RESTORING LOVE
Only when we let God write our love story do we live fully restored...
Mitch, a contractor and house-flipper, is restoring a beautiful old home in an idyllic Midwestern neighbourhood. Angela, a woman filled with regrets and recently transplanted to his area, is anything but idyllic. She's almost his worse nightmare. Unbeknownst to Mitch, Angela is also restoring something -- herself.
As he struggles to keep his business afloat and she works to overcome mistakes of her past, these unlikely friends soon discover they have something unexpected in common -- a young mom who is fighting to give her children a better life after her husband's incarceration. While Mitch and Angela are drawn to help this mother survive, they find themselves drawn to each other. Will a lifetime of regrets hold them back or unite them in redemption and true love?
My Review:
Jennifer Slattery excels at writing about real life in all it's messiness. Her characters are flawed, struggling with the kind of issues that are all too common in our modern world. Meet Bianca -- a young mom struggling to raise her children in poverty, Angela -- a mature new Christian desperate to leave the sins of her past behind, and Mitch -- a devout man facing the complications of a struggling business and an addicted son. Three diverse people, on three separate paths whose lives connect in an inspired way.
Restoring Love is much more than a love story -- though there is a sweet mature romance brewing between Angela and Mitch. Love that they are just as uncertain and wary as teenagers -- maybe more so since they've lived a whole lot more and have experienced just how badly a relationship can go. But the more powerful love story here is the one between a loving Father and His children.
Bianca is lost -- running on empty. Barely holding her family together. She's proud and bitter and reclusive, shunning every advance that Mitch and Angela make. Bianca doesn't know Jesus and she needs Him in the worst way. Mitch and Angela know that and I love how tenacious they are about approaching her. Especially Angela, who boldly reaches out despite each rebuff. And she's not comfortable doing it which makes it all the more remarkable. Such a wonderful example of living in community.
A motivationally touching and uplifting story.

This storyline is intriguing to me because it's human nature to pretend we have everything under control when the exact opposite is usually the case. I'm curious to learn more about all three characters and how they face life's challenges. Thanks, Kav.

And Jennifer does such a good job with that human nature aspect. Good luck, Diane.
DeleteI have every single one of Jennifer Slattery's books, except for this one. So many of her books take place "after the wedding" which makes them so much more relatable. The funny thing is, it's interesting when I read books with more mature characters than the 20-somethings in so many others. These characters are MY age!! I tend to forget that and think they're so much older than me. Bwahaha tlhcoupon(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteBwahahaha! So true -- we're only as old as we feel, right? Which makes me about twelve 'cause I never grew up. :-) Good luck, Terrill.
DeleteStories about real life with flawed characters make a book seem very realistic and this makes wonderful reading! Looking forward to this book.

It really does. Good luck, rubynreba.
DeleteI have been wanting to read this one ever since I first became aware of it. Please toss my name in the hat. I got tickled over Terrill's comment. I had an opportunity to get a freebie and it was about a more "mature" couple. I remember thinking I didn't want to read a story with the main characters so old. Then I realized they were my age! Ouch and Ack!

Bwahahaha! Good luck, Diana.
DeleteTrust me, Diana, I am not aging with grace. It is definitely something I pray about. When my kids (now in their teens) act like I'm sooo old, I want to throttle them. I pray about that, too. hahaha

DeleteMy internet keeps going on and off today and more off than anything. They're working on it, but probably just got it long enough to come over here. Terrill, I definitely think you are aging gracefully. I have seen your profile pic and you look very fit. Me on the other...well, let's just change the subject. :/ haha
DeleteWhat a book! You know, we all are flawed in some way or other so to read a book with characters like that, I love the realness of that. Thank you for sharing, Kav!
