THE NOBLE GUARDIAN
Samuel Thatcher : Gynical Lawman, Mysterious Protector, Nobel Guardian
Life couldn't be better for Abigail Gilbert -- but it's been a long time coming. Having lived with a family who hated her, love is finally within reach. Abby embarks on a journey across the English countryside to marry of the most prestigious gentlemen bachelors in the land -- until highwayman upset her plans and threaten her life.
Horse patrol captain Samuel Thatcher arrives just in time to save Abby. But to him she's simply another victim in a job he's come to despise. Tired of the dark side of humanity, he intends to buy land and retire.
Abby pleads with him to escort her on the rest of her journey. He refuses until she offers him the thing he desperately needs to achieve his goal: money. Delivering her safely will earn him more than enough to settle into a quiet life.
So begins an impossible trek for the cynical lawman and the proper lady. Each will be indelibly changed by the time they reach her betrothed, if they don't kill one another first -- or fall in love.
My Review:
Sqqqqqueeeeeealllll! Swoonilicious Regency alert! Third and final (sob!) book in Michelle Griep's Bow Street Runners series! And it comes complete with a cynical, brooding, taciturn hero to send readers into a rush of romantical delirium. Heavy sigh and heart palpitations. Samuel Thacker definitely possesses toe-curling qualities. His rigid sense of justice makes it impossible for him to ignore a lady in distress and Abby is definitely that. Naively so. And stubborn to boot. Love his befuddlement when she stands up to him. And then there's baby Emma, a heart stealer in every scene, especially when the stern captain falls under her spell.
Lots of action and adventure and more than a hint of danger, including some knockout fight scenes, make this a page-turner of a reader. With plot twists galore! The kind of escape read made for a lazy summer afternoon.
Sidenote: I had a bit of an issue with what I felt were inappropriate uses of the Lord's name in the beginning of the book. Not quite out right blasphemy -- like " Oh my..." but using God in the context of an exclamation, not in the form of a petition and not quite a curse, but used in a casual way. And it's strange because they all occurred within the first 72 pages and then the remaining 241 pages were perfectly fine. There were only six phrases but they jarred me out of the story each time.

I have heard so much about this author, that I would love to read something from her. Thanks for sharing this today. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net
ReplyDeleteShe's an amazing storyteller, Lori. Hope you get to read something from her soon. Good luck, Lori!
DeleteLoved this book & your review! I read the NetGalley version and I don't remember the issues about using God in a negative way. And I'm really particular about that! Makes me wonder if they were added to the story after the galleys were edited. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteOk, I see what you mean. Already 3 times in the 1st few pgs of the book. I deleted the galley bc we're supposed to after reading/reviewing, but read this in the sample on Amazon. Rather disconcerting
DeleteIt discombobulated me to the point where every time the God or Lord appeared, I stopped to analyze the usage (and there are lots of times when the Lord's name is used in supplication -- both hero and hero are Christian.) But then, poof -- the rest of book was fine...that's what I found really odd.
DeleteOdd for sure, but I'm glad! I found myself analyzing the usage in the sample I read on Amazon (knowing the hero was a Christian), and it just didn't set well. I love this author & I hope she'll refrain from doing that in future novels.
DeleteI have seen this cover, probably on the publisher website, but really hadn't read about the story basics.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very popular item two Reader Giveaways ago...since it crosses genres between Historical and suspense and well, it's Michelle Griep! Good luck, CC!
DeleteYAY for The Noble Guardian!!! I have eagerly been anticpating this book as I have the other two books in this series. It sounds gushingly fabulous! (swoony sigh!) I am REALLY looking forward to reading this last book of the Bow Street Runners! Your review boasts an amazing finish to this series!! I'm about to start another Michelle Griep novel tonight. Eeeep! Good luck, Caryl.
DeleteI enjoy her books but like you I find it disturbing when the Lord’s name is used in such a casual way. Thank you for sharing.

We are like-minded my book twin. :-) Good luck, Lucy!
DeleteI enjoyed all of the Bow Street Runners books but this was my favorite. I was glad I was reading a paper copy so I could look at the cover often. Samuel is a great hero. I liked that Abby wasn't intimidated by him and loved little Emma. Don't enter me in the book drawing since I have a copy.
ReplyDeleteBwahahahaha! Yes, pausing for a little cover love was a real bonus with this paperback. I loved the dynamics between Samuel and Abby -- and that she had the backbone to stand up to him...even when she should have trusted him and kept quiet. lol Thanks for chiming in, Pam.
