STEWART, CARLA
A FLYING AFFAIR
Ever since Mittie Humphreys agreed to join dashing brainstorming pilot Ames for a joyride in his airplane, her lifelong love of horses has been surpassed by one thing -- a longing for the skies. It seems she's not the only one. With Charles Lindbergh making his victory tour in the Spirit of St. Louis, aviation fever is spreading across the country. Mittie knows flying is the perfect focus for the soaring ambition and taste for adventure within her, and whenever she can slip away from her duties on her family's prosperous Kentucky horse farm, she heads to the airfield.
Considering their shared passion, it's no surprise that Ames begins to vie for Mittie's time. But when handsome British aviator Bobby York offers her flying lessons, he is equally surprised -- and beguiled -- by Mittie's grit and talent. Drvien to succeed, Mittie will do whatever it takes to compete in the Women's National Air Derby alongside Amelia Earhart. But when Calista 'Peach' Gilson, a charming Southern belle, becomes her rival both professionally and in love, Mittie must learn how to navigate her heart's romantic longings as well as the skies.
My Review:
What an exciting read! It's the late nineteen twenties and the world is all agog over aviation -- Lindbergh, Earhart, pioneering women who are beginning to break out of the conventional mold society has placed them in for centuries. And Mittie is just such a woman. Indulged by her father, she's the despair of her mother. A determined heroine with a mind of her own. And there's the problem. For all her adventurous spirit, there's a certain naivete about her and she learns some hard lessons in her quest to follow her dreams.
I don't want to say too much about the romance since there are two men vying for Mittie's attention. Suffice to say I had a clear favourite and there was more than one occasion when I wanted to shake some sense into her. :-)
A tight plot with plenty of twists and turns and some hair-raising aerial scenes kept my nose buried in the book even though I had plenty of other things that needed doing. I do so love getting lost in a good story! You might say I spent most of the day with my head in the clouds right along with Mittie.
A captivating and exhilarating read.

DeleteI haven't yet read any of Carla's books though but I've seen them and thought they looked good (just haven't had time to get to them yet). A Flying Affair sounds like just the kind of book I like to read.

I've only read one other of hers. Must hunt the others down. Good luck, Pam.
DeleteLove how you worded this: "For all her adventurous spirit, there's a certain naivete about her and she learns some hard lessons in her quest to follow her dreams." I am going to pick the first guy, Ames, and not the newcomer good-looker. "Steady Freddy" is the one. :D Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House
ReplyDeleteLOL -- you're just going to have to read the book, Kathleen. Good luck.
DeleteAn early 1900's read is always fascinating because women were up and coming in a lot of things. Not wanting to "fit" the mold society had them in. I love a good story where the heroine goes against the grain to prove her own worth or that she can compete with any man :-)
ReplyDeleteThat being said, this sounds like just the kind of story I could go for! I read one other series by a different author (the name escapes me now) about a woman bush pilot in Alaska set in early times too. She was an avid pilot & had her own plane and her dream was to become the best bush pilot around. Of course when she landed her first job as a pilot, she got quite a lot of guff from the men! They thought it was bad luck to have a woman on the team :-) She quickly proved her grit and tenacity but not without a lot of grief! Wonderful series!
Carla's a new-to-me author and I'd love to add "A Flying Affair" to my shelf...thanks for the chance, Kav!

Oh -- are you talking about Bonnie Leon's series? I loved that one too. There's something so intriguing about a pioneering woman pilot. Good luck, Trixi.
DeleteHAHA....Kav I KNEW if anyone knew who I was talking about, it would be you!! That's the series I'm talking about. Wasn't it amazing :-) This one sounds just as good. And me, myself & I, love pioneering women no matter the profession!
DeleteYes -- I enjoyed Bonnie's series...even if it was one of those angsty continuing sorts. LOL
DeleteSounds like a fascinating read!
