An Hour Unspent

GIVEAWAY
WHITE, ROSEANNA M.
AN HOUR UNSPENT

With danger creeping ever closer, do their dreams still matter?

Once London's top thief, Barclay Pearce has turned his back on his life of crime and now uses his skills for a nation at war, including keeping an eye on a talented engineer working as a clockmaker. But not until he rescues the man's daughter from a mugging does he begin to wonder what his future might hold.

Evelina Manning has constantly dreamed and worked for independence. But she certainly never meant for it to inspire her fiance to end their engagement and enlist in the army. When the intriguing man who saved her returns to the Manning residence to study clock repair with her father, she can't help being interested. Bus she shoon learns that nothing with Barclay Pearce is as simple as it seems.

As 1915 Enngland plunges deeper into war, the race is on for any technological edge, and Evelina's father's ideas have captured the attention of many -- perhaps too many. As danger seems to encroach from every side, it may just take a reformed thief to steal the time they need to escape.

My Review:

I LOVE this series and I'm praying that An Hour Unspent isn't the last of it even though it's the dreaded third book in the Shadows Over England series and three seems to the be the magic number in the publishing world. But Barclay has so many siblings and I need a story for each one of them...or at least the ones old enough to make their own way in the world. Is that greedy? Yes? Then call me a Roseanna M. White glutton! I love this patchwork family soooooo much that I can't let them go! Especially since the author has tantalized (or should I say teased) me with alluring glimpses into the backstories of some of Barclay's sisters.

And speaking of this being the third book in a series -- while it can be read as a standalone, I think you're much better off reading the first two books before starting in on this one. There's tons of backstory about these characters and how they got to the where they are now which makes for really good reading that you'll want to savor...just in case this really is the last book in the series. (sob!)

So I've been enamored with Barclay for a while now and really excited to get his story. Wasn't sure what to expect other than spectacular and White definitely delivers that. Unassuming heartthrob comes to mind when I think about how to describe this hero. Not because he isn't memorable, but because his life's work has made him hone the fine art of being invisible. But when he grins....pulses rise and smelling salts might be required -- Lina and I are in agreement on that! And with his family...be still my heart and prepare yourself for many swoon inducing scenes.

And then there's his faith. A new Christian, intent on making changes, becoming a better man. I love his honesty both about his past and what he's feeling in the present. And the way he is open to divine direction. This is a man who faces challenges and danger, hurt and deception and yet he's found that if he gives it over to the Lord -- "The weight on him wasn't any lighter. And yet, somehow, it wasn't quite so heavy. The burden still weighed, but it was as if another shoulder had come alongside his under it. That, he'd come to realize, was how the Lord worked. At least for him. He didn't remove the bad -- He just lent him the strength to face it." (p 205)

Need I say more? One of my favourite heroes of 2018!

  13. It seems like most to all of White's books are series of 3 or standalones. Like you, I could always read more. This is the only book I don't already own of hers. tlhcoupon(at)Hotmail(dot)com

    2. Maybe she'll do do a spin-off series with the secondary characters. I find authors will do that quite often. A new series, but with familiar characters. You can only hope. ;-)

    3. It sounds like that's what she's going to do with the Codebreaker series...at least with one of the characters....on tenterhooks waiting find out.

  14. Yes please! Roseanna has such great series, and I haven't been able to read this one since it came out. This one seems expecially captivating too. You are right, it does seem to be the dreaded third book, and I too hope she continues on. Soemtimes I don't want the characters' stories to end until everyone is happily settled, from main to minor characters.
