JOHNSON, MYRA
THE HORSEMAN'S HEART
Can Sheridan trust a misplaced cowboy?
North Carolina's a long, long way from Texax, but horse trainer Kip Lorimer needs to get out of town fast because the woman who long ago destroyed his last remnants of trust has just caught up with him -- again.
Special-ed teacher Sheridan Cross has trust issues of her own, so when Kip shows up with a horse to donate to the family's equine therapy program, she can't help but be suspicious. A cowboy a thousand miles from home and living out of a horse trailer? What's wrong with this picture?
When Sheridan's mother offers Kip a job as a barn manager, Sheridan decides she'd better stick close enough to keep an eye on things, never expecting she'll soon have eyes only for the handsome cowboy. Can they trust their hearts and find true love, or will their troubled pasts come crashing down on their dreams?
My Review:
I don't often get my hands on a Heartsong Presents book since they aren't in plentiful supply up here in Canada, but when I do I am always amazed at the breadth and depth and quality of the writing. The Horseman's Heart is no exception. Johnson excels at digging deep, making her characters achingly real, flaws and all. As they grapple for a future, the reader is carried right along with them.
And who can resist a cowboy? Not me, that's for sure -- especially when it's a cowboy the caliber of Kip Lorimer. Sheridan can't resist his lure either, though she gives it a valiant try. It's witnessing that struggle as they both deal with trust issues from their pasts that engaged my emotions and committed me to the read.
Full of satisfying emotional angst (yes, angst can be satisfying under the direction of a gifted writer), sparks of humour, one major unexpected plot twist and some incredibly tender romantic scenes, A Horseman's Heart is pure, excellent, unforgettable romance!

It packs a punch! Always amazes me how writers can do so much with a measured word count. Johnson is incredible at that. Good luck Liz and Ladette. :-)
