A Safe Place for Christmas

GIVEAWAY

CARTER, LISA
A SAFE PLACE FOR CHRISTMAS

Can giving this baby a holiday refuge help heal his reluctant heart?

Taking in a mother and child is the last thing Luke Morgan expects this Christmas as he struggles to keep his tree farm afloat. But when Shayla Coggins and her baby boy are stranded during a snowstorm, he can't turn them away. Even as Shayla's little boy draws them together, her dangerous secret comes home...and makes falling in love riskier than ever.

My Review:

There's something special about a Truelove Christmas -- that would be the town that lives by the motto "Where true love awaits." And it's outfitted with a posse of matchmaking honorary grannies who take that slogan very seriously. Which is why Luke Morgan is quaking in his boots when they set their sights on him and the stranded young mother he's providing a haven for.

Shayla isn't exactly a stranger -- they knew each other in high school but circumstances kept them from developing more than a casual acquaintance. Shayla was the girl from the wrong side of the tracks, struggling to survive a roughshod upbringing and, while Luke was raised in a nurturing family, tragedy struck his life in his senior year and he's been scrabbling to keep up every since.

So...not the perfecting time for romance....

Until Lisa Carter works her storytelling magic and creates a heartwarming, holiday-infused, unforgettable Christmas story. There's angst and laughter and the delightful hesitancy of new love. Even a spot of danger as the author brings some of her suspense talent to the plot. And the cutest baby boy ever!!!! As well as a town full of the kind of folks you want in your life. Truelove is a community full of hope and faith and the belief that everyone deserves a happily ever after.

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

This giveaway is for a gently read paperback copy.

Jane by the Book

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO RE-READ DAY!

BASHAM, PEPPER

JANE BY THE BOOK

A Jane Austen inspired novella

She's level-headed and ordered. He talks to imaginary characters. She keeps to the plan. He never has one.

Will true love find a way to color outside the lines but inside God's love to create a story they can write together?

Four years ago, Jane Warwick escaped the shame of being jilted at the altar by becoming a housekeeper at the secluded Inn at Simeon Ridge. Predictable and quiet, the inn and large Simeon family help Jane find a place to heal but also cultivate her natural strengths for order and planning. But an unexpected visit to Bath, England, upsets Jane's peaceful monotony and sends her out of her comfort zone, directly into the harrowing path of historical detective author, Titus Stewart.

The only plans Titus sticks to are family holidays and the ones that send him careening into his story worlds, but when an uptight innkeeper stumbles into his life -- and his latest novel -- nonfiction begins to take on a much more interesting gleam.

With the help of a mysterious journal, will they both uncover a romance that stands the test of time?

My Review:

published in 2018

This is me, swooning just as much the second time around. I was arranging all my Pepper Basham books on my author highlight shelf (doesn't everyone do that monthly? Or is my librarianishness showing? I just can't resist the urge to showcase books by theme or author even in my own little (or not so) home library.) Anyway, once I got my hands on Titus I couldn't let him go until we got reacquainted. :-)

----

"If God can use a talking donkey and a group of disgruntled fishermen, I think He can inspire an author with the right heart and abilities to create a story that will touch people's lives." (p 86)

Love, love, LOVE!!!!!! In a giddy, tilt-a-whirl, heart-thrumming, cheeks-hurt-from-grinning kind of way. Short (novella length) but oh so sweet!!!! And God bless authors who go to the trouble of making their novellas available in paperback format! This cherished copy is going on my keeper shelf and every time I spy it's pretty cover I'm going to get all nostalgic and swoony. :-) And isn't it adorable?! Love that both the hero and heroine are sporting glasses. You don't see that every day.

If you enjoy a bookish love story -- you know, where there's tons of references to books and reading and the power of story you will be over-the-moon ecstatic with this novel. Hero Titus is an author -- squeeeeallll -- and getting a peek into his slightly crazed writer mind is so much fun! He's probably the most unique hero I've ever met and the banter between Jane and Titus still has me smiling. "He really was fun to spar with, and he didn't seem to mind her sarcasm at all. It bounced off his optimism with the ease of rain off an umbrella." (p 44)

Despite the short word count (123 pages), Basham delivers a riveting plot filled with drama and romance and lots and lots of laughter. And a genealogical mystery to solve! And -- surprise -- there's even a Christmas component to this story! "Milkshakes, mystery and kisses from Jane Cecily? Merry early Christmas to him!" (p 88) And to happy readers everywhere. Seriously good and not to be missed!

"God created romance. It makes sense that people who write from a Christian worldview would incorporate it into their books and show the God-given beauty of the love between a man and a woman." (p 67)

Arctic Witness

GIVEAWAY

WOODHAVEN, HEATHER
ARCTIC WITNESS

A killer on the hunt...and a woman and a child to protect.

When his ex-wife goes missing in the wilderness, Alaska State Trooper Sean West and his K-9 partner rescue her from a kidnapper. But survivalist expert Ivy West saw the face of a murderer and now she and her foster child are targets. Now Sean must protect them and confront what drove him and Ivy apart...or risk losing the family he never thought he wanted.

Alaska K-9 Unit

My Review:

First off -- that cover just pops! That's Grace, a Japanese Akita Inu and little Dylan. They make a great pair, don't they? If only the grownups could get their act together they would all make the perfect family!

A reunion romance that deals with the gritty aftermath of disappointment. An edge-of-your-seat suspense that plunges characters and readers into the Alaskan wilderness on a perilous mission. Lots of lovely tension, plenty of action and K-9 team support make this sixth installment in the Alaska K-9 Unit continuity series as unputdownable as all the rest.

(As with all the books in this series, there's an over-arcing suspense thread that plays out through each book as well as a fully resolved mystery and romance unique to each story. So readers get the thrill of closure as well as the tantalizing tease of an ongoing case. Each book can be read as a standalone.)

The Chase

GIVEAWAY

HARRIS, LISA
THE CHASE

Failure isn't an option

US Marshal Madison James may not be sure who shot her three months ago, but she does know one thing -- it's time to get back out into the field. When her partner, Jonas Quinn, receives a message that a federal warrant just came in on a man connected to a string of bank robberies, Madison jumps at the chance to get back to work. What she and Jonas find is a bank robbery gone wrong -- and things are about to get complicated.

For these bank robbers, it's never been about the money. It's about taking risks and adrenaline rushes, and getting caught is not part of the game. When the suspects escape, Madison and Jonas must hunt them down and bring them to justice before someone else -- someone close to them -- gets hurt...or worse.

My Review:

This second US Marshals book is just as high-octane a read as the first one! Edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting perfection, with a little left undone to tease readers for the grand finale to come in book three. So -- what you need to know about The Chase before diving in

Yes, it's the second book in a series that has an over-arcing secondary suspense thread that isn't resolved yet BUT it also has a main suspense plot that does find resolution by the end. And the author does a great job of catching readers up on the pertinent details from The Escape though reading this book will spoil the first book's cliffhanger ending for you, so just keep that in mind if you choose to read them out of order.

Madison and Jonas are on another hair-raising pursuit and I love the way Harris includes interesting procedural details along with the gasp-out-loud action moments. Adds so much to the intrigue of the chase.

I also love the slow-burn romance that isn't going to come to fruition until the final book in the series. They are friends and co-workers nudging their way closer towards a deeper relation and I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the Hallelujah moment!

I'm not sure how I'm going to survive until April 2022 when The Catch release! (And don't you just love the terse action titles for this series...escape...chase...catch. Deliciously edgy.)

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

This giveaway is for a paperback or ebook copy -- winner's choice.

Carved in Stone

GIVEAWAY

CAMDEN, ELIZABETH
CARVED IN STONE

Gwen Kellerman is an heiress to the infamous Blackstone family, whose history of scandal nearly destroyed her. She now lives a quiet life at the idyllic college founded with her family's fortune and hopes to keep the tragedies of her past safely behind her.

Patrick O'Neill survived a hardscrabble youth to become a lawyer for the downtrodden Irish immigrants in his community. He's proud of his work, even though he struggles to afford his ramshackle law office. All that changes when he accepts a case to challenge the Blackstones' legacy of greed and corruptions by resurrecting a thirty-year-old mystery.

Little does Patrick suspect that the Blackstones will launch their most sympathetic family member to derail him. Gwen is tasked with getting Patrick to drop the case, but the old mystery takes a shocking twist neither of them saw coming. Now, as they navigate a burgeoning attraction, Patrick is the only one who can save Gwen from new danger on the horizon.

My Review:

Prepare to settle in and be dazzled by the depth and breadth of this stunning historical novel. Camden always delivers exquisite research and creates the most amazing maverick heroines and she doesn't disappoint in this page-turning marvel.

Loved Gwen right from the start. She's a survivor. A woman of depth who hasn't allowed the hardships she's endured to turn into bitterness. She's brimming with life and intelligence and is so much more than a 'Blackstone heiress.' And she can hold her own with her imposing relatives.

Patrick appreciates all those qualities and revels in the alluring woman who is, essentially, his opposition. They are on different sides of a legal issue and from vastly different social classes for starters, and yet, there is something so intensely right about Patrick and Gwen as a couple. Their romance is fraught with complications and turmoil but it's pure magic too. Deep friendship and toe-curls -- my kind of romance!

And then there's the mystery -- a twisty-turny, conniving bit of intrigue and danger that turns an already complicated plot into a stunner of a rabid read.

Perhaps, best of all, is the intrinsic way the author has woven an inspirational thread throughout the entire story. Patrick in particular humbled me with the way he lives out his deeply rooted faith.

I was both excited and sad to reach the end of Carved in Stone (wonderful title tie-in, by the way.) Excited because we all got closure and a happily every after but sad because I had to say goodbye. I do so hate to be cut off from the characters I've grown to love. But, there's good news too -- definitely a reason to happy dance -- because this is the first book in Camden's Blackstone Legacy series which means I'll get to travel back to 1900 New York City again sometime in my reading future. Yay!

Colors of Christmas

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!

NEWPORT, OLIVIA,
COLORS OF CHRISTMAS

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 NIV

Christmas in Gold

When eighty-year-old Astrid moves into an assisted living community and meets Carly, a young woman on the bring of despair, she resolves to stir up Christmas hope. Can she reach into loss and rescue Christmas -- and a golden future -- one more time?

Christmas in Blue

Angela just wants Christmas to be over. Instead, she finds herself in charge of the town's celebration. Everything goes from bad to worse until garish blue decorations are all she has to work with, and her own blue spirit is not much help. Can she rescue Christmas for the town -- and herself?

My Review:

published in 2017

A stirring duet of Christmas hope.

Both stories start out with a melancholy air as our two heroines face challenging circumstances. Both are a bit reluctant over the upcoming holidays as they grapple with life changes. It's when they manage to look beyond their own situations that the Christmas magic starts to happen.

In Christmas In Gold, Astrid is recovering from a fall and newly moved into an assisted living community. The adjustment isn't easy and brings up difficult memories from her past. Her backstory is heartbreaking and inspiring. Loved slipping back in time with her! But it's her present day resolve to reach out to a young women in need that sparks vitality back into her life. Astrid is an example of how the Lord can use us no matter our age or circumstance.

In Christmas in Blue, Angela is reluctantly dragging her heels into the holiday season after suffering a personal loss. She just wants to get Christmas over and done with. Blink and have it Jan 1 so she can breathe a sigh of relief. And then she's drafted into organizing the town's annual (and much loved) Christmas celebration. Bah humbug! She's going through the motions, facing one disaster after another until a visiting stranger and a multiple of unlikely helpers create the most magical Christmas ever.

Two heartwarming and soul-cheering Christmas novellas.
