My Review:

This book has been languishing on my TBR pile, taunting me for a month now. I was desperate to read it but I pushed all the Christmas Love Inspired books ahead of it so that the giveaways would reach  winners before Christmas. Every time I drew close to that TBR pile I swear magnificent Quinn uttered a disapproving growl. He's the kind of dog ready to leap into action when a job needs doing. Waiting didn't sit well with him so he barked his discontent. I kept apologizing when I reached past him and selected a Christmas book instead. I felt soooooo guilty. Poor lad...but I think he's forgiven me now that I've shared his adventures. At least the growling has stopped. -)

Woohoo -- the grand finale of an epic continuity series! Valiant Defender is the eighth Military K-9 Unit novel and I was about ready to crawl out of my skin in anxious anticipation of the Red Rose Killer's capture. Kudos to all the authors for keeping the over-arcing suspense plot fresh and compelling over the course of the series. Loved the way clues were laid out and snippets of fresh information gleaned and, of course, missing dogs recovered in each book. And I appreciated that each story had it's own suspense plot too...and all that romance -- blissful sigh. That's a lot of happily-ever-afters!. Oh -- and K-9 heroes and heroines!!!! A howling success! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

So, while each book in the series could be read as a standalone, I think this one is better appreciated if you've read the others. It would totally make sense but I really think it makes more of an impact if you've been following along right from the start.

McCoy has done a fantastic job of tying all those lose ends together. And I was thrilled to discover that I actually figured out another piece of the puzzle before  Justin and Gretchen did. That didn't happen very often in this series so I'm pretty chuffed.

I fell hard for Justin. He's been intriguing me for months now so my expectations were really high -- both for his backstory and his love story and this author didn't disappoint. She delivered so much more than an outstanding suspense. As much as I'd anticipated bringing closure to this monster case, it was the romance that carried me away. Such depth and emotion amidst all the danger and intrigue. Stellar from start to finish!

    1. There was nothing imaginary about that growl -- shudder -- Quinn can be intimidating when he wants to be. Bwahahaha! Good luck, Kim.

  4. I visited my local second hand store recently and picked up TWO of the Military K-9 unit books, this one included. I could hardly contain my excitement when I spotted them and had to remember I was in a public place....so no squealing out loud for me...lol!

I have to play catch-up on this series, but I was waiting until the last one came out to do so. I hate being left in limbo on an over-arching theme such as the Red Rose killer.

I believe there is a two-in-one book entitled Military K-9 Unit Christmas by Valerie Hanson & Laura Scott that came out at the beginning of November. I don't know if it's the last or just an additional book to tie the series up or not. If you haven't read it, add it to your list :-)

    1. Is it a secondhand bookstore you go to or a thrift shop? We used to have a few really good secondhand bookstores...but never any Christian Fiction but they seem to be a thing of the past now. I guess ebooks did them in. :-(

Those K-9 Christmas novellas are just add-ons -- not part of the actual series. Everything gets wrapped up in this one. I noticed the Christmas book too late...I'm pretty much Christmased out when it comes to reading. Ho ho ho!

    2. I don't know if you would call it a thrift store or a second hand store, but it's my local Goodwill. They sell all kinds of things second-hand (clothes, books, household items, etc) and you can also donate your things you no longer want to them. Mine has a whole big section of used books where I can find Love Inspired or even the full length novels. They have a section just for "religious" where I can find the full length ones and the "romance" section where I look through for the LI ones. It is a hit or miss most times but I love perusing through them. It's always a thrill when I find LI titles I don't have and want, even older ones :-)

I hear you about being Christmas-outted by the time Christmas comes around with books. There's so many out there and the LI start at the end of September to beginning of October with them. By the time December comes around, I'm ready for the New Year...lol!
