LADIES OF INTRIGUE

Ladies of Intrigue : can truth and love prevail when no one is as they appear?

The Gentleman Smuggler's Lady (c2017) - Cornish Coast, 1815 - When a prim and proper governess returns to England from abroad, she expects to comfort her dying father -- not fall in love with a smuggler. With Helen Fletcher keep Isaac Seaton's unusual secret?

The Doctor's  Woman (c 2016) - Dakota Territory, 1862 - Emmy Nelson, daughter of a missionary doctor, and Dr. James Clark, city doctor aspiring to teach, find themselves working side by side at Fort Snelling during the Dakota Uprising. That is when the real clash of ideals begins.

A House of Secrets (c2017) - St. Paul, Minnestoa, 1890 - Ladies' Aide Chairwoman Amanda Carston resolves to clean up St. Paul's ramshackle housing, starting with the worst of the worst: a "haunted" house that's secretly owned by her beau -- a home that's his only means of helping brothel girls escape from the hands of the city's most infamous madam.

My Review:

An alluring collection of previously published novellas. I hadn't read any of them before so I was in seventh heaven. These heroes and their heroines kept me in fits of swoons and toe-curls. High-spirited women who are the perfect match for their adventuring men. Lots of clashing wills and sparks flying! Sheer delight! And the joy of witty banter made me giddy. Have to confess that The Gentleman Smuggler's Lady is my favourite of the three stories because...well...Regency! Smugglers on the Cornish Coast! Really, do I have to say more? But the American stories are almost as good.

A perfect collection for discerning fans of Historical Romance.

  1. I have to agree with you on "The Gentlemen Smuggler's Lady" as being a favorite of mine as well! It reminded me of Poldark and Isaac as Ross Poldark 😊💖

But really, you can't go wrong with any of Michelle Griep's stories! This is a fabulous novella collection.

    1. Oh yes -- Poldark...haven's seen all the episodes but enough to know that's a great comparison!

  2. I don't believe I have read any of these. I hadn't realized how many books or novellas she has published - was looking on Goodreads on Michelle's author page. So, these stories are from three different of those hefty Barbour Collections books from the last few years - Regency Brides, Courageous Brides, and Rags to Riches Romances. Thanks!

    1. That's interesting info. I just knew I hadn't read any of them but I know some people were kinda put out because they didn't realize this wasn't an all new release. It does get confusing when novellas from various collections get re-released in new collections. Good luck, CC!

  8. I have read 2 of these in the Barbour Collections. I thought The Gentleman Smuggler's Lady was very good, but A House of Secrets was a bit dark for my tastes. I have The Doctor's Woman in The Courageous Brides Collection but haven't gotten to that one yet.

A lot of these novellas are being rereleased back to the authors after a certain amount of time goes by. Case in point is one by Joanne Bischof called Something New. It's tied in loosely to her Blackbird Mountain books, so yes and yes! It's coming out Sept 1 as a standalone but I'm anxious to read it so I'm considering buying The Heirloom Collection to read it. I guess the main thing I do is when I see a novella, I double check to see if it says something like, "originally published as". It pays to do a little research and not be disappointed with purchasing the same book twice. :)

    1. Yes, definitely pays to your homework. I'm wary of buying novellas now. I do think they should post the previous publication date and the book the novella was in first to make it easier for readers to figure out if they've read the novellas. That was done with a few Amish collections and that was super helpful. This one just has the copyright dates for each novella, but not the title of the work they were published in so that would take more sleuthing. Lucky for me, my library likes to buy up the novellas without me even having to ask them. :-)
