My Review:

What a great theme for a novella set! Deported, indentured, imprisoned, sold into slavery -- these captive brides must overcome untold difficulties with the aid of stalwart heroes determined to set them free. The kind of page-turners that held me captive and though I only planned to read one novella a day I ended up devouring the whole book in two days.

Each story is only about 50 pages, but they still pack a punch and my emotions ran high. I'd whoosh a huge sigh of relief over the satisfying conclusion of one story only to have my heart jump back into my throat when I turned the page  and started reading the next one. Intense situations, deplorable conditions and evil injustice rankled something fierce. And yet, despite the circumstances each heroine possesses an indomitable spirit which sees her through her trials and into the happily-ever-after of her dreams.

Diverse stories written in distinctive styles make this a collection to cherish.

My Review:

Delightfully Christmasy. In fact the holiday is practically its own setting. And this is the feel-good-believe-in-Christmas-miracles kind of read that tugs at your heartstrings but ultimately leaves you basking in the glow of all the hopes of the season. Truly scrumptious.

And a certain deputy plays a huge role in readerly enjoyment. You can't go wrong with a hero grimly trying to put the past aside. Poor Matt has a difficult relationship with his father and it's colored his entire adult life. It's time for him to see beyond the hurt and appreciate the awesome guy he is and I know just the the people to help him with that.

Cue the Christmas music because Lacie is determined to make this the best Christmas ever for her grieving niece and somehow Matt ends up helping out...a lot. Blissful sigh. There are so many cute big tough deputy going all marshmallow soft over a certain little princess scenes that I'll issue this warning: be prepared to become mired in swoons.

A sublimely toe-curling, heart-warming and Christmas-celebrating romance. Hope y'all find a copy of The Deputy's Holiday Family in your stocking!

My Review:

Well, my heart is in a hundred knots tied so tight it hurts! I really didn't want to read Amy's story. Really, I didn't. But I love this series and the way Johnnie Alexander spins a tale so I took the plunge and got emotionally pummeled for my trouble. But it's all good -- pain means growth, both for heroines and readers.

So, this is the third book in the Misty Willow series, but each book reads as a standalone. Though fans of the series will be thrilled to meet up with AJ and Shelby and Brett and Dani (heroes and heroines from books one and two) in this final story.

I love homecoming stories -- the power to change that comes from embracing what you ran away from int he first place. Lots of scope for angsty plotlines which follow both Amy and Gabe to Misty Willow. She plays self-defeating mind games that keep her frozen in a dark place. He is burdened by a guilt that isn't his to bear. Two hurting souls, once young and innocent and on the verge of fledgling love. But a whole lot of living has happened in the past decade or so and it seems like they will never capture their lost love.

Sometimes I had to put this book down and practice deep breathing exercises to calm myself down before I could bring myself to face more of the harrowing journey that leads to Amy and Gabe's happily-ever-after. In fact, I will confess to sneaking a peek at the last page -- a very short but hope-filled epilogue -- just to convince myself to keep reading. Yes, I get that involved with my characters.

And if the romantical journey isn't enough to leave a reader gnashing her teeth and pulling out her hair, a villainous subplot nearly tipped me over the edge. I do so enjoy seething over a truly conniving bad guy...as long as he gets his comeuppance by the end.

An excruciatingly thrilling read that broke my heart in places.

My Review:

This is another book that was brought to my attention during the last Reader's Choice Week. Love you guys and the new titles you share with me!

Isn't this a pretty cover? Very distinctive from anything out there, especially in the Amish genre. The pretty lilac colour  makes me smile and invites me to stay awhile. Which I did to immense reader satisfaction.

I think this might be the first time I've read a novella set where all the stories are written by the same author.  Lillard takes her readers back to the Amish community in Wells Landing, Oklahoma which is the setting for six of books in the aptly titled Wells Landing series. You don't need to have read those books as these three stories read fine as standalones though they share some of the same characters from the series.

Love the way each novella centers around a quilting circle and how the members look out for each other. They gently insert themselves into three rocky romances much to the delight of this reader. Funny, sweet and poignant.

My Review:

Fantasy and the bible collide in this unusual tale of loss. An epic battle between good and evil ensues as twelve-year old Sam opens a proverbial Pandora's box in his quiet rural neighbourhood. Smucker has a lyrical writing style that reflects the air of a seasoned oral storyteller. He knows how to spin an intriguing tale that leaves the reader with more questions than answers by the conclusion.

Told entirely from Sam's point of view -- Sam as an old man -- both in present day and reminiscing  that fateful summer when he was twelve. This was definitely an 'out of my comfort zone' read and while I enjoyed Smucker's writing style and cleverly crafted tale, I just couldn't connect with Sam at all. I couldn't reconcile the rather miserable recluse with the desperate young boy who lived through something so astounding. Lived through and was touched by it in a powerful way. And yet it seems like he didn't live his life reflecting that.

There's this huge gap between Sam's preteen self and the aged narrator. Frankly, I didn't like the glimpse of the man he became and that was a huge disappointment. And a tad depressing, though it did encourage me to ponder my own spiritual encounters and whether I have allowed them to reflect positively in my own life.

Chock-full of sweet Christmas romances! The novellas are on the short side -- just under 50 pages  -- but each one is well developed with captivating characters which ensures a satisfying read. Every single time. There's warmth and laughter and the joy of finding love in unexpected ways. A strong collection that will bless historical romance fans during the holiday season...or any time for that matter.

My Review:

If ever there were two people so aptly suited for one another but think they aren't...well, that would be Louise and Jesse. I might have bald spots on my scalp from tearing my hair out. Jesse so focused on planning for an ideal future that he doesn't recognize the beginning of his future is right in front of him. And Louise has turned inward, nursing the hurts from her previous marriage while striving to make a new life for herself in the shadow of a heartbreaking secret. To say these two clash would be an understatement but they challenge each other too. And there's never a dull moment when they are together. Which seems to happen a lot thanks to some not so subtle matchmaking.

And then Jesse turns into a dunderhead. There's no other way to describe it! I gave him a tongue-lashing that would blister a sailor's ears but Jesse paid me no mind. Argh! It's lucky I wasn't physically there or I would have smacked him up side the head with a cast iron frying pan. Stubborn, foolish man. Gah! No need to despair though. The author manages to wrestle him under control and melted my heart at the same time. If you like a healthy dose of angst with your sweet and tender romance then this is definitely the book for you.

My Review:

Intense. Sincere. Full of laughter and tears. Holley Gerth has a way of writing the reader into the conversation so it feels like you're sitting across the table in some cozy cafe as you share your story with the best listener in the world. She writes with the kind of heart and candor that has the power to encourage change.

A much needed change where I am concerned. Because -- true confession time -- I'm a scaredy-cat. I've read the fictional accounts of fiercehearted heroines and basked in their glory while knowing deep down that I could never live as fully or bravely. But then Ms. Gerth comes along and starts changing my mind. I start thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could become the fiercehearted heroine of my own story.

Her words are sweet and smooth and encouraging as she candidly bears her soul and invites me to do the same. As I dig deep I find a hidden core of fierceness I didn't know was there. I realize that I can be that woman -- the kind *"who defends like a warrior and weeps like a girl." And I suddenly want to *"chase Jesus with a tender, world-changing wildness." Squuueeeeallll!!!!! A new series from one of my favourite LIS authors!!!!!! And it's focused around a family of law enforcers. In Texas! Take a look at that cover! Only I want to know why the hero is riding away from me. Yoohoo -- Gavin, I'm over here! Damsel in distress! Heeeelllppp!!!! Sigh. He's ignoring me. Probably because it's taking all his concentration to keep tabs on the love of his life.

Lexie's in terrible danger and Gavin's sure he's the only one who can keep her safe. He might be a little biased about that. And a whole lot controlling, but you've gotta love a hero with deep issues who wears his heart on his sleeve. Insert swoon emoji here.

For her part, Lexie is so over Gavin. (Not!) She's still nursing hurt feelings and is fiercely protective of her teen brother so there's no way Gavin is going to get past her defenses this time. And my, but it was fun to watch him do exactly that. Lots of sparks flying along with bullets in this heart-in-throat romantic suspense!

My Review:

Jane Kirkpatrick finds the most interesting true-life heroines to highlight in her fictional biographies. Lesser known women who have lived exemplary lives. Women who define the pioneering spirit. Women like Jennie Pickett.

I'm astounded at everything she went through and what she accomplished despite so many hardships. An intelligent woman with a learning disability that made reading difficult who becomes a doctor? That's something to shout about in this day and age but in the late 1800s it's inconceivable. And Jennie's story is rife with emotional ups and downs though she remains steadfast in her faith.

Captivating, compelling and mind boggling. If you enjoy biographies of strong women who make a difference while overcoming insurmountable odds then this is definitely the book for you.

My Review:

True confession: I'm a tad shy of giddy over this new series -- and beyond grateful to whoever brought it to my attention during one of my Reader's Choice Weeks.

First off -- I adore fairy tale retellings -- I'm kind of compulsively crazy about them so I get butterflies in my tummy whenever I discover one in the Christian Fiction genre. But to add Amish into the mix? Be still my heart. It won't stop yoyoing around in an ecstatic frenzy because that combination is sweet perfection.

Love the seamless way Price has woven inspiration throughout the story. There are many stop-dead-in-your-tracks-and-ponder-that-thought moments. I love how both Belle and Adam grow as they dare to live their faith bravely. And it takes a lot of courage to banish past heartache and face the thoughtless cruelty of townsfolk who should definitely know better.

While the author stays true to the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, she has also created a unique romance -- Belle and Adam's love story is fresh and poignant, even funny in places. And she does an amazing job with the 'beastly' qualities Adam brings to the story. While Belle's gentle kindness coupled with a good dose of pluckiness keeps her 'beast' off kilter. So much fun to read -- and to pick out the fairy tale elements along the way.

This is the first book I've read by Sarah Price but it sure won't be the last. Especially since she's set up the next two books in the series so perfectly...at least, I think she has. Definitely a Cinderella retelling is coming out next -- there's a sweet peek of it at the end of Belle. But there's also another character, Sadie, who is a bit of a mystery and I'm thinking her story might just be a Snow White adaptation, but that's just my wild guess.

My Review:

They say everyone has a twin somewhere which is all well and good unless your 'twin' happens to be the sister of drug cartel lord. Everyone is convinced Danielle is Adriana Garcia -- even law enforcement at first. Lots of tangled webs to weave through before Danielle is cleared. At least, the good guys know who she is but the bad guys? They are still coming on strong. Danger and intrigue clash with an inconvenient romance and make this a stellar read.

Christmas Double Cross is the second book in the Texas Ranger Holidays: A Season of Danger continuity series but I had no trouble reading it as a standalone. And I have no idea how I missed the first book, Thanksgiving Protector by Sharon Dunn last month. I have to play catch up now, because I think I'll understand Colt a bit more once I've read that first book. He's pretty hard on himself over something that happened in the past and I have a feeling it happened in Thanksgiving Protector. I'll have to read it to be sure. But it keeps him wary and super sensitive and brings some delicious tension to the story.
