My Review:

What a clever theme to bind a collection of suspense novellas together! And how amazing that when you give that theme -- betrayal -- to three different authors they each come up with a totally different twist on it! That's literary awesomesauce right there. But it gets better because each novella has the same 'oomph' that you'd find in a full length novel! Incredible pacing filled with tension and danger and a trail of clues to be pieced together. I read each novella in one page-turning frenzy of a sitting!

Henderson's "Betrayed" features Ann and Paul Falcon (one of my favourite suspense 'power' couples ever!) as they unexpectedly stumble onto a mystery that leads them to question a murder sentence. Lots of scrumptious police procedural stuff that I find so fascinating. And that ending...phew...I wish I could say more but not going to post any spoilers!

There is something deliciously shivery about a super storm that cuts off communication to the outside world. Especially when a killer's on the loose. Cue the sinister background music and grab your security blanket and some soothing chocolate before you hunker down with Pettrey's "Deadly Isle."  Love the mix of romance and suspense and the breathless race to find a killer!

Blue Justice fans will be thrilled to get up close and personal with the St. John family again in Eason's "Code of Ethics". A definite edge-of-your-seater has Ruthie (the only sibling not in law enforcement) gets swept up in a dangerous web of corruption as she strives to help a wounded patient. Of course, it isn't long before her sibs gets involved in an unusual kind of family reunion. Great suspense liberally dosed with romance -- and some great sibling humour!

My Review:

This is the second Evie Blackwell Cold Case mystery but reads well as a standalone. The special cold case task-force is now official and working on their first cases. Threads of Suspicion features David and Evie in a fascinating play-by-play of police procedures. And I do mean fascinating.

It's like watching a crime drama show only getting all the clue building bits they skim over to get to the action scenes. This suspense is the opposite. Low on action and danger but high on the painstaking work police officers put in before they make an arrest. It's rich in dialogue, friendship building and complicated romances (David and Evie are both in serious relationships -- but not with each other.)

Evie is an astute, tough-as-nails cop but surprisingly vulnerable in her personal life. It's an intriguing contrast -- the confident and brilliant investigator doesn't mesh with the caution she carries into her romantic relationship. Love the rich, deeply thoughtful conversations she has with Rob. His steadfastness and patience as he waits for her.

 A brilliant glimpse into the complicated world of investigative police work -- not your typical action-packed suspense but captivating all the same.

My Review:

*First published as True Courage in 2004 and then reissued in 2009 as Kidnapped. The only copy in print at this time is Kidnapped so that is the edition the winner will receive.

This is vintage Henderson. A tense page-turner that still offers sweet breathing spaces of tender romance. Honestly, I absolutely adore the way this author develops a romance in her earlier works. So unhurried but with real intent. Luke and Caroline live in different worlds -- you really can't get farther apart than a school teacher and an FBI agent. She spends her days nurturing the children in her charge while he spends way too many hours wrestling with the dark depravity of the dregs of society. The innocent and the cynic. And yet they work...when they can get their schedules to mesh.

And then their world turns upside down and the suspense takes off with so many twists and turns that it's impossible to catch your breath. And Henderson is so clever in her delivery -- some things we know ahead of the characters, others we're left to struggle right along side them. There's a real sense of urgency -- emotionally delivered from various points of view. Made my heart race as I sped my way to the end -- which brought sublime reader satisfaction!

As she studies old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths surprising connections. One way or another, she knows Gabriel Thane and his family will be key to the answers she seeks.

My Review:

I think in order to enjoy Dee Henderson's new storytelling style you have to let go of the O'Malleys. Yes cherish them and reread them and display those books on your keeper shelves, but opening a current Henderson novel and expecting an O'Malley type of story isn't doing the author or the reader any favours.

No matter what style she's writing in, Henderson is still the best at showing the slow but steady journey towards relationship. At the beginning of Traces of Guilt, Evie and Gabriel don't even know each other -- they have a bang up first meet that develops into a professional respect and then friendship over the course of the story. I like Evie and I like Gabriel and I'd like to see them romantically linked. That hasn't happened in this book but since this is labeled as An Evie Blackwell Cold Case, I'm hoping there's another book which will lead to the resolution I long for.

This isn't a nail-biting-edge-of-your-seat kind of read. Instead the author has chosen to highlight the methodical, painstaking process of police work. It's a fascinating look into the thought process of a detective. And when they talk shop it's full of realistic dialogue which isn't always riveting and is sometimes repetitive.

In a broader sense, this is a Thane family story. We're introduced to brothers, Josh, Will and Gabe. Given enough meat to whet our appetite for further books. Each brother has a complicated relationship with a woman they are interested in and Ann Turner (a recurring character from previous books) seems to know the secrets of all these women. She's as cryptic as ever -- warning without explaining, throwing out hints until your mind runs in a thousand gruesome directions but rarely coming out with something substantial when you think she should. But that's Ann -- keeper of secrets. And she does reveal all eventually.

Not your typical suspense since it highlights methodology rather than action. I can usually read a book in a  day -- especially when it's an edge-of-your-seater -- but it took me three days to finish Traces of Guilt. Not because I wasn't intrigued...but I didn't feel the kind of sense of urgency that would keep me up at night turning pages. A good, steady, enjoyable read with promise of more to come.

My Review:

A trifecta of talented romantic suspense writers! Seriously, don't you just want to swoon at this lineup? And they don't disappoint. Three compelling novellas with a central theme of 'sins of the past'. Really interesting to see how each author interprets that and delivers a page-turning read in the process.

Missing by Dee Henderson -- A close look at meticulous police work. Love the way Henderson sets the force in motion  Procedures and policy and heart. Police Chief John Graham is out of his jurisdiction upon his return to Chicago when his mother goes missing. Lieutenant Sharon Noble is in charge of the case but she's also sympathetic and willing to let him assist. Professional courtesy turns to respect and develops into friendship as they chase down clues. Henderson packs a lot of detail into this novella and I was on tenterhooks right to the end. Case solved and the hope of romance in the future. Sweet perfection.

Shadowed by Dani Pettrey -- Fans of the Alaskan Courage series be prepared to scream yourself hoarse when I let you into on a secret. There's a McKenna connection in this novella. You might say it's the beginning of it all. Ben and Libby's journey to romance is fraught with danger and intrigue in delicious Pettrey style. There's plenty of wilderness action and some near death experiences as they try to catch a murderer. Not to mention some toe-curling romance. An awesome combination for sure.


Blackout by Lynette Eason -- How's this for a spellbinding first line: "Macey Adams wished she could remember the sins that haunted her." Eason engaged my interest and kept it right to the end of this action-packed, cat-and-mouse suspense where danger lurks at every turn. Neighbour and police detective, Chad Latham is the perfect ally -- especially since he's been interested in getting to know Macey better for the two years they've lived next door to each other. Now he's beginning to understand why she has kept herself aloof from his advances. With the barriers down there's a chance for romance to flourish...as long as they can stay alive long enough!

My Review:

You'll find that there are some mixed reviews out there about Taken. Readers either love it or...well, don't. I think the thing you need to understand before diving into this read is that this isn't your typical, heart-in-your-throat, page-turning suspense. This story deals with the aftermath of an eleven year long kidnapping. And as Shannon deals with the fallout, we learn about those years. The suspense is subtle -- the slow reveal of the pieces of her life over the past decade. And while I wasn't jumping out of my skin or nervously looking over my shoulder all the time, I was still riveted.

I don't think there's anyone who can build a slow romance out of friendship like Henderson can. I love the deliberate care she takes with relationships. It's almost understated but so important to the depth of each character. The author does an admirable -- and realistic -- job of meshing Matthew and Shannon's lives given the circumstances that surround them. There's kindness and patience and such tenderness that it made my heart ache, but honestly, they're just at the beginning of something wonderful by the time the book ends. I appreciated the realism though other reviewers found the romance lacking.

Another interesting aspect of this book is that it is written completely from Matthew's point of view. That took me by surprise at first and I kept waiting for the POV switch that never came. But, honestly, I don't think Henderson could have written it any other way since Shannon is at the core of all the suspense and it wouldn't do for the reader to be party to her inner most thoughts and impressions. However, that doesn't mean I didn't feel a connection with her. I did. And seeing her through Matthew's eyes only, discovering the nuances of her character at the exact time he did, actually sharpened my impressions of her. And at the same time deepened my understanding of him.

There's also some thought-provoking discussions on God and where He fits into the grand scheme of our lives -- especially when bad things happen. A great starting point for discussion or private contemplation.

So, would I recommend Taken? Absolutely. A compelling read that totally captured my imagination and still lingers with me after the read is over.

My Review:

A stunning, complex novel that lingers with me still.

First, a gentle warning to Henderson fans: This is not the O'Malleys. And that's totally okay. Fine actually. But I have read some reviews that expressed disappointment over the different tone in this book and I just think readers shouldn't dive into Unspoken with any false assumptions.

Henderson's trademark complexity and deep characterization will tantalize readers from the get go. I love the way she develops a romance in slow, measured steps -- friendship first until the connection grows in depth and breadth.  This is very much the case in Unspoken as, unlike most suspense novels, the time line covers more than a year.

Layers of suspense are expertly entwined within this complex story -- two cold cases vie for supremacy over Charlotte's secrets. The unraveling of her mystery is achingly slow and kept me anxiously turning pages. Henderson is an expert at pacing and doesn't hurry through a single scene in this 400+ page novel and that is fine by me.

In a unique twist, the author writes from multiple points of view, but very rarely from the heroine's. This really increases the mystery behind the woman and readers get to discover her right along with Bryce. And can I just say that I have rarely met such a gallant hero as Bryce Bishop? A true gentleman with the heart of a Believer. His gentle pursuit of Charlotte still gives me goosebumps.

If you like depth in your characters and an unhurried plot that allows you time to savor all the exquisite elements of the read then Unspoken is the book for you.

My Review:

 Such a bittersweet, beautiful love story! I was in tears through most of it because I 'know' the O'Malleys and I knew where Jennifer's journey would lead. Dee Henderson certainly knows how to develop a romance into a nurturing, soul-satisfying read.

Tom Peterson is a worthy hero and I get goosebumps just thinking about what he started by sharing Christ with Jennifer. Over the course of six books  in the O'Malley series we are blessed to see the fruits of that first witness made by Tom as one by one each sibling comes into the fold.

If you are an O'Malley fan, you need to read this book to complete the series...with a tissue warning alert. If you haven't read any of the previous books...helllloooo, what are you waiting for?! I'm not sure when this book would best be read -- as the first or the last. Either way though, it must be read!

My Review:

Deeply romantic. A stunning portrayal of characters and events that lead to an unforgettable love story. Paul Falcon is so deliberate in his pursuit of Ann -- the lengths he goes to, the way he thinks through every move, his ability to accept Ann for who she is and not try molding her into someone she could never be. There's raw emotion in this book -- for both the characters and the readers. Honestly -- the most romantic book I have ever read!

Fans of Dee Henderson's writing will get multiple thrills though this book stands easily alone as a wonderful read. I don't want to give anything away so that's all I'm saying. :-)

As far as the romantic suspense goes -- I'd almost categorize this one as more of mystery since there isn't any imminent peril involved. Readers get an incredible glimpse into the day to day workings of an F.B.I.  investigation and that includes the tedious wait times, the lapses in fresh clues and all the other frustrations that we don't always get to read about. I love the way Henderson built the case -- it's complex but she delivers each piece of information in a way that is easy to digest.

Ann isn't your typical heroine -- and I think I loved that most about her. She knows who she is and is comfortable in her own skin. Cautious in who she allows into her sphere. But for all that she has rich friendships based on truth and respect. The kind that will last for a life time. I think that says a lot about her character. She's also a good cop, thorough in an investigation and brilliant at putting the pieces together to get the full 'story'. That's her absolute strength and what captures Paul's interest right from the start.

What can I say about Paul -- other  that I've fallen completely in love. :-) Hes' a family man, a people person, driven at work, but not to the point that he blocks out the value of friendship and family. I love the way he thinks through a problem -- whether it is work related or relationship related. He is relentless at both. But he doesn't overpower. He's the quintessential team player.

In some ways Ann and Paul are complete opposites, yet Henderson weaves a believable tale that brings them together. Full Disclosure is a definite departure from her famed O'Malley series, but I enjoyed it thoroughly nonetheless.
