The Hidden Life

GIVEAWAY

SENFT, ADINA
THE HIDDEN SENFT

Emma Stolzfus has never been courted or kissed, and now that she's 30, it has become her place as the unmarried daughter to look after her elderly mother. But in the dark hours when her mother is asleep, Emma writes letters and essays to Amish periodicals, short stories, and even a novel she's been working on for the last five years.

When a New York literary agent, Tyler West, takes an interest in her work, Emma secretly goes to meet him. When she returns, something about her is different-and the men of her Amish community take notice. But how can she settle for second best when her heart made its choice years ago-to a man she can never have? Only her friends, Amelia and Carrie, know the truth in her heart as they work together on their quilt ... and only they understand when an old tragedy comes to light that will either hurt or heal ... and reveal Emma's hidden life.

My Review:

Emma is one of my most favourite heroines to date! Just loved her sardonic wit -- the private asides oozing in sarcasm that she was smart enough not to vocalize! Unexpected humour abounds all through this book.

The second in the Amish Quilt series, The Hidden Life reads well as a standalone, though you might want to grab the first book, The Wound Heart, just because it's that good! One of the great appeals in this series is that it revolves around three friends -- Amelia, Carrie and Emma -- and all three play a prominent role in each book. I love how Senft highlights their friendship while placing the spotlight on one woman per story.

I also quickly became enamoured with the book publication plotline. When Emma met a literary agent for the first time, so did I. The hopeful writer in me cheered him on and anguished over Emma's plight as she sought God's will for her life. The nearly unbearable tension was happily relieved from time to time by Emma's suddenly blossoming love life.  More scope for humour in unexpected places. You just have to love a klutzy Amish woman! And a community who can't quite believe their eyes!

The Hidden Life is a perfect summer read for Amish lovers and even includes a bonus first glimpse at The Tempted Soul (book three) which will come out in March 2013. It just can't get any better than that!

Lethal Legacy

GIVEAWAY

HANNON, IRENE
LETHAL LEGACY

The police say her father's death was suicide. But Kelly Warren says it was murder -- and she has new evidence that she believes proves it. Detective Cole Taylor doesn't put much credence in her claim and nothing in his case reviews suggests foul play. But when Kelly ends up in the emergency room with a suspicious life-threatening medical condition, the incident strikes him more than just coincidence. Digging deeper, he discovers she's linked to a long-ago crime. Is history repeating itself? And who wants Kelly silenced?

My Review:

Exquisite writing doesn't begin to describe this breath-taking read. Hannon just keeps getting better and better with each book she writes. Though third (and final) in the Guardians of Justice series, Lethal Legacy easily reads as a stand alone. However, fans of the series will be thrilled to connect with the Taylor clan once again.

This time it's Cole who takes the spotlight. Nothing like a reformed rake police detective with a nose for mystery playing the role of hero in a romantic suspense novel! Cole was a perfect fit for this reader! And I loved how Hannon developed the relationship between hero and heroine. She took the time in every scene to up their attraction, increase their connection, lower their defenses -- even the scenes Kelly and Cole weren't together in! As a result the romance took as much precedence as the suspense and it made the read all the more satisfying.

In fact, between the romantic development and the suspense at every turn, I couldn't bring myself to stop reading. Devoured this one in a day -- only coming up for air long enough to attend church in the morning! Put this one on your TBR list -- waaay at the top -- and clear a day to settle down for an amazing read!

Through Rushing Water

GIVEAWAY

RICHMOND, CATHERINE
THROUGH RUSHING WATER

Sophia has her life all planned out-but her plan didn't include being jilted or ending up in Dakota Territory.

Sophia Makinoff is certain 1876 is the year that she'll become the wife of a certain US Congressman, and happily plans her debut into the Capitol city. But when he proposes to her roommate instead, Sophia is stunned. Hoping to flee her heartache and humiliation, she signs up with the Board of Foreign Missions on a whim.

With dreams of a romantic posting to the Far East, Sophia is dismayed to find she's being sent to the Ponca Indian Agency in the bleak Dakota Territory. She can't even run away effectively and begins to wonder how on earth she'll be able to guide others as a missionary. But teaching the Ponca children provides her with a joy she has never known-and never expected-and ignites in her a passion for the people she's sent to serve.

It's a passion shared by the Agency carpenter, Willoughby Dunn, a man whose integrity and selflessness are unmatched. The Poncas are barely surviving. When US policy decrees that they be uprooted from their land and marched hundreds of miles away in the middle of winter, Sophia and Will wade into rushing waters to fight for their friends, their love, and their destiny.

My Review:

A historical romance with substance. You'll relive a piece of American history that should never be forgotten. The plight of Native Americans is heart-wrenching to read -- the blatant prejudice, well-meaning ignorance, mis-guided charity -- well let's just say there's enough fodder to drive a tender-hearted reader into despair.

Thank goodness for Sophia and Will. Their passion for the Ponca people and their way of life is a refreshing change -- though will it be enough to change the course of the tribe's fate? Well, you'll just have to read  Through Rushing Water to find out.

When I first started reading I wasn't sure if I would like Sophia. She wasn't shallow exactly, but definitely single-minded with a teensy lean towards entitlement -- looking forward to becoming a congressman's wife and the place in society that would afford her. Those dreams are quickly dashed and on the rebound she volunteers as a missionary to exotic China. It's when she finds herself in the Dakota Territories instead that we really see what Sophia is made of. Richmond has given her a fascinating background which has uniquely prepared her for all she encounters.

And it's as I watched Sophia come into her own that I came to love her. Much like Will, I was dubious at first, but quickly enchanted, astonished, and entertained by Sophia's antics. And humour in unexpected places! Oh my, I'm still grinning!

This is the kind of the book that has your alternately laughing and crying and screaming out in frustration not to mention sighing over the slow and exacting romantic development. Definitely a fulfilling and thought-provoking read. Bravo, Catherine Richmond

Rare Earth

GIVEAWAY

BUNN, DAVIS
RARE EARTH

Marc Royce stares out of the helicopter, a sense of foreboding rising with the volcanic cloud. Below, the Rift Valley slashes across Africa like a scar. Decades of conflicts, droughts, and natural disasters have left their mark.

Dispatched to audit a relief organization, Royce is thrust into the squalor and chaos of Kenyan refugee camps. But his true mission focuses on the area's reserves of once-obscure minerals now indispensable to high-tech industries. These strategic elements--called rare earths--have inflamed tensions on the world's stage and stoked tribal rivalries. As Royce prepares to report back to Washington, he seizes on a bold and risky venture for restoring justice to this troubled land.

But this time, Royce may have gone too far.

My Review:

Be prepared to take an action-packed thrill of a ride! Bunn grabbed my attention on the very first page and didn't shake me loose until the very last word. What an exciting read! Masterfully descriptive action scenes are guaranteed to take your breath away and leave you with the urge to stand up and cheer.

Marc Joyce is a larger than life hero -- the kind you love to watch on the big screen -- he has that kind of presence. The epitome of what is noble and true and right in one lethal package.

Powerfully moving, the inspirational thread is the foundation of the plot. I got goosebumps more than once as Bunn shows his readers what God can accomplish among His Believers.

An exhilarating read with a touching promise of romance. I LOVED it!

Tidewater Inn

GIVEAWAY

COBLE, COLLEN
TIDEWATER INN

Welcome to Hope Beach. A place of intoxicating beauty . . . where trouble hits with the force of a hurricane.

Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the Outer Banks could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer's talent and love of history. She's delighted to learn of the family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she's met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.

But Libby soon realizes that the only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brother and sister are convinced she's there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, and Libby's under suspicion for the crime.

Libby's dream come true is becoming a nightmare. Her only option is to find her friend and prove her innocence, or lose everything on the shores of Hope Island.

My Review:

What a riveting read! Plot twists abound as Coble packs every scene with intrigue and suspense. Libby finds herself in an impossible situation that only grows worse with each page turn. There are mysteries inside mysteries in Tidewater Inn that leaves the heroine (and her readers) fighting to maintain their equilibrium right to the very end.

The author has created an interesting mix of characters along with an alluring hero to help (or hinder) Libby's quest for the truth. And Coble fans will be thrilled to find Bree and her search and rescue dog, Samson ( Rock Harbor series) lending a hand (or paw, as the case may be.) Tidewater Inn is a book you won't want to put down once you've opened it, so clear your calendar and be prepared to be swept away by this tumultuous story.

A Plain Death

GIVEAWAY

FLOWER, AMANDA
A PLAIN DEATH

Welcome to Appleseed Creek, the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country, where life is not as serene as it seems.

While her Cleveland friends relocated to Southern California and Italy, 24-year-old computer whiz Chloe Humphrey moves with some uncertainty to Appleseed Creek to direct technology services at a nearby college. Her first acquaintance is Becky, an ex-Amish teenager looking for a new home.

While driving Chloe’s car, Becky collides with a buggy, killing an Amish elder. But what looks like an accident is soon labeled murder when police discover the car’s cut brake line.

Now, Chloe must take on the role of amateur sleuth to discover who the real intended victim was before the murderer makes a second attempt. Becky’s handsome Amish-turned-Mennonite brother, Timothy, a local carpenter, comes in handy along the way. With God’s help, they’ll solve the mystery that’s rocking this small community.

My Review:

While not a debut novel, A Plain Truth is Flower's debut to the Amish genre and all I can say is welcome, welcome, welcome! The author has contracts for 6 Amish mysteries that will pour out of both Christian and secular publishing houses over the next few years and yes, she's that good.

Told in first person, I really liked Chloe's snappy 'voice'. She has a plan and she's going to stick to it until she gets to Appleseed Creek and is forced to turn into Nancy Drew . Chloe's just a little bit awkward, a touch nerdy and so easy to like.

And what an outstanding cast of characters Flower throws in with her! Including Amish-turned-Mennonite handyman extraordinaire, Timothy Troyer. Their light romance is a perfect match for this cozy mystery. A lovely escape read for mystery lovers (whether they enjoy the Amish genre or not.)

When Hope Blossoms

GIVEAWAY!!!

SAWYER, KIM VOGEL
WHEN HOPE BLOSSOMS

Amy Knackstedt hopes a new start in Weaverly, Kansas, will help heal the pain of losing her husband and provide a better future for her three children. But her new neighbor, Tim Roper, is not pleased to have an Old Order Mennonite family living next to his apple orchard. Tim left the Mennonite faith years ago and doesn't want any reminders of his former life.

Yet when circumstances throw Amy and Tim together, they form a friendship that surprises them both. Will past hurts always be a barrier between them, or will this tentative relationship blossom into something more?

My Review:

Sweet, sweet, SWEET! Brilliantly crafted, Sawyer delivers a story that brings hope from despair -- a theme that aptly matches the title. Amazingly tight plotting blends three life experiences into one incredibly moving conclusion. Sawyer is a gifted storyteller.

Told from three POVs -- Amy's, Tim's and Beckah's (Amy's 13-year-old daughter) -- their diverse take on life and circumstances propel the story along at the perfect pace. I'm still marveling at how various story strands meshed together, building to one of the best feel-good endings I've ever read. Just LOVED this book so much.

And yes it is a Mennonite story -- but it's so much more as well with themes that will attract and satisfy even non-Amish/non-Mennonite fans. Themes like searching for a fresh start, finding ones faith, staying true to that faith no matter what, coping with grief, and learning to accept help from others in times of need. When Hope Blossoms is a wonderful celebration of the hope Christ can bring into every life.

Wildflowers From Winter

GIVEAWAY!

GANSHERT, KAREN
WILDFLOWERS FROM WINTER

A young architect at a prestigious Chicago firm, Bethany Quinn has built a life far removed from her trailer park teen years. Until an interruption from her estranged mother reveals that tragedy has struck in her hometown and a reluctant Bethany is called back to rural Iowa. Determined to pay her respects while avoiding any emotional entanglements, she vows not to stay long. But the unexpected inheritance of farmland and a startling turn of events in Chicago forces Bethany to come up with a new plan.

Handsome farmhand Evan Price has taken care of the Quinn farm for years. So when Bethany is left the land, he must fight her decisions to realize his dreams. But even as he disagrees with Bethany's vision, Evan feels drawn to her and the pain she keeps so carefully locked away.

For Bethany, making peace with her past and the God of her childhood doesn't seem like the path to freedom. Is letting go the only way to new life, love and a peace she's not even sure exists?

My Review:

Wow -- what a stunning debut novel! Not sure if I have the words to describe the power in Ganshert's! Raw comes to mind first in relation to Bethany. She is buried deep under so many protective layers that I didn't exactly like her at first but I knew there were good reasons for the barricades she'd built up around her heart and it took the whole book  to lay them bear in a gut-wrenching emotional Epiphany that left me weeping.

What a contrast to Evan! Though propelled by anger (and justifiably so in many cases), we get the sense of a troubled past that he has dealt with and become stronger for. Bethany is his total opposite -- at least it looks that way on the surface -- and they butt heads from the very first page. The way Ganshert weaves these two stories together is sheer poetry (as is her delightful way with words.) Compelling scenes draw them closer together and just as quickly tear them apart. Over and over and over again. Their love story is gritty and real and filled with God's grace. A journey that will wring a gamut of emotions out of every reader. This one is worth it's weight in gold!

The Gifted

GIVEAWAY

GABHART, ANN
THE GIFTED

Some dreams were meant to come true.

Jessamine Brady has been in the Shaker Village for half her young life, but in spite of how she loves her sisters there, she struggles to conform to the strict rules. Instead she entertains dreams of the world outside. When Tristan Cooper seems to step out of those dreams to entice her into the forbidden realm beyond the Shaker Village, her life turns upside down.

Will Jessamine be able to survive the storms of the world? Or will she retreat back to the peace of Harmony Hill?

My Review:

Jessamine's story certainly makes for a captivating read. Gabhart captured the essence of an innocent young woman wrestling with what she's been taught in the Shaker village and the tug of her deceased Granny's sage words. Beautifully written with rich language and the lilting cadence of this unique people, The Gifted is also filled with a surprising amount of humour. It just seems to spill from Jessamine through her innocent remarks and observations that are at such odds with the Shaker lifestyle.

As Jessamine struggles to find balance, her life journey takes a surprising turn that gives the story an almost haunting feel. Gabhart is a master of words and she spins them with such delightful detail that it became impossible for me to put this book down. Thank goodness I'm on holidays! Complex and compelling, The Gifted makes for a fascinating read.

A Baby Between Them

GIVEAWAY

GRIGGS, WINNIE
A BABY BETWEEN THEM

For two months, Nora Murphy has cared for the abandoned infant she found on their Boston-bound ship. Settled now in Faith Glen, Nora tells herself she's happy. She has little Grace, and a good job as housekeeper to Sheriff Cameron Long. She doesn't need anything more—not the big family she always wanted, or Cam's love….

A traumatic childhood closed Cam off to any dreams of family life. Yet somehow his lovely housekeeper and her child have opened his heart again. When the unthinkable occurs, it will take all their faith to reach a new future together.

My Review:

This is the third book in the multi-authored Irish Brides series and just as good as the first one, The Wedding Journey by Cheryl St. John. I somehow missed the middle book, Mistaken Bride, by Renee Ryan but it's on order! Amazing how three authors managed to keep the continuity (especially the characterization of the Murphy sisters) while each wrote their own unique tale.

A Baby Between Them is the oldest sister's story and, sadly, the end of the series. Griggs did justice to the other two books and wrapped up the Murphy sisters' saga with a perfect blend of humour and conflict...and romance, of course! There's a sweet spiritual thread woven through it all as well. An ideal book for readers who enjoy a dash of Irish with their romance.

The Deposit Slip

GIVEAWAY!!!!

JOHNSON, TODD M.
THE DEPOSIT SLIP

$10,000,000 Is Missing.

Erin Larson is running out of options. In the wake of her father's death, she found a slim piece of paper--a deposit slip--with an unbelievable amount on it. Only the bank claims they have no record of the money, and trying to hire a lawyer has brought only intimidation and threats. Erin's last chance is Jared Neaton.

How Far Will One Lawyer Go to Find the Money?

When Jared wearied of the shady ethics of his big law firm and started his own, he never expected the wheels to fly off so quickly. One big loss has pushed him to the brink, and it's all he can do to scrape by.

And How Far Will Someone Go to Stop Him?

He's not sure if Erin's case is worth the risk, but if the money is real, all his problems could vanish. When digging deeper unleashes something far more dangerous than just threats, both Jared and Erin must decide the cost they're willing to pay to discover the truth.

My Review:

A young Perry Mason or Ben Matlock came to mind as I read The Deposit Slip. It has the same intrinsic legal details (though they don't overpower the story so are easy for a layperson like myself to understand) and Johnson really knows how to build dramatic tension as he slowly reveals clues as the case progresses. In fact by mid-point in my read I'd reached that familiar 'really-good-suspense-phenomena' that has me alternately wanting to skip ahead to find out what happens, throw the book across the room because the bad guys are soooooooo nefarious or just give up reading altogether and make up my own ending. LOL. Honestly, my heart was just racing at the end.

Johnson's thirty years as an attorney brings the courtroom battle to life in a way no amount of lay research could. Drawing on that knowledge he has created a compelling debut novel with enough twists and turns to keep his readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

Dream : Discovering God's Purpose For Your Life

SHEETS, DUTCH
DREAM : DISCOVERING GOD'S PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE

What happened to us? Why are so many people let down by life? We once had dreams -- important dreams that gave us purpose -- but somehow we got off track.

It's certainly not what God wants for us. Our Designer dreamed unique dreams for each of us before we were even born. He skillfully wove them into our DNA, along with the gifts and abilities to achieve those dreams. But here we are, chasing earthly applause when we could be experiencing heaven's approval.

If you want confidence in knowing God's will, if you want each day to count, journey with Dutch Sheets as he presents soul-stirring lessons from the bible and godly dreamers of today. When you hear God's call on your life, you will never be the same.

My Review:

I love the concept of a God who dreams. It's so obvious and yet not something I have ever really considered before. And He has dreams for me! The challenge is to mesh my dreams with my Heavenly Father's. How easy it is to get side-tracked by discouragement, frustration or even the lure of popularity. It's hard to go against mainstream culture and yet, as Christians we are faced with that reality more and more in this madly changing world. We need to draw close to the Lord with as much fervor as the world rushes away from Him.

This book is a great resource to help readers draw closer to their dreams while honoring their God. Sheets provides insightful thoughts on biblical truths. His fresh perspective filled me with a new enthusiasm for living the life God is leading me to. If you are looking for encouragement to recapture your dreams, look no further. This is the book for you!
