Saving Hope

GIVEAWAY
RETRO RE-READ SUNDAY!

DALEY, MARGARET
SAVING HOPE

When a teenager goes missing from the Beacon of Hope School, Texas Ranger Wyatt Sheridan and school director Kate Winslow are forced into a dangerous struggle against a human trafficking organization. But the battle brings dire consequences as Wyatt's daughter is terrorized and  Kate is kidnapped.

Now it's personal, and Wyatt finds both his faith and investigative skills challenged as he fights to discover the mastermind behind the ring before evil destroys everyone he loves.

My Review:

published in 2012

I listened to the audible edition for my second read of this book and enjoyed Carly Robins's narration. She gives each character a unique voice and matches the edgy pacing of the storytelling. Really well done.

---

Compelling and gritty, Daley tackles a sensitive subject with compassion. She doesn't mince words, but she does offer, as the title suggests, hope. I found it hard to read at times because she captured the horror and fear of human trafficking so well. But those scenes are balanced by Kate's determination and drive to make things better for the girls in her care. An artful show of contrast between the harsh reality of the streets and the second chance the girls are getting at Beacon of Hope School really makes an impact.

Add in the suspense that builds to a fever pitch by the end and Saving Hope becomes a real page-turner. As readers, we know some things the characters don't and that really upped the tension. Wyatt and Kate didn't know how close to evil they really were, but I did and it about drove me crazy when they refused to listen to my warnings!

Daley also manages to weave a winning romance into the taut plot. Emotionally charged and tension-riddled, Saving Hope is one romantic suspense you'll want to sink your teeth into.

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

This giveaway is for a gently read paperback copy -- the book has been stored in a glassed bookcase so it's in really good condition. Still has that new smell. :-)

Naomi's Gift

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO RE-READ DAY!

CLIPSTON, AMY
NAOMI'S GIFT

Naomi King has been unlucky in love. Longing for marriage and children, she pursued love full tilt, disregarding traditional courtship. Now, at the ripe old age of twenty-four, Naomi has been burned twice, certain she'll spend her life helping with her mother's quilt business and caring for her eight siblings.

As Christmas approaches -- at time of family, faith, and hope for many others -- Naomi is resigned to what she believes is God's will for her, and she throws herself into tending the quilt booth at the farmers market. Even so, she longs for love.

Enter Caleb Schmucker, a young widower with an eight-year-old daughter. Visiting family for the holidays, Caleb is dealing with his own guilt, uncertainties, and longings.  As he and Naomi find themselves together at social gatherings and holiday events, both treasure their budding, relationship.

Caleb finds the friendship awakening feelings he's suppressed since his wife's death. Naomi begins to experience emotions deeper than any she's ever felt. Slowly, cautiously, Naomi finds the courage to open her heart to this thoughtful, faith-filled man.

With her belief in love already shaken, Naomi must once again reconsider her hopes and dreams and reexamine her faith.

My Review:

published in 2016

Sniffle...reading this review from 11 years ago was bittersweet because my old man sheltie was still alive and clamouring for walks. :-( Luckily, the story distracted me. :-)

---

I was transfixed by this novella. Read it in one sitting as a matter of fact. Poor Simba missed another walk on account of a good book. I have to stop doing that or both our waistlines will suffer! Clipston weaves a tight plot line with surprising depth and characterization that makes this a rewarding read. Her pacing is impeccable, nothing drags, rather each scene builds seamlessly to the climax. I think it's more difficult to write a really good short novel but Clipston has certainly mastered the art. I felt as satisfied as if I'd just finished an epic Amish trilogy. Speaking of which -- readers who have read The Kauffmann Bakery Series will be excited to catch glimpses of old friends. I haven't read the series (but certainly will now!) but didn't feel anything lacked in Naomi's Gift because of that. A lovely Christmas read that captures the essence of the season.

 GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

This giveaway is for a gently read hardcover copy. (I discovered I have the same title in a two book bind up so this one is up for grabs.)

If you would like a chance to win a copy of Naomi's Gift, leave a comment below or email me at kavluvstoreadATyahooDOTca. Christmas in Evergreen

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ!

NAIGLE, NANCY
CHRISTMAS IN EVERGREEN

A snowy small town.
A snow globe that grants wishes.
A love that's meant to be.

Evergreen, Vermont is about to be in the rearview mirror of Allie Shaw's vintage red pickup truck. It's hard to say goodbye to her small town and her veterinarian practice, but she's moving to Washington D.C., where her big-city-loving boyfriend lives.

Ever since Ryan Bellamy's wife died, he hardly knows how to celebrate Christmas. He's decided to take his daughter Zoe to Florida, and Evergreen  is just a quick stop on the way to the airport. While they're there, Zoe partakes in a local tradition, making a Christmas wish on the now globe at the town diner.

But neither Allie's nor Ryan's Christmas goes as planned. They've checked their wish lists twice, and they didn't say anything about meeting someone new...or about a fresh chance at love.

This magical, feel-good romance includes a free Hallmark recipe for Vermont Christmas Card Cookies.

My Review:

published in 2018

Ever since I read The Shell Collector by this author I've wanted to read more of her work and what better place to start then with one of her many Christmas novels?

Christmas in Evergreen is a novelization of a Hallmark movie (which I haven't seen) so you get the small town charm and a few quirky characters that come along with that. As well as some Christmas magic! And a sweet romance. All combined with the kind of holiday flare that will have you humming Jingle Bells the rest of the month. :-)

Now, for those who are love triangle gun-shy like me, fear not, I bring tidings of great joy -- this is NOT that plot! I can't say more without spoiling some of the story, but it's handled very well and barely a ripple in the grand scheme of things. I was more alarmed about Allie leaving this charming town for the city! What was she thinking? How could she bring herself to go? Luckily fate transpires against her and we have a deliciously warm and inviting festive story.

Absolutely adore young Zoe and her enthusiasm for all things Christmas -- especially if it's happening in Evergreen. And this story is piled high with the best kinds of holiday traditions and activities. If it wasn't so atrociously hot out I'd try my hand at making those Vermont Christmas Card Cookies. (the perils of jumping on the Christmas in July bandwagon!)

I listened to the audible edition of Christmas in Evergreen, beautifully narrated by Kathleen McInerney. Her performance increased my 'reading' pleasure that much more!

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

This giveaway is for a paperback or ebook copy -- reader's choice.

Penny's Yuletide Wish

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ!

BRITTON, SALLY
PENNY'S YULETIDE WISH

When Penny and Robert meet again on Christmas Eve, will their childhood love bloom into something more? They only have the Twelve Days of Christmas to find out.

Robert Ellsworth, born the son of a wealthy gentleman, is now a mere steward in the service of another. While his position brings him satisfaction, it does not make him much of a matrimonial catch. It hardly matters, as Robert's heart has long belonged to his childhood friend. When a chance meeting brings them face to face on Christmas Eve, he cannot bring himself to hope that she feels the same.

When she lost her parents years before, Penelope Clark also lost contact with her dearest friend. Visiting the community where she grew up, Penny is taken aback by how handsome Robert has grown, and how little her girlhood infatuation has diminished. But when a Christmas Ball leads to a mistletoe kiss, she finds herself as much in love as ever before. Unfortunately for her, Robert confesses his heart already belongs to a mysterious woman.

Through the Twelve Days of Christmas, Penny and Robert each make a wish for the other's happiness. Will they realize only confessing their hearts will grant those wishes before their time together is spent?

Penny's Yuletide Wish is a sweet Regency romance novella, and continuation of the Branches of Love series by Sally Britton. It can be read as a standalone romance.

My Review:

published in 2019

Nothing says Christmas quite like a Regency holiday romance and this one is unique in that it starts on Christmas Eve and goes through to Epiphany. Love the yuletide details and traditions the author has incorporated into the story. Times were so much simpler back then!

This is very much a doomed-but-not-really-doomed romance. :-) And by that I mean that both Penny and Robert harbour feelings for the other but, a) don't reveal those feelings and b) are certain the other doesn't feel the same way. So we have lots of pining looks across the ballroom and befuddled conversations that lead to misunderstandings and there's always that yearning for what one knows one can never have! Swoon!

It would get tiresome in a full-length novel, but works wonderfully well in this shorter novella length story. Keeps the tension taut and the reader on edge. And I loved the teasing and banter between Robert and his brothers! Nice lighthearted moments to sooth the unrequited love ones. :-)

This book just plain made me happy and put me in a festive mood despite the fact that I read (listened) to it in the middle of a July heatwave!

Penny's Yuletide Wish is the seventh book in the Branches of Love series but reads fine as a standalone. I've only read one other book in the series and I had no problems diving into this one.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd and enjoyed my visit to Regency England very much.

Goal Update: #2 Catch up on a series I'm behind in, #5 Diversify my reading

A Wild Goose Chase Christmas

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ !

ALEE, JENNIFER
A WILD GOOSE CHASE CHRISTMAS

Upon her grandmother's death, Izzy Fontaine finds herself in possession of a Wild Goose Chase pattern quilt that supposedly leads to a great treasure. Of course, once the rest of the family finds out about the "treasure map," they're determined to have a go at the treasure themselves. And, if that weren't enough, Max Logan, a local museum curator, contacts Izzy and says that Grandma Isabella promised him the quilt.

What is it about this quilt that makes everyone want it? Is Izzy on a wild goose chase of her own, or a journey that will lead her to the treasure her grandmother intended?

My Review:

published in c2012

I've been having a blast catching up on this Quilts of Love series courtesy of Audible Plus and this one is extra special because of the seasonal theme. Definitely a Hallmark worthy plot with characters you either love or...not so much...and an enemies to more love story. Along with the heritage quilt that takes centerstage and is the source of much conflict.

Izzy is on the outskirts of her fractured family and her unexpected legacy from her beloved grandmother threatens to add new fissures to an already crumbling family foundation. Really enjoyed the way the author lets us slowly into Izzy's past which helps to make sense of her present circumstances.

Izzy and Max's meet-cute is a perfect comedy of errors (insert me fan-girling over Max's grandfather!) I can't say much more without spewing a landmine of spoilers, but this story is perfectly plotted and I appreciated that those 'dark moments' that inevitably come in a romance weren't over-the-top or prolonged. Just the right mix of angst and regret to spice things up and keep a reader on edge waiting for the happily ever after.

Goal Update: #2 Catch up on a series I'm behind in

The Christmas Bargain

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ!

HATFIELD, SHANNA
THE CHRISTMAS BARGAIN

Luke Granger is about to get more than he bargained for.

As owner and manager of the Hardman bank, Luke Granger is a man of responsibility and integrity in the small 1890s Eastern Oregon town. Calling in a long overdue loan. Luke finds himself reluctantly accepting a bargain in lieu of payment from the shiftless farmer who barters his daughter his debt.

Philomena Booth is both mortified and relieved when her father sends her off with the banker as payment of the debt. Held captive on the farm by her father since the death of her mother more than a decade earlier, Philomena is grateful to leave. If only it had been someone other than the handsome and charismatic Luke Granger riding in to rescue her. Ready to uphold her end of the bargain as Luke's cook and housekeeper. Philomena is prepared for the hard work ahead. What she isn't prepared for is being forced to marry Luke as part of this crazy Christmas bargain.

My Review:

published in 2012

A Christmas themed marriage of convenience romance! This one is pure romance. (Fans and chocolate recommended) :-) It's all about Philomena's journey from abused daughter to cherished wife and I enjoyed that journey!

Luke's gentle wooing, flirtations that gradually grow more heated...cue the fainting couches and keep the smelling salts handy! The banter as Philomena becomes more comfortable is sooooo sweet and funny. And I loved the way they grew into their relationship.

Be aware this is a kissing book! Romantically romantical to the nth degree. (There's one scene at the very end that I think pushes the boundaries a bit for Christian Fiction, but it's still clean.)

There are some wonderful secondary characters who help (and possibly try to hinder) Luke and Philomena along their way to their happily ever after.

And, happy day, this is the first in the Hardman Holiday series so I predict more Christmas stories in my reading future.

Oh, and I listened to the audible edition of this book narrated by Michael I. Canaan and I have to say I'm not a fan of the way he portrays the female characters. Almost cartoony high or simpering missish -- at least that's the way they come across to me.

The Christmas Cowboy

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ

HATFIELD, SHANNA
THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY

Flying from city to city in her job as a busy corporate trainer for a successful direct sales company, Kenzie Beckett doesn't have time for a man. And most certainly not for the handsome cowboy she keeps running into at the airport. Burned twice, she doesn't trust anyone wearing boots and Wranglers, especially someone as charming and handsome as Tate Morgan.

Among the top saddle bronc riders in the rodeo circuit, easy-going Tate Morgan can handle the toughest horse out there, but trying to handle the beautiful Kenzie Beckett is a completely different story.

As the holiday season approaches, this Christmas Cowboy is going to need more than a little mistletoe to win her heart.

My Review:

published in 2013

Classic romance with all the familiar tropes. And this is definitely a kissing book, people, so if that isn't your thing, don't give ol' Tate there a second glance. It's funny because GR reviewers either love it or hate it because of all the smooching.  I personally, didn't have a problem with those scenes (waving her fan and blushing furiously.) But they are why I'm calling The Christmas Cowboy a classic. This is traditional, warm-fuzzies, feel good, pure romance.

Things start sizzling as sparks fly during the meet-cute, and they never cool down, even during the 'dark moment'. Tate and Kenzie meet at the airport, but they've noticed each other on multiple occasions previously since they are both frequent flyers. So, while it's their first actual meet, the reader knows that these two have been circling around each other for months.

Tate comes off all flirty and charming...but it's important to know that he's only that way with Kenzie. She's wary, not just because of his heart-breaking smile, but because she has some history with cowboys, and not the good kind. What follows is a fabulous little romance that stretches out over half a year or so which means you'll have to wait until about two thirds of the way through to get to the Christmas stuff.

I listened to the audible edition, narrated by Luke E. Andreen He did a great job, but I really do prefer a female narrator -- especially for the heroine 'voice.' Still, I enjoyed the listen and will be continuing with this Rodeo Romance series -- all Christmas based with a rodeo cowboy theme! Yeehaw!

Goal Update: #1 Read more indie authors (hybrid author), #7 Start new-to-me series

A Cliche Christmas

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO RE-READ DAY!

DEESE, NICOLE
A CLICHE CHRISTMAS

Georgia Cole -- known in Hollywood as the "Holiday Goddess" -- has made a name for herself writing heartwarming screenplays chock-full of Christmas clichés, but she has yet to experience the true magic of the season. So, when her eccentric grandmother volunteers her to direct a pageant at Georgia's hometown community theater, she is less than thrilled. To make matters worse, she'll be working alongside Weston James, her childhood crush and the one man she has tried desperately to forget.

Now, facing memories of a lonely childhood and the humiliation of her last onstage performance seven years earlier, Georgia is on the verge of a complete mistletoe meltdown. As Weston attempts to thaw the frozen walls around her heart, Georgia endeavors to let go of her fears and give love a second chance. If she does, will she finally believe that Christmas can be more than a cliché?

My Review:

Ha -- I first read this book during a summer heatwave six years ago and my second read through is...tada...during a summer heatwave! What are the odds? Super excited to find this one in audible too.

---

Christmas in July! I thought to lower the intolerable summer temps outside by reading a cool, refreshing winter story but I didn't factor in the delectable romance. Temperatures spiked. So did my heart rate. Snowflake kisses are the best! A delectable holiday romance with heart.

Deese measures humour and angst in even doses and delivers a breathtaking love story worthy of a Hallmark movie. Just like the ones Georgia makes a living writing. Unfortunately, her real love life is the exact opposite...until her grandmother talks her into coming home for the Christmas holidays and she comes face to face with her high school sweetheart.

There is something so delicious about Weston's steady, deliberate pursuit. They aren't teenagers anymore. Older, but maybe not wiser as far as their feelings for each other are concerned. Such an exquisite love story full of  feisty fighting scenes and snow melting kisses. It isn't long before Georgia and Weston discover that Jesus can work something good out their broken lives.

No need to wait until 'tis the season to enjoy Weston and Georgia's story -- it's perfect for any time of year -- whenever you're in the mood for a toe-curling literary retreat.
