COUNT THE NIGHT STARS
Count your nights by stars, not shadows. Count your life with smiles, not tears.
1961. After a longtime resident at Nashville's historic Maxwell House Hotel suffers a debilitating stroke, Audrey Whitfield is tasked with cleaning out the reclusive woman's room. There, she discovers an elaborate scrapbook filled with memorabilia from the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Love notes on the backs of unmanned postcards inside capture Audrey's imagination with hints of a forbidden romance...and troubling revelations about the disappearance of young women at the exposition. Audrey enlists the help of a handsome hotel guest as she tracks down clues and information about the mysterious "Peaches" and her regrets over one fateful day, nearly sixty-five years earlier.
1897. Outspoken and forward-thinking Priscilla Nichols isn't willing to settle for just any man. She's still holding out hope for love when she meets Luca Moretti on the eve of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Charmed by the Italian immigrant's boldness, Priscilla spends time exploring the wondrous sights of the expo with Luca -- until a darkness overshadows the monthlong event. Haunted by a terrible truth, Priscilla and Luca are sent down separate paths as the nigt's stars fade into dawn.
My Review:
I think this is a first for me -- a dual timeline novel with two historical periods and I am amazed at how the author brought both so vibrantly to life. So many subtle details that enhanced both stories for me.
Now, here's where I struggle with what to say in a review because I can't figure out how to write it without posting spoilers so this is going to be the most general of reviews ever!
Emotionally gripping -- especially the 1897 timeline. It just gutted me in places. I kept thinking, no, this couldn't be happening even though I saw the foreshadowing. And Audrey's complicated life in 1961 -- going from a somewhat naive and sheltered college student to awakening to the injustice in the world, both past and present The growth in both heroines is phenomenal and I felt every growing pain right along with them.
Love the way the scrapbook binds these two timelines together and the expert way Shocklee weaves in and out of each era, always leaving me wanting more even as I was eager to jump back into the other timeline. Made for a seamless read that held me enthralled.

Yes -- you would love this one with it's two historical timelines. :-) Good luck, Kathleen!
DeleteI've only discovered dual-timeline with Jaime Jo Wright's first book in 2017 and haven't read many others written by anyone else. Maybe she spoiled me (or enchanted me?) with her unique writers voice so it's made me a bit picky.
ReplyDeleteNow, that being said, I've heard very high praise for Michelle's books, especially this one. So between that and your compelling review it's one I'd love to read! When you have a hard time reviewing a story, I KNOW it's beyond good 😁

There are a lot of dual timelines being published now in Christian Fiction. Jamie Jo Wright definitely has a distinctive style, but there are other good one out there as well. Good luck, Trixi!

DeleteWhat an intriguing book this is! Kav, I struggled in the very same way as you. How to write a review w/o giving anything away? You did a wonderful job capturing the very essence of this mesmerizing story. Me, apparently not so much. But I tried. I guess for some reason Amazon didn't like it bc they still haven't posted it & it released on Mar 22. They said my review didn't meet their guidelines. I've been writing reviews for 12 yrs & I think I know how to meet the guidelines by now. Sheesh! Be sure to put this 1 at the top of your wishlist everyone!
ReplyDeleteAmazon is funny about their reviews sometimes. I bet it's because you mention a trade name in your review. What would happen if you took out Maxwell House and just said hotel? Try it and see if they let it through.
DeleteI resubmitted it yesterday & if they don't accept it, I'll try that, Kav. Thank you! I didn't even think of that. Will have to change my next sentence bc I mentioned brewing and a pun bc of Maxwell House. It'll be OK though cause I have it posted on about 10 different bookseller sites. It won't hurt to leave 1 sentence off of Amazon's.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteIt finally posted!! Yay! I removed Maxwell House & said publisher instead of Tyndale Publishing.
DeleteI received mine today. Book twinning.
ReplyDeleteYay -- let's do a book twin waltz!
