Piecing it all Together

GIVEAWAY

GOULD, LESLIE
PIECING IT ALL TOGETHER

When everything's fallen apart, can she piece together the truths?

After Savannah Mast's fiance dumps her a week before their wedding, she flees California for the safety of her Amish grandmother's farm near Nappannee, Indiana, where she used to spend her summers. Savannah intends her stay to be brief, but when an Amish woman goes into labor in the middle of a blizzard and needs Savannah's help, she finds herself unexpectedly entangled in their family's drama. The woman's oldest daughter, Miriam, goes missing and Savannah's childhood friend Tommy Miller is implicated.

Jane Berger, the local historian and owner of a nearby quilt shop, tells her a similar tale of another woman's disappearance in the 1800s, inspiring Savannah to do all she can to help with the search for Miriam. But when Tommy's own cousin testifies against him, she isn't sure who she can trust. And when event stir up painful memories of her mother, she must face her own truth: that her engagement isn't the only thing in her life that is broken.

My Review:

This was such an unexpected read for me. So much more than I anticipated and the dual timeline, though not as enmeshed as some, was an added bonus. I say that because I feel like the major portion of this novel is spent in present day, though there are parallels with the early settlement of the Amish community in 1840.

So we have Savannah Mast in present day, the daughter of an ex-Amish father. She has maintained a relationship with her Amish grandmother in Indiana who has always been her anchor. When personal catastrophe hits, Savannah seeks out her Mammi's special brand of comfort and support. She expects to find her bearings living among the bucolic Amish community. Instead she finds mystery -- a missing Amish teen, a questionable county sheriff and a childhood friend caught in the middle.

Honestly, the layers of angst are delightfully twitchy. :-) I made so many presumptions that I had to alter right to very end. I love the way Savannah really comes into her own in her personal journey. And the way it reflects Emma Fischer's life in 1840. Not in every way -- there are heartbreaking parts of Emma's story that Savannah has never experienced, but there's still enough similarities to make me pause and reflect. And what ties them together is an Amish historian and storyteller who has a knack for finding the perfect story for every circumstance.

Sprinkle in some romance and the celebration of sisterhood and solid cast of secondary characters and, well, you might just get bibliophile-tipsy at the sublimeness of it all. :-)

  4. Dual timelines are becoming ever more popular, in general, or so it seems. This sounds interesting, and I always like a cover with a pretty quilt. Looks like something scrappy my grandmother made. Thanks!
