My Review:

I couldn't find a place to breathe reading this book. There was some serious hyperventilating going on at my house as I devoured every page. The action doesn't stop from the startling first scene until the very last one. Lots of detail and a solid suspenseful plot are balanced by a romance born from a past friendship. This is one thrill of a read that romantic suspense lovers won't want to miss.

The Heiress of Winterwood

GIVEAWAY
LADD, SARAH E.
THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD

Darbury, England, 1814

Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.

When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.

Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

My Review:

I'm in a swoon of Regency euphoria! What a brilliant debut novel! Ladd has a lovely, flowing style -- lots of gorgeous historical details and I think she got the time period's conversation just right. The combination catapulted me into history and I do so love getting lost in a book!

Ameila is a determined (alright, stubborn), heroine. I loved the contrast between her behaviour and the 'acceptal' deportment of a young lady in that time period. And Graham doesn't know what to make of her!

An added suspense element really gives this story a kick and I found myself in rabid-reader mode which led to a near sleepless night just so I could reach the end in a timely fashion! If you love Regency, this just might be the next book for you!

The Dance

GIVEAWAY
WALSH, DAN
SMALLEY, GARY
THE DANCE

Jim Anderson is a successful businessman, and his wife, Marilyn, is the perfect wife. And why wouldn't she be? He gives her everything she needs. That's why Jim never expected to come home one day and find Marilyn gone.

After 27 years of marriage, Marilyn has had enough of feeling unloved and neglected. She wants to experience some measure of happiness before she's too old to enjoy it, even signing up for dance lessons, something Jim would never do. What will it take for Jim to finally become the man Marilyn needs him to be?

Combining the literary talents of bestselling author Dan Walsh and the relationship expertise of bestselling author Gary Smalley, The Dance is the first novel in The Restoration Series. Readers will get caught up in these flawed but sincere members of the Anderson family as they rediscover genuine love and start a transformation that ultimately affects all of them.

My Review:

What a fantastic read! Walsh and Smalley make a great team and give their readers a realistic snapshot of a struggling marriage and the fallout that ensues. There's depth and insight and some really funny moments -- at least they were to me. Poor clueless Jim, not quite sure why Marilyn has left him . Only a man could get away with portraying some of those scenes. A female author would have been accused of stereo-typing.

The authors did a great job of  converting me into a Jim fan. I didn't think it would be possible at the beginning of the book but Jim's conversion into a gentler, softer more spiritual self makes for a moving read. Even as Marilyn stays prickly and defensive almost to the very end. The couples dynamics is dead-on. This could easily be used in a couples therapy course.

The Dance is fiction though, and it makes a rewarding and thought-provoking read. Memorable characters, a tight plot and dashes of humour to break up the angst all contribute to a wonderfully satisfying read.

The Gate

STOUTEN, DANN
THE GATE

When an ad for a vacation cottage catches the eye of a man on the edge of burnout, he impulsively sets off to visit the property while his wife and daughters are away. When he arrives and is ushered through the gate, he finds something far different from the typical vacation retreat. In fact, it seems he may have found the back door to heaven. The proprietor and people from his past welcome him with food, rest, and conversation until what started out as a little escape from everyday life turns into an experience he will never forget.

This imaginative novel explores the big questions we all have about what lies beyond this earthly life. Readers hungry for a taste of heaven will find in The Gate hope, encouragement, and pure joy.

My Review:

A man steps out of time and experiences a period of introspection as he seeks guidance from deceased people from his past as well as God and the Savior. Reminiscent of The Shack, without the deep grittiness, The Gate is a modern-day parable. Readers are required to explore the content and meaning of each encounter. A slow-paced, descriptive narrative based on recollections, I found The Gate to read more like a non-fiction devotional then a story. The author has a degree in narrative preaching and it does shine here but left me feeling as if I'd just read a sermon as opposed to a work of fiction.

Sweet Sanctuary

GIVEAWAY

SAWYER, KIM VOGEL
SWEET SANCTUARY

A Story of Hope and Love from Bestselling Author Kim Vogel Sawyer

Lydia Eldredge longs to provide a sanctuary for her son, Nicky. But a constant threat comes from Nicky's drug-addicted father, who wants the boy and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get him.

Dr. Micah Hatcher serves the immigrant population in Queens, but under cover of darkness he provides another service that must not be discovered lest his and his brother's lives be in danger.

When Lydia and Micah's paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other's callings. Through unforeseen twists and turns, they seek a refuge of safety--for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God unexpectedly puts in their lives.

My Review:

This sweet romance comes with a multitude of complications that Sawyer expertly weaves amidst the backdrop of World War II. Sweet Sanctuary is a stirring story with many unexpected turns that piqued my interest and held my attention. The inspirational thread is prominent, present in nearly every scene and affects the lives of both the hero and heroine as well as numerous secondary characters. A powerful witness to Christ's redeeming love.

The Prodigal Son Returns

GIVEAWAY

DREXLER, JAN
THE PRODIGAL SON RETURNS

From her first glimpse of his big-city suit, Ellie Miller knows Bram Lapp is trouble. The handsome Englischer says he wants to reclaim the life he left long ago. Even if his smile disarms her, all of Ellie's energy must go to her children and their struggling farm…and to atoning for her mistakes.  A criminal's trail has brought FBI informant Bram to Ellie's warm and welcoming Indiana community. Now he's posing as the kind of man he once hoped to be. Someone steadfast and upright. Someone who might be worthy of Ellie. Because no matter how much she claims she doesn't want a second chance at love, he knows he's found the home they were meant to share.

My Review:

Woohoo, I've found me a new favourite Amish author! Drexler has a wonderful writing style. Her words flow smooth and polished and I savored every word.

The unusual time period (1936) was a real hook for me as was the FBI angle in Bram's plotline. But it was the pulse of the Amish lifestyle that kept me reading.  This is a magical story about loss and love and the power of God to heal and bless in all the places of your life.

The connection between Bram and Ellie is immediate and volatile...on Ellie's side anyway. Loved how the author played them against each other, drawing out the romantic tension until I was rabidly hanging on to every word, aching for more.

The Prodigal Son Returns is an amazing debut novel and I'm praying that Jan Drexler has many more stories in the works for her soon to be legions of loyal fans.
