Until I Met You

GIVEAWAY

FARIS, TARI
UNTIL I MET YOU

Welcome back to Heritage, Michigan -- the small town with a big heart.

When she hears that the town of Heritage is looking for a new librarian, Libby Kingsley jumps at the opportunity. Little did she know the library is barely more than a basement room stuffed with dusty, outdated books. What the community really needs is a new building. But the only funds available are those being channeled into the new town square, and the landscape architect in charge of the project wants nothing to do with her plans.

All Austin Williams wants to do is get the town square proect finished, and he hopes it is enough to save the family business. Then he can extricate himself from the town that reveres the brother who cost him so much. But the local media and the town's new librarian seem to be conspiring against him at every turn. Will the determiend bookworm find her way into his blueprints -- and possibly even his heart?

My Review:

I'm always on board for a librarian heroine -- especially one who has the daunting task of transforming a sad, neglected, nobody-wants-to-visit-except-the-spiders, dust-encrusted tomb of a library. I was itching to roll up my sleeves and dive in to help Libby...and believe me she needs help on multiple fronts!

Faris delivers an intrinsically layered story of heartache and hope with not one but two tumultuous romances! Love how Austin and Libby and Nate and Olivia get equal billing and how their lives intertwine in a complicated pattern of twists and turns. So much raw emotion kept me on a romantical edge right to the very last page!

There's plenty of laugh out loud moments too -- especially when it comes to Libby and Austin's numerous unfortunate interactions. Lots of giddy grinning and hearty guffawing that eased my tender heart from breaking completely over the tougher scenes. :-) But, just for the record, Austin is a super Grump with a capital G. Gah, but I wanted to book-tote whomp him upside the head a time or two.

A solid inspirational thread on the many facets of forgiveness brings even more depth to an already 'meaty' read.

Until I Met You is the second book in the Restoring Heritage series and, while I think you could read it as a standalone, there is quite a bit of character carryover from the first book so be prepared to meet a lot of folks and leap into their lives mid-story.  Readers who have read You Belong With Me will be happy to continue on with Luke and Hannah's story as well. Heritage, Michigan is definitely a happening place and there's more in store with another novel and novella to round out the series!

Shelter in the Storm

GIVEAWAY

BLOUNT, LAUREL
SHELTER IN THE STORM

In this moving Amish romance, two broken hearts find hope in each other after a terrible loss.

Unspeakable tragedy strikes the Amish hamlet of Johns Mill when an unstable Englischer opens fire in Hochstedler's General Store. In the aftermath, and under the media's spotlight, Joseph Hochstedler struggles to hold his shattered family together, drawing unexpected support from a faithful childhood friend.

Born with a serious heart defect, optimist Naomi Schrock has always longed for a life of service. So she rolls up her sleeves, determined to help Joseph cope with this terrible crisis. But dare she hope that his friendship will finally deepen into love?

As the media's obsession with the Hochstedler shooting escalates, Joseph and Naomi find themselves caught between tradition and compromise, lingering sorrows and uncertain hopes. And in the end, two people who have already lost far too much must find the courage to trust their hearts one last time.

My Review:

A couple of reader friends told me I needed to read this book so I dug it out of the middle of my bordering on out of control TBR pile and...yep...they were right. Devoured it in a day and still digesting all the wonderful nuances. Like this:

"When our world goes dark, we must hold hard to the rope of our faith, and trust Gott to lead us out." (p 38)

and this:

"We drive ourselves into confusing places when we take the reins of our lives into our own hands. It is Gott's job to guide us in whatever direction He deems best. Ours is to follow willingly, even when the path doesn't lie along a road we ourselves would choose." (p 276)

I mean, there were so many places where I just had to stop and bask in a phrase or a thought. So many times on this particular reading journey that filled my heart and nourished my soul even as I ached for these characters and what they've endured.

So, parts of Shelter in the Storm are hard to read, but the author doesn't leave her characters (or her readers) in despair. That doesn't mean that everything is wrapped up in a neat little bow by the end. In fact, there are some dangling threads that need to be caught up and followed in the next Johns Mill Amish novel (book two, Strength in the Storm is due out Feb 2022.) Still, there is enough closure in this this story to leave me satisfied even with the unanswered questions still whirling around in my mind. It's a clever writer who can leave a reader satiated and hungry for more at the same time.

I love the community Blount has created -- both Amish and Englisch -- in this sleepy little hamlet suddenly hurled into the limelight. I thought the author did a wonderful job of showing the roll media plays in sensationalizing a tragic event and even manipulating the narrative. Of course, it's all the more emotionally charged because of the Amish desire to live apart. Gah -- but parts of this story twisted my innards into knots!

Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the author has managed to infuse hope and the kind of peace in the midst of turmoil that can only come from placing trust in God. And, there's romance, of course. Sweetly unexpected and not without its own trauma. But there's laughter and tenderness too.

All in all an exceptional beginning to an incredible new series...and I believe this is Laurel Blount's debut Amish novel. I've been reading her contemporary novels for awhile now and I love her storytelling style.

Lost and Found Faith

GIVEAWAY

BLOUNT, LAUREL
LOST AND FOUND FAITH

A terrible tragedy nearly broke him.
Can love put him back together again?

Widowed history teacher Neil Hamilton has lost his way -- at work, with people and even with his faith. But Neil's shut-down existence is disrupted when a small toddler and his would-be foster mother, vibrantly pretty Maggie Byrne, come crashing into Neil's yard and his life. Can this absentminded teacher find himself again...and take a chance on love, too?

My Review:

What a beautiful, heartwarming, hope-infusing charm of a read! I didn't plan on reading Lost and Found Faith in one sitting but I did. I just couldn't bear to be pulled away from these characters and this setting so I had to see my way through to the happily ever after.

I always enjoy a small town romance and Blount has done a great job of building up this Georgian community. There are definitely some secondary characters that I want to see more of and I'll get that opportunity since this is the first in a new series! Woohoo!!!

I'm particularly intrigued with what the future has in store for the town sheriff (he's Maggie's brother) who I think will be the hero in the next book. And I'm anxious to catch up with no-nonsense Grandma Ruby and grumpy ol' Angelo who may be grizzly on the outside but is all squishy teddy bear on the inside. You know a book is a hit when you care as much about the secondary characters as you do the main ones.

Speaking of which, little Oliver is adorable! And Neil's wary first encounter with the little guy is equal parts tender and poignant. So much history there and back stories to uncover. With Maggie as well. Sometimes I got all teary-eyed and at other times I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat. And as far as first kisses go...m-a-g-i-c-a-l. And corkscrew toe-curling besides!

I have no clue when the second book is due to come out but the release date can't come soon enough for me!

The Lost Lieutenant

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!

VETSCH, ERICA
THE LOST LIEUTENANT

Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero -- he only wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a noble title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon his by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized from wounds incurred on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous -- and if he doesn't recall it in time -- will jeopardize not only his new marriage but someone's very life.

My Review:

published in 2020

I've been wanting to get started on Erica Vetsch's Regency series ever since it came out but I held out for an audible edition and was just about to give up hope when...tada...the audio book announcement came out. I flew over to audible and pre-ordered it right away. Woohoo, right? Wellllll....yes and no, 'cause I loved the book, but not the narrator so this is going to turn into two reviews: the book and the narrator's performance.

The Lost Lieutenant : the book

Love, love, love, love, loooovvvveeee! It was just as splendiferous as I knew it would be. Marriage of Convenience...well, more like marriage by royal decree...but yeeeessssss. Especially in Regency England!!!

Vetcsh has done an incredible job of throwing two wounded individuals together and then amping up the angst factor in all kinds of diabolical ways. Bwahahaha! There are sooooo many layers to this plot -- in character back stories, in present threats and in hints of impending danger. Love the sizzle of intrigue that sharpens the tale and makes the story that much more compelling.

The secondary characters are as vibrant as the hero and heroine. The kind you love to laugh over and cheer for (or boo whenever they slip onto the page.) And there's one particular gentleman just begging for his own story to be told...wait a sec, I'm gonna check...woohoo, yes, Marcus is the hero in book 2, The Gentleman Spy! I'm getting giddy just thinking about meeting up with him again.

Vetsch delivers absolutely everything I love in a Regency Romance and I'm super excited to continue on with the series...

But...

The Lost Lieutenant : the Audio

This was a hard listen for me. I usually go through an audiobook in a couple of days but it took me a week of diligent short listens to make my way to the end because I just couldn't take the narration in large doses. I feel awful saying that, but there was something so jarring about Mary Sarah's off-kilter cadence. Her voice rises and falls at odd times, sometimes trailing off mid sentence and then picking back up in a rush that is almost inaudible. A whispery, sing-song chanting at times, a drawn-out monotone at others. It was really hard to get past the narration in order to enjoy the story.

Attempted Abduction

GIVEAWAY

SMITH, SOMMER
ATTEMPTED ABDUCTION

Their only job is to keep a baby safe, no matter what...

After the attempted abduction of a newborn baby girl from the NICU, US Marshal Grayson Thorpe must move fast. He can't let a vicious criminal kingpin get to the child -- even if she is the man's daughter. Now Grayson and pediatric nurse Lauren Beck are risking their lives for the tiny innocent. But will it be enough to withstand one of the country's most dangerous criminals?

My Review:

Wooooosssshhhhh! That's the sound of my pent up breath finally being released. This one was a breath-snatcher. A nail-biter. A pulse-accelerator. Made all the edgier because the future of a wee little newborn baby is at stake!

Cue the disgruntled US Marshal who finds himself on baby watch and the snippy nurse he's stuck with for the duration. Grayson and Lauren crackle and spark from their first fraught encounter and continue on sparring as they jump from one perilous situation to the next. Until they get to know each other, that is (there's nothing like multiple near-death  experiences to prompt soul baring.)

A charged romantic suspense that begs to be read in one sitting.

Hostile Intent

GIVEAWAY

EASON, LYNETTE
HOSTILE INTENT

Ava Jackson entered the military shortly after high school, but her mother's illness has forced her to request an early discharge. She already lost her father while deployed, and there's no way she's going to let her mother die alone. But after a visit to the nursing facility where her mother lives, Ava is attacked walking back to her car. Fortunately, FBI Special Agent Caden Denning arives in time to help fight off her attacker.

Caden reveals to Ava that she may hold the key to the murders of three families, and he needs her help before anyone else is harmed. The hits show a pattern, and clearly the killer has an agenda. But if Caden and Ava can't discover what it is, Ava may be next on the hit list.

Bestselling author Lynette Eason concludes her latest suspense-filled series with a bang as secrets are revealed and the guilty are brought to justice.

My Review:

Whoa --- super intense and gritty. This last Danger Never Sleeps novel is definitely on the edgy side. Eason doesn't go overboard, but there's enough of a suggestion of certain things that sent my active imagination into overdrive. And the murders are heartbreaking!

Love the high-octane vibe that kept me racing through the pages. The danger never sleeps and neither did I! I had to marathon read my way to the end.

Love that Ava and Caden have an existing friendship. They are part of a large group of friends who have conveniently been pairing off during the course of the series. :-) That's given Caden ideas about Ava, but she's averse to complicating her life with romance. Understandable, since she's been dealing with a lot and it's only going to get a whole lot worse as a lethal killer with a creepy agenda continues his relentless hunt. And Ava is now in his crosshairs. Eeeeeeppppp!!!

Grab a comfort bear, some of your finest, soothing chocolate and you might want to have a blood pressure monitor on hand for the duration of this read!

Book Nerds and Boyfriends

GIVEAWAY

MONZON, SARAH
BOOK NERDS AND BOYFRIENDS

A novella collection featuring:

Bookishly Ever After -- Emory Blake is the ultimate bibliophile. She'd take curling up with a good novel over a night on the town any day of the week. But then best friend Tate Woodby accuses her of living between the pages of her paperbacks instead of the real world, and makes a bet that will force her to experience the adventures of her fictional friends...instead of just reading about them.

Literarilly for Keeps -- Literature professor Ashleight Darmody never imagined her life would turn into a classic trope, but that's exactly what happens when her sister Claire calls with a bizarre request -- quickly find a fake husband. Already divorced from a man who turned out to be other than he claimed, Ashleigh now has to pretend to be blissfully married to a stranger for the next five days. But when the lines of fiction and reality blur with each tick of the clock, could a temporary deal turn into something for keeps?

Novelly Upon a Time -- Harper Jones prides herself on the impeccable research she does for her novels, so when early reviews come pouring in claiming her romance is inauthentic, her editor suggests pulling her nose out of books and getting some real-life smooching experience. But her plans to do just that are thwarted by her archnemesis from high school who has recently returned to town. Suddenly she's left with an impossible decision -- kiss her worst enemy or kiss her three-book contract goodbye.

My Review:

So.
Much.
Fun.

I think I blew my nose inside out from snort laughing. And then -- kapow -- Monzon would sucker punch me with something so profound that I was left reeling. Love the way this author is able to blend such tender, heart stirring moments into her rom/coms. And she touches on some sobering subject matter that is pertinent to Christians everywhere.

But, oh, the funny bits, are hilarious!!! I mean, what bibliophile wouldn't want to read about  book nerds finally meeting their off-the-page, real-life heroes? Three bookish heroines I can completely relate to and the men who woo them. Happy, fan-girling sigh.

Courting His Amish Wife

GIVEAWAY

MILLER, EMMA
COURTING HIS AMISH WIFE

He offers her his hand, but will she ever take his heart?

When Levi Miller learns Eve Summy will be forced to marry her would-be attacker or get shunned, he marries her instead. Now husband and wife, but complete strangers, they must figure out how to live together in
harmony. But with Levi's family questioning the motives for their surprise wedding, getting to know each other -- and possibly finding love along the way -- is harder than they expected.

My Review:

Eeeep!!! Marriage of Convenience + Amish = reading heaven for me! Especially when the book is set in Hickory Grove, Delaware among the lively Miller clan. I love the way this author builds a community of faith with plenty of secondary characters to surround the striving couple with age old wisdom and humour and some plain talking when necessary.

Love the way Levi impulsively becomes Eve's hero but then doesn't quite know what to do with her! But he sure tries and is willing to own up to his mistakes and make things right. For her part, Eve is just plain overcome -- especially over Levi's gregarious, well meaning family which is so very different from her own. Shell shocked doesn't begin to describe it.

Lots of opportunity for growth as the romantic tension ratchets up, drawing these two together to deliver that ever long for happily ever after.
