Unknown Threat

GIVEAWAY

BLACKBURN, LYNN H.
UNKNOWN THREAT

US Secret Service Special Agent Luke Powell is lucky to be alive. Three of his fellow agents have died in unusual circumstances in the past ten weeks. Luke is devastated by the loss of his friends, and colleagues, and his inability to locate the killer feels like a personal failure. He and his team are experts at shielding others, but now the protectors are in the need of protection.

FBI Special Agent Faith Malone is driven to succeed and confident in her ability to solve every case she's assigned. She's been put in charge of the investigation into the unprecedented attacks, and with Luke's life in danger, the stakes have never been higher. But it's hard to know how to fight back when you don't know who the enemy is.

Luke has teamed up with Faith before, but he's not convinced she's up for the job and she's not convinced he's telling her everything he knows. As more agents are targeted, Luke and Faith will have to learn to trust each other and work together to bring a killer to justice and prevent any more names from joining their brothers and sisters on the Secret Service Wall of Honor.

My Review:

Snort! I didn't know what to make of Faith at first. She's channeled her inner snark to near perfection. Sometimes it's funny (hence the snort laughter) but other times I was, "wait, whatttt? Did she just think/say....?!" Definitely a heroine with porcupine quills and walled up defenses. And definitely not of the all soft and fluffy variety. :-) Here's a glimpse into her mindset:

"...she had limited exposure to baby humans. Or little humans. Or pretty much any human who didn't have a fully formed prefrontal cortex. Although, come to think of it, she strongly suspected a few guys she'd dated in college had still been growing their brains..." (p 75)

Bwahahahaha!

Meanwhile Luke is definitely all brain...and brawn. Swoony hero material in fact. He's the suffer-in-silence, stoic, protective type. Drives Faith a little bit crazy because she can't always corral random wisps of attraction that keep surfacing the more she spends time with him. And they are clocking a lot of hours trying to chase down leads to stop a killer, all while being targets themselves. 'Cause somebody seems to be determined to wipe out Luke's entire unit.

I've never been a huge Secret Service devotee, but, until I read this book, I had a very narrow view of what exactly these agents do. Turns out there's a whole lot more to their job description than just protective detail so now my interest is piqued. And Blackburn has created a dynamic team with hints at intriguing back stories of future heroes and heroines to come. Super excited to read more of this series.

And...BONUS...insert high-pitched fan girl squealing...there are some fun nods to the author's Dive Team Investigations series!!!!!

An intense page-turner that kept me reading at a frenetic pace until I devoured the very last word.

Blackberry Beach

GIVEAWAY

HANNON, IRENE
BLACKBERRY BEACH

Katherine Parker is on the cusp of having everything she ever wanted -- fame, money, and acclaim. So why isn't she happy? In search of answers, she comes incognito to Hope Harbor on the Oregon Coast for some R&R. Maybe in her secluded rental house overlooking the serene Pacific she'll be able to calm the storm inside.

Coffee shop owner Zach Garrett has found his niche after a traumatic loss -- and has no plans to change the life he's created. Nor does he want to get involved with his reticent new neighbor, whose past is shrouded in mystery. He's had enough drama to last a lifetime. But when Katherine and Zach are recruited to help rehab a home for foster children, sparks fly. And as their lives begin to intersect, might they find more common ground than they expected...and discovered that, with love, all things are possible?

Bestselling and award-winning author Irene Hannon invites you to come home to Hope Harbor -- where hearts heal...and love blooms.

My Review:

Well, we've come full circle. I read an reviewed this book back in April and, because I love this series so much, I decided to start at the beginning with Hope Harbor, this time listening to these wonderful stories all over again. Seven books in seven weeks. Talk about book heaven! Hope you get a chance visit Hope Harbor sometime soon.

I am completely obsessed with this series! Blackberry Beach is the seventh book and I hope there are seventy more! No worries if you aren't familiar with the fabulous Hope Harbor series...well, yes, you should worry over all that you're missing out on...but each book reads well as a standalone so you can pick up anywhere and start reading.

There are some wonderful consistencies in each book though. The loving small town vibe fueled by caring people intent on making a difference in their little part of the world. The congenially sparring clergy with their rapier wit and quirky banter. The oddly intelligent seagulls, Floyd and Gladys, who like to keep an eye on folks who need some extra TLC. And Charley, of course. Artist with a paintbrush and grill, he has an eye for noticing and and a heart for caring and an uncanny way of putting pieces together in an almost divine manner....honestly, I'd read these books just for Charley!

And here's where I reveal just how completely besotted I am with this series. I have the first six books tucked away on my keeper's shelf and this latest (notice I didn't say last...please let there never be a last!) in my audible library. And because I adore both Irene Hannon's storytelling and Therese Plummer's narration so much, I'm getting ready to start listening to the series right from the start. Book in hand, ear buds in, and I'll be in bibliophile heaven for hours on end. :-)

This seventh book delivers all the heart and hope and second chances that have become trademark with the series. Where the romance develops slowly, from hesitant first missteps to a slow lowering of defenses that catapult Katherine and Zach into serious discussions and deep soul searching along with some toe-curling banter and delicious kisses. Happy sigh. I loved every blessed second!

Falling for the Fifties

GIVEAWAY

MCGEE, STEPHENIA H.
FALLING FOR THE FIFTIES

What would you do if you finally found Mr. Right...in the wrong time?

Maddie Palmer is done with dating. Internet matchmaking landed her one dud after another. Tired, frustrated, and finished with love, Maddie stays the night at a quirky Victorian bed and breakfast on the eve of her grandparents' sixty-fifth wedding anniversary. When she suddenly wakes up in 1956, she gets the unexpected chance to witness her grandparents' fairy tale love unfold and finally learn the secret to finding "the one." But what is she going to do when she meets her own Mr. Right -- only to discover he's Mr. Wrong Time?

Nathanial Hall is set on one mission. Pass his training exam and join the Hurricane Hunters at Keesler Air Force Base. When he mysteriously finds himself on base sixty-five years too early, there can only be one explanation. He has to save the crew destined to die in Hurricane Flossy. But when a beautiful singer snags his heart and derails his carefully planned life, he has to decide if staying in the past is worth risking his entire future.

Back Inn Time series: This fun, faith-filled series of short novels takes readers on romantic adventures throughout time and can be read in any order.

My Review:

Are you in a reading rut? Willing to shake things up a bit? Suspend logic and open your mind to a whole lot of what-ifs? Might I suggest embarking on a time travel adventure with Stephenia H. McGee as your guide?!

Seriously fun. Quirky. Unusual. A sense of magic mixed with realism that makes time travel seem completely plausible. And to the 1950s! I felt like I'd landed in the middle of a Doris Day movie.

And the way the author pulls this heroine and her hero into the setting -- neither realizing the other is from the future too...well, it's mind blowing amazing, that's what. It was so much fun spotting the little 'future tells' one or the other would let slip and then I was on tenterhooks waiting to find out who was going to figure it out first. So, this isn't really a doomed romance...they just think it is! :-)

There's plenty of action and drama and even some heart-in-throat moments along with some lovely swoony ones! All tied up in an enduring love story. I'm a tad shy of giddy over this literary discovery!

A Chance for the Newcomer

GIVEAWAY

CARTER, LISA
A CHANCE FOR THE NEWCOMER

A big-city chef.
A small-town single dad.
And matchmakers with marriage in mind...

Chef Kara Lockwood didn't think changing a small-town diner's menu would cause a boycott but the locals sure do love their apple pie -- especially fire chief Will MacKenzie. Kara's not sure she and the single father can ever learn to live peacefully as neighbors. But even as they clash over pastries, local matchmakers and Will's little boy are determined to bring their stubborn hearts together.

My Review:

Squealll -- back in Truelove with the Double Name Club who are up to their shenanigans -- including the matchmaking kind! In case you haven't visited Truelove yet, the Double Name Club is a posse of grannies with...well, two first names, like ErmaJean. While their civic mindedness runs to all sorts of town improvements, they excel (or think they do) at pairing up the singles in town. But they have their hands full with the new city girl and her upstart ideas and the staid, adverse-to-change fire chief. :-)

A Chance for the Newcomer is so much more than a romance -- though it's a beautifully crafted one, full of giggles and swoons and just enough angst to make a reader nervous about the outcome. But the true heart of the story comes from the small town charm and its host of quirky (and sometime exasperating) secondary characters. The way these folks bicker and fuss one moment and draw together to support someone in need the next is all kinds of bibliophile delight!

Heartwarming and toe-curling!

Paint and Nectar

GIVEAWAY

CLARK, ASHLEY
PAINT AND NECTAR

In 1929, a spark forms between talented watercolorist Eliza and William, a charming young man who has been hired to forge her popular paintings. Her aunt makes it clear Eliza should stay away from him because of a feud between their families over missing heirloom silver. But the source of the rivalry was long ago, and as the two get to know each other, they fall in love. William regrets the job that desperation led him to take and their families' ongoing bitterness, but setting things right comes at a cost.

In present-day Charleston, Lucy Legare has just inherited an old hose from a mysterious benefactor, along with all the secrets it holds, including an old silver heirloom.. Declan Pinckney is determined to buy the house for his family's development company. But as Lucy uncovers secrets about the house, garden, and silver, she becomes more determined than ever to preserve the historic Charleston property, not only for history's sake but also for her own.

My Review:

Mercy! What a breathtaking pair of stories! The way the dual timeline is woven together, the parallels in Eliza's and Lucy's lives, the heart break, the triumphs, the surprises, the way everything crests to multiple 'aha' moments at the end!!!! All punctuated with startling snippets of widsom like this:

"If you want to sprout roots, my dear, then tend them carefully. Roots are fragile before they are strong. It's true of plants as it is for life."

I'm pretty much gobsmacked except....

Sqqquuueeaaaallll --- multiple fangirling moments if you have read The Dress Shop on King Street. Won't say any more but I was "Wait, whhhaat??? I remember..." all the way through. So. Much. Fun. (But it's okay, if you haven't read King Street first. You'll still enjoy this one just as much.)

Clark has a way of conjuring up images with her words and phrasing that makes it feel like I've lived each moment with these characters. Truly, breathtaking pretty much sums it all up. Paint and Nectar is a strong compliment to her debut sister.

Evidence of Innocence

GIVEAWAY

MCCOY, SHIRLEE
EVIDENCE OF INNOCENCE

She was wrongly accused...and now she's searching for the dangerous truth.

Finally exonerated after fifteen years in prison, Kinsley Garrett's determined to find her father's true killer -- even if it makes her a target. Staying alive means relying on police chief Marcus Bayne's protection, but she won't trust him...or anyone. Not after the way everyone turned on her following her arrest. But as Marcus risks everything to shield her, can Kinsley keep him from burrowing into her heart?

My Review:

This is such a unique story line and McCoy does it so well. The author explores the complexities of Kinsley's emotions with gut-wrenching detail. Her inability to trust...wariness of law enforcement...need to keep herself apart...all play out with stomach churning intensity. Kinsley was arrested in her teens, so imagine reaching adulthood while incarcerated! Knowing you are innocent and your father's murderer is still walking free! That's gotta mess with your psyche.

And Marcus is so patient with Kinsely. And kind. And supportive. Sometimes she can even forget that he's a police chief. Their's is a gentle romance that sparks in the midst of troubled times. You might say wariness is their love language. :-)

The suspense is emotionally gripping and well paced. I was on edge right from the start, waiting for all the bad stuff to start happening! And McCoy doesn't disappoint. Another must-read-it-all-in-one-sitting page-turner from a much loved author.

An Amish Surprise

GIVEAWAY

GRAY, SHELLEY SHEPARD
AN AMISH SURPRISE

In the second installment of the "enjoyable and charming" (USA TODAY) Shelley Shepard Gray's delightful Berlin Bookmobile series, librarian Sarah Anne Miller returns to Berlin to help a childless Amish couple form the family they've always prayed for.

Miriam and Calving Gingerich have been trying for a baby for several years, but the Lord hasn't seen fit to bless them. Though Calvin claims he's content with their childless state, Miriam knows he's not, and when he starts spending more time off their farm, she worries he's found someone else. But just as she finds herself at her lowest point, she discovers the ultimate surprise. Unable to confide in anyone who might tell Calvin -- out of fear she'll disappoint him with another miscarriage -- Miriam turns to bookmobile librarian Sarah Anne Miller -- and any books she may have on pregnancy and childbirth.

Calvin has been keeping a secret from his wife, but it's not another woman. It's a little boy. One afternoon when visiting Sarah Anne's bookmobile, he meets Miles, a ten-year-old living with a foster family down the road. But after spending more time with the boy, Calvin learns that his foster family has no plans to adopt him. Calvin feels a connection with Miles and yearns to give the boy a home, but he's afraid to tell Miriam, knowing she's devastated they can't have children of their own.

As weeks pass and Sarah Anne learns that Miles has nearly given up hope of ever finding a real home, she knows it's time to intervene. It's going to take some fancy footwork and a whole lot of prayer, but she knows she can help make this struggling couple into a happy family of four.

My Review:

Absolutely ADORE the way each story in this series revolves around the bookmobile and Sarah Anne's librarian wiles! Such a fun backdrop for a bibliophile like me. And I have a thing about bookmobiles -- kinda like some people have for lighthouses.  So this book tickled my fancy before I even started reading!

An Amish Surprise is the second book in the Berlin Bookmobile series, but it can be read as a standalone. However, if you have read A Perfect Amish Romance, you'll be happy to discover that Sarah Anne's romance gets off the ground in this one. She's endearingly awkward and unsure of herself and I was on pins and needles waiting to see how it would all play out.

Meanwhile, Sarah Anne is anything but hesitant when it comes to her bookmobile and she works her magic in the lives of some of her most loyal patrons. She's all about finding the perfect book match, asking the right questions and keeping confidences no matter what. What happens in the bookmobile, stays in the bookmobile. :-)

Once again, Gray draws from the community to provide a multi-layered story that reflects real people wrestling with real issues. In this novel, multiple characters struggle with trusting in love. Communication, or more accurately, not communicating effectively, provides the catalyst for plenty of drama. And the result is a story brimming with faith and hope and all kinds of second chances.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Tavia Gilbert who did a great job of bringing these captivating characters to life.

Bookshop by the Sea

GIVEAWAY

HUNTER, DENISE
BOOKSHOP BY THE SEA

Sophie Lawson should be enjoying her sister's wedding day. But nothing could have prepared her to see the best man again.

After her mother became bedridden and her father bailed on the family, Sophie found herself serving as a second mother to her twin brother, Seth and younger sister, Jenna. Sophie supported her siblings through their college years, putting aside her own dream of opening a bookshop in Piper's Cove -- the quaint North Carolina beach town they frequented as children.

Now it's finally time for Sophie to follow her own pursuits. Seth has a new job, and Jenna is set to marry her college beau in Piper's Cove. But the destination wedding reunites Sophie with best man Aiden Maddox, her high school sweetheart who left her without a backward glance.

When an advancing hurricane strands Aiden in Piper's Cove after the wedding, he finds the hotels booked to capacity and has to ask Sophie to put him up until the storm passes. As the two ride out the weather, old feelings rise to the surface. The delay also leaves Sophie with mere days to get her bookshop up and running. Can she trust Aiden to stick around? And will he find the courage to risk his heart?

My Review:

Nobody does emotionally complicated quite like Denise Hunter. :-) Bookshop by the Sea is the kind of romantic read that curls your toes and gives you heart palpitations...along with heartburn from some of the characters' antics! It's a fast, swoony beach read -- hello, bookshop by the sea?! I'd have bought the book just for the title alone.

Sophie and Aiden are buried beneath layers of angst and unresolved hurt. It's been seven years since Aiden walked away. Seven years of harboured hurts and misunderstandings. (Mercy, but Sophie's granny can hold a grudge!) A wedding brings this hero and heroine face to face again and a hurricane keeps them in a holding pattern. Cue the sizzle and sparks from all the crackling energy zipping around these two -- whether they're sparring or...sparking. :-)

Love this small-town setting. Piper Cove is full of good folks who don't hesitate to come together in a time of crisis. Sophie's new to the community, but the inhabitants have her back and some of my favourite scenes are when everyone pitches in when she fears all is lost. Absolutely heartwarming and hopeful. And, sqqqquuuueeeaaallll, surprise cameo and sweet nod to the author's previous Bluebell Inn series. I was fangirling all over the place when that cropped up.

Bookshop by the Sea delivers a richly layered reunion romance fuelled with the hope of second chances.

Driftwood Bay

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY

HANNON, IRENE
DRIFTWOOD BAY

After tragedy upends her world, Jeannette Mason retreats to the tiny Oregon seaside town of Hope Harbor to create a new life.Vowing to avoid emotional attachments, she focuses on running her lavender farm and tea-room -- until a new neighbor with a destructive dog and a forlorn little girl invades her turf. But she needn't worry. Dr. Logan West is too busy coping with an unexpected family, a radical lifestyle change, and an unruly pup to have any interest in his aloof and disagreeable neighbor.

Yet when both Jeanette and Logan find themselves pulled into the life of a tattered Christian family fleeing persecution in war-torn Syria, might they discover that love sometimes comes calling when it's least expected?

Bestselling and award-winning author Irene Hannon invited readers back to the charming seaside town of Hope Harbor, where they are sure to find peace, healing, and a second chance at happiness.

My Review:

published in 2019

Oopise, almost missed revisiting this one with y'all since I jumped ahead to Starfish Pier this week. I actually listened to them in the right order but instead of pacing myself to one book a week I kinda binged at the end of my revisiting Hope Harbor audible extravaganza. :-)

Rambunctious beagle alert!!!!! Perfect for comic relief, exasperating interruptions and copious warm fuzzies! That right there is enough of a reason to read Driftwood Bay. But there's so much more to this divinely magical story (the whole series, really) that elevate it to the absolute top of my everyone-in-the-world-should-read-this-book-NOW list.

Like taco maker extraordinaire and town sage, Charley. I love that he has more page time in this novel. If you're familiar with the Hope Harbor series, you're probably as crazy about Charley as I am. And as curious about just how he knows the things he knows. I love an air of mystery in a man, but there's an extra sparkly special something about Charley. Seagulls Floyd and Gladys know that to be true and if you can't trust a seagull who can you trust?

I know, I'm not making any sense, might as well be speaking gibberish but, all will be made known once you've ventured into Hope Harbor. And if this is your first time with this series, no worries, Driftwood Bay (book 5) reads as a standalone -- all of the books do. But, be forewarned, once you sample the delectable  sweetness of Irene Hannon's storytelling you'll have to read the rest of the books too.

Here's one of the reasons why -- Charley sage-isms. Like this:

"God's timing isn't always ours. Sometimes he opens doors we aren't certain we're ready to walk through. And it's fine to be cautious. Not every door that beckons is divinely inspired. But at some point we do have to make a decision because most don't stay open forever." (sorry I can't quote page numbers -- I listened to the audio version.)

Then there's Jeannette and Logan's poignant love story. There's something so fragile about their wary relationship. Certain scenes kept snatching my breath away. So much pain and anguish in their pasts. My innards were twisted up in knots as I read my way through their angst.

And the Syrian refugee family brings another dimension to the overall theme of finding hope after a catastrophic loss. Each character deals with their grief in different ways and it isn't until they find the courage to take risks, drawing strength and support from one another that they can begin to heal.

"Don't let fear stop you from being everything God intended you to be."

Or you can click on the Giveaway label in the left column of the screen and just scroll through the Saturday posts for the last few weeks.  The clock is ticking since I have a month deadline on wins.

2) How I select my giveaway winners: The miracle that is random.org. Everyone is assigned a number and I let the whirligig whatsit do its thing. :-) There are no advantages/disadvantages to what time you comment, what order your comment comes in, or whether you enter through the blog or email (though i do prefer blog comments, but I totally get that sometimes blogger doesn't play nice, people have privacy issues or don't have the right online account to work.)

3) All things that are frustrating about blogger are coming to a head this summer. At the end of July it's ending its automated email subscriptions so daily emails will no longer be sent to subscribers. :-( I'm looking into alternate blogging options but I'm a techno klutz so not sure how that's going to work. I'll keep you posted. In any case, the email notifications will still go out for the next two months.

The Amish Secret Wish

GIVEAWAY

HILTON, LAURA V.
THE AMISH SECRET WISH

Can you love someone you've never met?

Waitress Hallie Brunstetter has a secret: she writes a popular column for her Amish paper under the pen name GHB. When Hallie receives a letter from a reader asking to become her pen pal, she reluctantly agrees. She can't help but be drawn to the compassionate stranger, never expecting him to show up in Hidden Springs looking for GHB...or for him to be quite so handsome in real life. But after losing her beau in a tragic accident, Hallie won't risk her heart -- or her secrets -- again.

If Kiah didn't already feel so connected to GHB, Hallie would be a perfect wife -- and it seems most of Hidden Springs's would-be matchmakers agree! Though Hallie is peculiarly opposed to uncovering GHB's true identity, she understands Kiah almost as well as his mystery pen pal. The longer he searches for GHB, the more Kiah finds himself hoping Hallie will be holding the pen that first captured his heart. But will Hallie ever trust Kiah with the truth about her identity...and her feelings for him?

My Review:

Laura V. Hilton delivers another sparkling romance with this third Hidden Springs novel. Part comedy, part drama with more than a hint of spice thrown in because... woohee, there's tons of insta-love lightning bolts zigging and zagging between Hallie and Kiah. Let's just say this is not your grossmammi's usual Amish fiction! :-) Nothing untoward, but you might want to clear off your fainting couch and keep some smelling salts handy 'cause this is definitely a 'kissing book'.

Loved this hero and heroine instantly -- and the muddled mess they make of their relationship/not-a-relationship is both hilarious and touching and mildly exasperating at times! Just the sort of literary fodder to keep me turning pages at a frantic pace. The Amish Secret Wish became a read-in-one-sitting and bask in the afterglow kind of reading adventure for me.
