Mending the Widow's Heart

GIVEAWAY
ROSS, MIA
MENDING THE WIDOW'S HEART

The Widow's New Beginning

Spending the summer with her son in a quiet New England town will give military widow Holly Andrews much-needed breathing space. But that peace is quickly disturbed! From her first meeting with Sam Calhoun, a contractor working her aunt's house, there's a surprising kinship. The handsome veteran is capable, smart and charming -- and fighting a battle with pain and loss that Holly can easily understand. Working on a youth baseball league with the plucky Southern single mom rekindles dreams Sam had all but abandoned. He knows Holly hadn't planned to stay, but in Liberty Creek, temporary has a way of turning into forever...

Liberty Creek: Love takes root in a New England town

My Review:

Do you want to know the kind of dedicated reader I am? The kind that's willing to start a new series by a favourite author even though she knows her heart will be broken into a zillion pieces when the series is over and she has to say goodbye to small town perfection and beloved characters. That's the kind of dedication and sacrifice I put into this reader calling. And Mia Ross is an author who beguiles me into thinking the small towns she creates are actually on the map and possible vacation destinations whereupon I can set my sights on certain swoonworthy heroes. Sigh, of course it's all fantasy but it feels so real! And now, here we are, at the start of something special in this first Liberty Creek novel.

There's something about a quaint New England town that screams Rockwell paintings and Christmas movies and Ross doesn't disappoint in her depiction of Liberty Creek. It's just the place of solace Holly needs as she tries to figure out her future. It's where Sam has come home to wallow in his past as he's all but given up on looking ahead. These two meet and I can't say sparks fly right off the page but there's definitely a connection. A stirring that makes them both uncomfortable in a deliciously thrilling way (well, for the reader anyway.)

Sam is a wounded soul grappling to dig his way out of a dark place. I love how Holly relates to him -- accepting, patient, allowing him to set the pace in everything from simple conversations to more serious commitment stuff. This is a slow burn kind of romance that gently unfolds with the help of a small town that believe in happily ever afters.

  1. Small town romance is some of my favorite! Dedication to an author even though you know they'll break your heart when the series end? Yeah, that's good stuff right there :-)

    1. This city gal is attracted to small town stories in a crazy way. I wonder if it's as idyllic as it seems in fiction? I adore Mia's books but I think my favourite series is the first one -- Barrett's Mill. Hope you get to read something by this author soon. Good luck, Trixi.

    3. I live in a small town and love it for so many reasons. Except for Summer when we are packed with tourists...oy! I can get anywhere within 10 minutes to a half hour, I often run into people I know in a store or restaurant, (for the most part) folks are friendly and the pace is slower. When I visit my sister-in-law, who lives in a big city, I hate the traffic and noise! I love the easy access to big box stores & groceries, but I wouldn't trade it for anything! I love that I can walk along the ocean anytime I want along the wide walkway designed for that purpose (called the Prom). I think you'd like it too, you meet a lot of people walking their dogs. You would be in canine heaven...lol! I think any town big or small, has it's pro's and con's.

    4. Seaside dog walking? I'm in! I really am hankering for a small town vibe. I live in a downtown area that has become trendy. It's beautiful -- old houses, big yards, by the river, a beach, lots of green space. And the shops in the area had a real village feel. But condos went up along the river and the mom and pop shops that met all our needs have been replaced with coffee shops, restaurants and yoga gyms. Oh -- and two very expensive baby shops which sell high end strollers that cost more than a car (slight exaggeration.) And the traffic is horrific thanks to all the condos so now they want to get rid of the green space in favour of expanded roads and parking lots. We're in a big battle right now that will determine the future of the area. So I think it's time for me to explore small towns close by. Must have library and bookstore though. LOL

  10. I live near many small towns that each one of them are quaint and have pleasant surprises in each town. I live in the country, but I do business in many of the small towns I live near and there is something to be said for people knowing you by name, no traffic jams, and the pride these people have in their town. I have read Mia's books before and love how she brings the places she writes about alive and gives you the feeling you are there! I thank you Kav for the giveaway and the opportunity at a chance to win Mia's book. God Bless!
