PHILLIPS, LISA
SANCTUARY LOST

U.S. Marshal John Mason gains full custody of his son and is transferred to Sanctuary, a witness protection town that isn't on any map. When the town's first ever murder occurs, John's plans to reconnect with his boy are derailed by the investigation.

Andra Caleri gave up her old life a long time ago, but someone wants her out of Sanctuary -- to pay. As accusations fly and John uncovers a conspiracy that stretches all the way to Washington, Andra's past comes back in a true test of the mercy she received. Can John give up what he wants the most to bring the truth to light?

My Review:

published in 2014

However unlikely the idea of an entire WITSEC community hidden away in a nearly unreachable valley, I found myself drawn into the concept and enjoyed my first Sanctuary adventure.

Though, fair warning it's super edgy, including some graphic violence, so this suspense might not be for everyone. More for readers who like a little grit with their mysteries. And I had a hard time relating to the heroine's past -- let's just say my understanding of mercy and forgiveness was stretched to capacity...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. :-)

Love the way we are introduced to the town through the eyes of the new sheriff and his young son. I can see all kinds of potential for future novels -- both in the romance and the suspense department. Looking forward to reading more. Well, listening to more since I bought the audible version. :-)

Desert Rescue

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DESERT RESCUE

With his K-9's help, can he save the son he didn't know existed?

Rescuing a kidnapped child is part of the job for search-and-rescue K-9 handler Patrick Sanders - but this time it's his son. Now Patrick and his furry partner must work with his high school love, Jennie Wilcox, to shield the little boy he just learned about. But with someone targeting them, will Patrick and Jennie survive to face their painful past and become a family?

My Review:

I think this is my first book featuring an Airedale terrier, and isn't our furry hero a stunning specimen? An interesting choice for a K-9 partner as well. I did a little digging based on a snippet from the story (I'm kinda book nerdy like that) and discovered that Airedales were introduced to police work in Glasgow in the early 1900s. Who knew? I'd always assumed that terriers wouldn't have the discipline for K-9 work but Tucker is a great example of terrier tenacity with just  enough quirks to keep things interesting. :-)

Phillips has created another heart-stopping, adrenaline-rush of a read with plenty of action and not a small amount of emotional trauma. Hello, secret baby trope, which I'm not a huge fan of BUT this one is done really well. Jennie's backstory drew me in and, while I felt for Patrick's missing out on the early years of parenthood, I still felt compassion for Jennie. (I'm always worried a heroine will come across as selfish and heartless for keeping the father in the dark. )

An emotional roller-coaster reunion romance paired with hair-raising suspense made Desert Rescue a page-turning delight.

I listened to the audible edition, narrated by Tim Paige. I usually prefer a female narrator -- I have an issue with the way male voice artist's shift their voice for the female roles...kinda makes me want to giggle -- like I'm listening to a comedy skit and waiting for the punchline. I know, I'm strange but I did enjoy Paige's performance and happily compulsive-listened to the end. :-)

Colorado Manhunt

GIVEAWAY
PHILLIPS, LISA
NIGHT, JENNA
COLORADO MANHUNT

Two stories of fugitives on the lam...and danger in the mountain wilderness.

In Wilderness Chase by Lisa Phillips, US marshal Noah Trent will do anything to protect key witness Amy Sanders when the brother she testified against escapes from prison and comes after her in the Rocky Mountains. And in Jenna Night's Twin Pursuit, bounty hunter Lauren Dillard must battle the mountain elements and trained killers when she mistakenly tracks her target's twin brother, Jason Cortez.

My Review:

Eeep!! Two edge-of-your seat romantic suspense novellas in one book! How exciting is that? Love the manhunt theme that links these two stories. Lots of scope for breath-snatching excitement!

Lisa Phillip's Wilderness Chase is a fast and furious and desperate game of cat and mouse. Tons of action and quite a bit of violence make this novella non-stop hair-raising! This is a kind of reunion romance, since Noah and Amy had developed the beginnings of a relationship when she first entered the witness protection program. Loved the way they worked as a team to defeat the uber bad guys' relentless pursuit. Note to self: never tick off a cartel. :-)

Absolutely love the role reversal in Jenna Night's Twin Pursuit! Lauren is a kick-butt bounty hunter while Jason is a mild mannered rancher. Well, okay, calling this ex-military need-to-be-in-control hero mild-manner might be a bit of a stretch. :-)  What a great first meet! Trying to sort out mistaken identity under a hail of bullets! There's a constant nervously-checking-over-your-shoulder vibe to this page-turner of a novella. Night packs a lot into the shorter word count but the story feels complete just the same.

Two compelling romantic suspense novellas by superb authors makes Colorado Manhunt a not-to-be-missed read.

My thanks to Jenna Night for providing me with a copy of this book.

Defense Breach

GIVEAWAY
PHILLIPS, LISA
DEFENSE BREACH

When one of their own is targeted, the Secret Service Agents must protect her

Counting the days unitl she's officially an agent, Secret Service trainee Skylar Austin is blindsided when she's nearly killed during a training exercise at the White House. Veteran agent Grady Farrow recognizes a dead-seriousness threat when he sees one. Someone is gunning for the pretty young rookie. But if they want to get to Skylar, they'll have to go through Grady first.

My Review:

Phew! I feel like I've been tossed upside down into Alice's rabbit hole and confronted by all her curiosities at once! My mind is still spinning as I contemplate how things got 'curioser and curioser' the more I delved into Defense Breach. You definitely need your wits about you for this mind-spinning read. I'm suffering from an acute case of reader whiplash from trying to keep up with every nefarious twist. And don't get me started on the multilayered suspense. Is it really a training exercise? Or is something more sinister going on? Lots of tension, plenty of action. A Sydney Bristow (Alias) kind of heroine and the agent that tries to keep up! Lots of page-turning goodness.

Dead End

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DEAD END

Cold case investigation

Nina Holmes won't rest until she finds her mother's killer -- and prove that her father was wrongly convicted. And now that she's left the CIA she finally has time to pursue the case that shattered her childhood. But someone realizes that Nina's digging into the past and soon it's her own life that's in jeopardy. Deputy US Marshall Wyatt Ames is just as determined to keep Nina safe as he is to keep investigating. But as he helps her with the case, they discover that the killer may be even more dangerous than anyone expected. And to capture him, Wyatt and Nina must be willing to do whatever it takes -- even use themselves as bait.

My Review:

You can take the girl out of the CIA but you can't take the CIA out of the girl! Nina has the necessary talents to conduct her own investigation on her mother's murder. And that makes someone uneasy...and more than a little bloodthirsty. This book has it all -- a complex plot, fast-paced action and the thrill of a mystery that turns out to be so much more than it first appears.

Oh, and the romance? Well, Nina might be smitten if she can look past Wyatt's propensity to be a "stubborn, immovable rock." (p 91) And Wyatt's definitely attracted to this ex-spy. How could he not be when "Nina had that sweet PTA-mom look about her while still knowing how to kill a man twice her size with her thumb. It was kind of irresistible." (p 119) And yes, there's evidence of that droll humour throughout the story. A stellar romantic suspense that will keep you glued to the page until you reach the end.

Manhunt

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
MANHUNT

Chasing Justice

A daring escape by a dangerous fugitive puts US marshals Eric Montgomery and Hailey Shelder's careers on the line. With the criminal vowing revenge, Eric feels duty bound to protect his risk-taking partner. He doesn't agree with her methods, but he's drawn to the single mom who wants to prove she can make it in a demanding job. When her daughter is almost kidnapped, Eric and Hailey go from uneasy partners to a true team. But with floodwaters threatening the town and a killer on the loose, can their newfound trust survive the final showdown that awaits them?

My Review:

I read Manhunt all cozied up in my house during a torrential downpour which created quite the ambiance, let me tell you! I think my fingers were shriveled by the time I reached the end. Hunting down fugitives is a tough enough job without having to add a flood warning into the mix. I think poor Hailey and Eric spent more time sopping wet then they did dry on this manhunt.

Phillips creates a dubious start to this romance. Hailey and Eric barely tolerate each other. Eric is a reluctant transfer from WITSEC. Hailey is determined to prove herself in a male-dominated environment. They're not so much partners as two individuals with personal agendas who just happen to work together. Still, there's a glimmer of a spark between the two that gives a reader hope.

And then a prisoner transfer goes wrong and the two are thrust into a manhunt of epic proportions as they battle the elements to catch the criminal before he can do more damage. A sink or swim situation -- learn to trust each other and work together or let murderous mayhem reign. Eric has to learn to live in the moment and accept what happened in the past so he can be at peace with his present. Hailey has to learn to let go and to put her faith in others. Neither makes those changes gracefully and that makes a riveting (and often frustrating) read. Honestly I wanted to bash their heads together more than a few times. There's nothing worse than a stubborn US marshal...unless it is two stubborn US marshals!

Intense. Action-packed. Emotion-laden. Really good read.

Star Witness

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
STAR WITNESS

She thought she was safe...

Mackenzie Winters spent years building a life in Witness Protection, but when someone shoots at her, she fears her cover has been blown. Could the brother of the drug lord she put away be here for revenge? Mackenzie must rely on her handler's twin, world-weary Delta Force soldier Aaron Hanning, to protect her. Aaron doesn't want to be anyone's hero, but he can't let this brave woman die. Now, with danger stalking them, they'll have to make a daring choice that means life or death—for them both.

My Review:

You might want to set a timer to remind yourself to breathe every so often before you start reading Star Witness. And try not to blink -- you might miss something important. :-) This is Phillips's second book and it is just as intense as her first. And bonus -- fans of her debut novel, Double Agent, will be thrilled to discover that Doug and Sabine take on prominent secondary roles in this book. Rife with danger and action, Mackenzie and Aaron can't seem to keep ahead of the mercenaries that want her dead. Their tenuous romance barely has time to flicker to life as they dodge bullets and countless perils. Another compelling romantic suspense from an author who is making a name for herself in this popular genre.

Double Agent

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DOUBLE AGENT

Danger is her alias.

As a spy, Sabine Laduca works alone. But when she investigates her brother's murder, she's forced into an uneasy alliance with his Delta Force team leader. The CIA taught Sabine to trust no one, and Sergeant Major Doug Richardson is no exception. The handsome soldier hides his own secrets, but nothing will stop Sabine from finding out who killed her brother. Not even when the CIA declares her rogue. Now not only is the killer after her, so is the agency. For the first time, she needs someone—Doug. Because only he can help her find the truth…and only he can keep her safe….

My Review:

Complex plot riddled with treachery at every turn. The wickedly fast-paced delivery left me breathless. Larger than life characters explode off the page like a great suspense show. Has an Alias vibe to it, if you're familiar with the now defunct television series. Very refreshing and completely different from any Love Inspired Suspense I have ever read.
