Honor Bound

GIVEAWAY

BRIDGEMAN, HALLEE
HONOR BOUND

You can't override the heart.

I mayhem odd to seek peace by moving to a war-torn African country, but for medical missionary Dr. Cynthia Myers, it provided a way to escape a shallow life of unearned wealth, a philandering fiance, and a father now square in the public eye as Vice President of the United States. At least here she knows her work and life have meaning. But all that is thrown into chaos when she fails to save the life of a local warlord's mortally wounded son.

As part of the Army Special Forces A-Team on a mission to capture and subdue the warlord, Captain Rick Norton is compelled to use deadly force to save Cynthia's life. Enraged at the violence she witnessed and riddled with guilt that men died because of her, Cynthia doesn't want to like anything about Rick and his team -- but an unexpected attraction is taking hold.

With two members of his team badly injured and rebels in hot pursuit, Rick will have to draw upon all his strength and cunning to get her out alive...because he's beginning to think that, despite their differences, they just may be able to make a life together.

My Review:

Hallee Bridgeman, where have you been all my reading life?! Publishing books that I obviously haven't picked up, that's what! Well, that's about to change, starting with this series!

I can't believe I loved this story so much. I mean, it's pretty far outside my carefully contained bibliophile comfort zone. I like to hunker down under a warm fuzzy bubble that may include rainbows and unicorns yet more than half the book is spent in the jungle...well, rain forest...evading a ruthless warlords's rebel forces. Rick is the captain of an elite team and there's tons of army jargon and action scenes -- all beautifully choreographed and vividly described and I found the whole reading experience breathtaking! Who me?! I'm gobsmacked.

And I can't gush enough over the guys in this team, praying each of them gets their own story. I see there's a prequel that I've missed but it's in my Amazon cart now. Love the camaraderie Bridgeman has created. The way they work seamlessly together, utilizing individual strengths for the good of the team. They can be intense one minute and cracking jokes the next. Sardonic humour never looked so good! And the nicknames they've given each other! Rick's is priceless!

And then there's the romance. Wowzer, some great romantical tension zinging between Cynthia and Rick. Everybody can see it, but they all know it's doomed. They come from very different places -- from social class to ideology -- these two are all clashing wills and sizzling heat. I will confess to wanting to slap Cynthia upside the head a time or two but she learns from her mistakes and does some soul searching and growth happens and then...whaaaatttt???? I nearly had heart failure! My nails are shredded from desperately hanging on til the very end. Bwahahaha!

I wouldn't really classify this as romantic suspense though. More action adventure. I'm pretty sure Hallee Bridgeman is a pseudonym for a Delta Force soldier who, obviously, must stay below the radar for security reasons. :-)

I listened to the audible edition of this book (yes, I know I had a paperback copy but...) Libby McNight gave a riveting performance and I was completely hooked on both the words and the narrator.
