HURRICANE SEASON
Betsy and Ty Franklin, owners of Franklin Dairy Farm in southern Alabama, have long since buried their dream for children of their own. While Ty manages their herd of dairy cows, Betsy busies herself with the farm's day-to-day operations and tries to forget her dream of motherhood. But when her free-spirited sister, Jenna, drops off her two young daughters for "just two week," Betsy's carefully constructed wall of self-protection begins to crumble.
As the two weeks stretch deeper into the Alabama summer, Betsy and Ty learn to navigate the new additions in their world -- and revel in the laughter that now fills their home. Meanwhile, record temperatures promise to usher in the most active hurricane season in decades.
Attending an art retreat four hundred miles away, Jenna is fighting her own battles. She finally has time and energy to focus on her photography, a lifelong ambition. But she wonders how her rediscovered passion can fit in with the life she's made back home as a single mom.
When Hurricane Ingrid aims a steady eye at the Alabama coast, Jenna must make a decidion that will change her family's future, eve as Betsy and Ty try to protect their beloved farm and their hearts. Hurricane Season is the story of one family's unconventional journey to healing -- and the relationships that must be mended along the way.
My Review:
An emotionally-charged, character-driven glimpse into the complicated dynamics of sisterly love. Denton's voice is rich and sweet and carefully measured. Her words flow so beautifully that it's easy to become immersed in the story with all your senses. I think I might have even come away from this read sporting a southern drawl! If this is what Southern Fiction is like, I want more of it!
This is family at it's best...and worst...as past collides with present and futures hang in the balance. Sisters at odds but also fiercely protective of one another. Free-spirited Jenna is the wild child. Betsy is the reliable older sister. Their roles have been defined since childhood, shaped by dysfunction.
Now Jenna is an unplanned single mom while married Betsy's happily-ever-after has been redefined under the looming shadow of infertility. It's a formula for the perfect storm. Emotions are raw, dreams conflicted as these two sisters struggle to find their place in their new realities.
Tender and touching and funny -- Jenna's girls are a riot! -- and ultimately triumphant.
Please note: I have not categorized Hurricane Season as a Christian Fiction selection even though the publisher is Thomas Nelson. Really disappointing, but sadly predictable since more and more of this publisher's fiction has strayed from being faith-based. It is a beautifully written, moving story and a clean read. Just no inspirational thread.

Laurens books always sound really good I have almost all of them on my WishList if not all Thank You for sharing this book with us. 😍

DeleteYou're welcome, Linda. Good luck.
DeleteThank you Kav 😃
DeleteMy ears perk up at "emotionally charged, character driven, complicated relationships". I've read a few novels like this not labeled as Christian fiction that were just as enjoyable. Though I do prefer the inspirational faith-theme like you do Kav! I'd take a chance at this new-to-me author.

This is just her second book. Her debut, The Hideaway rocked the Amazon charts. I found that one had more of an inspirational thread, subtle, but very powerful. Her writing style is exquisite and if you like emotionally charged etc, you're in the right place! Good luck Trixi.
DeleteI will have to look up The Hideaway since Lauren is a new author to me. Thanks for the heads up!

DeleteOk, so my Overdrive ebook library has a copy of The Hideaway, I just put myself on the holds list...it may be a while 'cause it looks pretty popular! From the description, it sounds like something I will love reading, can't wait :-)
DeleteKav, you are always adding to my ever-increasing want-to-read list!! Thank you!!
Yay -- so glad that your library has it. I don't know what I'd do without my library. I got this one from there and the one I'm reading now and...
DeleteI have not read her debut book, either. There are so many aspects to this book that pique my interest with the photography, family potentially impacted by hurricane (have two sisters-in-law living nearby on Gulf Coast), and just the general interest of a good read. We tend to find ourselves or our family situations in books, sometimes....Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo many interesting elements to this story and the family dynamics are riveting. There's nothing like a good sister story, right? Good luck, CC.
DeleteReminds me a little of a watt key book, Sounds good. cheetahthecat1986@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou're talking in code, Kim. :-) Good luck!
DeleteHe's a YA author
DeleteAh...just checked my library and I put his latest on hold. Looks really good. I love YA
DeleteWhat a book! Sounds like a winner! mauback55 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteIt is! Good luck, Melanie.
DeleteI probably have an unpopular opinion on Thomas Nelson's choice to publish fiction without what we call a "faith thread." I will read clean secular fiction/YA, but my expectations are prepared for a clean, non-faith-based read. Since a strong faith thread is what excites me about Christian fiction, I crave and mostly expect to get that from a Christian publisher's book. Of course, there are sometimes lighter faith-threads in some books than others, but a faith-thread nonetheless. Unless I'm prepared, I'm disappointed when I don't get it. It's a high like no other when I am moved emotionally by an author's words that I feel come from the Lord's prompting. I won't be able to say I wasn't prepared for the content of this book now that I've read your thorough review. Unfortunately, others with my opinion might be disappointed after reading her first book with at least the lighter thread it contained.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I'm happy I read your review first, since I purchased Hurricane Season when the ebook was on sale for 1.99. Having the first book, I was excited for her sophomore effort. I'll be going in with the expectations of an entertaining read with the exclusion of an apparent faith-thread. No judgement of the author, just adjusted expectations. :)
Yes!!!! I feel exactly the same way. It's one thing going into a read knowing it's not going to have a faith thread but, when you buy a book published by a Christian publisher and it doesn't contain a faith element...disappointment for sure! And it scares me because it's happening more frequently. It started with Thomas Nelson but other publishers seem to be following their lead. I can't understand why they don't create an imprint for their 'clean but no inspirational thread' books so readers are aware. I usually only get my Thomas Nelson books from the library because I'd rather spend my money on an actual Christian fiction book.
DeleteI really liked this book, but was also disappointed in the lack of the faith element. Book twins again.😘
ReplyDeleteBook twins in heart as well as reading material. Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way.
DeleteI had no idea that TN had strayed so far from faith in their fiction. That is a true shame. I will definitely keep that in mind with my purchases as well. I love clean fiction and a good message, but when I read books from certain publishers, I am ready for my faith to be increased and I also like that I can lend a good book to a friend that might also open up their hearts to Jesus.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the review Kav. Not entering this time but sure enjoyed your review.
Thanks for sharing, Kelly. It seems we're all like-minded when it comes to wanting some faith in our fiction.
DeleteThis one is on my to-read list, Kav. Include me, please! :) p.s. thanks for the heads up about no faith thread.

You're welcome, Cheryl. Good luck.
DeleteLauren K. Denton is a new to me author, but one I'd love to explore. "HURRICANE SEASON" sounds like a great place to start. I can relate to this story on a few levels so I'm sure I would get emotional but that's good in reading a book in my opinion. Maybe we can read it and put our own faith thread to it from what we take from the story. I do that often. Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

That's a great idea, Kay. There's definitely a few places where I could see the need for prayer and holding onto your faith no matter what. And knowing that you don't have to face life's struggle along. Sigh...if only these characters knew that too. It makes my heart hurt just thinking about it. Good luck, Kay.
DeleteI haven’t had the opportunity to read Lauren Denton yet but have heard wonderful things about her writing. Thanks for the chance.

DeleteI have read this book. The title intrigued me since I live in the Hurricane capital of the world. This person that wins this book will not be able to put it down until they finish it.

I don't envy you living in the Hurricane capital of the world, Janet! But I do envy you your church library. Good luck!
DeleteThis sounds intriguing for sure! I am also disappointed there is no faith theme, but having your review that it is still a clean book keeps my interest piqued. Definitely worth at least checking out this new author (to me) and seeing how I like it as well. Thanks for the honest review and heads up Kav!

She has an amazing way with words and it's always better to go into a read knowing what's in store re a faith thread or not. Good luck, Laura.
DeleteI have not read any of Lauren's books and would love to read this.
