My Review:

If romantic suspense was an art form, Lisa Carter would be one of the Masters. There's just as much suspense in the romance as there is in...well...the suspense. This author knows how to weave a story rich in characterization and plot development. I hung on every single word. And I love the way she teased me with tidbits of information, allowing time for me to come to my own conclusions. Then when that particular plot thread was fully revealed I could cheer with giddy delight because I got it right or sit there slack-jawed, astounded that I could be so wrong.

A solid inspirational thread anchors both the romance and the suspense. Ageless truths so hard to understand and personally apply. I grew and stretched right along with Laura. The triumph of love and friendship along with the complication of  messy relationships and way too many hidden lies make this a riveting read that was impossible to put down.  A definite must read for the discerning romantic suspense lover.

My Review:

A lovely read that is pure romance from beginning to end. That doesn't mean it's easy. In fact, this love story is angst-riddled. But it is a tale that focuses on love. Elam's is unrequited, Emily's is misplaced and Luke has taken it for granted. So many scenes made me squirm as my romance loving heart agonized over how they'd work things out. I was held captive even though I got to a point where I just didn't want to read any more because I could clearly see how devastating it was going to get before things finally turned around. Talk about nail-biting and tummy-churning! Of course, I loved every minute of it, and magnanimously forgave the author any discomfort once I reached the end. :-)

Side note: Not sure what I think about this cover. Emily looks more like a pioneer girl than an Amish one. Funny how book cover first impressions affect me. I actually hesitated reading Courting Emily because that image didn't jive with what I have come to expect from an Amish heroine (speaking to the prayer kapp in particular.) Anyway, just goes to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover because this is a story I wouldn't wanted to have missed out on.

My Review:

I don't read many biographies but this one caught my interest, perhaps because I am going through my own health issues at the moment. To say Helo's story is inspirational would be an understatement. She has managed to find hope where most would see only despair. She portrays a powerful testimony of an ever present God and the sheer joy and blessings that come from placing our tentative trust in him. A truly moving account of one woman's incredible journey.

My Review:

The first scene in this book will make you sit up and take notice. It is also a cringeworthy and humourous first meet for Nicole and Quinn. Made me want to dive right in and see what else Kirst had in store. And that would be a whole lot of fun and mayhem. Like tantalizing romance that is more off than on except in the minds of both hero and heroine. An infuriating pair who are so fixated on making their dreams come true they almost miss making their dreams come true together

I'm afraid I fell for Quinn rather hard. He's easy going, mischievous and when he teases Nicole...be still my heart. Sadly, Nicole is too uptight to appreciate his appeal, which makes it more fun for him to tease. But blended in with all that humour are a few nefarious subplots that had me fuming. In short -- a great mix that makes a captivating read.

Reader's Choice -- Any Genre

I have to admit that this post wasn't in the plans for today. I was supposed to review A Thing of Beauty by Lisa Samson. Normally I read at least a week ahead of my reviews so that if I find something questionable or I'm just not into a certain book, I'm not committed to review it. I just move on to another title from my TBR pile. However, time got away from me, and this week I'm reading and reviewing by the seat of my pants. So, I included A Thing of Beauty in my Next Week lineup posted in Sunday's blog. However, I can't in good conscience review this book or offer it as a giveaway. Here's why:

Before reading further, please note these are my personal feelings and I do realize that other readers might have different opinions. And that's fine...but I still have to be true to myself and my personal standards. So, why am I not reviewing A Thing of Beauty?

Questionable language. Which is surprising since it is published by Thomas Nelson and the author has even won a Christy Award for another book. Lisa Samson is a new-to-me author but I felt confidant, given those credentials, that this book would be a good fit for me. I was wrong.

The use of a crude (though not swearing) word a couple of times in the first few pages put my guard up. I got that the heroine was flawed and wounded and the author was bringing me into her gritty world. Fine, point made, let's get on to the story. But then I stumbled upon a different questionable word and began to have second thoughts about continuing. When I came upon blasphemy I closed the book. Fast. Fumed a bit. Picked it up again and skimmed through the rest of the book. In just a few seconds of flipping the pages, my eyes landed on more questionable words, including a terribly crude and vulgar phrase.

Disappointment doesn't begin to describe how I feel. Betrayed might be a better term. This might be the redemption story to end all redemption stories, but I just can't read it. Does that make me shallow? Narrow-minded? Naïve? I don't think so.

For me it comes down to Philippians 4:8 : Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

I may be in the world, but I'm striving not to be of it.

My Review:

Who doesn't love a princess in peril plot line? And when she's in continuous danger it just ups the ante, as far as I'm concerned. Enter Ronin, formerly of the Royal Guard, determined to protect the hapless princess from an increasing threat...oh, wait...scratch that hapless part. This princess is anything but. She's resourceful, assertive and capable and she'll do her own rescuing, thank you very much. Ronin has no idea how much trouble one princess-in-hiding can be...Trouble with a capital T. An engaging read that held me captive until the very last page.

My Review:

How can you not love a story riddled with descriptors like this: "He bristled at the intrusion into his personal space, but their difference in height made it seem as though he was being stalked by a kitten." (p.12) Brings a chuckle in the midst of all that building tension. A really gripping premise develops into a page-turning reading experience as the suspense...and romance...grow more intriguing. And being trapped on a stranded ship with a killer adds an extra thrill. A complicated and edgy plot with plenty of detailed action scenes kept me on the edge of my seat. And so did identifying the villain before Shaun and Lexie! Another intrepid literary duo who refused to heed my warnings!

My Review:

Kind of quirky, sometimes funny and deeply moving. Jacob and Abigail's love story starts out slow and is burdened by plenty of dire situations that keep getting in their way. But that's okay, because they both have some things to work out so that when the right time finally comes they'll have grown enough to realize it.

I enjoyed the town and it's crazy inhabitants -- especially the Valentine Volunteers, even if their antiquated ideas made my blood boil. This story pulled my emotions every which way. From exasperation to frustration to swooning delight. But beware single readers -- there's a lot of 'woe is me, I'm not married' and 'woe is you, you're not married' stuff at the beginning. No worries, just go with the flow and you'll soon be just as enamoured with this story as I was.

My Review:

Published in 2011 and part of the Pleasant Valley series. This one is Book Five but you (thankfully) don't need to read them in order, though I imagine certain character overlap will be more rewarding for readers who have.

Love all the minute details of Amish life that Perry puts into her stories. Text is peppered with Pennsylvania Dutch words easy to understand in context, but she also includes a glossary of words and phrases as well as some mouth-watering Amish recipes at the end of the book. Definitely a read to tease all the senses!

It wasn't long before I became totally engrossed in this character-driven story. Both Katie and Caleb are independent people with a clear view of what the future holds for them...and that's not each other! Their relationship begins with barely suppressed animosity on Caleb's part that makes their eventual wary friendship hard won. But the possibility of 'like' turning into 'love'? Not possible...at least that's what they both tell themselves. Meanwhile their hearts are following along an entirely different path. Such rich romantic development! Thrilled me to my toes.

But there's enough angst to keep a reader on edge too, between a malicious bit of gossip traveling along the Amish grapevine and the sometimes complicated interactions between Amish and Englisch. Lots of fodder for turmoil and Perry doesn't spare her characters (or her readers) until the very end. I'll definitely be catching up on the rest of the Pleasant Valley series so stay tuned.

My Review:

A unique book among the many parenting themed ones out there. I love the perspective twist -- the idea that those same questions (sometimes asked in exasperation) that we ask our kids can be applied to our own faith journey. Divided into sixty-eight short chapters -- each dealing with a 'mom' saying like Follow the Directions, Life isn't fair, Don't panic, and the all too unpopular, No. The author shares a brief personal story to set the scene, flips it so it applies to a faith principal and then follows up with a few reflective questions called A Moment for Introspection at the end. Pretty impactful stuff and would be great to use as a devotional. And though the target audience is parents, I think it holds a universal appeal.

My Review:

I'm a fan of Lisa Carter's romantic suspense novels so I was eager to read her debut Love Inspired book. If I had to sum it up in one word I'd have to go with...awesome! Carter creates vivid images of a captivating seaside town and the salt-of-the-earth characters who live there. I swear an occasional spray of salt water misted up off the page a time or two. Love becoming so immersed in a setting.

Amelia is an intriguing (and frustrating) heroine. I've never met one with such a huge chip on her shoulder -- more like a boulder, actually. It's there for a reason as she's lived through a number of tragedies but sometimes I just wanted slap her upside the head and tell her to give poor Braeden a chance. Mind you he has a few stubborn characteristics too. If you like a good dose of grit mixed in with your romance, liberally peppered with laughter and laced with toe-curling moments, then Coast Guard Courtship is the book for you.

My Review:

The second book in A Healing Grace series and, while you could read this one as a standalone, there are some plot threads that will make more sense if you've read the first book, Herb of Grace. Like the gnashing-of-teeth and stomping-of-feet  romantic thread...and that's all I'm sayin' 'bout that...except I'm yearning for book three in the worst way now.

Sarah is back working with her healing herbs. She's getting more comfortable being a Dokterfraa -- maybe too comfortable as she presses for what she feels is best for her patients...and her friends. There's lots of Amish community shenanigans to keep things hopping and a troubled Englisch boy to make things even more interesting. And then there's this not to be spoken of connection between Sarah and Henry. Impossible. Improbable. Insert a heartbreaking sob here.

Like most continuous type series, this middle book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. We still need to rally around the Yoder family and light a fire under Henry and hopefully smooth out poor neighbour Priscilla's love life (unless she gets her own book later on.) Not to mention sister-in-law Amanda. Sarah's on the look out for the perfect suitor. I am definitely looking forward to more of this heroine's well-intentioned meddling and the complications that will ensue when book three, Balm of Gilead comes out this summer.

My Review:

One of the most thrilling opening scenes I've read in a Love Inspired Suspense! Lynn pulled me right into the turmoil and I felt an immediate connection with the heroine. She's survived four years in prison for a crime she didn't commit and, upon her release, the worst should have been behind her. Not so much. Scary stalking scenarios, the harsh judgements of the community and fighting off assailants is fast becoming the same old same old.  Jace and Mel are thrown together in a wicked game of cat and mouse with plenty of twists and turns and enough surprises to keep me guessing until the very end. Awesome debut novel!

My Review:

How can you not love a book that has exquisite lines like: "With a smile, Daisy pulled Corina into a hug. And for a fleeting second, Corina cradled her cheek on her friend's shoulder and left a piece of her burden there." Honestly, Hauck's eloquence takes my breath away. Her words speak directly to my heart and I find myself emotionally invested in the lives of the characters she brings to life. There's just no way I could have stopped reading. And when the end came, I didn't want it to be over.

How to Catch a Prince is clever and witty and heartrending. A tumultuous mix that had me alternately laughing and crying and shouting scathing comments at ne'er-do-well characters that had no business giving Corina such a hard time. Not to mention swooning over some lovely romantical bits too. And yet it also has an ethereal, fairy tale quality with enough inspiration to touch my soul. That astounding combination equals sheer reading delight.

This is the first novel I have read by Rachel Hauck and I'm left wondering what took me so long!
