MOSER, NANCY
THE PATTERN ARTIST
Can a lowly housemaid realize her own American dream?
Born into a life of hard work, English housemaid Annie Wood arrives in New York City in 1911 with his wealthy mistress. Wide-eyed with the possibilities America has to offer, Annie wonders if there's more for her than a life of service.
Annie chooses to risk everything, taps into courage she never knew she had, and goes off on her own, finding employment in the sewing department at Macy's department store. While at Macy's Annie catches the eye of a salesman at the Butterick Pattern Company. Through determination, hard work, and God's leading, Annie discovers a hidden gift: she is a talented fashion designer -- a pattern artist of the highest degree.
As she runs from ghosts of the past and focuses on the future, Annie enters a creative world that takes her to the fashion houses of Paris and into a life of adventure, purpose, and love.
My Review:
Published 2016 (yes, we've reached that point in the new year where the previous year's books are officially considered retro reads. Where did the time go?!)
Moser has captured the American pioneering spirit in this enthralling account of a young immigrant woman rising from the ashes of unforeseen misfortune. I was spellbound from the very first page. Loved the historical details! I've sewn a Butterick pattern or two in my time so it was really interesting to see the inner workings of the company. As wells as an insider's view of Macy's Department Store. If only sales service was as exceptional today as it was back then!
Annie is a young woman with a lot of potential who pushes ahead with courage and faith in order to follow her dream. There is a certain naivety in the way she views the world at the beginning of the story but struggling through obstacles and hardships take their toll. But Annie is a survivor and she has the love and support of new friendships to help her carry on. Though she drags her heels when it comes to a certain potential suitor!
There are plenty of stunning plot twists -- some so unexpected that I had to stop reading and get my bearings. The Pattern Artist is the kind of story that entertains and inspires...and leaves you wanting more.

I don't consider 2016 books as retro reads...LOL ;-)
DeleteI know -- when does a book become a retro read??? I give it six months into the next year before I brand it retro -- and that's just because there are so many current years books to embrace that I'm afraid I'll get even farther behind! Such a reading dilemma.
DeleteI've only read one other book by Nancy Moser but I now have several of her earlier books on hold at my library so stay tuned for 'true' retro reads from this author on future Saturday giveaways. LOL Good luck, Trixi.
Thanks Kav, it does sound really good. Thanks for the chance. iamabho (at) gmail (dot) com

DeleteThis one sounds interesting. I have fond memories of picking out Butterick (and other brand) patterns with my mom so that she could sew our clothes. Thanks for the review and the giveaway.
ReplyDeletemomrain(AT)aol(DOT)com
I just checked out the Butterick website and they are still rocking it! What a legacy. Good luck, Loraine.
DeleteOh my! Looking at this cover brought back a lot of memories for me! My mom made all of our dresses when we were growing up. There were 5 of us girls plus our mom. We would love when we got to go shopping for some new material and a pattern. This sounds like a great historical romance. Thanks for your review and giveaway. d[dot]brookmyer[at]yahoo[dot]com
ReplyDeleteGoodness, five girls? Your mom must have been non-stop sewing. My mum used to sew everything too -- even coats and jackets. She was brilliant but didn't pass the brilliance gene down to me. I'm more of a crafty sewer and buttonholes still elude me. Good luck, Donna.
DeleteSeveral years ago Nancy Moser was in town for a writer's retreat with Deborah Raney and Stephanie Grace Whitson. They spent an hour or so with my book club. Since then, I've been very interested in reading Nancy's books. This one is of special interest because of the sewing aspect. Thanks for your review and the giveaway.

It's so interesting that things of my childhood are now relics. I vividly remember my mother pulling out the patterns and spreading them on the floor. My daughter wouldn't know what a pattern was!
