Danger on the Ranch

GIVEAWAY
MENTINK, DANA
DANGER ON THE RANCH

Her child's life is on the line. A Roughwater Ranch Cowboys story.

After putting his serial killer brother in prison, former US marshal Mitch Whitehorse chooses a solitary country life -- until his brother escapes. Now Mitch's former sister-in-law, Jane Reyes, needs protection...for herself and the toddler she's kept a secret. Mitch still isn't sure of Jane's innocence in his brother's crimes, but to keep his nephew out of a killer's grasp, trusting her is his only option.

My Review:

Wow...much darker subject matter than I'm used to seeing in a Love Inspired Suspense. Mentink does a great job of building up the creep factor without going overboard but it still gave me stalkerish heebie-jeebies. Sometimes a reader needs a good shivery book to cower into. :-) And this one fits the bill!

It starts out really tense. Mitch's...almost repulsion...for Jane oozes off the page. That knee-jerk reaction clashes with his sense of  decency and honor though. Talk about internal conflict! And as much as I felt for him, I grew exasperated with him too. Poor Jane needed a break and Mitch wasn't about to give her one. Of course, I had the benefit of being party to Jane's innermost thoughts so I knew she was innocent. Mitch, on the other hand, had to s-l-o-w-l-y work that out for himself. But when he does -- wow!

Intense action, dark foreshadowing, and a seriously evil villain make Danger on the Ranch a page-turning thriller. And -- woohoo! -- this is the first book in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series and I'm already clamoring for Liam, Chad and Helen's stories (especially Liam's!!!)

Castle on the Rise

GIVEAWAY
CAMBRON, KRISTY
CASTLE ON THE RISE

A storied castle. A band of rebels. And a nation chasing the centuries-old-dream of freedom...What legacy will they leave behind?

When Laine Forrester travels to France to attend her longtime friend's vineyard wedding, she expects to find a bride on the brink of a fairy-tale life. But after a series of unforeseen setbacks -- a devastating diagnosis, a castle restoration put on hold, and the emergence of deep-seated family dynamics that threaten to derail the new couple's fledgling marriage -- it seems the storybook life Laine had imagined for her friend -- and once, for herself -- is suddenly crumbling before her eyes.

With hopes of resurrecting a happy ending for one of them, Laine throws support behind her friend and agrees to accompany the couple to the groom's family home in Ireland, where the merging of a mysterious inheritance, long-buried wounds, and a fractured family set out to spend the trip from the start. It's in the unlikely corners of a historic Dublin pub, and across the wide-open moors bordering Ireland's majestic Wicklow Mountains, that Laine is slowly drawn in by the land and the people, sparking hope for something she never imagined possible: the courage to heal. But with secrets of her own -- and a heart afraid to trust again -- Laine must determine how much she's willing to risk in mending the broken places within herself and whether she believes that even through the depths of our pain, a beautiful story can emerge.

Set in three time-periods -- the revolutionary era of the late eighteenth century, Ireland's turbulent Easter week of the 1916 Rising, and present day -- Castle on the Rise weaves a story of legacy, conviction, and redemption against the backdrop of Dublin's storied streets, and the stretch of Ireland's stunning emerald shores. It raises the question: give the choice between fairy tale or a life of truly anchored faith -- which legacy would you choose?

My Review:

"Ireland has a million stories and if you stay long enough you'll learn them all."

Heartfelt, shivery sigh. Followed by some muffled sobs and inelegant hiccups. I need a moment...or a week...to recover from this splendiferous read.

Heart-breaking. Awe-inspiring. Hope-lifting. Sure and Kristy Cambron must have kissed the blarney stone, her words are that eloquent. And greatly enhanced by the narration of Amy Rubinate. I listened to the audible version of this book and I'm so glad I did. It created an evocative mood that heightened Cambron's storytelling prowess. This is one book I think 'reads' best when you listen.

And the story! Well, stories, really -- three distinct time periods at pivotal points in Irish history. Magical and spellbinding. I had no trouble jumping between centuries and connected with each hero and heroine. Honestly -- each timeline story could easily have been published as a standalone novel...but the way Cambron weaves them together! Impeccable pacing -- and the way she stops one story at a heart-plummeting moment and then picks up with the next...wow -- I'm still experiencing reader whiplash. There were times I had to hit pause and collect myself. Pace madly around my house while wringing my hands and moaning..."no, no, NO!" And then wonder if I'd have the courage to press play again.

Castle on the Rise made me homesick (I'm an Irish born Canadian.) It celebrates the courage and conviction and abiding faith of a complex people. There were so many inspirational passages that I'd have jotted down if I'd been reading a paperback copy. I guess I'll have to buy one for my keeper shelf as well. :-)

An emotional masterpiece that quite literally took my breath away.

Identity: Classified

GIVEAWAY
SHOAF, LIZ
IDENTITY: CLASSIFIED

Uncovering the past may be the only way to survive

After security specialist Chloe Spencer witnesses a murder on her webcam, the killer faces the camera with a threat: return his disc, or she's next. Unsure what he's after, Chloe uses an alias and runs...until she lands in Sheriff Ethan Hoyt's jurisdiction. When the killer finds her, Chloe must stand alone or trust Ethan -- with the secrets of her past, her life...and her heart.

My Review:

So, this doesn't happen often...in fact maybe never...but I had to stop reading and hustle over to my computer to start writing this review because I am over-the-moon-crazy about this kick-butt heroine! She's delightfully unexpected and has succeeded in discombobulating Sheriff Hoyt from their very first meet. "He'd just made a fool of himself and could only chalk it up to the sudden appearance of Dorothy carting Toto around on a motorcycle." (p 14) And little Geordie -- 15 pounds of fierce attack poodle! What a hoot! And these are just my first impressions after reading chapter one!

"Chloe hadn't been around many kids during her adult life, but she did train dogs and knew a thing or two." (p 99) Bwahahaha!!! I LOVE Chloe -- she's tough and scrappy and smart-mouthed. Poor Ethan doesn't know what to make of her. He doesn't trust her but he's not willing to leave her to her own devices and possibly get killed either. And his internal observations are hysterical! Love me some dry wit in the middle of angsty chaos!

Be still my heart -- Geordie!!! He's the true hero of this romantic suspense (sorry, Ethan, rest assured you come in at a close second!) This little canine packs as much 'tude as his mama and brought so much fun to the read!

Honestly -- Identity: Classified is sheer brilliance. In my top ten of fave Love Inspired Suspense novels ever. Really.

The Bishop's Daughter

GIVEAWAY
JOHNS, PATRICIA
THE BISHOP'S DAUGHTER

In this poignant, beautifully written novel, a faithful Amish widow is reunited with her wayward first love...

As a bishop's daughter and good Amish mother, widowed Sadie Hochstetler teachers her young son that God blesses those who try their best to please Him. But her brief marriage taught her that life is infinitely more complicated than that. Older, and serious, her late husband seemed a sensible choice -- especially compared to Elijah Fisher, the spirited boy with whom she butted heads and hearts. Then Elijah abruptly left for the Englisher world, taking Sadie's beloved brother he along with him -- a double betrayal she still strives to forgive. Especially now that Elijah has returned.

Elijah plans to stay in the the Amish community only as long as he's needed, helpinghis family and working for Sadie's ailing father. The outside world has changed him, leading him to question rules and restrictions that others take on faith. Once, he'd been head over heels in love with the bishop's daughter -- a girl he was judged unworthy of courting. Nine years have changed so much between them. Yet something remains -- a spark that, for all their differences, might light the way home again.

My Review:

I had the privilege of reading my first Paticia Johns novel last week (a Love Inspired) and was really impressed by her storytelling style so when this book showed up at my public library I snatched it up and then settled down to devour it in one sitting -- it's that good.

This second chance love story is complex and layered and I loved the way the author explores issues of the Ordnung from multiple angles. Really made for a fascinating -- and emotional -- read.

Sadie has always felt the pressure of being the Bishop's daughter -- it has shaped her into the serious, sensible...dare I say straight-laced?...woman she is now. The exact opposite to Elijah's rebellious spirit. Their differences caused trouble in their youth and his sudden reappearance rocks Sadie's structured world. Sparks fly and toe-curls ensue! The kind of romance that takes a reader on a roller coaster ride straight through to the end.

A beautifully written, thought-provoking read.

Perhaps in doing a job that makes a difference, she can find some sense of purpose and solace in her shattered faith.

My Review:

published in 2010
Thanks to my public library for providing me with an audible version of this book

"A kite is like a man's life," my granddad had said as I weighed the choice between letting that kite soar and holding it down. "No matter how much he tries, he can't make it more than a piece of paper and a ball of twine, on his own. He's got to give it over to something bigger, let the Good Lord breathe into it. After that, he just has to do two things -- turn his eyes toward heaven and keep hold of the string."

Lisa Wingate is a master storyteller and I found myself, once again, completely enthralled in her fiction. Complex characters struggling with true-to-life issues that seem insurmountable at times. Gut-wrenching and inspiring and so very hopeful! I particularly related to Andrea as she tries to find her footing after a messy divorce. My heart was in my throat for much of the read. And all mixed up in Mart and Andrea's complicated love story is the mystery of a vulnerable little girl found in the company of a war-damaged recluse. Spellbinding stuff!

Thanks to my public library for providing me with an audible version of this book.

Simply hilarious! Madcap mayhem, quirky characters you want to hug or strangle (her mother is a riot!) and a menagerie of pets that add to the chaos. This is the first book in the Domestic Diva Mystery series and it is sheer brilliance! And the mystery -- honestly everybody could have been the killer. I had so much fun leaping to conclusions as I tried to keep pace with Sophie's crazy Thanksgiving. Plus that annoying but oh so appealing detective made my toes curl! I'm giddy with delight over this new-to-me series. Can't wait to read more.

The Governess of Penwythe Hall

GIVEAWAY
LADD, SARAH E.
THE GOVERNESS OF PENWYTHE HALL

Cornwall was in her blood, and Delia feared she'd never escape its hold

Cornwall, England 1811

Blamed for her husband's death, Cordelia Greythorne fled Cornwall and accepted a governess position to begin a new life. Years later her employer's unexpected death and his last request for her to watch over his five children force her to reevaluate. She can't abandon the children now that they've lost both parents, but their new guardian lives at the timeworn Penwythe Hall...back on the Cornish coast she's tried desperately to forget.

Jac Twethewey is determined to revive Penwythe Hall's once-flourishing apple orchards, and he'll stop at nothing to see his struggling estate profitable again. He hasn't heard from his brother in years, so when his nieces, nephews, and their governess arrive unannounced, he battles both grief at his brother's death and bewilderment over the sudden responsibility. Jac's priorities shift as the children take up residence in the ancient halls, but their secretive governess -- and the mystery shrouding her past -- proves to be a distraction to his carefully laid plans.

Rich with family secrets, lingering danger, and the captivating allure of new love, this first book in the Cornwall series introduces us to the Twetheway family and their search for peace, justice, and love on the Cornish coast.

My Review:

Sqqqqquuuuueeeeeee!!!! THUD. I'm bruised from head to toe from all the body slams onto my fainting couch (I'm an energetic swooner when it comes to Gothic + Regency.) And...oh my...I'm still reeling in a kaleidoscopic state of tizziness after finishing this sublime read. It took me back to my early teens when I discovered a treasure trove of Victoria Holt and Phyllis A. Whitney books at my public library. I got that same thrill of anticipation as I started to read Governess of Penwythe Hall. I mean -- Cornish coast -- a struggling ancestral home -- a reticent hero -- smugglers -- danger! I feel a surge of fangirling excitement welling up inside of me just remembering it all!

"If you lean on your faith, you'll arrive at a destination created just for you."

And what a journey Ladd takes Jac and Delia on! Enticing descriptions and a mysterious ambiance lulled me into a stupor of bibliophile bliss. A romance that manages to be both sweet and passionate, the specter of danger, a shroud of mystery and cutthroat action -- all the elements essential for this genre with the added bonus of a gentle faith thread woven throughout. Sweet Perfection! And....

Sqqqquuuuueeeeeaaallllll!!!! It's the first book in the Cornwall series so start counting down the days until The Thief of Lanwyn Manor releases in January 2020!

The Texan's Secret Daughter

GIVEAWAY
NAVARRO, JOLENE
THE TEXAN'S SECRET DAUGHTER

Can this rancher make up for his past? A Cowboys of Diamondback Ranch romance

Turning his life around was the hardest ting Elijah De La Rosa ever had to do -- until his ex-wife, Jazmine Daniels, returns with their young daughter he didn't know existed. Now this successful rancher will do anything to be a good father. But can he forgive himself for the past...and turn their second chance into a family for always?

My Review:

I was in emotional overdrive the entire read. All. The. Way. Through. My heart did so many calisthenics it hurts!

I'm usually not a fan of the secret baby/child trope -- in fact I'm likely to NOT read this kind of book but...it's Jolene Navarro and the very first book I read by her was also about a secret baby and she totally won me over with that one so I dived into The Texan's Secret Daughter with a healthy dose of anticipatory dread. :-)

Cue a chronic case of the collywobbles because...Elijah!...Jazmine! Oy, all the what if's and could have beens and....whimper. Have copious amounts of chocolate and a box of kleenex handy for this read!

Amish Haven

LYNN, DANA R.
AMISH HAVEN

A refuge for his family -- an Amish Witness Protection story

When criminal lawyer Tyler Everson witnesses his boss's murder, he becomes the killer's next target -- along with his estranged wife, Annabelle, and their daughter. Now they must enter witness protection in Amish country. But reuniting with his family isn't easy when Annabelle doesn't trust him. Will going into hiding keep them safe...and bring the family back together for good?

My Review:

What an interesting twist to the romance in this Love Inspired Suspense. An estranged married couple -- talk about raising the angst factor. Especially since there's a little girl involved who hasn't seen her daddy in years! I thought I'd be really put off by Tyler but I found myself empathizing with him more than Annabelle!

The suspense plot is fast and furious, though the Amish angle doesn't come into play until almost the halfway mark. This is the last book in The Amish Witness Protection series and Lynn does a great job of bringing closure to readers as we get a glimpse at the 'ever afters' of Jonathan and Celeste and Julia and Abraham from the first two books. Happy sigh from someone who has a hard time letting fictional characters go! :-)

Thanks to my public library for providing me with an audio copy of these novellas.

Silent Night --Christmas in May you say? Absolutely -- if it's Colleen Coble! And especially if one of my favourite fictional canines shows up and plays hero. And there's something spectacular about a snowy winter in the North Woods! Her Twins' Cowboy Dad

GIVEAWAY
JOHNS, PATRICIA
HER TWINS' COWBOY DAD

A cowboy committed to bachlerhood...until these little Montana Twins change everything.

Thanks to his dysfunctional family, cowboy-to-the-bone Colt Hardin insists marriage and fatherhood aren't for him. But then his uncle dies, leaving Colt the ranch he's always wanted -- and the herd to his late cousin's mischievous twin toddlers. Now Colt must find a solution wit their pretty mother, Jane Marshall. Can these little cherubs show Jane and Colt what a family can truly be?

My Review:

"We're no Norman Rockwell family ideal out here. We are just regular people. Some of us are hurt. Personally, I'm a little messed up. We're trying really hard to overcome a whole lot of hurdles. We're a family, but are not always good at being one, either." (p 55-56)

That cuteness overload cover delivers exactly what it promises. Swooning over Colt Hardin is a given -- especially when he's wrangling twins! He's all tough "cowboy-to-the-bone" -- a confirmed bachelor who intends to stay that away thanks to his bitter views on marriage. Watching him work through his angst was both heartbreaking and uplifting. Jane and her twins are the catalyst that hurl him along an emotional journey towards wholeness. Loved the give and take between these two. They develop a bond of friendship that threatens to deepen into something neither of them is looking for. Thankfully, the author had other plans and included enough toe-curling scenes to delight this hopelessly romantic reader. Awesomesauce from start to finish!

BLIND TRUST

A puppy stolen, a woman in jeopardy...the next exciting True Blue K-9 Unit story

When guide dog trainer Eva Kendall stumbles on a dognapping someone sets their deadly sights on her. Now she'll do anything to find her guide-dog-in-training -- except admit her most painful secret to K-9 officer Finn Gallagher. But can Finn and his K-9 partner help her track down the puppy...and uncover the criminal's true motives before attacks on Eva turn fatal?

My Review:

Isn't that a great cover? See the little chocolate lab sheltered below the fearless K-9?! That just melts my socks off! Love, love, love this continuity series! This is the third book but easily reads well as a standalone. Love that it's these special dogs and their individual talents that link the books in this series. Of course, the handlers are pretty cool too. :-) Like debonaire Finn Gallagher who has a bit of a reputation as a ladies' man. Eva isn't interested though (ha!) she has enough going on in her life including a secret she's very reluctant to share with Finn. Cue the tension and angst and the trauma of dognapping (gasp!) Mystery and suspense collide with the sweet stirrings of new love and that results in another stellar addition to the True Blue K-9 Unit series!

The Wish

GIVEAWAY
DAVIDS, PATRICIA
THE WISH

Second chances come at the most unexpected times...

Widow Laura Beth Yoder longs for a family of her own. So much so that she's preparing to leave the sleepy Amish town she calls home to find love. But a terrible storm washes out the creek, forcing her to wade in and save the life of an Englisch man and his adorable infant son. As they recover at the farm, the baby brings sunshine and joy, while the handsome outsider is filled with shadows...and secrets.

Joshua King owes his life and his son's to Laura Beth. Still, lingering at her farm is out of the question. He must fulfill a promise he made to his estranged wife on her deathbed to deliver their son to his Amish in-laws. With his dark past, Joshua has no other choice. But his plans never took this sweet and surprising Amish widow into account. She just might be his second chance at happiness...and love.

My Review:

There's something magical about a Patricia Davids story and I'm over-the-moon excited about this new series -- The Amish of Cedar Grove. I'm already in love with this community. Love the unusual setting for an Amish romance and found the differences in this Kansas settlement really interesting (the author provides a 'dear reader' note at the start of the novel explaining unique aspects of the Kansas Amish.)

I fell hard for Joshua even though he made my heart hurt and frayed every last nerve! He's closed-off, grumpy, wary, angst-riddled...prickly as a porcupine at times. But none of that can totally mask the kind, caring, gentle man buried deep inside. Laura Beth sees past the hurt to all that tenderness yearning to surface. And if anyone can turn Joshua's life around it's this determined (aka bossy) Amish widow who has tender yearnings of her own. Davids expertly weaves their love story into the day to day workings of this close Amish community. A beautifully paced, stirring romance that celebrates faith and family and the hope in second chances.

The Christie Curse

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
ABBOTT, VICTORIA
THE CHRISTIE CURSE

In 1926, Agatha Christie disappeared -- making headlines across the world -- only to show up eleven days later at a spa under an assumed name. During those eleven days, did she have time to write a play?

Jordan Bingham needs a new job and a new place to live. She's back in Harrison Falls, New York, living with her not-so-law-abiding uncles, in debt thanks to a credit card-stealing ex and pending grad school loans.

Enter the perfect job, a research position that includes room and board, which will allow her to spend her days hunting down rare mysteries for an avid book collector. There's just one problem: her employer, Vera Van Alst -- the most hated citizen of Harrison Falls.

Jordan's first assignment is to track down a rumored Agatha Christie play. It seems easy enough, but Jordan soon finds out that her predecessor was killed while looking for it, and there is still someone out there willing to murder to keep the play out of Vera's hands. Jordan's new job is good -- but is it worth her life?

My Review:

published in 2013
Thanks to my public library for providing me with an audible version of this book

Brilliant! Everything that is good about a cozy and then some. Excellent pacing, captivating characters, some eccentric critters and a plucky heroine who uses her brain! Love, love, love that she comes from a not-so-law-abiding family. Her uncles are hysterical and her connections with the 'underworld' offer her some unique opportunities. Abbott kept me in a flummoxed state for most of the read. I just couldn't figure the mystery out. I'd get all excited about my brilliant armchair sleuthing only to have my 'logic' dashed, leaving me scrambling for another theory. I didn't solve it all...though I did get one connecting piece which I worked hard for! lol Such a fun read. The first in the Book Collector Mystery series and I already have book 2 on hold -- another audio format. The narration is as brilliant as the storytelling!

Please note: this is not a Christian Fiction selection but it is a clean read -- just two mild expletives. :-)
