LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT WEEK'S GIVEAWAYS:

Just a heads up: Blogger is doing even more strange things -- like unpublishing my posts because it claims they are filled with spam?!  That's been happening with the Fiction Addiction Fix blog as well -- like with every single post so I've given that one up entirely. We'll see what happens with Best Reads. I schedule my posts about a week in advance so if I doesn't crop up at midnight it's likely been kidnapped by the Blogger Gremlin and I will have to mount my white steed and do battle to retrieve it. :-)

The Baby's Christmas Blessing

GIVEAWAY

WHISTLER, MEGHANN
THE BABY'S CHRISTMAS BLESSING

A second chance at love with a newborn as matchmaker?

Nothing will be merry about Steve Weston's Christmas if he doesn't find a nanny for his newborn nephew fast. But the best choice is Chloe Richardson, the woman he pushed away years ago. He has a second chance at making the season's joy last for a lifetime -- unless he allows old wounds to separate them once more...

My Review:

A second chance at young love gone awry!

'Tis the season for miracles, and Steve and Chloe are both due for some Christmas magic. There's such great chemistry between these two and the banter is so much fun! I was chortling and swooning all the way through. And sometimes fuming because these two are s-t-u-b-b-o-r-n!!!! Luckily they have a lively, caring community that has their backs. And some folks might have a wee bit of matchmaking tendencies which also adds to the fun.

But there's a serious side to this romance as well as both hero and heroine struggle with grief and loss from their pasts and challenges in their present. And then there's adorable baby Aiden the catalyst that brings Chloe and Steve back together again. He comes with enough newborn angst to frazzle the most stoic uncle and caregiver. Equal parts funny and tender and brought back fond memories of those demanding early weeks. Who needs sleep anyway? Or eardrums? lol

There's also a nice light-to-medium Christmas ambiance that makes this a heartwarming holiday read.

What Matters Most

GIVEAWAY

WALSH, COURTNEY
WHAT MATTERS MOST

Emma Woodson is hoping the cobblestone streets of Nantucket and the charm of her late husband's family cottage will be the fresh start she and her young son, CJ need. Securing a dream job at an art gallery is one more step along the path to a new life...and away from a piece of her history she hopes will never be revealed. Falling in love with the kind and handsome guy she hires to clean out the rental apartment above the garage wasn't part of the plan.

Jameson Shaw comes to Nantucket for one reason: deliver his letter to Emma and never return. But when he sees an opportunity to help her, he takes a chance, desperate to atone for his past. He never planned to keep his connection to her husband a secret or to fall in love with her. After all, he knows that their new relationship might not survive the discovery of who he really is.

My Review:

Another Courtney Walsh emotional sucker punch read! She had me on tenterhooks from the very start, cunningly keeping secrets...well, secret...and just hinting at them for well over half the book. I was going out of mind with curiosity. Which means why, yes, I actually did read this book in one sitting.

Why does Jamie feel he has to atone for something connected to Emma? Why is it so hard for him to tell her? What deep, dark secret has been eating him alive? And then there's Emma, life on hold as she struggles with grief and regret for five years. She's been going through the motions of living without really feeling alive and I so wanted to understand why!

And then, by chance (not!) Emma and Jamie meet in Nantucket. Attraction ignites, but romance is rife with pitfalls as they both keep parts of themselves hidden. Such an emotional roller coaster ride! Depression, anguish, fear gradually vanquished by the gift of forgiveness and grace which ultimately leads to acceptance...and, no spoiler here, a hard-won happily ever after.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!

Goal Update: #7 Start a new-to-me series.

Rocky Mountain Vendetta

GIVEAWAY

CHOATE, JANE M.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN VENDETTA

On the run in the Rockies with a deadly storm looming...

With her husband's killer released from prison, former US Marshal Brianna Thomas's fake identity is no longer enough to protect her and her little girl. The man's dead set on killing anyone involved in his arrest, and the only person Brianna can trust is her late husband's partner, ex-marshal Gideon Stratham. Snowbound in the Rockies, she and Gideon must work together to survive the storm and a convict's vengeance.

My Review:

Classic action-packed, danger-fuelled romantic suspense that begins on a tense note and doesn't let up until the very end. An oxygen tank is a necessary accoutrement for this read. And keep some comfort chocolate on hand too.

Love that Brianna and Gideon have a history -- not in a romantic sense -- but as friendly colleagues. They already know enough about each other to make their immediate attraction plausible. There's some great dialogue -- a nice balance between teasing banter and professional respect. These two trust each other and I liked the way they led by turns throughout the story. Brianna can clearly hold her own and Gideon appreciates her ability to do so.

And what's a flight from danger without toting along a precocious child and her cat? Ruthie provides some great comic relief moments as well as some 'awwww' ones as she bonds with Gideon. And ups the terror factor because -- hellllooo, kid in the back seat of the car! My latent Mama Bear tendencies sprang to life in this read.

If you like your suspense fast and furious, this is definitely the page-turner for you.

Veil of Winter

GIVEAWAY

DICKERSON, MELANIE
VEIL OF WINTER

She's hounded from every side by treacherous elements and foes, but her greatest enemy lies within.

In the mountains near France, the medieval Princess Elyce is being forced to marry, thus forming an alliance that will enrich her father but enslave her kingdom. Instead, she chooses to feign her death and flee to Prague to beg King Wenceslaus to help save her people.

In England, the young knight Sir Gerard has a vision from God instructing him to help Elyce on her quest. When he arrives to find she has been near death for days, he manages to revive her. However, thinking the stranger was trying to kiss her, the princess immediately distrusts him. But her desperate situation forces her to accept his aid.

Pursued by her enemy's guards over mountainous terrain, they must also battle the deadly winter elements. Her greatest challenge may be to overcome the voices of disapproval and accusation from her childhood. Will her emotions lead her into her true identity, or will they undermine her ability to work with Gerard and to save her people, who desperately need her help?

In this dazzling and romantic story, New York Times bestselling author Melanie Dickerson takes the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale to satisfying new heights.

My Review:

A fun fairy tale retelling where the villains are the vilest and the hero the noblest and the heroine? Well, she's driven by demons from her past but led by a pure heart and the desire to provide the best for her people. It all makes for an enchanting mix of action, adventure, danger and intrigue. And romance, of course, because every good fairy tale needs a happily ever after ending.

Enjoyed Dickerson's take on the Sleeping Beauty angle, and how that becomes the pivotal springboard for the rest of the tale. That 'almost kiss' happens very early on in the story and provides a rocky start to Gerard and Elyce's relationship. A nice upside down twist to the classic tale.

I enjoyed listening to Julie Mason's audio book narration courtesy of my library's Libby collection. She amplified my enjoyment of this read by bringing these characters and their story to life.

Goal Update: #7 Start new-to-me-series, #9 Read outside my comfort zone (YA)

Husband Auditions
by Angela Ruth Strong
Kregel Publishers

How far would you go to find the perfect husband? Al the way back to the 1950s?

In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young women on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she's handed a strange present at the latest wedding -- a 1950s magazine article of 'ways to get a husband' -- she decides there's nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can't get any more single, can she?

Her brother's roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love -- Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When 'Meri Me' debuts, it's an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she's looking for...

With droll comic timing unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters. Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.

Love Pact With the Hero

GIVEAWAY

HO, LIWEN Y.
LOVE PACK WITH THE HERO

Two best friends. One little girl's prayers. And a love pact that may be the answer to all their Christmas wishes.

Haven Alexander used to believe in happy ever afters -- before she lost her husband became a single mom. These days, she keeps herself busy as the event planner at Freedom Ridge Lodge, helping to make other couples' dreams come true. Her other job? Humouring Miah, her spunky three-year-old daughter, who has a dream other own, finding herself a daddy. This task proves challenging, though, when Miah sets her sights on Haven's childhood friend who comes home for a visit.

Jeremiah Gilbert left Freedom a dozen years ago with a bad reputation and an even worse regret...not confessing his love for his best friend, Haven. He has returned, however, older and wiser and ready to rekindle their friendship -- and more. There's a promise on the line, one they made in high school, that he longs to fulfill. Winning over her daughter, Miah, is easy, but helping to heal Haven's heart proves to be nearly impossible.

When Miah gets into a dangerous situation, Therese old friends must put the past behind them and find new ways to trust in each other and in the One able to meet their deepest needs.

My Review:

A fun and flirty holiday escape read.

I love the friends to more trope and this one is fabulous. There's an immediate connection between Haven and Jeremiah from the first time they meet...er re-meet...even though they've both been through a lot personally. But it's as if the fates have conspired to bring them together under the perfect little matchmaker's watchful eyes. Jeremiah is totally on board, but Haven is wary of trusting her heart and her future again.

Love the way the romance develops -- the way they slide back into their easy 'best friends banter' which is all kinds of fun. Especially since now there's an undercurrent of electricity that wasn't there before. Sometimes that charged atmosphere is in danger of melting all the lovely holiday snow! And Jeremiah's pursuit is so tender and thoughtful and weighted in prayer.

Which brings me to this lovely fact: as much as the romance is all kinds of fun, there's also a touching inspirational thread and brings added depth to this tender love story.

"God has been good to me. He took the mess I'd made of my life and brought me through it. I can honestly say that I'm grateful for everything that happened. Without the brokenness, I wouldn't have understood how much I needed Him to make me whole." (p 108)

A sweet romance centered around friends and family and the hope that comes from placing your trust in a loving Father. His plans are always the best ones!
