A Simple Christmas Wish

GIVEAWAY

CARLSON, MELODY
A SIMPLE CHRISTMAS WISH

Rachel Milligan is caring for her seven-year-old niece, Holly, at her home in Chicago when she receives devastating news: Holly's parents have been killed in a plane crash. Because Rachel is Holly's only known relative, she assumes that she will be her beloved niece's guardian. However, custody is awarded to Lydia, a distant aunt who happens to be Amish. Just a week before Christmas, Rachel takes Holly to the Amish community in the hopes of persuading Aunt Lydia to relinquish custody. Instead, Lydia sets out to teach Holly to live according to the Amish way. As family secrets emerge and old wounds are healed, Rachel realizes that she will do whatever it takes to ensure that Holly has the loving family she needs.

Combining an Amish family saga with the anticipation of Christmas cheer and the promise of a budding romance, this newest Christmas story from beloved author Melody Carlson is sure to please.

My Review:

Getting a new Melody Carlson Christmas book is becoming a tradition for me. I love the way she delivers holiday magic that never fails to touch my heart. A Simple Christmas Wish is just such a story. And it has all the earmarks of a another classic seasonal tale that you won't mind reading year after year. Of course I'm thrilled that we head into Amish country for this one.

Rachel and Holly make an endearing duo with a dilemma that left this gentle reader indignant and defensive. Emotions definitely engaged, I devoured the story in an afternoon because I just couldn't bear to stop without my happily ever after.  It even brought me to tears. Sniffle. There is something to be said for a good sad/happy Christmas cry to start off the season.

An engaging tale that will lift your spirits (after you've been put through the wringer first.)

Severed Trust

GIVEAWAY

DALEY, MARGARET
SEVERED TRUST

The day Sadie Thompson finds her high school student, Lexie, asleep in class and can't wake her is the day she realizes how entrenched a prescription drug ring is in her school. As Sadie is pulled into doing something about the growing problem, she becomes involved with Ethan Stone—a Texas Ranger who suspects the drug ring reaches far beyond the high school. Helping Lexie recover from the overdose, Sadie feels she is making a difference—until the 16-year-old's best friend dies from the apparent mixing of various prescription drugs. Lexie doesn't think her friend took her own life, but her relationship with her Uncle Ethan is precarious and she doesn’t know if either he or Sadie will help her discover the truth.

My Review:

Gut-wrenching story about an issue that is all too prevalent in our current society. Kudos to the author for bringing it to light with hard-hitting compassion.

Told from multiple points of view, this read kept me on the edge of my seat as I tried to piece together the clues. Proud to say I was half right -- but I succumbed to a number of Daley's wily red herrings first. Love it when a suspense author can keep me on my toes like that. :-)

Another stellar addition to The Men of the Texas Rangers series -- may it go on forever!

Unspoken

GIVEAWAY

HENDERSON, DEE
UNSPOKEN

Charlotte Graham is at the center of the most famous kidnapping in Chicago history.

The task force of FBI and local cops found her two abductors, killed them, rescued her, but it took four very long years. The fact she was found less than three miles from her home, had been there the entire time, haunts them. She's changed her identity, found a profession she loves, and rebuilt her life.

She's never said a word--to the cops, to her doctors, to family--about those four years.
A family legacy has brought her back to Chicago where a reporter is writing a book about the kidnapping. The cops who worked the case are cooperating with him. Her options are limited: Hope the reporter doesn't find the full truth, or break her silence about what happened. And her silence is what has protected her family for years.

Bryce Bishop doesn't know her past, he only knows she has coins to sell from her grandfather's estate--and that the FBI director for the Chicago office made the introduction. The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy. She's not giving him much of an opening to work with.

Charlotte wants to trust him. She needs to tell him what happened. Because a crime cops thought was solved, has only opened another chapter...

My Review:

A stunning, complex novel that lingers with me still.

First, a gentle warning to Henderson fans: This is not the O'Malleys. And that's totally okay. Fine actually. But I have read some reviews that expressed disappointment over the different tone in this book and I just think readers shouldn't dive into Unspoken with any false assumptions.

Henderson's trademark complexity and deep characterization will tantalize readers from the get go. I love the way she develops a romance in slow, measured steps -- friendship first until the connection grows in depth and breadth.  This is very much the case in Unspoken as, unlike most suspense novels, the time line covers more than a year.

Layers of suspense are expertly entwined within this complex story -- two cold cases vie for supremacy over Charlotte's secrets. The unraveling of her mystery is achingly slow and kept me anxiously turning pages. Henderson is an expert at pacing and doesn't hurry through a single scene in this 400+ page novel and that is fine by me.

In a unique twist, the author writes from multiple points of view, but very rarely from the heroine's. This really increases the mystery behind the woman and readers get to discover her right along with Bryce. And can I just say that I have rarely met such a gallant hero as Bryce Bishop? A true gentleman with the heart of a Believer. His gentle pursuit of Charlotte still gives me goosebumps.

If you like depth in your characters and an unhurried plot that allows you time to savor all the exquisite elements of the read then Unspoken is the book for you.

Sidenote: Here's a link to the book trailer. Honestly, the best one I've ever seen. It totally captures the mood of the book. Take a peek:

The Nurse's Secret Suitor

GIVEAWAY

WYATT, CHERYL
THE NURSE'S SECRET SUITOR

A Strong-Willed Heart

Trauma nurse Kate Dalton can handle any challenge—except love. The combat veteran dreams of settling down, but heartbreak is one risk she won't take. Then a chance encounter opens her heart to a masked stranger…who might not be a stranger after all! Caleb Landis, the army medic behind the disguise, has always admired Kate, even though she only saw him as her best friend's brother. What will it take for Kate to discard her fears and discover the man she's always hoped to unmask?

Eagle Point Emergency:  Saving lives—and losing their hearts— in a small Illinois town

My Review:

I just love the precept in this novel! Having Caleb masquerade as Kate's secret admirer was so romantic and edgy and it upped the angstometer big time. I desperately wanted Kate to figure out the mystery of the masked man, but at the same time, I so enjoyed the novelty of her not knowing. And it really put poor Caleb through the wringer living a double life. So much fun! Talk about taking a romance to a new level!

An Untamed Heart

GIVEAWAY

SNELLING, LAURAINE
AN UNTAMED HEART

The Long-Awaited Prequel to the Red River of the North Series

Twenty-year-old Ingeborg Strand is certain she is destined to be an old maid. It's not that she's lacked suitors, but now she no longer can have the one she loved.

With the future looking bleak, her mother suggests that she leave Norway and start afresh in America, as so many others have done before her. But how will she accomplish that with little money and no one to accompany her?

Roald Bjorklund is a widower who has been planning to go to America, lured by the promise of free land. He's a good man, a hard-working man--with a young son who desperately needs a mother. Ingeborg can tell Roald is interested in her, but what about love? This isn't how she's always imagined it.

Ingeborg Strand has a heartrending decision to make...

My Review:

This is the kind of prequel you want to read after you have read the series. I haven't read the Red River of the North series, but Snelling fans will enjoy this book. I just think that a familiarity with the Bjorklund family is needed to really appreciate Ingeborg's story.

An Untamed Heart sets the stage for Nils and Ingeborg's love story to begin in America in the first novel so my romantical heart was left somewhat deflated since their romance wasn't fully developed. I think I'll have to get my hands on An Untamed Land to continue their story.

I loved the day to day details of life on a summer farm in Norway. It reminded me of Laura Ingalls Wilder's descriptions of farm life on the prairies. This book has that same kind of feel -- the mixture of joy and hard work and family. Definitely an interesting and captivating read about a strong willed woman who dares to dream.

Unforseeable

GIVEAWAY
MEHL, NANCY
UNFORSEEABLE

Callie Hoffman has a good life in Kingdom, Kansas. She's engaged to Levi Housler, the new pastor of Kingdom Mennonite Church, and she spends her days working with Lizzie Housler, her friend and soon-to-be sister-in-law, at the town cafe.

When a body is discovered on the road outside Kingdom and the deceased turns out to be the victim of a serial killer, the new county sheriff begins questioning Kingdom residents. Unsettled at the prospect of a killer in Kingdom, Callie is desperate to find answers for herself, especially when her own fiance seems to know more about the murder than he's telling.

As the town battles an entirely unforeseen danger and Callie's very life is threatened, the stakes are as high as they've ever been and the people of Kingdom must learn anew to put their trust in God alone.

My Review:

I love Nancy Mehl's books. She always leaves me with something thought-provoking to ponder upon. I feel my spirit stretched and my faith stronger for having read one of her novels. In Unforseeable, Mehl tackles the complex issues  that come with following your heart as you travel on your personal faith journey. A myriad of questions came to mind as I read.

Should you forsake the traditions of your family or do you cling to the familiar that has succored generations of your ancestors?

Is there room for a different kind of growth within the bounds of an existing standard of faith?

Is there only one true path to salvation or are there a myriad of forks in the road that lead to the same destination?

Lots of fodder for reflection that brought me deeper into the story as I wrestled for answers right along with the characters.

The suspense is riveting -- and the contrast between the evil in the world and the haven Kingdom strives to be makes that much more of an impact as the action revs up. I got to a point where I just couldn't put this book down.

A bonus for fans of the Road to Kingdom series is getting reacquainted with characters from the previous two books. They provide a solid support to Callie and Levi without taking away from the current love story. And no worries if you haven't read the earlier books -- Unforseeable reads well as a standalone novel.

A captivating conclusion to a fantastic series that will definitely leave you richer for the read.

Love Finds You in the City at Christmas

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
SCHMIDT, ANNA
LOVE FINDS YOU IN THE CITY AT CHRISTMAS

Love comes to New York City in two heartwarming stories of Christmas past and present.

In Red Kettle Christmas, it's 1946, and police officer Mike Wolzak inherits the family home. . . and the custody of his troubled sister. While on patrol during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mike meets a Salvation Army bell ringer struggling to support herself and her young child. Over the holiday season in Manhattan, she teaches the veteran how to support his family. In the process, he gains a new one.   In Manhattan Miracle, a war-weary soldier finally comes home. Max Wolzak is celebrating Christmas in the Manhattan brownstone where he spent much of his childhood when he meets Sarah, his sister's old schoolmate. Sparks fly as the pair gets reacquainted over holiday events, but when Max realizes she will leave for the Middle East the day after Christmas, he has a decision to make.

My Review:

Be still my heart -- I'm sure I heard the Hallelujah Chorus in the background as I finished this book. It is that good. That's moving and uplifting and down-home Christmasy good.  Both stories start with Macy's Thanksgiving parade and that sets the mood perfectly. Both stories have adorable little girls who know the true magic of Christmas and how to share it. Another excellent way to set that special mood. But though there are similarities in these two novellas, each author's distinctive voice creates a unique and heart-warming read.

In Red Kettle Christmas, Herne's characteristic writing style swept me into the heart of post World War II New York City  from the very first page. I love the way characters come to life at her fingertips. And I love how she portrays life and loss realistically, but always laced with hope. This novella has all the makings of a classic Christmas read.

Fast forward to present day and we get to read about the next generation of Wolzaks in Schmidt's Manhattan Miracle. Interesting to jump decades and land at the very same place and the very same time. Love that link between the two stories. This is another touching read that gave me goosebumps at the Hollywood worthy finale.

If you love reading Christmas stories, Love Finds You in the City at Christmas should definitely find it's way to the top of your TBR list. It's guaranteed to get you in the spirit of the season.

My Review:

An enthralling cat and mouse chase will keep you on the edge of your seat in this heart-stopping suspense. From the hair-raising opening to the charged conclusion, Tailer kept this reader hooked. And if the the threat hounding Jack isn't enough to get your attention, Casey's secret certainly will. I just love the way the author gradually revealed her backstory bit by bit. Born of Persuasion

GIVEAWAY

DOTTA, JESSICA
BORN OF PERSUASION

The year is 1838, and seventeen-year-old Julia Elliston’s position has never been more fragile. Orphaned and unmarried in a time when women are legal property of their fathers, husbands, and guardians, she finds herself at the mercy of an anonymous guardian who plans to establish her as a servant in far-off Scotland.

With two months to devise a better plan, Julia’s first choice to marry her childhood sweetheart is denied. But when a titled dowager offers to introduce Julia into society, a realm of possibilities opens. However, treachery and deception are as much a part of Victorian society as titles and decorum, and Julia quickly discovers her present is deeply entangled with her mother’s mysterious past. Before she knows what’s happening, Julia finds herself a pawn in a deadly game between two of the country’s most powerful men. With no laws to protect her, she must unravel the secrets on her own. But sometimes truth is elusive and knowledge is deadly.

My Review:

Regency meets Gothic in this page-turner of a read that is both compelling and complex. Told in first person narrative, Julia's voice is riveting. She's not a completely likable character but it is clear to see that her negative attributes are the result of an unusual upbringing and, of course, the class distinction prevalent of the times.  And she is a victim of the societal norms of that time period as well. When I kept that in mind, I could understand some of her decisions better. This book is as much about that lack of women's rights as it is about sinister plots and a conflicted love story.

I think I can honestly guarantee that you won't be able to guess most of the plot twists -- in fact, I'll wager that you won't see many of them coming. That fact alone kept me up late at night reading. There just never seemed to be a good spot to stop until the last page loomed on the horizon. Alas, even then, the reader is left with way too many questions and an unsettled feeling of not actually having finished the book at all. That's because this is the first of a trilogy -- the continuous kind that will need to be read in order one right after the other to get the full story. Unfortunately the second book doesn't come out until next summer which is far too long for me to wait to find out what happens next in Julia's life. I really feel that publishers should warn their readers ahead of time when a series is continuous like this one is. But, if you don't mind cliff-hanger endings and you enjoy a twisted tale of suspense and intrigue then this is definitely the book for you.

Stranded

GIVEAWAY

PETTREY, DANI
STRANDED

When Her Friend Goes Missing,
Every Minute Counts
Darcy St. James returns to Alaska to join a journalist friend undercover on the trail of a big story. But when Darcy arrives, she finds her friend has disappeared. Troubled by the cruise ship's vague explanation, Darcy uses her cover as a travel reporter to investigate further.

The last person Gage McKenna expects to see during his summer aboard a cruise ship leading adventure excursions is Darcy. And in typical Darcy fashion, she's digging up more trouble.

He'd love to just forget her--but something won't let him. And he can't help but worry about her as they are heading into more remote regions of Alaska and eventually into foreign waters. Something sinister is going on, and the deeper they push, the more Gage fears they've only discovered the tip of the iceberg.

My Review:

Oh my goodness but I LOVE the McKenna clan and that means I LOVE the Alaskan Courage series! I get a thrill just knowing that there are still more stories to come because I can't get enough of these characters. Pettrey has brought them to life and each one has captured my heart to the point that I feel like I'm reader-stalking them when I devour each book. Yes, I'm that much of a groupie! Bordering on creating a McKenna Clan fan club. I haven't been this attached to a fictional family since the O'Malleys. :-)

And the suspense is riveting...exasperating...breath-stealing. Intrepid Darcy kept giving me heart palpitations! That girl is like a dog with a bone when she's hot on the trail of trouble. With blinders on and no sense of self-preservation. It's no wonder Gage was a tad bit taciturn. The poor man has my sincere sympathies. It's a wonder we both didn't come out of Stranded with gray hair!

Rich characterization and realistic dialogue made this read an emotional one for me. I love the way Pettrey's characters aren't afraid to share their love of the Savior. Their faith is a seamless part of who they are and the author has written a beautiful reckoning with God scene that is gritty and real and uplifting all at the same time.

If you haven't guessed by now -- I think Stranded belongs on the top of every romantic suspense lovers TBR pile.

The Secret Keeper

GIVEAWAY

LEWIS, BEVERLY
THE SECRET KEEPER

With her love for all things old-fashioned, Jennifer Burns has often been told she's an "old soul," but no one is prepared for the young woman's decision to set aside her modern life in favor of the Old Order Amish world. Yet Jenny does exactly that, adopting Plain dress and settling in with Samuel and Rebecca Lapp while she works as a mother's helper for the bishop's wife--a far cry from her former job as an x-ray technician.

The people of Hickory Hollow are curious about the beautiful young seeker among them, one handsome Amishman in particular. But he is not the only man vying for Jenny's affections, and Jenny faces many challenges in the Proving time the brethren have set for her...challenges of the heart, as well as the spirit.

Will Jenny's secrets keep her from the peace she longs for? Or will they lead the way home?

My Review:

I found this a fascinating read on some many levels. First, getting to follow a "Seeker" as she explores the notion of living an Amish lifestyle with the goal of actually converting. I think most Amish readers have harbored at least a smidgen of that kind of yearning and being able to read about Jenny's progress was a bit like living a dream.

Another attention grabber is that Jenny isn't the only seeker. Yes, she's the only Englischer bent on converting to the Amish faith, but that doesn't mean that other characters around her aren't seeking in their own way. There are wonderful faith-wrestling questions in the pages of this book that challenged me to think.

And Jenny isn't the only one harboring secrets. This is a story that explores the impact secrets can have on a life and a community. More fascinating stuff to ponder.

Then there's the sweet romance that's really just icing on the cake. It finishes off an exquisite read in a most satisfying way. There's a reason Beverly Lewis is considered #1 in Amish fiction.

Danger in Amish Country

GIVEAWAY

PERRY, MARTA
BURKE, DIANE
WILKINSON, KIT
DANGER IN AMISH COUNTRY

Love and danger collide in three Amish novellas.

Fall from Grace by Marta Perry When one of her students witnesses a crime, Sara Esch gets too close to the truth, and widower Caleb King must risk it all for the woman who's taught him to love again. Dangerous Homecoming by Diane Burke Katie Lapp needs her childhood friend Joshua Miller more than ever when someone threatens her late husband's farm. Can Joshua protect her…even if it endangers his heart? Return to Willow Trace by Kit Wilkinson A series of accidents has startled their Plain community…and leads Lydia Stoltz to Joseph Yoder, the man who once broke her heart. At every turn, it seems their shared past holds the key to their future.

My Review:

Veteran author, Marta Perry leads in this three novella compilation riddled with suspense and romance. Each story is distinctive in both author voice and content; the only thread tying them together being a threat to the quiet plain living of an Amish community. The jarring contrast between the suspense and Amish genres had me hooked before I even opened the book but the quality of storytelling kept me reading right to the very end. It's an intriguing combination that gets me every time. The authors did a stellar job of balancing the two genres and I hope Harlequin continues to produce more Amish romantic suspense.
