The Widow of Larkspur Inn

BLACKWELL, LAWANA
THE WIDOW OF LARKSPUR INN

When Life Seemed its worst, Gresham awaited

Julia Hollis' opulent life in Victorian London crashes to pieces when her husband passes away. Worse, she is told by his bankers that he gambled away their fortune. Now, the family's hope rests on The Larkspur, an old abandoned coaching inn in the quaint village of Gresham.

Driven by dread and her desire to provide for her children, Julia decides to turn the dilapidated inn into a lodging house. But can she -- who was accustomed to servants attending to every need -- do what needs to be done and cope when boarders begin arriving? And then an eligible new vicar moves into town.

My Review:

Awesome start to a four book series! Published in 1998, I am amazed at the timeless quality in Blackwell's writing. So engaging -- the kind of story it is easy to lose yourself in. Love the setting and the time period. Reminds me of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels. A multi-faceted story that brings the village of Gersham to life. Quirky characters, personal tragedies, deep-rooted faith and sweet romance. This book has it all. I would love to see this made into a BBC mini-series!

And the jokes on me because this book is out of print so no giveaway today BUT The Widow of Larkspur Inn is currently free on KINDLE so everyone is a winner!!!! You can pick up your free copy here:

  7. I picked this book up this ebook awhile ago, but have yet to start it. Ever since your review of Lawana Blackwell's A Haven on Orchard Lane, I've been eager to read one of her books. It's nice to hear that she's been consistently well-liked by you. :-)

    1. Those are the only two books I've read by Lawana Blackwell and I've loved them both. There's an unhurried, let the story unfold at its own pace kind of air about her writing style.

    2. I really enjoy that type of pacing. Where some might like a novella or 200 page story where everything has to move fast, I say give me more story and details. :-)

  9. I love reading when I "get lost" in the story! It is almost like I'm the character that has been written about. Thanks for the review and giveaway. I'm looking forward to reading this book. d[dot]brookmyer[at]yahoo[dot]com
