A Welcome at Our Door

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!

CLIPSTON, AMY
A WELCOME AT OUR DOOR

After a devastating loss, Cindy Riehl is still searching for peace. Will she find it in the community she calls home -- or will love send her down a new path?

Over the last few years, Cindy Riehl -- the youngest of the Riehl children -- has watched her siblings find love and happiness in Lancaster County. But as her family has settled down and grown, Cindy has continued to grieve her mother, whose death left an enormous hole in her heart. Since that haunting day, Cindy has sturggled to find peace and wonders if the community is the place for her -- and if her faith in God will ever feel the same as it once did.

When a handsome and kind Englisher named Drew crosses Cindy's path one surprising day, the two of them become fast and easy friends. Drew dreams of starting a family after some losses of his own, and before long, he and Cindy discover that their feelings for each other are romantic. As they spend more time together -- often in secret -- Cindy is drawn further and further away from the Amish community and the family she loves. In time, she faced with a difficult choice that threatens to upend her world.

Will Cindy find contentment and love, and will she ever find restored comfort in God and her beloved community? In this final installment of the Amish Homestead series, we return to the charming town of Bird-in Hand for a story of healing, family, and God's perfect provision.

My Review:

published in 2019

I'm having fun doing a major catch up on Amy Clipston novels while trying to keep current with her multiple new releases this year so I don't get behind again. Oh, the bibliophile anxiety when must-reads books overwhelm my TBR pile! But the plus side is I have lots of happy reading hours ahead for me!

I love the way this author brings depth and heart to her characters and their struggles. I was so invested in Cindy's story that I had a lump in my throat for most of the read. She's been adrift in her grief over the death of her mother for much too long and she feels like no one in her family or close knit community understands.

And then Englischer Drew moves in next door and her world is turned upside down all over again. Because Drew gets her and their undeniable connection feels like a lifeline. It isn't long before friendship heats up into something much deeper and that presents a whole new set of challenges.

Honestly, heart in throat the whole read through. Talk about doomed romance! I could not figure out how the author was going to work out a happily ever after. Thankfully she does, but there are so many twists and turns and gut-wrenching decisions to be made along the way! This story consumed me and left me emotionally shell-shocked by the end. Which makes me a very happy reader. :-)

Sanctuary Buried. Yipee!
That's a great head start on diving
into a new-to-you series cause this is a
RETRO READ DAY!

PHILLIPS, LISA
SANCTUARY LOST

U.S. Marshal John Mason gains full custody of his son and is transferred to Sanctuary, a witness protection town that isn't on any map. When the town's first ever murder occurs, John's plans to reconnect with his boy are derailed by the investigation.

Andra Caleri gave up her old life a long time ago, but someone wants her out of Sanctuary -- to pay. As accusations fly and John uncovers a conspiracy that stretches all the way to Washington, Andra's past comes back in a true test of the mercy she received. Can John give up what he wants the most to bring the truth to light?

My Review:

published in 2014

However unlikely the idea of an entire WITSEC community hidden away in a nearly unreachable valley, I found myself drawn into the concept and enjoyed my first Sanctuary adventure.

Though, fair warning it's super edgy, including some graphic violence, so this suspense might not be for everyone. More for readers who like a little grit with their mysteries. And I had a hard time relating to the heroine's past -- let's just say my understanding of mercy and forgiveness was stretched to capacity...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. :-)

Love the way we are introduced to the town through the eyes of the new sheriff and his young son. I can see all kinds of potential for future novels -- both in the romance and the suspense department. Looking forward to reading more. Well, listening to more since I bought the audible version. :-)

The Gem Thief

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY

BESSEY, SEAN ANN
THE GEM THIEF

Gracie Miller is a small-town girl who has landed her dream job in New York City. As jewelry designer for one of the most prestigious jewelers in the world, she completed a particularly stunning piece, a custom setting for a large pink diamond. But when her billionaire client Mrs. Katsaros comes to repair a minor issue with the setting, Gracie is horrified to realize it is not the ring she created. Someone has forged her design, and the priceless diamond is gone.

Mrs. Katsaros has no desire to bring media attention to the jewelry heist, so she recruits her nephew, Quinn, and his FBI friend, Steve, to do some sleuthing off the record. When they discover that the missing ring is just one of many forgeries in the widow's collection, they look to Gracie for help. They need her to act the part of Quinn's fiancee.

From the lights of New York to the shimmering islands of the Mediterranean, Gracie is swept into a thrilling hunt. But amid the search for the elusive thief, she and Quinn find themselves increasingly distracted by their growing feelings for each other. What neither realizes is how close the danger lies and how serious the vendetta is -- because, apparently, it is worth killing for.

My Review:

published in 2018

Well, this was a treat of a mystery wrapped up in romantical bliss! Absolutely loved the exotic Mediterranean setting. I don't think I've read anything quite like it. Bessey does an amazing job of making a reader feel like she's been on a cruise too so if you like to armchair travel, this is definitely a book that will interest you.

The mystery is unique, as is Gracie's occupation. It boggles the mind that people actually pay those exorbitant prices for jewelry but I loved reading about the artistry Gracie brings to her crafting. And then there is the jet-setting chase to catch a thief!

But what I love most about The Gem Thief is that it is unapologetically romantic. Quinn and Gracie kept my toes in permanent curl mode from their first rocky meeting right through to the swoon-inducing conclusion. I'm still in a giddy euphoric state basking in the afterglow of their love story.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Aubrey Warner who did a great job of showcasing these characters and their compelling story.

Please note: while not a Christian Fiction selection, this book is a page-turning clean read. :-)

Falling for the Innkeeper

GIVEAWAY

WHISTLER, MEGHANN
FALLING FOR THE INNKEEPER

A battle for a charming Cape Cod Inn...but what happens when romance checks in?

Single mom Laura Lessoway won't accept her mother's plan of selling her late grandmother's inn without a fight. But when big-city attorney Jonathan Masters arrives to arrange an offer from his client, she's drawn to him. And working together as he helps with repairs only brings them closer. With his career and her home on the line, can they ever find common ground?

My Review:

Woohoo! What an absolutely stellar debut novel! From the Cape Cod setting to the banter to the adorable tutu sporting preschooler who steals every single scene she's in...well this is just a whole lot of awesomesauce any way you look at it.

Laura and Jonathan are on an endgame collision course. She's all about holding on to a family legacy and passing down traditions to her daughter. That means she wants to keep running the inn. Jonathan is her worst nightmare -- the lawyer tasked with closing the sale of the inn.

He's all about climbing up the corporate ladder in order to prove his success. Both are driven by the need to conquer their pasts even while they are drawn to each other. But how can two people with such opposite goals find common ground? With the help of one Yankee Doodle warbling cherub for starts.

This one had me giggling and swooning and happy dancing all the way to end.

You Belong With Me

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY

FARIS, TARI
YOU BELONG WITH ME

Realtor Hannah Thornton has many talents. Unfortunately, selling houses isn't one of them.

When a business tycoon determines to raze historic homes in the small town of Heritage, Michigan, and replace them with a strip mall, Hannah resolves to stop him. She sets about helping Heritage win a restoration grant that will put the town back on the map -- and hopefully restore her disgraced family name. But she'll need help to to it.

As a foster kid, Luke Johnson never truly felt he belonged. Now he has a chance to earn his place in his hometown. But he doesn't anticipate how his relationship with Hannah will set into motion events that reveal the truth about who he is -- and who he was.

My Review:

Oh my wounded heart! What an emotionally angst-riddled debut novel with not one, but two rocky romances to navigate through. And Hannah just happens to be in the middle of it all. I can so relate to her resistance to change! In the midst of never ending changes! My tummy was in a maelstrom of knots in sympathy for her. :-) Talk about feeling your way through a story...this one is as tactile as they come.

Love the small town vibe and the the smorgasbord of secondary characters (including the four legged variety) that come with it. More angst along with sage wisdom like this courtesy of Aunt Lucy:

"You can never really fix something shattered. But you can take the pieces and make something even better. Don't leave the painful parts of your life in a box on the shelf. Figure out how to make something beautiful out of them." (p 275)

And that's just what these characters do as they struggle to let go of past hurts and come to grips with their present while looking forward to the kind of future only God can lead them to.

The Kissing Tree

GIVEAWAY

JENNINGS, REGINA
WITEMEYER, KAREN
DYKES, AMANDA
DEESE, NICOLE
THE KISSING TREE

In this Texas-sized romance novella collection, courting couples, decades apart, leave a permanent mark of their love by carving their initials into the same oak's bark.

In Regina Jennings' Broken Limbs, Mended Fences, a small-town teacher has her credentials questioned by a traveling salesman.

In Karen Witemeyer's Inn for a Surprise, two opinionated collaborators with conflicting visions must turn a doomed business venture into a successful romantic retreat.

From Roots to Sky by Amanda Dykes follows a young WWII naval airman who heads to Texas to meet the sister of a lost compatriot.

Heartwood by Nicole Deese is a modern-day romance about the groundskeeper of a historic inn who's reunited with someone from her past while she fights to save the town landmark.

My Review:

Unique voices linked together by a common theme make this a stunning novella collection. Absolutely love the generational aspect where the kissing tree is highlighted throughout the ages. And i also love the way the first and last novellas bookend the collection. Giggles to start and a tear or two shed at the end. :-) Brilliantly done.

Broken Limbs, Mended by Regina Jennings -- Has a great comedic start and that thread of humour is woven throughout the inevitable angst as the hero and heroine find themselves on opposing sides of an impossible challenge. A nice mix of love and laughter with a few toe-curls on the side.

Inn for a Surprise by Karen Witemeyer -- That great play of words in the title promises exactly what this novella delivers. Readers will be 'in for a surprise' over just how much fun and swoony-ness the author packs in a concise word count. Barnabas and Phoebe's story of practicality versus romance thrilled me to my toes.

From Roots to Sky by Amanda Dykes -- Lyrically exquisite. Such a tender, moving love story spiked with humour and that desperate yearning we all have to belong.

Heartwood by Nicole Dees -- Sniffle. I'm still misty eyed now that it's all over and Dees closes things out with a heart-thudding, tummy-swirling reunion romance that has me happy/sad sighing.

The Farm Stand

GIVEAWAY

CLIPSTON, AMY
THE FARM STAND

Salina Petersheim runs her own produce booth at the Amish market and has been dating Josiah for almost a year now. Her religious parents approve of community member Josiah, but to Salina, he feels more like a friend than a boyfriend. Then Will Zimmerman, a Mennonite chef who runs a local restaurant, comes along. He wants Salina to supply the produce for his restaurant, and as they forge a business relationship, they find themselves falling in love -- even as they feel stuck in their current relationships. Will they follow their hearts or bow to the pressure of family? Or will God provide a surprising new road for them?

An Amish Marketplace Novel

My Review:

Mercy, but I'm having a hard time keeping up with all of Amy Clipston's releases so I'm leaping into her Amish Marketplace series mid-stride.

The Farm Stand is book two and it reads wunderbaar well as a standalone, once you get the cousins straight. :-) The series centers around four cousins who all have stalls in an Amish market and there's a great sisterly connection that shines through in this book (and I'm guessing all the others.) Love the teasing and heartfelt talks...even the tough love ones. :-) These four cousins make a great support network and this time round it's Salina who needs it most.

I'm usually not fond of romances where one (or both) of the protagonists are already in a relationship but I am completely enamored with Salina and Will's story despite the fact that they are both dating other people. Clipston does a great job of portraying their circumstances in a compassionate light and I found myself totally fascinated as their drama unfolds!

And the angst is plentiful -- but it's also accompanied with enough lighthearted moments to strike a delicious balance. As well as the tummy-flipping excitement that comes with discovering true love! The perfect escape read for these long, COVID riddled wintry days!

Amish Secrets

GIVEAWAY

PERRY, MARTA
AMISH SECRETS

Rachel Hurst sacrificed the life she wanted to stay home and care for her father and siblings after her mother's death. But now her father had decided to remarry, and there's no room for Rachel. Desperate to find a job, she accepts the position of housekeeper for a wealthy elderly woman in her isolated mansion.

Jacob Beiler thought he had gotten over Rachel's rejection, but when she arrives as the new housekeeper, he is battered by both joy and bitterness at seeing her again.

When odd near accidents threaten the elderly woman's well-being, her relatives are quick to point fingers, but Rachel suspects someone is intent on harming her employer. When no one believes her, the only person she can turn to for help is Jacob. With danger deepening, Rachel faces a situation that could cost her life...and will certainly break her art once again.

My Review:

Marta Perry has become one of my go-to authors whether it's mystery or Amish but when the two are combined? Oh, happy, happy days, I kick up my heels and high step a celebratory jig!!!!

Amish Secrets is a more subtle mystery than others I've read by this author but it's atmospheric all the same. And just as compelling when you add in all the emotional angst and exasperating secondary character hijinks. Plus there's a wee bit of eerie courtesy of the mysterious goings on in the isolated mansion. (Cue soft, creepy background music to set the right reading mood.)

Rachel and Jacob are about as exasperating a pair of reunion lovers as you'll ever meet in the pages of a book. :-) The abrupt end to their youthful courtship has left some residual resentment and suddenly they find themselves working together to support a crotchety old lady and her displaced grand-niece. Oh my, but these two clash and battle and nurse old wounds to the bitter end. It was fun to watch the sparring punctuated by unwary lapses into long forgotten friendship. That's when sparks fly and teasing camaraderie blossoms.

A compelling mystery romance by a favoured author.

Stories That Bind Us

GIVEAWAY

FINKBEINER, SUSIE
STORIES THAT BIND US

Betty Sweet never expected to be a widow at 40. With so much life still in front of her, she tries to figure out what's next. She couldn't have imagined what God had in mind. When her estranged sister is committed to a sanitarium, Betty finds herself taking on the care of a 5-year-old nephew she never knew she had.

In 1960s LaFontaine, Michigan, they make an odd pair. Betty with her pink button nose and bouffant hair. Hugo with his light brown skin and large brown eyes. But more powerful than what makes them different is what they share: the heartache of an empty space in their lives. Slowly, they will learn to trust one another as they discover common ground and healing through the magic of storytelling.

Award-winning author Susie Finkbeiner offers fans a novel that invites us to rediscover the power of story to open the doors of our hearts.

My Review:

Well, now, that was just...unexpected. I honestly didn't know what I was getting into when I began reading (er, listening.) This book hadn't even been on my radar until it was mentioned during a Reader's Choice Week and my hearty thanks to those of you who brought it to my attention! Because...wow!

What a sweet, gentle, moving story! Deeply layered in love of both the heavenly and earthly kind and all the complications and joys that brings. I deeply grieved for Betty's husband thanks to the power of Finkbeiner's words. And though this is a story about grief (and so much more besides!), it wasn't cloying or depressing, I felt sorrow but I also felt joy and took solace in Betty's stories -- both the ones she made up and the ones she remembered.

That title -- Stories That Bind Us -- exactly sums up the heart of this novel. We are all bound by the stories we live and the people we live them with.

Tavia Gilbert's exceptional narration enriched this 'read' for me. A perfect match for Susie Finkbeiner's evocative prose. Tears and laughter and a warm feeling of belonging about sums up my feelings.

Desert Rescue

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DESERT RESCUE

With his K-9's help, can he save the son he didn't know existed?

Rescuing a kidnapped child is part of the job for search-and-rescue K-9 handler Patrick Sanders - but this time it's his son. Now Patrick and his furry partner must work with his high school love, Jennie Wilcox, to shield the little boy he just learned about. But with someone targeting them, will Patrick and Jennie survive to face their painful past and become a family?

My Review:

I think this is my first book featuring an Airedale terrier, and isn't our furry hero a stunning specimen? An interesting choice for a K-9 partner as well. I did a little digging based on a snippet from the story (I'm kinda book nerdy like that) and discovered that Airedales were introduced to police work in Glasgow in the early 1900s. Who knew? I'd always assumed that terriers wouldn't have the discipline for K-9 work but Tucker is a great example of terrier tenacity with just  enough quirks to keep things interesting. :-)

Phillips has created another heart-stopping, adrenaline-rush of a read with plenty of action and not a small amount of emotional trauma. Hello, secret baby trope, which I'm not a huge fan of BUT this one is done really well. Jennie's backstory drew me in and, while I felt for Patrick's missing out on the early years of parenthood, I still felt compassion for Jennie. (I'm always worried a heroine will come across as selfish and heartless for keeping the father in the dark. )

An emotional roller-coaster reunion romance paired with hair-raising suspense made Desert Rescue a page-turning delight.

I listened to the audible edition, narrated by Tim Paige. I usually prefer a female narrator -- I have an issue with the way male voice artist's shift their voice for the female roles...kinda makes me want to giggle -- like I'm listening to a comedy skit and waiting for the punchline. I know, I'm strange but I did enjoy Paige's performance and happily compulsive-listened to the end. :-)

Acceptable Risk

GIVEAWAY

EASON, LYNETTE
ACCEPTABLE RISK

Sarah Denning is a military journalist with the Army in the Middle East when her convoy is attacked and she's taken hostage. When former Army Ranger Gavin Black is asked by his old unit commander -- Sarah's imposing father -- to plan an extremely risky rescue, he reluctantly agrees and successfully executes it.

Back in the US, Sarah is livid when she's discharged on a false psychiatric evaluation and vows to return to the Army. Until she learns her brother's suicide.  Unable to believe her brother would do such a thing, she puts her plans on hold and enlists Gavin to help her discover the truth. What they uncover may be the biggest story of Sarah's career -- if she can survive long enough to write it.

My Review:

A gripping plot with so many twists and turns even a compass wouldn't be able to keep a reader on a straight course to the end. Complex layers that include betrayal and the worst kind of villainy kept me in speed reading mode all the way through. And all the while enchanted with the developing romance.

Sarah and Gavin had dated before...until Sarah retreated after the third date. The way Gavin patiently works his way through her reluctance (downright fear, really) showcases his gentle, tender and respectful nature. Happy toe-curling sigh. This is the kind of hero that brings life to a story. And aptly matched in grit and determination by Sarah when it comes to finding answers in their investigation.

This is the second book in Eason's Danger Never Sleeps series but it reads very well as a standalone. I actually read the books out of order, one, three and now, finally, two and had no problem. I love the camaraderie of girlfriends who bonded during their service overseas and the way they continue to have each others' backs stateside.

Another unputdownable book by one of my fave romantic suspense authors.
