for me.

There's great interaction between Nikki and her sister, Hannah and an outrageously funny secondary character, Gigi, who adds spice to the tale.

Another unique twist to this tale is that the hero and heroine don't connect immediately. Perry takes time to set the stage and let's her readers get to know Nikki and Drew first. We get to watch their attraction to each other from afar, anticipating every moment that brings them closer to discovering each other. This brought a very realistic feel to their love story.

A wonderful, cheery, feel-good kind of Christmas read!

My Review:

Emotionally charged and positively riveting, A Harvest of Hearts will touch your heart and stay there long after you read the last word. Hilton digs deep, uncovering layers of pain and misunderstanding in her characters. The family relationships in this book are so real! It made my heart ache to watch her characters struggle.

The contrast between Shanna and Matthew is profound -- like oil and water they shouldn't mix, but they do, though not without difficulty. I love how Matthew's steadfast calm is a perfect foil to Shanna's volatile, reactive nature. And how sometimes that calm sets her off even more. But his constancy is swoonworthy -- quiet, unyielding, but oh so gentle and compassionate...oops, excuse me while I slide into a puddle. He's that delectable a hero!

The inspirational thread is strong and resonated with me. Hilton may have set out to entertain readers with a story but she's managed to include plain truths that we would all do well to remember. A touching, tender, thought-provoking read.

My Review:

A unique blend of thrilling suspense, burgeoning romance and the wonder of the Christmas season. The name Lynette Eason conjures up the words 'compelling read' and her latest Love Inspired is no exception. I appreciate the author's detail-oriented suspense -- written in a taut and fast-paced style, it kept me turning pages right to the end. But this time I figured out the whodunnit ahead of the hero and heroine. :-)

My Review:

I was transfixed by this novella. Read it in one sitting as a matter of fact. Poor Simba missed another walk on account of a good book. I have to stop doing that or both our waistlines will suffer! Clipston weaves a tight plot line with surprising depth and characterization that makes this a rewarding read. Her pacing is impeccable, nothing drags, rather each scene builds seamlessly to the climax. I think it's more difficult to write a really good short novel but Clipston has certainly mastered the art. I felt as satisfied as if I'd just finished an epic Amish trilogy. Speaking of which -- readers who have read The Kauffmann Bakery Series will be excited to catch glimpses of old friends. I haven't read the series (but certainly will now!) but didn't feel anything lacked in Naomi's Gift because of that. A lovely Christmas read that captures the essence of the season.

My Review:

Shelley Shephard Gray has rapidly made her way to the top of my favourite romance author list! I love the way she develops a relationship. The way she builds attraction and tension and then shatters it with conflict. Over and over and over again. LOL. But her angst is never for naught. She delves deep insider her characters and brings their fears to light...and sets them free. In Christmas in Sugarcreek, that results in a story that turns despair into hope during one of the most sacred seasons of the year. A beautiful book that will bless your Christmas season.

My Review:

How's this for an opening line: "If my life was a book, no one would read it." Told in first-person, Alice goes on to prove herself wrong in this funny and poignant and completely spell-binding story. I bonded with Alice on the very first page -- I mean how could I resist a passionate bibliophile with a penchant for getting into trouble? Alice may live in the pages of her beloved books when we first meet her but she quickly begins writing her own absorbing story when life happens...in a really big way.

This book is full of surprises and priceless gems of wisdom and humour and tender romance, not to mention the deeper kind. It's Alice's journey out of fiction and into the real world and it's a marvel to watch her eyes open as she sees reality for the first time. She fights it tooth and nail, of course, feet dragging as petulantly as any self-centered young woman might. But her adventures along Wonderland Creek leave her transformed.

This coming-of-age story put me in mind of The Waltons. Same depression era and small-town life. Austin descriptions are rich and set the tone and setting of the rural south. Even more importantly, she manages to capture the desperation of the Depression while capturing the strength of the people. Lillie, a secondary character drew me in page after page. It's a marvel how Austin wove seemingly separate threads into a beautiful tapestry of words and emotions.

Wonderland Creek is a book of substance and beauty and well worth the read.

My Review:

Herne is a maestro of words! And she's created a symphony of them in this compelling Christmas read. I'm not quite sure how to describe her writing style -- she definitely measures her words, but each one counts and together they create an explosion of emotions that carry me away every time. I ended up reading this in one sitting because it was impossible to put down. She hooked me and reeled me in chapter after chapter and before I knew it I'd read the morning away. (My poor dog was not happy about the missed walk!)

There's a wealth of incredible characters that give such depth to this Christmas story. Her supporting cast provide humour, counsel and a good kick in the pants when required. Love that! Herene really excels at writing relationships -- the give and take, the warmth, angst, humour -- the whole gamut of emotions that come with the territory of a developing romance. I love how it builds between Callie and Matt -- the attraction hits them between the eyes, but Herne takes them on a slow and cautious journey that makes for an incredibly satisfying read. This is one Christmas story you don't want to miss!

Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do. But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

My Review:

Catchy title for a fetching, light-hearted romance. The comedy was prevalent in nearly every scene. From subtle humour to out-loud belly laughs, I smiled my way through this one. (Which was a little embarrassing since I do most of my reading on the bus.)

Gist is meticulous in her characterization and that's what builds this into a memorable read. From Georgie's obsession with birds (there's a hysterical scene where she sums up Luke's appearance as if he were one of her bird sightings. So funny, I'm chuckling just thinking about it.) And Luke just happens to be the exact opposite to Georgie in all the wrong ways! They're a disaster waiting to happen. And it's that contrast that really sparks the humour over and over again.

That doesn't mean there isn't drama in Love on the Line. There are a few grim scenes (and one in particular that made me cringe and I didn't fully understand until the end.) Doesn't that just make you want to read this book more? :-) I hope so, because this is romantic comedy at it's best.

My Review:

A stirring story that all takes place in just a few days' time but made an impact on both the characters and this reader. Expertly told from varying viewpoints, Fisher succeeded in drawing me in quickly and keeping a hold of my attention until the very last glorious page. There's a timeless quality to this tale -- filled with heartache and peppered with gentle humour. In fact, I was profoundly affected by Mattie's epiphany towards the end of the book. My 'aha' moment paralleled hers. I love it when a book speaks to me like that. It's a precious gift from author to reader.

Fisher has done an amazing job of conveying the spiritual magic that is Christmas. A definite must read.

Vivid, heart-wrenching and definitely heart-warming, the author has penned a story that shows us the powerful difference one constant follower of Christ can make in many lives. Have a Kleenex box handy and be prepared for more than just a few goosebump moments. This is a timeless tale you'll want to immerse yourself in. I read it in one sitting because I simply couldn't stop.

My Review:

I think Long fried my brain with her sizzling passages so I'm not quite sure I can make this review a coherent one. It was emotionally engaging from the very first page. We hurdle into Lilly and Jacob's story in a powerful way. Long doesn't ease us into their story, she catapults us into the middle of it! And from then on it's an emotional roller coaster ride with an incredible deep layer of faith to support it.

What will melt your heart (and a good number of your bones as well) is the interplay between Lilly and Jacob as they get to know each other. I have never read anything quite like it! Their growing desire goes deeper than mere physical need. They strive for an intimacy of both heart and mind surrounded by a solid faith structure and that's what increased the emotional rewards of this read for me. I'm near speechless over how good it was. In fact, I read the last bit twice! Let's just say that Jacob is a romantic with a capital R!!!!!!

Masterfully told, Long has captured every nuance of a developing relationship while peppering her story with wonderful comic relief along the way. I particularly adored the play-by-plays between Jacob and his brother, Seth! And I'm desperately hoping that she's sown the seeds for the next book which will hopefully be Seth's love story. He definitely deserves one!

My Review:

Well I'm sure glad I didn't give up on cowboys after all my swooning over a Scottish hero with a brogue last week!!!! Because Clayton is the epitome of perfection right down to his exasperating hard-headedness. And he wouldn't be much of a cowboy without that mile-wide stubborn streak, would he? Luckily it's off-set by copious amounts of tenderness and the endearing quality of addressing Vanessa as sweetheart and sugar and darlin'...(and just so you know, a shiver goes up my spine when a cowboy starts dropping his 'g's!)

This is a classic Western, with a dastardly villain and trail rides and even a run-in with a 'working girl'. If that isn't enough to pique your fancy, Gray has charged her story with emotional angst that will keep you turning pages long after 'lights out'. The aftermath of the civil war has marked each character's life in some way and the author has done a superb job of developing that common, tragic thread. This is a story about surging forward out of your past and finding hope in a new future. Gray has written some beautiful, thought-provoking truths that span time and generations. That alone makes this a must read. The toe-curling romance and all that action and angst is just an extra bonus.

My Review:

This slim little book packs a wallop and proves that Cindy Woodsmall can do concise without losing out on the depth and detail she is known for. Mattie is such a fun character -- and very different from your typical Amish heroine. Love her dreaminess, her klutziness, the way she can turn disaster into something fun and light-hearted. Except for her broken engagement that is. She knows how to harbour a grudge and I honestly can't blame her since she thinks one thing while the reality is far different.

I spent my time being alternately irritated and enamoured with Gideon. Honestly --he's...he's...just like a man!!!! Thinks like a man, acts like a man and believe me that isn't always a good thing! So there's fireworks at times, angst a plenty, but Woodsmall weaves it all together with some wonderfully heart-warming, light-hearted moments as well. A great combination for a Christmas read -- though there's not a lot of Christmas in the read. LOL. It's not as seasonal as I thought it would be, but that didn't detract from the story at all. In fact it makes it more universally appealing. Definitely not a book that has to be read only at Christmas.

My Review:

What a refreshing read! And Gavin MacKenzie is a welcome diversion from the plethora of cowboy heroes parading through Christian Fiction these days. Not that I have anything against cowboys, you understand -- oh my heaven's no! (she says, fanning herself vigorously at the images that come to mind from recent reads.) BUT there is something about a warrior hero with a brogue, isn't there? Be still my wildly beating heart! Gavin is the perfect candidate for the role too. Level-headed, strong, compassionate, kind, knows his own heart...it just gets better and better -- or it would if Taylor didn't keep throwing literary daggers his way!

I loved the village of outcasts. Each character is so unique and Taylor uses them in a powerful way to carry Christ's message of hope -- a central theme carried throughout the book. If you love a solid medieval romance with lots of action, toe-curling romance (I feel a swoon coming on just thinking about a scene or two) and a strong inspirational thread then look no further. Highland Sanctuary definitely fits the bill.

My Review:

Mills deftly combines romance, action, suspense and drama into a riveting read. The intricate details of this suspense build into a page-turning frenzy by the end. I particularly loved the slow-burn of the romance angle. Ash is just so anti-woman at the beginning and it was great fun to be inside his head as his preconceived notions slowly unravel. And Meghan is so cool and collected! It definitely provided a bit of comic relief in an otherwise angst-riddled plot. This is the kind of book you'll want to finish in a day because you just won't want to put it down!

MY REVIEW:

Rich, vibrant, descriptive writing and a profound depth to the storyline make Along Wooded Paths an incomparable read. This is the kind of book you can happily lose yourself in and I certainly did. It packs an emotional punch too and I admit to reading with trepidation at times. I was as torn as Marianna was between Ben and Aaron and I ached for both men who obviously loved her. Goyer had me squirming a time or two and I'd love to participate in a book club chat about the romantic angles in this book since I can't here without posting spoilers.

What touched me the most though was Marianna's spiritual growth -- her awakening to a deeper understanding of her relationship with the Lord. It's definitely something any Christian could parallel in their own life and for that reason I'd say that this is more than an Amish romance. I still loved the Amish setting though, and the way Along Wooded Paths shows a community of Englisch and Amish who interact more than in most.

Goyer has posted a teaser from the next book in the series that has me on edge and anxiously waiting the its release. I'm glad she isn't through with Marianna and the Sommer family!

My Review:

Emotionally riveting and powerful, this book consumed me. Peterson has created a believably flawed family struggling to overcome the secrets of their past. The Coopers are as dysfunctional as they get and each daughter is clearly a product of that dysfunction. Peterson's strength is in her detailed characterizations. The sisters, Bailee, Geena and Piper, in particular, had solid reasons for behaving the way they did and Peterson eases us beneath layers and layers of confusion, coping strategies and fear until we come to the startling heart of the matter.

Add in Mark Delahunt -- stalwart, dependable, patient and kind -- he's almost too good to be true, but exactly what Bailee needs during this tumultuous time. He provides an anchor of stability to the whole family in the midst of their crumbling secrets. And he's in love with Bailee. Has been for a long time. But her past hinders her future and witnessing her struggle to come to grips with it all is heart-wrenching. Peterson's use of first person narrative makes it all the more poignant.

This is a tale about survival and growth and the goodness of God. It's about not giving up even when you have to let go and it will haunt you long after you read the last word.

My Review:

Utterly captivating! Miller has gone to great effort to get her historical facts right and it certainly shows in this sweeping saga. I loved the unique setting and the author used it to the best advantage in this gripping plot. Miller's vivid details made each scene jump off the page and it was very easy to lose myself in the wealth of this story. In fact, I was very reluctant to give it up when I reached the conclusion.

Stunning passages, endearing characters and a stellar plot will engage any reader's emotions. Katie's struggles with an abusive past are particularly poignant and just when everything seems hopeless...well...Miller doesn't leave it there. She crafted an incredible, page-turning conclusion that left me breathless. This one should definitely have a place on your Keeper shelf.

My Review:

Radcliffe has written a polished, heart-warming and inspiring romance that will thrill 'classic romance' readers. I love how the characters in this book -- especially Ryan -- were able to look forward instead of wallowing in the past. This twist brought a different perspective to the plot and made for a refreshing read.

Radcliffe also excels with her secondary characters. She has a knack for creating one in each book that almost steals the show from the hero and heroine. In Oklahoma Reunion that would be Gramps. Memorable, funny -- a Grandpa Walton kind of guy who provided a steadying influence amidst family turmoil. But this wasn't an angst-riddled romance. Rather it's a story that brings hope -- a real pleasure to read.
