Crash Landing

GIVEAWAY

AVELLA, BECKY
CRASH LANDING

Rancher under fire

When rancher Sean Loomis hires a pilot to help him track a runaway horse on his land, what they find almost gets them killed. Someone has set up an illegal drug smuggling operation on a remote section of Sean's ranch. With their plane shot down and armed thugs who can't leave witnesses hunting them, Sean and brave pilot Deanna Jackson must work together to survive. They narrowly escape but discover they can't trust anyone -- including law enforcement. With wildfires raging through the area, cutting off communication with the outside world, Sean and Deanna are on their own. Now, to stay alive, they must outwit criminals desperate to see them crash and burn.

My Review:

He's a methodical planner. She impulsively acts on instinct. Both strategies have merit -- the trick is in knowing which tactic is right for what situation. That's a battle Sean and Deanna reenact over and over againd as they face impossible odds. If the drug smugglers don't do them in, the raging wildfires will. Heart-stopping action punctuated by the sweet stirrings of romance make this the kind of read you'll want to devour in one sitting.

A Note Yet Unsung

GIVEAWAY

ALEXANDER, TAMERA
A NOTE YET UNSUNG

A master violinist trained in Vienna, Rebekah Carrington manages to wheedle her way into an audition with the maestro at the newly formed Nashville Philharmonic. But women are 'far too fragile and frail' for the rigors of an orchestra, and Rebekah's hopes are swiftly dashed because the conductor -- determined to leave his mark on the world of classical music -- bows to public opinion. To make matters worse, Adelicia Acklen Cheatham, mistress of Belmont Mansion and Rebekah's new employer, agrees with him.

Nationally acclaimed conductor Nathaniel Tate Whitcomb is Nashville's new orchestra leader. And despite a reluctant muse -- and a strange buzzing and recurring pain in his head -- he must finish composing his symphony before the grand opening of the city's new opera hall. But far more pressing, he must finish it for the one who first inspired his love of music -- his father, who is dying. As Tate's ailment worsens, he believes Rebekah can help him finish his symphony. But how do you win back a woman's trust when you've robbed her of her dream?

As music moves us to tears yet makes our hearts soar, A Note Yet Unsung captures the splendor of classical music at a time when women's hard-won strides in cultural issues changed not only world history -- but the hearts of men.

My Review:

Stunningly beautiful. Alexander's words washed over me and soaked into the very fiber of my being. This story is illusive and magical and all-consuming. I couldn't stop reading but I wanted to put on the brakes because I dreaded it being over too soon.

Rich in character and setting and delicious details that make the plot zing. I loved it all -- Tate's family, Rebekah's connection with her grandmother, her villainous step-father and ineffectual mother. Sweet Opal and repugnant Darrow Fulton. The solid threads of faith and family that jar with the cutthroat life in the orchestra world.

This story left me breathless. I'm still enthralled, replaying favourite scenes, rewriting other ones and allowing my imagination free reign on a happily-ever-after expansion.

Tate is a hero I needed to warm up to. I love the way the author slowly reveals intriguing tidbits from his past. Suddenly I was seeing Tate in a whole new light. There's unexpected depth in the taciturn, ambitious, often autocratic maestro! And though it took some time, when I fell for him, I fell hard!

Much like Rebekah. A brilliant, passionate musician who can't follow her destiny because of the ridiculous rules of 'proper' society. Women too delicate and fragile for the rigors of playing in an orchestra! Pshaw! Loved the historical details -- even when they infuriated me.

And I also love the unabashed way Tamera Alexander weaves faith and God into the heart of her story. Uplifting and unforgettable. Definitely one for the keeper shelf!

If I'm Found

GIVEAWAY

BLACKSTOCK, TERRI
IF I'M FOUND

Is Dylan hunting Casey to prosecute her or protect her?

Casey Cox is still on the run, fleeing prosecution for a murder she didn't commit, Dylan Roberts -- her most relentless pursuer -- is still on her trail, but his secret emails insist he knows the truth and wants to help her. He's let her escape before when had her in his grasp, but trust doesn't come easily.

As Casey works to collect evidence about the real muderers, she stumbles on another unbeatable injustice: an abused child and a suicidal man who's also been falsely accused. Casey risks her own safety to right this wrong and protect the little girl from her tormentors. But doing so is risky and may result in her capture -- and if she's captured, she has no doubt she'll be murdered before ever steps foot in a jail cell.

In this riveting sequel to the USA Today bestseller If I Run, evil lurks, drawing Casey out of the shadows...but there is light shining in the darkness.

My Review:

As compulsive a read as the first book and you absolutely must read If I Run before starting in on this one!

"The police lights in my rearview mirror almost destroy me." (p.1) And so it begins -- another cat-and-mouse pursuit that will leave you breathless. Casey has been wrongly accused of murder and she's running for her life. The real killer wants to silence her but she's smart enough to keep a step ahead of her pursuers...so far. A premise that was inspired by the movie Fugitive starring Harrison Ford so if you're a fan you will absolutely love this series.

The intensity is staggering. Heart-pounding, teeth-clenching kind of stuff that nearly turned me into a speed reader. My white-knuckled grip on the book has put some permanent creases on the cover! :-(

There's Casey -- frantically on the run while trying to figure out a way to catch the killer at his own game. She can't do it alone. Luckily Dylan has come to believe in her innocence and wants to help. But can she trust him? Because she's not the only one at risk -- her whole family is in the crosshairs as her pursuers get more desperate.

As in book one, there's a compelling sub-plot full of  danger and mystery that adds an even sharper edge to this already gripping novel. And Blackstock has infused the story with a powerful faith thread that shines a light of hope during the darkest times.

And be forewarned -- If I'm Found definitely has a cliffhanger ending though there's enough closure between the subplot suspense and Dylan and Casey's relationship that I am content to wait another year to get full resolution. Well, maybe content, is not the right word since I have the strangest urge to start marking down the days until If I Live releases...March 2018!!!!

Black Sands

GIVEAWAY

COBLE, COLLEEN
BLACK SANDS

Even a tropical paradise can have fire surging beneath.
Even a loving family can break each other's hearts.
Even an unforgivable act can be redeemed by love.

Volcanologist Annie Tagma loves her family with a fierceness that lights up her quiet exterior. But unseen forces seem to be tearing the family apart with the fury of the hot lava that seethes beneath their Hawaiian home. And the only person she can turn to for help is the man she blames for all the trouble.

Mano Oana can't get past the guilt of what happened to his best friend on that devastating day in Iran. He's even taken leave from the Navy to make amends to the Tagma family and help them out of trouble for which he's partly responsible. But how can he get them to trust him when he can't even trust himself?

Like Distant Echoes, the first book in Colleen Coble's popular Aloha Reef series, this page-turning story combines mystery and suspense with tender romance in an irresistible island setting.

My Review

An intense and riveting page-turner. Complicated family dynamics paired with a difficult romance kept me reeling -- never mind the twisty turny plot and parade of intriguing characters that might -- or might not -- be motivated by evil intent. This is Colleen Coble at her gnarliest. :-) Throw away your armchair sleuth manual and just sit back and enjoy the tumultuous ride!

This is book 2 in the Aloha Reef series but it reads fine as a standalone. Though if you have read the first book you'll be happy to reacquaint yourself with some familiar faces in this one.

Special Agent

GIVEAWAY

HANSEN, VALERIE
SPECIAL AGENT

Suspicion of Guilt

When Special Agent in Charge Max West and his K-9 partner, Opal, look into a series of bombings in Northern California, horse trainer Katerina Garwood instantly seems suspicious. As the ex-fiancé of a man tied to the criminal Dupree family, Katerina may know more than she's letting on -- especially since the infamous syndicate is targeting her. And Max isn't sure he can believe her when she says she knows nothing. Despite his reservations, though, he can't deny his attraction...or the impulse  to protect her. And with the criminals closing in, Max must separate the truth from lies, or he and Katerina may not live to share tomorrow...

Classified K-9 Unit: These lawmen solve the toughest cases with the help of their brave canine partners.

My Review:

What a great continuity series! I get so excited to see a new book coming out each month. I love looking for clues relating to the over-arcing suspense that will carry through all six books (this is Book Three) but I also enjoy the fact that each book reads very well as a standalone. Special Agent brings both romantic and suspense resolution for Max and Katerina...and Opal, bless her big ol' drooling heart!

So, aside from being enamored with the beautiful boxer on the cover, I think her partner is pretty droolworthy (doggy pun intended!) as well. Max is intense and single-minded when it comes to crime solving which puts up barriers where Katerina is concerned. He doesn't trust her -- or to be more accurate, he doesn't want to trust her but there's something about the spunky heroine that's hard to resist. And that makes Max a tad tetchy. Love me a moody hero with strong protective tendencies.

Katerina's whole world has been turned upside down thanks to her erstwhile ex-fiancé and she's struggling to get on with her life. Which is kind of hard to do with a target on her back. There's plenty of action, a ton of danger and a puzzling mystery to solve. Not to mention the ups and downs of a  romance brewing between this pig-headed couple. Perfect fodder for a page-turner of a story!

Sandpiper Cove

GIVEAWAY

HANNON, IRENE
SANDPIPER COVE

Wishing for things that cannever be is foolish - or is it?

Hope Harbor police chief and single mom Lexie Graham has zero time for extracurricular activities -- including romance. Ex-con Adam Stone isn't looking for love either -- but how ironic is it that the first woman to catch his eye is a police chief? When Lexie enlists Adam's help to keep a troubled young man from heading down the wrong path, sparks begin to fly. Could it be that God may have a different -- and better -- future planned for them than either could imagine? Lauded by Library Journal as "a master at character development," Irene Hannon welcomes you back to this charming Oregon seaside village.

Come home to Hope Harbor -- where hearts heal...and love blooms

My Review:

There is something exceptionally delightful about Irene Hannon's characters. There's so much depth and intrigue in each and every one whether they are the hero and heroine or any number of secondary characters -- including Clyde, the dog!

You can tell a lot about a hero by the way he treats a dog. And Clyde will tell you that Adam is a keeper. Some of my favourite scenes are between this life-battered pair. A man who has had a rough start in life and the abused dog he rescued. Both are wary of getting too close to people, finding comfort and safety in their solitude...until Lexie gets involved.

Love the unusual pairing -- an ex-con and a police chief. It's all kinds of complicated and they are their own worst enemies. Both are wounded by past tragedies and their love story doubles as a beautiful redemption story.

"You know...it's interesting how our paths often smooth out if we give God a chance to pave the way, isn't it?" (p 293)  One of things I love most about Sandpiper Cove is the way the author has seamlessly woven an inspirational thread into the plot. Faith shines through the lives of some pretty memorable characters. Uplifting but never forced, bringing the warmth of hope to the most difficult situations.

A complex romance that sizzles right to the very last page. Stupendous addition to the Hope Harbor series...and, woohoo...Irene Hannon promises there are more books to come.

DAVIDS, PATRICIA
THEIR PRETEND AMISH COURTSHIP

Make-Believe Beau

Fannie Erb isn't looking for a husband -- especially if she has to leave her beloved horses to go find one. What she needs is a way to assure her parents she's not hopeless when it comes to love. Family friend Noah Bowman might just be her solution. A fake relationship will free them both from unwanted matchmaking plans. how could Fannie predict that pretending to date the handsome, teasing boy next door would awaken genuine emotions? By summer's end they'll be free to part, but Fannie's growing feelings are transforming her neighbor into the only man who might ever rein in her adventurous heart.

The Amish Bachelors: These men finally meet their matches

My Review:

Fun and playful -- I'm still grinning. Fannie and Noah have a knack for slinging barbs that's a delight to read. Their banter, that hails back to childhood, is delivered with cutting precision. It's like they never left the schoolroom which complicates a pretend courtship no end. Both driven by their personal goals, they nearly miss the plan God has laid out before them.

Noah has his eye on a professional baseball opportunity; Fanny has every intention of a career in horse training. Their deception is a means to an end but then they get the surprise of their lives. They actually like each other! A sweet romantic comedy with the cutest haflinger ponies you'll ever want to meet.  It doesn't get any better than this!

The Ebb Tide

GIVEAWAY

LEWIS, BEVERLY
THE EBB TIDE

Sallie Riehl has dreamed of traveling at least once before settling down to join church, so she is thrilled at an unexpected summer opportunity to nanny in Cape May for a well-to-do family. However, saying even a temporary good=bye to Paradise Township means forgoing baptism another year, as wellas leaving behind a would-be beau. Yet the weeks in Cape May soon prove unforgettable as Sallie meets a Mennonite young man whose friendship she quickly begins to cherish. Has she been too hasty with her promises, or will she only find what her heart is longing for back home?

My Review:

Trademark Beverly Lewis. She has such a distinctive voice. Reading her novels is like listening to a traditional storyteller. It's easy to slip into the pages of one of her books and lose yourself in the story. And she always writes from such interesting perspectives. And her first lines are always killer hooks. Like this one:

"I was born with wanderlust in my heart."

Not the confession one would anticipate from a young Amish woman. It's that wanderlust that sets Sallie apart. Keeps her from taking baptism classes each summer, Has her working extra hours to save up some travel money. She wants one big adventure before she can settle back into life with the People.

A beautiful coming of age story.that celebrates the wisdom and peace of following God's leading on your life, despite how difficult the journey might be.

The Chapel Car Bride

GIVEAWAY

MILLER, JUDITH
THE CHAPEL CAR BRIDE

After a sheltered life in Pittsburgh, Hope Irvine is ready for a new adventure. When her father takes a position as a preacher in a railroad car converted into a traveling church, she's thrilled at the chance to accompany him. while accommodation in their new chapel car home are tight, Hope couldn't be happier putting her musical skills to good use and ministering to the people of West Virginia alongside her father. But when their chapel car arrives in Finch, West Virginia, they find a coal mining community that has his hard times and is suspicious of outsiders.

Luke Hughes works for the coal mine when he can, but the struggling company doesn't always offer steady work. When Reverend Irvine and Hope arrive in town, Luke is intrigued by what the reverend can teach him -- and by the lovely and kind Hope.

When Hope's desire to bring supplies and Sunday school classes to neighboring counties leads to her traveling with a flirtatious young mine manager. Luke is hard-pressed to suppress his jealousy. But when he begins to suspect the manager's motives are less than charitable, can he prove it without hurting Hope, or worse, putting her in danger?

My Review:

I love discovering unknown-to-me bits of history in the pages of a novel. I mean, seriously, a chapel car ministry? How cool is that? Imagine a train car set up as a chapel with a small section at the back blocked off for living quarters. It's the original tiny house! And the chapel car can be disconnected and left behind to minister to the people in small communities along the railroad line. How did I not hear about this before? Such an awesome backdrop for a historical romance.

And then there's the discontent and wariness of close-knit coal mining towns in West Virginia. Poor wages, dangerous work, unfair treatment by mine managers. It all adds a sense of danger and even some intrigue to the plot.

Hope is eager to prove herself as she accompanies her father on his ministry tour for the first time. She"s not prepared for the abject poverty she encounters, the rough-and-tumble existence in the remote mining towns. But the girl has grit and determination and a love for the Lord that fuels her desire to serve through her music and children's ministry.

Luke is the family breadwinner, providing for his mother and siblings on his limited mining income. He"s as intrigued by the chapel car as I am. :-) A man of faith, it isn"t long before he becomes enmeshed in the Irvine's lives and ministry...with a certain fascination for the preacher's daughter.

A sweet inspirational romance rich in historical details and filled with captivating characters. A joy of a read.
