Reader's Choice -- New Year's Reading Goals

GIVEAWAY

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
THIS IS MY LONG SUFFERING
SIMBA. HE'S CROSSED OVER
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
BUT THIS PHOTO
STILL MAKES ME SMILE!

And now for something new and exciting that might just fill me with a wee bit of dread too 'cause I've never done this type of goal setting before. Mostly I just see book, devour book, look for my next bookish meal. And repeat.  :-)

A few years ago, I started setting yearly # of books-to-be-read goals thanks to prompts by GoodReads but, recently I've gotten into watching a few book tube channels and that has inspired me to dig a little deeper and try to guide the path my reading journey takes me on.

You'll see that most of my goals are open ended. They are ideas and hopes more than concrete 'X number of books in this category, tick the box and call it done' goals. That's because, while I do follow some planning -- I mean, I diligently recored all the Reader's Choice recommendations in an organized month by month fashion -- I'm also very much a mood reader. I'll get a strong yearning for Regency or Suspense or a specific trope and I just have to go into a deep dive reading binge so I want to leave lots of freedom for me to still be able to do that.

So, I'm going to share my reading goals in a sec, but first, let me explain how the giveaway portion of this blog is going to work:

Nothing like a tippy-toppy
TBR pile to keep an
Avid Reader in
Bibliophile Bliss!

BEST READS FIRST EVER
NEW YEAR'S READING GOALS
GIVEAWAY!

It's super easy -- you just need to share at least one reading goal you have made for 2022. Can be as simple as the # of books you'd like to read or an author you'd like to try or a genre you want to focus on. Anything goes, they're your goals, after all. Then, in the same comment, list a book that will help you reach your goal. So it looks like this:

"I want to catch up on some suspense series. Night Prey by Susan Sleeman."

You can enter up to three times in three separate comments -- and you can use the same goal or different ones each time.

Books can be published any time up until March 2022. Currently published books will be ordered the first week in January for the winners, otherwise it will be an IOU for a Jan, Feb or Mar 2022 title.

See? Easy Peasy. But if you're still not clear, don't be shy about asking questions.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: TODAY'S GIVEAWAY IS OPEN TO EMAIL ENTRIES. JUST TYPE 'READING GOALS' IN THE SUBJECT LINE AND THEN LIST YOUR ENTRY SELECTIONS IN THE BODY OF THE EMAIL.*

KAV'S 2022
READING GOALS

READ MORE INDIE AUTHORS

It used to be that almost all indie books were only available in ebooks so I stopped paying attention to them. These days indie books are often available in paperback and even audible editions so I'm on the hunt!

Authors on my radar:

Milla Holt
Valerie Comer
Narelle Atkins
Janet Ferguson
Liwen Ho
Elizabeth Maddrey
Jaycee Weaver

Do you have any favourite indie authors you think I should try?

CATCH UP ON SERIES I'M BEHIND IN

I'm hyperventilating just thinking about all the unfinished series I could put on this list. Both Susan Sleeman and Christy Barritt could keep me busy playing catch up all year long! Oh, and Sara M. Eden's Lancaster Family series is etched in stone. I've only read the first book and I'm definitely going to read all of them in 2022!

READ MORE DEBUT AUTHORS

This is a tricky one because I think it's hard to source out debut novels. I usually just stumble over them in a random bumbling fashion. But I'd like to be more purposeful and seek out debuts this year. Wish me happy hunting!

READ MORE NEW-TO-ME AUTHORS

I read a lot of new-to-me-authors this year. I get a tad shy of giddy when I discover a new fave...but that discovery also comes with some angst because -- more books to keep up with!!!! Such a divine readerly dilemma!

DIVERSIFY MY READING

I'd like to approach this three ways: Culture/ethnicity in characters, Culture/ethnicity in authors and diverse settings. While I love all the books I read in the US, I'd also love to armchair travel around the world. Oh -- and characters with disabilities or chronic conditions are rare, but I'm determined to source some out too. Sarah Monzon's Amanda is a fantastic example of how powerful (and fun) as story like that can be!

STAY CURRENT WITH SERIES

Sometimes this is relatively easy to do if a book is published traditionally because there are usually only two or three released in a year BUT when it comes to Indies! Yikes. But I'm going to try.

START NEW-TO-ME SERIES

As I discover new-to-me authors, I find myself scrambling to catch up and then keep up. I aim to follow through with at least some of the new-to-me-series I start in 2022.

PLAY AUTHOR CATCH-UP

There are a few authors I think I'm close to being caught up with and I want to work on their books this coming year (as long as books aren't only in ebook format)

Sarah Monzon
Toni Shiloh
Ruth Logan Herne

READ OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE (OCCASIONALLY!)

This gives me heart palpitations even though I do have a pretty wide reading palette. There are still some genres that I'm not drawn to. Science Fiction (Brand of Light by Ronie Kendig -- I've checked it out from the library twice and didn't read it!) Biblical Fiction, Action Thrillers, anything without a romance in it (snicker!)

GIVE UNLOVED TROPES A SECOND CHANCE

Sigh. Am I really going to write this down? Yes I am!

Love Triangles (bah, phooey!)
Secret Baby
Billionaires

Tada! That's it (so far!) I'm pretty excited to see what reading goals I accomplish in 2022. I have a fancy dancy notebook to record all my successes in too! So, now it's your turn:

WHAT KIND OF NEW YEARS READING GOALS ARE YOU SETTING? Share below or in an email (remember to include book titles that will help you achieve your goal) and you have a chance to win one of those titles.

  2. This just may be the most fun day yet! I love your category choices, but 10, wow, is a lot! Some of our choices do match but I'm going easy on myself and starting with 4 goals :)
    My 2022 Goals:
    1) read 150 books for the 4th year in a row
    2) Try a new-to-me or debut author every month
    3) Read one book on my backlist every month
    4) Play author catch-up

Here's an intrepid reporter free tip: I'm going to recommend Valerie M. Bodden as a new-to-me author find if you'd like a recommendation. I read her Not Until Christmas Morning (bk #5 in Hope Springs series) in Nov. and her writing blew me away! I'm going to read everything she writes from here on in! (Her books do come in paperback)

I have 2 specific authors on my author catch-up and backlist:
    Tamera Alexander's 2 Carnton novels
Laura Frantz's Ballantyne series of 3

So, back to today's giveaway. My first pick would go towards my book count for the year.
The Lady's Mine by Francine Rivers 2/8

    1. Wow, congratulations on consistent book count over 4 years! that's awesome! And I love your goals, but you'll notice that though I have 10 of them I haven't set any limitations so technically all I have to do is read one book that fits each category and I can say I've met my goals. :-) I'm such a slacker!

Though, since many books will over lap I'll be able to apply multiple goals to each of them. Like your Valerie M. Bodden suggestion (it's in my amazon cart now because I need to order a bible study book and why pay shipping when I can get it free if I just buy more books? lol) It meets 4 of my goals: indie author, new-to-me author, diversity book (hero is an amputee) and it's part of a new-to-me series.

Happy to help you along with your word count, Tracey. Good luck!

    2. I thought about all the goals Valerie's books would check off after I posted. I really think you'll love her, her stories are so authentic and unique, her characters so real! Ater that 1st book I signed up for her newsletter and got her free novella, then read books one and two, will finish book three today. Four more in the series to go, then she's already got a new book series started, I'm happy about that!

    3. Yes, ditto what Kav said! What an awesome number of books to read in 1 year! I can't even imagine! Congrats, Tracey!

    1. Ah, thanks, Tracey. I've had a blast these past two weeks too. And thanks for the heads up on a debut author, I'm writing it down for my goal as well. I knew one of the books suggestions this RC week had a debut author but I forgot which one in all the flurry! And let me just say that it comes as no surprise that Where the Last Rose Blooms showed up today...I'm intuitive like that. lol Good luck, Tracey!

    2. LOL at myself and my shameless book pick. I made it fit in 4 of the 7 days of RC week. What can I say in my defense except I've already read my other Jan picks for review, so moving right along... love your intuition, haha

  5. 1. Love the Amish genre! Wanda E. Brunstetter was the author that introduced me to this genre. I LOVE to bake! So why haven’t I read the “The Amish Cooking Class Trilogy”? In 2022, I want to rectify that.

  6. 2. Love the idea of getting in on a series on the ground floor with book number one. Also love suspense stories and Susan Sleeman’s style of writing. That being the case, on my list for 2022 is to read “Tough as Steele” and all the books that come after it in the Steele Guardians series.

  7. 3. In 2022, I want to explore new authors. I love stories set in the time before I was born to see a bit of how life was during my parent’s and grandparent’s time. “Until Leaves Fall in Paris” by Sarah Sundin not only fills that slot and sounds fabulous, but it also introduces me to a new to me author as well – another of my 2022 goals.

    1. Love your goals, Kay. And don't we have a special bond with authors who introduce us to a genre. Did you know that The Amish Cooking Club also has an actual cookbook out?!

I'm right there with you on Susan Sleeman's next series. The first book comes out in February and we have to get on it fast because the next books are sure to follow in quick succession. Sarah Sundin is an amazing author -- you will love her and there are so many great reads in store for you since she has a nice backlist. Good luck, Kay!

    1. A reading goal can be as simple as 'Read'. This is the first 'official' goals setting I've done. Even in my non-reading life I only pick a 'one word' to carry me through the year. (Mine's Pursuit for 2022.) But I'm looking forward to this and you've given me a new-to-me author to add to my list as well. Yay! Good luck, Diana!

    2. I love that concept of one word goals. My non-reading word is joy. I had Covid last Jan & with it followed a host of health issues. I feel like that robbed me of alot of joy this past year. Joy can be found in the form of gratitude every day for even the simple things we may take for granted. The joy of the Lord is our strength!

    3. Amen! Joy is the perfect word to hold onto after the year you've had. Hugs, Diana!

(Most are clean romance, a few are also CF).

  36. I'm the first to admit here that I don't set any reading goals for myself. With one exception, to read (at least) 100 books per year. To which I have exceeded every year so far. Those fun Christmas novellas help pad my book count in December :-)

I'm such a mood reader...so I never know what book or series I'll pick up at any given time. It just depends on what I feel I'm up to reading; it could be historical, or Amish, or any number of genres or authors. Sigh...so this is a really hard category for me to narrow down.

So my goal is the one I have for myself each year: 100 books read in 2022. The very first book I'll be reading for 2022 is actually my last review book for an author who I love: Marrying Mr. Wrong by Melissa Jagears.

That being said, I think I'd like to sprinkle a few cozy-type mysteries into the mix and I'd choose to go with:

    1. Pint of No Return by Dana Mentink

I know you love Amanda Flowers, so I would love to check her out as well. But I have no idea where to start, lol!

    1. I totally get that, Trixi, 'cause I've never set any goals for myself before this year but for some reason it really tickles my fancy now and I'm excited to get started. I have a lovely red book to log everything in too! And happy coloured pens. Throw a little stationary supplies my way and I'm one happy reader. :-)

I missed out on Melissa's latest series -- just read a novella linked to it so maybe I should put that on my catch-up series list too. Ack -- glad I got a thick book to record everything in!

I predict you will love Pint of No Return! Good luck, Trixi.

As to Amanda Flowers -- where to start indeed, especially when I tell you that she published an Amish cozy mystery series under the name Isabella Alan. Bwahahaha. I started with her not quite cozy books -- traditional sized Christian Fiction from B&H Publishing, An Appleseed Creek Mystery series. The heroine takes a job at a college in Amish country and, of course, gets mixed up in murder. For traditional cozies...honestly, you can't go wrong, just start at the beginning of a series. She has several Amish ones. I really liked the Amish Quilt Shop Mysteries written under the pseudonym Isabella Alan, but her other two Amish series are wonderful as well. Only one is written from the POV of an Amish character and that's the Amish Matchmaker series. The others have English heroines living in an Amish community. Oh and her Magical Bookshop series!!! If you like a wee bit o' magic with your mystery is divine. Not to mention the Scottish garden one! Aaaaggghhh, I'm not helping you decide, am I? The good thing is your library is sure to have her books in stock because cozies are so popular. Phew...sorry for rambling.

  37. As for Indie authors & Billionaires Kav, how about combining the two with Elizabeth Maddrey? She has a series called "So You Want to be a Billionaire?" that consists of six books. I don't know if they are out on audio or not, so you'll have to look it up. No, I've not read them but she has promised that the heroes aren't money hungry nor do they flaunt their riches around, but they are men who do good. Yes, they contain romance :-) I've only read 2 or 3 books by her and I enjoy her writing.

Liwen Ho is a hoot! She has a "Fab Fourties" rom-com series that I just adore....in fact I can't wait for the third book to come out. The first two are entitled "Retying the Knot" and "Head Over Stilettos". There's also many more books she's written so please do read them. I think you'll enjoy them!

Here's some more indie authors I know about (from Inspy Romance blog):
    Hannah Jo Abbott
    Amy R. Anguish
    Valerie M Bodden
    Mandi Blake
    Tabitha Bouldin
    Tara Grace Ericson
    Heather Gray
    Milla Holt
    Laurie Larsen
    Janine Rosche
Angela Ruth Strong (I think she has cozy-type stories too)
Jan Thompson (she writes diverse characters)
    Teresa Tysinger
    Shannon Taylor Vannatter
Merrilee Whren (her earlier books were Love Inspired)

As for series , I will NEVER catch up or stay current so there's no hope there, LOL! Another "goal" maybe? Try some new-to-me "funny" authors, those who infuse humor in their writing. I'd start with Jen Turano. I know, I know, why haven't I before now? So I'd start here:

    2. To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wait...did I read that right? No Jen Turano yet? Well, if you're looking for humour, look no further!

And thanks for that great list -- I notice some of them have also published traditionally as well, which gives me a dilemma to figure out. Do I include hybrid authors (traditions/indie) in my indie author line up or do I stick with authors who only self publish?! Or maybe I make a sub-category for hybrid authors and count their indie books as part of the goal? Hmmm....maybe this is one I've resisted making specific reading goals before now. lol

I've been listening to StoryChats which is produced by the in inspy blog, I think. It's hosted by Elizabeth Maddray, Valerie Comer and Narelle Atkins so Elizabeth's billionaire series might be a good one to try...eeekkk! Good luck, Trixi!

  38. And thinking more about it, maybe another "goal" is dipping my toes back into the suspense genre? I get nervous heart palpitations at just the thought. Something I have mostly avoided this past year and a half due to living it during this never-ending pandemic!
    Here's my choice:

    3. Night Fall by Susan Sleeman (book #1 in the Nighthawk Security series)

So maybe this might also count for "catch up on series I'm behind on" and "play author catch-up", lol!

    1. Well, if you're going to go dipping toes you can't ask for better heroes to have your back than the Byrd brothers. I really love that series! You're going to love the brothers and their parents -- especially their mama is a hoot! And the banter and the tough guy personas. Happy sigh. Definitely a series I'll happily relisten to. Hmm, maybe I should have had a revisit goal. For some reason I've been enjoying second readings (or listenings) of some of my collection. Maybe that's a comfort read thing for me -- my pandemic coping strategy. lol Good luck, Trixi!

    1. TBR books are so much more satisfying than lists! I divide mine by year and then months and then the really fun part is colour coding the books I've read. I shade them in different colours for books I've bought, review books and gifted books. This year I might add a new colour for audible books. Eeeepppp...just call me a nerdy bibliophile! Oh and it is soooo satisfying to leaf through the pages and see all the pretty colour shaded entries, knowing they mean books read and loved. Happy sigh. I'll stop now.

So I'd like to recommend a title in the science fiction genre for you. I don't know if you've read it yet, but I'm sure you've seen it around as it was nominated for the Christy award. It's Extinction Island by Janice Boekhoff. I found it easy to read and for a long time it was a great suspense to me and I wondered about the science fiction thread, except for the dinosaurs of course. But slowly it was introduced and I really liked it! I'm not going to tell what it is. You have to find out yourself if you're going to read it. ;-)
