Vow of Justice

GIVEAWAY
EASON, LYNETTE
VOW OF JUSTICE

Playing dead might just get her killed.

FBI Special Agent Lincoln St. John is living his own personal nightmare. When the woman he loves, Allison Radcliffe, is killed, he devotes himself to tracking down the killers and making them pay for their crimes. He expected it to be a challenge. What he never expected was to find Allison very much alive shortly after her "murder."

As his anger and hurt mix with relief, Linc isn't sure how he's supposed to feel. One thing he does know for sure: he and Allison will have to work together to stop a killer before she dies a second time -- this time for good.

My Review:

What a great way to read out the old year with this thrilling blockbuster conclusion to the Blue Justice series. And woohoo -- the gangs all here, ready to help Linc out of a deadly game of cat and mouse. I love the St. John family -- the teasing banter that switches to professional efficiency when the need arises. These siblings are always there for each other, no questions asked and together they are a force to be reckoned with.

Linc and Allison have a history -- partners and friends who are on the verge of something much more when Allison is 'killed.' What follows is such a tense, whip-lash frenzy of a suspenseful tale that I'm still reeling from the fallout. And the romance has the same kind of desperate edge to it. Another enthralling page-turner from one of my favourite romantic suspense authors.

No worries if you haven't read any of the other books in this series -- Vow of Justice can be read as a standalone, but I bet once you do you won't be able to stop at just this one. :-) And -- eeep -- that epilogue!!!! My cheeks still hurt from grinning so much!!!! :

The Captain and Miss Winter

GIVEAWAY
BRITTON, SALLY
THE CAPTAIN AND MISS WINTER

A captain seeking to repair the past and the daughter of a fallen gentleman, searching for a treasure that will change their lives forever.

The end of the Napoleonic wars comes as a relief to Caspar Graysmark, but before he can settle into the comfortable life of an English lord he has a duty to the people of France. A treasure lies hidden in the heart of the forest, stolen gold that would save the lives of many who lost everything during the war. In his quest, Caspar stumbles across a hidden cottage in the woods, and a different sort of treasure altogether.

Scarlett, living with her sister and grandmother, belongs nowhere. Her father's mistakes led to their exile from England and their banishment into the forest. The cold winter months have taken their toll on Scarlett's spirits and her grandmother's health. The Englishman who arrives at Scarlett's door, looking more like a bear than a captain of the British army, reminds her of all she lost to the war.

With winter drawing to a close, Caspar must find the missing gold, but his quest to right the wring of war has changed. Can Scarlett let him rescue her, too?

The Captain and Miss Winter is based on the story of Snow White and Rose Red, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. It is a sweet/clean romance novella, and is Book 2 in a series of Regency retellings. The stories can be read in any order.

My Review:

SQUUEEEEEPPPP!!!! A Regency Fairy Tale Retelling?! I've gone and swooned into a puddle on the floor at the very thought. And that this novel is inspired by one of my absolute favourite fairy tales -- Snow White and Rose Red -- I'm in such ecstasy I have no words. Except...

Sublimely divine from the very first page! Britton has combined the pacing and cadence of a fairy tale with the scrumptious courtly manners and playful banter of the Regency era. It's a lethal combination if you happen to be a bibliophile of my ilk. Though short (novella), the story has all the crucial ingredients of a longer novel and it makes for just as satisfying a read.

A hero with a troubled past set on putting things to rights. A wronged heroine doomed to be an outcast the rest of her life. The hope that tragedy might be overcome and a happily ever after possible. My heart is flip-flopping just thinking about it. And, oh, the dialogue, the shy glances, the yearning to fan the fires of that sweet spark of attraction...BUT...Scarlett has secrets, Caspar is on a quest and there's danger lurking in the woods! Squeal! Eep! Squueeeepppp!!!!

This is my first time sampling Sally Britton's storytelling style and I'm hooked. I have my Good Reads friends to thank for the introduction since I usually read Christian Fiction and I trust them to guide me to clean sweet romances -- especially where Regencies are concerned! If you like Sarah M. Eden, Mimi Matthews, Sarah E. Ladd and Julie Klassen, you'll want to add Sally Britton to your list.

Obsessed

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
DALEY, MARGARET
OBSESSED

Another romantic suspense from USA Today Bestselling Author, Margaret Daley.

Stalker. Arson. Murder.

When a stalker ruthlessly targets people she loves, a woman flees her old life, creating a new identity as Serena Remington. Her plan to escape the madman and lead him away from family and friends worked for three years. Now he's back. With nowhere else to run, her only choice is war. Quinn Taylor, her neighbor and a firefighter with expertise in arson, comes to her aid, but will it be in time to save her?

My Review:

published in 2018

Great Dane meets mini poodle and fluff happens! Brutus is a hardworking arson dog who lets firefighter Quinn hang out with him during their off hours. Suzie's a pint-sized diva and a part-time comfort dog who knows just how to soothe Serena's frazzled nerves. It might be love at first sight for these wonder dogs but their humans are a little harder to train. :-)

There's a deliciously stalkerish vibe to this  edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense. Daley knows how to draw out the tension, creating the right balance of chills and thrills sure to keep an avid armchair sleuth turning pages (or in my case, rabidly listening.) Love the way the romance merges with the suspense (and I'm not just talking about the dogs here!) And the bad guy is pure evil (shivers running over my goosebumps!)

This is the second book in Daley's Everyday Heroes series and I love that each book features a canine (or two.) It can easily be read as a standalone. I'm thrilled that this indie pubbed series is available in both paperback and audible formats as well as the usual ebook edition. I listened to the audible version narrated by Kim Niemi who did a great job of bringing this story to life.

Like There's No Tomorrow

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!
EIDE, CAMILLE
LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW

What if love means letting go?

Scottish widower Ian MacLean is plagued by a mischievous grannie, bitter regrets, and an ache for something he'll never have again. His only hope for freedom is to bring his grannie's sister home from America.. But first, he'll have to convince her lovely companion, Emily, to let her go.

Emily Chapman devotes herself to foster youth and her beloved Aunt Grace. Caring for others quiets a secret fear she holds close to her heart. But when Ian appears, wanting to whisk Grace off to Scotland, everything Emily needs to protect -- including her heart -- is at risk.

Set in central Oregon's high desert and the lowlands of Scotland, Like There's No Tomorrow is an amusing yet heart-tugging love story about two kind, single caretakers, two quirky, old Scottish sisters bent on reuniting, and too many agendas. It's a tale of family, fiery furnaces, falling in love, faith and the gift of each new day.

My Review:

published in 2014

"Faith isn't expecting God to give us good things. It's trusting the goodness of God in the face of tragedy."

Product Warning:  It is recommended that readers have a stockpile of tissue on hand before opening this book. And those with very tender hearts will require a supply of comfort food and smelling salts to safely navigate their way through to the very end.

Possible side-effects: Shuddering sighs which can lead to painful hiccoughs, blotchy skin, bloodshot eyes, a red nose and a period of melancholia due to literary separation anxiety after completing the read are all potential side-effects. If symptoms persist, follow this book up with a romantic comedy.

My heart is skewered, my brain is muddled and my emotions are a yoyoing mass of mush after finishing Like There's No Tomorrow. Sigh. And the significance of that title?! Goosebumps! Sort of feel bruised from the inside out after this read and I'm not sure I can explain why with any sort of coherency. But I'll try.

First off -- it's an epic romance. Full of heart-wrenching emotions, painful spiritual growth and the challenges that come from living in a broken world. Eide has crafted such a powerful love story. I experienced a full gamut of emotions during my read --  from full out belly-laughs to sniffling through my tears.

And I did a lot of swooning over Ian. Hello! Scottish hero alert! Angry and hurt with a wee bit of brooding thrown in. Happy sigh. And what a faith journey! A man who wrestles with God and comes out the better for it. And when he sets his mind to wooing Emily -- whooeee -- toe-curling stuff!

Emily's tragic past, the secret she harbors, her need for control -- well, it all jumbles up into a tangled mess that only God (and true love) can sort out.

A great cast of secondary characters (octogenarins Maggie and Grace are a hoot!) provide support and conflict in equal measures. And the Scottish setting still makes me giddy!

I can't believe this is the first book I've read by Camille Eide-- in fact I hadn't even heard of her until just a few months ago when I began to see posts about her new release popping up on social media. I was thrilled to discover two of her books on audible and this is the first one I've listened to. Becky Doughty's narration is superb. Really brought these characters to life and the way she portrays Ian's accent...swoony hyperventilatingly good! lol

The Inn at Hidden Run

GIVEAWAY
NEWPORT, OLIVIA
THE INN AT HIDDEN RUN

Tree of Life -- every family tree grows an unforgettable story.

Meri's family has been producing doctors for so many generations that no one remembers why, so when she flunks out of medical school, she runs as far from her family in Tennessee as she can. In the small mountain town of Canyon Mines, Colorado, she takes a job at the Inn at Hidden Run B&B. And waits. It's only a matter of time until they show up.

What she doesn't count on is genealogist Jillian Parisi-Duffy and her father, Nolan, having her back when it takes everything she has to stay and face the truth that only her family history can reveal. While Nolan works on keeping Meri calm -- and in town -- Jillian draws out gems of information Meri doesn't know she has and arranges them into a fascinating mosaic of a desperate epidemic in Memphis history.

But none of that changes the fact that Meri's family arrives to haul her back to her "real" life and duty to her family tree of doctors. If Meri disappears again, Nolan and Jillian may be out of time.

My Review:

"Sometimes in order to understand ourselves, we have to understand our families." (p 60)

There's something you need to know about me. I'm a stunted closet genealogist. I'm that person who watches and re-watches episodes of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. and literally sobs my heart out over the stories he uncovers for his celebrity clients. I'm crying partly because the ancestor stories are so moving and partly because I can't find any stories related to the names and dates on my family tree. So I live vicariously through Mr. Gates....and now through this series. So Olivia Newport gets a hearty, fan-girling Eeeeepppp!!!!! from me. :-)

Though, I have to say that the synopsis is a tad misleading. While this book is about Meri's struggles with her family's expectations, it's told from the points of view of genealogist Jillian and her lawyer/mediator father, Nolan. At least, the contemporary time line is because...insert an image of me in wild biblio-girl jitterbugging abandon...this is a dual timeline story!!!!!!  And the 1878 Memphis epidemic timeline is told from Eliza's perspective. Whoa! Have the tissue boxes handy!

To say I was completely riveted by both stories would be an understatement. I loved the way Newport developed the plots to the point where they collide together in a Eureka! moment Meri and her family will never forgot. But there's a lot of angst and dysfunction before that happens.

Absolutely love the father/daughter dynamics between Nolan and Jillian. There's teasing and banter but a deep, underlying understanding between the two. And Nolan is full of patriarchal gems of wisdom -- "...the work will always be there later, but the moment is only here now." (p 52) The book is full of gentle undercurrents about family and faith and the way who we are is built upon who our ancestors were.

Now I'm super excited to get reading book two in The Tree of Life series -- In the Cradle Lies (a November 2019 release.) Then I'll be impatiently waiting for May and November 2020 when the next Tree of Life books will be released. Woot! Lots of Happy Reading in store for me!
