SKETCHY BEHAVIOR
Other than harboring a somewhat obsessive fondness for Crispix and completely swearing off boys after a bad date (don't ask), sixteen-year-old Kate Carter is about as ordinary as they come, except for her two notable talents: art and sarcasm. After an introduction to forensic sketching in her elective art class, Kate discovers a third and most unexpected gift: criminal profiling. Her photo-quality sketch helps the police catch a wanted murderer and earns her celebrity status in South Woodhaven Falls. But when that murderer appears to be using his friends to exact revenge. Kate goes from local hero to possible target. Will she manage to survive? Will life ever be normal again? And will local news anchor Ted Deffle ever stop sending her flowers?
My Review:
published in 2011
My thanks to my public library for keeping me piled high with excellent retro reads.
Another brilliant Young Adult novel told from the delightful (and sarcastic) first person point of view of Kate Carter. Her inner dialogue is so much fun to read. Especially the observations of her parents -- a scientific oriented engineer father and 'get-in-touch-with-your-feelings' psychiatrist mother. Such a hoot! And when she begins attending church -- oh my goodness -- the things we take for granted seem so odd from her fresh perspective. Definitely kept me chuckling.
But then there's this uncanny gift that Kate has. The ability to draw a photo-like-portrait based entirely on description. It's a talent that catches a killer and suddenly Kate is in the limelight...and in the crosshairs of one ticked-off murderer. And suddenly Kate's predictably boring life is anything but! I couldn't put Sketchy Behavior down. A fun, fast and engaging read.

As I've said a hundred times, I'm not normally a YA reader but this one sounds intriguing! I have a long dormant talent for drawing that was fueled in High School drawing class, so that angle in the book interests me :-) It's been much too long since I've picked up pencil and scratchpad to draw what I see in a magazine, book or comics!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, toss my name in...this would certainly be a out-of-the-ordinary book for me. Sometimes it's nice to mix it up a bit!

Ooohh - sharpen up those coloured pencils, Trixi and start sketching. Maybe you could be a cover artist. How cool would that be? And you'll love this book because a lot of the scenes take place in the art room. Good luck!

DeleteLOL, Kav! I'm not sure my talent is up to that standard, it has been way too long! Thanks for the vote of confidence though, maybe one day I will pick it up again. For now, reading takes up a good portion of my time :-)
DeleteThis book sounds so interesting. The cover made me think it was a book about art until I looked up at the eyes and they drew me in. I would love to be entered to win this. Thank you for the chance.
ReplyDeleteBTW, they sentenced a 24 year old man for setting our library on fire. They gave him 14 years in prison. I think he had just gotten out after serving six years in prison for child molestation too. Bad dude. The library still hasn't reopened.
Blessings,
Cindy W.
That's so awful about your library. Arson is horrific but to set fire to a library????? Wonder what the motive was? Hope your library will be able to reopen sooner than later. Good luck, Cindy.
DeleteThat's terrible news about the library!! Why in the world does someone set fire to anything? I'm with Kav, I hope they will be able to rebuild it repair to open again sooner than later!
DeleteHe threw a fire cracker into the book return slot.
DeleteIt is a historical building as well. It was beautiful inside and out. I'm just glad they caught the guy and he has been sentenced for doing the crime.
