Suspendered Sentence

GIVEAWAY

BRADFORD, LAURA
SUSPENDERED SENTENCE

After the Stoltzfus barn catches fire, Claire is awed by the response of the community. Hundreds of Amish men gather together to raise a new barn for the family in a matter of days. But in the midst of the work, a human skeleton is unearthed. Found with the remains is half of a friendship bracelet last seen on Sadie Lehman, an Amish teen long believed to have left her strict upbringing for the allure of English ways.

Now Detective Jakob Fisher—once a member of the Amish community himself—is determined to solve the young woman’s murder. With Claire’s help, he must dig into the past and bring to light long-buried secrets—secrets that someone is willing to kill to protect…

My Review:

I love the clever titles in this series! The quirky nod to both Amish and Mystery themes...Hearse and Buggy, Assaulted Pretzel, Shunned and Dangerous...but this one takes the cake. Suspendered Sentence! Bwahahahaha! I haven't read all the books, but had no trouble picking up this one. In fact, I couldn't put it down!

The whole story is told from Claire's perspective.  She hasn't lived in the town long and is still getting used to the cultural differences between the Amish and English. She ponders the questions we all wonder about, like shunning, but the author always writes with the utmost respect. There's wonderful give and take between this heroine and her Amish friends for all that they are so different. For one thing, Claire isn't afraid of speaking her mind which can get her into a lot of trouble.

Cue handsome detective Jakob Fisher -- a shunned Amish lawman and up and coming love interest. Blissful sigh. Their tender, sweet romance is delectable....when they can fit courting in between mysteries! Subtle clues and a host of compelling secondary characters kept me on my toes as I tried to piece the puzzle together before Jakob and Claire. And yay me, I did! (another  gold star on my armchair sleuth banner.)

Though published for the general market, this cozy mystery still carries some gentle insights into putting faith in God. A wonderful mix of Amish, mystery and romance.
