A Cliche Christmas

GIVEAWAY

DEESE, NICOLE
A CLICHE CHRISTMAS

Georgia Cole -- known in Hollywood as the "Holiday Goddess" -- has made a name for herself writing heartwarming screenplays chock-full of Christmas clichés, but she has yet to experience the true magic of the season. So, when her eccentric grandmother volunteers her to direct a pageant at Georgia's hometown community theater, she is less than thrilled. To make matters worse, she'll be working alongside Weston James, her childhood crush and the one man she has tried desperately to forget.

Now, facing memories of a lonely childhood and the humiliation of her last onstage performance seven years earlier, Georgia is on the verge of a complete mistletoe meltdown. As Weston attempts to thaw the frozen walls around her heart, Georgia endeavors to let go of her fears and give love a second chance. If she does, will she finally believe that Christmas can be more than a cliché?

My Review:

Christmas in July! I thought to lower the intolerable summer temps outside by reading a cool, refreshing winter story but I didn't factor in the delectable romance. Temperatures spiked. So did my heart rate. Snowflake kisses are the best! A delectable holiday romance with heart.

Deese measures humour and angst in even doses and delivers a breathtaking love story worthy of a Hallmark movie. Just like the ones Georgia makes a living writing. Unfortunately, her real love life is the exact opposite...until her grandmother talks her into coming home for the Christmas holidays and she comes face to face with her high school sweetheart.

There is something so delicious about Weston's steady, deliberate pursuit. They aren't teenagers anymore. Older, but maybe not wiser as far as their feelings for each other are concerned. Such an exquisite love story full of  feisty fighting scenes and snow melting kisses. It isn't long before Georgia and Weston discover that Jesus can work something good out their broken lives.

No need to wait until 'tis the season to enjoy Weston and Georgia's story -- it's perfect for any time of year -- whenever you're in the mood for a toe-curling literary retreat.

Dead End

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DEAD END

Cold case investigation

Nina Holmes won't rest until she finds her mother's killer -- and prove that her father was wrongly convicted. And now that she's left the CIA she finally has time to pursue the case that shattered her childhood. But someone realizes that Nina's digging into the past and soon it's her own life that's in jeopardy. Deputy US Marshall Wyatt Ames is just as determined to keep Nina safe as he is to keep investigating. But as he helps her with the case, they discover that the killer may be even more dangerous than anyone expected. And to capture him, Wyatt and Nina must be willing to do whatever it takes -- even use themselves as bait.

My Review:

You can take the girl out of the CIA but you can't take the CIA out of the girl! Nina has the necessary talents to conduct her own investigation on her mother's murder. And that makes someone uneasy...and more than a little bloodthirsty. This book has it all -- a complex plot, fast-paced action and the thrill of a mystery that turns out to be so much more than it first appears.

Oh, and the romance? Well, Nina might be smitten if she can look past Wyatt's propensity to be a "stubborn, immovable rock." (p 91) And Wyatt's definitely attracted to this ex-spy. How could he not be when "Nina had that sweet PTA-mom look about her while still knowing how to kill a man twice her size with her thumb. It was kind of irresistible." (p 119) And yes, there's evidence of that droll humour throughout the story. A stellar romantic suspense that will keep you glued to the page until you reach the end.

Chance of Loving You

GIVEAWAY

BLACKSTOCK, TERRI
CALVERT, CANDACE
WARREN, SUSAN MAY
CHANCE OF LOVING YOU

Beloved authors Terri Blackstock, Candace Calvert, and Susan May Warren bring you three delightful stories about the risks we take for love.

For Love of Money by Terri Blackstock -- Trying to launch her own design firm while waitressing on the side, Julie Sheffield was drawn to the kind man she waited on at the restaurant last night...until he stiffed her on the tip by leaving her half of a sweepstakes ticket.

The Recipe by Candace Calvert -- Hospital dietary assistant Aimee Curran is determined to win the Vegan Valentine Bake-Off to prove she's finally found her calling. But while caring for one of her patients -- the elderly grandmother of a handsome CSI photographer -- Aimee begins to questions where she belongs.

Hook, Line & Sinker by Susan May Warren -- Grad student Abigail Cushman has agreed to enter Deep Haven's annual fishing contest. She's a quick learner, even if she doesn't know the difference between a bass and a trout. But nothing could prepare her for competing against the handsome charmer she's tried to forget since grief tore them apart.

My Review:

My heart got all skittery over this talented trio of authors. Together. In one book. Insert bibliophile swoon. How could I resist? Well, obviously I couldn't. I started reading the second the mailman popped it in my mail box. Three snappy, swoony and scrumptious romances sent me into a whirl of reader bliss.

For Love of Money by Terri Blackstock -- Oh my goodness, what a great premise for a love story. But argh...the angst. I could totally relate to Julie and her reactions. My tummy flip-flopped and I came near to hyperventilating a time or two. A whimsical love story that will leave you grinning.

The Recipe by Candace Calvert -- Funny and sweet and touching. It fits in with the Crisis Team series but you don't need to have read the books in order to enjoy this novella. Aimee's still trying to find her passion in a family of decisive over achievers. A great faith thread about following God's leading...and surprise, when Aimee does she finds her heart's desire!

Hook, Line & Sinker by Susan May Warren -- A gnarly second chance love story. And mercy, but I wanted to grab this hero and heroine by the scruffs of their necks and shake some sense into them. And then lock them in a closet until they kissed and made up. :-) The author had other plans though and I rabidly devoured this twisty-turny romance until I reached the end and could let out a great sigh of relief.

Hope in the Land

GIVEAWAY

NEWPORT, OLIVIA
HOPE IN THE LAND

When Henry Edison turns up in Lancaster County to survey farm women about their domestic contributions during the 1930s, the last thing Amish housewife Gloria Grabill has time for is the government agent's unending questions. Gloria's hands are already full with a farm to run alongside her husband, a houseful of children and extended family, and an English neighbour, Minerva Swain, who has been trying Gloria's patience for forty years. Gloria's oldest daughter, Polly, wants nothing more than the traditional path of an Amish farmer's wife, but everything she does seems to push Thomas Coblentz further away. As their lives entangle, Gloria digs deep to find the grace to see past Minerva's irritating habits to her unspoken fears, while Polly and Henry brave unforeseen shifts in their dream.

While the Great Depression shadows the country in gloom, can Amish and English neighbours in Lancaster County grasp the goodness that will sustain hope?

My Review:

This is one of those subtle kinds of stories that creeps into your heart. A hope-filled respite that left me longing for simpler days. Gloria is at the centre of it all, dispensing compassion and wisdom (most of the time) as she nurtures her brood and looks beyond the needs of her own family. Her one nemesis is Minerva and, frankly, I can totally see why! (insert the sound of nails scratching on a blackboard -- the woman is that annoying!)

I've always been fascinated by the Depression era as a historical setting though it isn't the most popular time periods for novels. The title, Hope in the Land, aptly describes how Gloria approaches life during these trying times and somehow she manages to spread that hope to those around her. And I love her counsel! "Find the calm in the storm. If you try to talk in the wind, you only end up shouting at yourself." (p.129)

Then there's Polly with her dreams of marriage though she isn't great farmwife material. City-slicker Henry, a fish out of water when he arrives in rural Lancaster County. And Minerva, the annoying English neighbor who puts on airs. Gloria touches all their lives in different ways. A gentle story of simple faith and endless hope.

Her Unexpected Family

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
HER UNEXPECTED FAMILY

A family to love

Emily Gallagher and Grant McCarthy are planning a wedding together -- just not their own. Emily's well-structured life is turned upside down when her company is hired to help Grant put together his deployed sister's nuptials. Because as Emily spends more time with Grant and his adorable twins, she can't help but daydream about being at the altar herself. But Emily's ex-beauty-queen status brings Grant memories of his children's appearance-obsessed mother -- a woman who walked out on their family. For a future with Emily, can Grant escape the confines of his painful past? If he can, the next wedding they plan could be their own...

Grace Haven: A town full of heart, happiness and home.

My Review:

We're back planning weddings in Grace Haven. This is the second book in the series and I'm thrilled to be back in the quaint New York village. Herne knows how to write small towns with heart and I always come away yearning to find a small town experience of my own. Love the wedding planner theme in this series. Three sisters running the family company. It's only natural for some of that marital bliss to rub off on the Gallagher girls.

Have to confess that the stars of this story are Timmy and Dolly. A-d-o-r-a-b-l-e. And there's something so endearing about a single dad struggling to get things right. Grant does a great job...except for a tendency to be a tad overprotective of his special needs daughter. Emily's not afraid to call him on it and, oh my, his internal righteous indignation is quite entertaining.

Emily's had to fight hard to prove there is substance behind her beauty queen status. She's made some mistakes but what I love about her is that she refuses to let them define her. She knows she is a work in progress and by the grace of God she will continue to grow. So it really irks her when Grant makes some snap judgements about her. Makes for a rocky road to romance but such a fun read. And Grant has his reasons for being wary of Emily. He hasn't recovered from past betrayals. In fact he's letting them fester and skew his present relationships. And I have to admit I was righteously indignant on his behalf and then Herne turns everything around and I'm left eating humble pie! A lesson well learned.

Faith, love and laughter -- perfect ingredients for romance.

Lethal Beauty

GIVEAWAY

Wiehl, Lis
Lethal Beauty

It should have been an open and shut murder case, but Mia Quinn finds out nothing about it is simple.

After a young Chinese prostitute is stabbed to death by her rich American client, the tabloids dub Dandan Yee "Lethal Beauty" -- despite the fact that she was the one who ended up dead. Yet even with double standards and naked prejudice working against her, Seattle prosecutor Mia Quinn is determined to get justice for Dandan Yee.

But when a key witness goes missing and an unsavory juror shuts down deliberations without explanation, Mia fears the trial -- and the law -- are being tampered with.

A constellation of fresh killings have Mia homicide detective Charles Carlson searching for a common source and puts Mia's family in the crosshairs of a Chinese crime cabal. Meanwhile, Dandan Yee's mother has opted to take matters into her own hands...and the stakes get more lethal overnight.

In the midst of all this, Mia has to contend with a fifteen-year-old son who is growing up too fast for his own good, and the idea that Charlie might want to be more than just friends. Can Mia and Charlie stop the murders and still keep her family safe? Or is the very act of seeking justice enough to cost her everything -- and everyone -- she loves?

My Review:

A legal thriller that's sure to keep you turning pages. It opens with riveting courtroom scenes that showcase Mia's talent as a prosecutor and her heart as a justice seeker. And even though a legal setting is foreign to me, Wiehl does a great job of capturing the environment without burdening the reader in technicalities. Put me in mind of Erin Reagan from the TV show Blue Bloods if that's a helpful reference for you.

I love Mia's gumption and determination to fight for what's right. She doesn't understand the meaning of the word 'quit', which leads to unexpected danger and enough intrigue to keep this armchair sleuth in a tizzy of expectation. The author approaches the topic of human trafficking with relentless honesty. I appreciate the fact that she didn't sensationalize the topic. It's real and raw but never explicit.

While there isn't a romance thread, I feel like a foundation is being laid for future books. Mia has two men waiting in the wings, though she's made it perfectly clear that she's only interested in friendship. I have a clear preference but time will tell if I'm right. And this is a good place to note that Lethal Beauty is the third book in the Mia Quinn Mysteries series. Some things carry over from book to book, especially where Mia's personal life is concerned, but the author does a fantastic job of writing in the backstory in such a way that a new-to-the-series reader won't have any problem starting with this one.

While the first books were missing an inspirational thread, this one has the beginnings of one that I think will become more profound as the series continues. Mia is a woman who likes to be in control but as things begin to unravel at an alarming rate she begins to toy with a profound thought: "But maybe that was what prayers were for, to make you realize you had no control, to make you let go of the notion that you controlled your destiny. Maybe the future was best appraoched on your knees."

Snow on the Tulips

GIVEAWAY

TOLSMA, LIZ
SNOW ON THE TULIPS

A stranger's life hangs in the balance. But save him is to risk everything.

The war is drawing to a close, but the Nazis still occupy part of the Netherlands. After the losses she's endured, war widow Cornelia is only a shadow of the woman she once was. She fights now to protect her younger brother, Johan, who lives in hiding.

When Johan brings Gerrit Laninga, a wounded Dutch Resistance member, to Cornelia's doorstep, their lives are forever altered. Although scared of the consequences of harboring a wanted man, Cornelia's faith won't let her turn him out.

As she nurses Gerrit back to health, she is drawn to his fierce passion and ideals, and notices a shift within herself. Gerrit's intensity challenges her, making her want to live fully, despite the fear that constrains her. When the opportunity to join him in the Resistance presents itself, Cornelia must summon every ounce of courage imaginable.

She is as terrified of loving Gerrit as she is of losing him. But as the winter landscapes thaws, so too does her heart. Will she get a second chance at true love? She fears their story will end before it even begins.

My Review:

Gripping from the very first sentence. There are heart-in-your-throat scenes that will leave you gasping for breath. The brutality of war -- the senseless slaughter of humanity -- all play a role as this story unfolds.

Life is fraught with danger and uncertainty during wartime and no one knows that better than Cornelia. Something died inside her the day her husband was killed by German soldiers. It's all she can do to go through the motions of living. Trying to control what is left of her shattered life, she retreats, willing to wait until the end of the war before she starts to live again. And then her brother brings home a wounded Resistance fighter.

Gerrit is motivated by a deep sense of duty and justice. A risk-taker, willing to do whatever he can to fight for his country. Recovering from a bullet wound keeps him trapped in Cornelia's home and the two are thrown together in tight quarters where their opposing views act like tinder to a flame. Yet as they battle, something else ignites -- the kind of deep feelings that are dangerous to nurture during wartime.

I love how they both grow from the challenge of their relationship. Gerrit softens a bit, leans more deeply into his faith. Cornelia struggles with her fear and I truly appreciate this part of the story. So often we read about larger than life characters who seem to be born heroes. Cornelia is just plain scared and yet she is willing to follow where her faith leads.

A captivating, page-turner of a read.

A Haven on Orchard Lane

GIVEAWAY

BLACKWELL, LAWANA
A HAVEN ON ORCHARD LANE

An urgent escape...a wonderful heart...will Charlotte find the solace she longs for at the cottage on Orchard Lane?

Famed Actress Charlotte Ward stepped away from the Victorian London stage five years ago. Now in desperate circumstances, she tries to restart her career -- only to experience a complete collapse. Against her better judgment, Charlotte's estranged daughter, Rosalind, comes to her mother's rescue and moves her to a quiet English coastal village where her mother can evade the gossip columnists at least for a time.

Charlotte is grateful to re-establish even tenuous family ties with Rosalind. As one with regrets over her own romantic past, she's happy to see love blossom for her daughter. For Rosalind, however, it's time away from teaching, and now she must care for the mother who wasn't here for her. And what could possibly be more complicated than romance?

But there can be no permanent escape from the threats of recent months. As the privacy they seek is threatened, mother and daughter must make some difficult decisions -- ones that jeopardize those they care about most.

My Review:

I felt like weeping when I reached the last page! I so didn't want this read to be over. I just wasn't prepared to return to 21st century Canada any time soon. I'm still crashing in a major disgruntled sulk but I'll try to rally for the sake of the review.

This book isn't anything like I thought it would be. Don't you just love it when a novel surprises you in that kind of knock-your-socks off way? It's told from multiple points of view, though Charlotte and her daughter, Rosalind,  play major roles in everything that happens. It's like the house they rent on Orchard Lane becomes the crossroads for various characters. Lives collide and magic happens and Charlotte is at the helm. And I didn't expect that from her. Not after making her acquaintance in chapter one. But there's such a depth of spiritual wisdom and common sense hidden inside that woman -- I think she even surprises herself!

An estranged mother/daughter relationship has the chance at redemption -- a stirring tale all on its own. But this story isn't without a romance. A delicious. tentative, genteel one that develops from an unorthodox first meeting.  And be still my heart, the ladies of Orchard Lane are readers! It isn't long before Charlotte and Rosalind become enmeshed in the lives of some of the villagers. I fell in love with all the secondary characters -- a pair of raggedy brothers in particular. This is definitely a story about relationship and how we can shine the light of Christ through our actions.

An impactful novel that entertains as well as inspires.

A Hasty Betrothal

GIVEAWAY

NELSON, JESSICA
A HASTY BETROTHAL

A practical proposal

Though Lady Elizabeth Wayland would rather spend her days with her bellowed books than an uncaring spouse, scandal forces her to find a match posthaste. To escape the scoundrel who almost ruined her, Elizabeth accepts an unconventional proposal from a childhood friend. But when she finds herself falling for her husband-to-be, will she be able to convince him to return her love?

Widowed cotton mill owner Miles Hawthorne vowed to never marry again -- until Elizabeth's reputation is on the line. Their betrothal begins as a simple favor. As he spends more time with his fiancée, though, Miles finds that there's more to her than he ever saw before. And Elizabeth just might be the only woman who can slip into his heart.

My Review:

Squeeeeaaaalllllllll!!!! A bibliophile heroine in Regency England -- can it get any better than that? Never mind the hero, I was swooning over Elizabeth's love of reading! "I simply want you to understand the great scope of stories. Their extraordinary ability to draw out the imagination, to teach life lessons and to inspire one to greater heights of creativity." (p 188) Yes! I love Elizabeth! Even though she finds it "very exhausting to be the heroine of her own story." (p. 279) I personally found it exhilarating! :-)  I seriously got all swoony over the book references.

Mind you, Miles made me weak in the knees too. He could be gallant and charming one minute and brooding and distant the next. What a complicated man -- but -- oh my goodness, he has a tender heart, especially where Elizabeth is concerned. Though he can be a dunderhead about her as well. He's pegged her a certain way so she discombobulates him at every turn. Just when he gets his balance she lambasts him with something else. So much fun keeping up with their banter -- like watching a tennis match! Back and forth. Back and forth. Witty and riveting.

Stupendous fun -- a Regency romance not to be missed!

Together at the Table

GIVEAWAY

LODGE, HILLARY MANTON
TOGETHER AT THE TABLE

Three months ago, Juliette D'Alisa's world changed.

In a bittersweet series of events, her mother's health took a turn for the worse. Juliette and her brother opened their restaurant together to rave reviews, but her romance with Memphis immunologist Neil McLaren ended in anger and tears.

Now as autumn sweeps into the Pacific Northwest, Juliette feels that she's finally on the cusp of equilibrium. The restaurant continues to thrive, and her family is closer than ever. She and sous-chef Adrian are seeing each other, both in and out of the kitchen. Just when she thinks her world might stop spinning, a trip to the waterfront brings a familiar face across her path.

Rather than dwell on her personal life, Juliette throws herself into work and research. After reading her grandmother's letters from war-torn Paris, she still wants to know the full story -- and she'll travel across countries and oceans to find it.

But even Juliette can't outrun the man who stole her heart. As she finally uncovers the truth about her family history, what will it mean for her own chances at lasting love?

My Review:

What a genuinely lovely wrap-up to an amazing series. Be forewarned though that it's probably best to have read A Table at the Window and Reservations for Two before reading this last installment of Two Blue Doors. These three books have connected plots and characters and it just makes sense to get involved right from the very beginning.

First off -- while I'm not a true foodie I've discovered I have a certain weakness for foodie fiction. There's something so delicious (pun intended) about the exotic food references. I might not understand a word I read when it comes to recipe descriptions but I love the flavour they bring to the story.(Okay, last pun, I promise.) And since Juliette's family is foodie obsessed (they all work in the food industry) and they are a crazy mix of French and Italian there is a lot of passionate chef talk going on. So much fun. The author even includes recipes that sound divine but look beginner friendly enough for me to try.

As in the first two books, this one is told entirely from Juliette's witty point of view. There's even sardonic humour in the midst of tough times. And those are plentiful. I love a flawed heroine and Juliette is definitely that. She internalizes things too much, buries herself in her work and generally hides away from the harsh reality of her personal life. Luckily she has an opinionated family who aren't afraid to speak up. Exciting dynamics that left me alternately laughing hysterically or tearing my hair out.

I don't want to say too much about the romance because...well...there's two guys and only one Juliette so no spoilers. I'll just say the best man really did win and I'm a happy camper who has to work at straightening her toes after they've been curled through all those swoony scenes. Blissful sigh.

The intrigue in Juliette's family history is solved at last...a mystery that plagued me through the first two books. Immensely satisfying and well worth the wait. I might have cried a tear or two. An interesting World War II connection in this otherwise contemporary novel.

And a side note: As with the first two books, there is a definite lack of inspirational thread in Together at the Table. Just a fleeting mention of church attendance. I really missed the personal growth that comes with a faith themed story.

GIVEAWAY

MCCOY, SHIRLEE

After all, the only person who would want to hurt her is dead...or is he? With her and her child's life on the line, she'll have to trust Tristan with her secrets if she wants to finally get the fresh start she's been desperately seeking.

Rookie K-9 Unit: These lawmen solve the toughest cases with the help of their brave canine partners

My Review:

I'm squealing and jumping up an down with my fist raised in armchair sleuth triumph because I figured something out with the over-arcing suspense. Phew -- okay, let me backtrack a bit. Secrets and Lies is book 5 in the Rookie K-9 Unit continuity series. And though each book reads well as a standalone, a common suspense thread links the stories together. So I'm just asserting bragging rights over connecting the dots. :-)

Aside from that shared thread, there's another suspense plot unique to this book. A little bit hair-raising and a whole lot mystifying, Tristan has his hands full keeping Ariel safe while trying to manage his unruly teenage sister. You might say he's bombarded by the complexities of womanhood. A sweet romance blossoms between Tristan and Ariel despite the mounting obstacles in their way. Danger and intrigue persist right through to the exhilarating conclusion. The Progeny

GIVEAWAY

LEE, TOSCA
THE PROGENY

When you wake up, you remember nothing. Not your name, or where you were born, or the faces of the people you knew. Just a single warning written to yourself before you forgot it all.

Emily it's me. You.

Don't ask about the last two years...Don't try to remember and don't go digging. Your life depends on it. Other's lives depend on it.

By the way, Emily isn't your real name. You died in an accident. You paid extra for that.

You start over in a remote place with a new name, a fresh life. Until the day a stranger tells you you're being hunted for the sins of a royal ancestor who died centuries before you were born.

You don't believe him, until they come for you. Now you're on the run.

Every answer you need lies in a past you chose to erase. The only thing you know for sure is that others are about to die and you need those memories back.

But first, you have to stay alive.

My Review:

Mercy, but I think I held my breath for the duration of the read. There's a sense of urgency from the very first page. Enthralling in a different kind of edgy way. I was beguiled and bewildered -- my imagination exploding with the vivid images Lee creates through her descriptive writing. But beware the sucker punch of a cliff hanger ending. Emily is still mired in danger and intrigue as the story comes full circle and there are still so many unanswered questions! I'm not a huge fan of cliffie endings though this one is a doozy and not unexpected since speculative fiction stories usually take the full series to bring everything to conclusion.

For readers who aren't fans of speculative fiction -- this one takes place in present day (no sci-fi or time travel or high fantasy.) Emily and the other Progeny do possess a certain unusual power and the concept of the Progeny is pretty fantastical but that's the only 'speculative' content. Otherwise this book reads like an action thriller.

It is light on inspiration though there is a distinct religious presence and I can see the pieces being laid out for an overall faith thread through the series. At least I hope so.

Intriguing from the get go and well worth the read if you are brave enough to try something different.

Side note: Occasional mild language
