A Foster Mother's Promise

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
A FOSTER MOTHER'S PROMISE

To make them a family...she'll need his help.

Raising three children alone is tough, but single mom Carly Bradley makes it work -- until she takes in one more. As she struggles to handle the new arrival, grumpy new neighbour Mike Morris seems to bond with little Hannah. But a past tragedy keeps Mike at arm's length from Carly. Will they both learn to trust again before discovering happiness next door?

A Kendrick Creek novel.

My Review:

The kind of second chance romance that will tie your tummy in knots and keep your emotions on edge up to the very last page. All written in Ruth Logan Herne's distinctive style -- full of so much heart and humour and the simple truths we should all live by.

Our hero and heroine are in their forties -- both with the kind of personal histories that can put up barriers. For Carly, that's the conviction that she's destined to mother her patchwork family alone. For Mike, that's not getting involved in the ragtag family next door. Simple, right? They both want absolutely nothing to do with the other...except Mike keeps getting dragged into Carly's drama and those kids he needs to keep at arm's length are working their way into his heart.

This is a slice of real life in all it's random brokenness and unexpected joys. But there's sorrow too...and some surprising plot twists that had me gasping out loud.

Another consume-in-one-gulp read from an iconic author who knows how to deliver the kind of stories that linger long after the book is finished.

  1. I have this one waiting by my reading chair to get to next. I love Ruth Logan Herne's Love Inspired books so I'm sure I'll love this one too.
On a bit of a bittersweet note, in case you haven't heard, this will be Ruthy's very last book for Love Inspired. :/
    Happy reading Friday Kav!

    2. I know you aren't on FB anymore, but Ruthy made it known this would be her last LI with Harelquin. I wanted to get what she said right so I had to scroll through 3 months of Ruthy's post to get her post to you.
Coming in April! This poignant story is a beautiful end to a wonderful relationship with Love Inspired books… a story of grace and healing and second chances… set in the great Smoky Mountains. As publishing changed its guidelines, wanting only authors of color to write across racial lines, I knew it was time to take the reins.
      I love writing diverse characters.
I have done that from the beginning.
My story telling hasn’t changed. Publishers got understandably scared of retribution, particularly on Twitter and at conferences.
They are right to be concerned.
I am right to branch out and write what I love and what I’m good at: people. All kinds, all colors, all ages, all creeds. God doesn’t put us on Earth to keep to ourselves. He put us here to be His people. I happily count myself among them… no matter what skin tone genetics endowed.
      Color doesn’t matter.
      Heart does.
“Love one another as I have loved you…”
I hope folks love, love, love this story because I sure do!

    3. This is what I commented to her and her response,
"As publishing changed its guidelines, wanting only authors of color to write across racial lines, I knew it was time to take the reins." What an incredible disservice publishers are doing to all writers! That's the equivalent of saying only Caucasian writers can write books with Caucasian characters, wouldn't that be ridiculous?! and the reverse is also true. You keep being YOU and do what you do so well, writing books that feature all types of characters. You write 'em and I'll read 'em! Always! I'm proud of the stand you have taken! Way to set a great example! ❤

    4. Tracey, and that's pretty much what's been happening behind the scenes and it's not just Harper Collins/Harlequin, but others, too. I think there comes a time when you have to reexamine your values and goals and realize when it's time to bow out gracefully... and we parted on good terms, I have so much to be grateful for there. But in good conscience, I can't pretend that whitewashing the characters to keep a handful of folks from getting angry doesn't work for me. Can you imagine if I couldn't write Jazz in Wishing Bridge? Or Avis Washington, the midwife in Book One and now one of the leads in Book Four "Embracing Light in Wishing Bridge"? How sad that would be! And Sarah in "Waiting Out the Storm", a character in my first published book with Love Inspired and the heroine in book 2 was a mix of African American/Caucasian/Native American.... what a difference ten years makes.

    5. First off, thanks for doing all that scrolling -- you are the bested intrepid reporter ever!

I'm shocked, though. I am absolutely all for diversity in authors and in books and I can see where, especially in CF, the majority of traditionally published books with diverse characters have been written by white authors up until now. So I'm all for including more diverse authors. BUT -- to do that and then close the door on white authors writing diverse characters?! That makes no sense. We're going to end up with even fewer books with diverse characters this way. How is that going to help? Definitely, publishers should be mindful about recruiting authors with a variety of cultural backgrounds, but to limit diversity in characters to only non-white writers is just....I have no words.

And how does it work with the Amish? They are a completely different culture and yet there are oodles of writers featuring Amish characters and themes in their books. If they stopped non-Amish writers from writing Amish books there'd be virtually no Amish books!

Well, I'm thrilled that it sounds like Ruthy is going to keep writing. Maybe indie publishing? Cause the world would be a sad place indeed without Ruthy stories.

Sorry if there are a lot of typos in this comment, I tried to catch them but my sight is really blurry today so it's hard to see the words.
