TRACE OF DOUBT
Bestselling and award-winning author DiAnn Mills delivers a heart-stopping story of dark secrets, desperate enemies, and dangerous lies.
Fifteen years ago, Shelby Pearce confessed to murdering her brother-in-law and was sent to prison. Now she's out on parole and looking for a fresh start in the small town of Valleybsburg, Texas. But starting over won't be easy for an ex-con.
FBI Special Agent Denton McClure was a rookie fresh out of Quantico when he was first assigned the Pearce case. He's always believed Shelby embezzled five hundred thousand dollars from her brother-in-law's account. So he's going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.
But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It's up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby -- and the truth -- forever.
My Review:
Speechless. My flabber has been gasted. I don't think my pulse is back to normal and my blood pressure may be permanently set to high. What an emotional, edge-of-your-seat, whiplash inducing read!!!!
I connected with Shelby right from the first page. Life in prison has toughened her but it also led her to Jesus and she's planning on making a fresh start with the help of some generous strangers. Christians she has never met, but who believe in her ability to build a different kind of life in their small town community. Mind you, there are naysayers as well -- narrow-minded folks who'd like Shelby to settle somewhere else.
So there's this edge to her arrival right from the very start, but it's even more complicated than that. A man posing as a friend is really spying on her and someone is getting more and more aggressive in their attempts to run her out of town. When things escalate, Shelby's forced to face her past and the danger it presents to her future. And just when I thought I was piecing it all together, Mills makes some drastic plot U-turns that kept my head spinning and my heart pounding right to the very end.
So many scrumptious layers in characterization -- with both Shelby and Denton. Just when I thought I knew it all, the author would hit me with another gasp out loud zinger. I haven't felt this discombobulated over a suspense since I read Terri Blackstock's If I Run series! (Except without the cliffhanger ending! Phew!)
The romance is slow-burn believable. From wary adversaries to reluctant collaborators and then things really get interesting. :-)
So thankful that a reading buddy told me I needed to push Trace of Doubt waaaayyyy to the top of my teetering TBR pile! She was so right! Definitely a not to be missed suspense.
I listened to the audible edition expertly narrated by Tara Langella. She kept me riveted right to the very last second!
