Whispers of the Bayou

GIVEAWAY
CLARK, MINDY STARNS
WHISPERS OF THE BAYOU

Swept away from Louisiana Bayou country as a child, Miranda Miller is a woman without a past. She has a husband and child of her own and a fulfilling job in a Manhattan museum, but she also has questions -- about the tragedy that cut her off from family and caused her to be sent away, and about those first five years that were erased from her memory entirely.

Summoned to the bedside of Willy Pedreaux, the old caretaker of her grandparents' antebellum estate, Miranda goes back for the first time, hoping to learn the truths of her past and receive her rightful inheritance. But Willy's premature death plunges Miranda into a night mare of buried secrets, priceless treasure, and unknown enemies.

Follow one woman's search through the hidden rooms of a bayou mansion, the enigmatic snares of an ancient myth, and the all-consuming quest for a heart open enough for love -- and God.

My Review:

published in 2008
My thanks to my public library for providing such an excellent selection of retro reads.

There's an exciting Gothic vibe to this compelling mystery. Love the 'exotic' (to me) setting of the Louisiana Bayou and the Cajun culture. And there's something so spine tingling about a neglected antebellum  estate -- a house full of family secrets and Miranda is plunked down in the middle of it all.

Danger lurks in unexpected corners as she struggles to put the pieces of a fractured puzzle together -- and in the process come to grips with a family history she knew nothing about. In fact, Miranda has no recollection of the first five years of her life...until she arrives at Twin Oaks. Chilling and edgy and lots of over-the-shoulder checking as emotions are laid bare when Miranda asks too many questions. I was gasp-out-loud shocked more than once.

A compulsive read from start to finish.

  2. I read this book back when it was first published. I read a lot of Mindy Starnes Clark around that time. I remember liking it and have a vague recollection of it, I kind of want to read it again, but there's so many new books out now it probably will never happen. Have you ever read her five book Million Dollar Mysteries series? I thought they were very good!

    1. Oh and one other question, since you're such a voracious reader, I'm curious if you ever reread any of your books?

    2. I haven't read the Million Dollar Mysteries series yet. My library doesn't have the first one. :-( And I had a feeling they should be read in order? Should they be? Or can I just skip to book 2? I really like the way she writes a mystery!

I don't reread a whole lot. With the exception of True to You by Becky Wade which I read twice back to back recently. And I've read so many Connor scenes over and over again in The Promise of Breezehill that I think that could count as a reread. LOL

I tend to reread years later...so like I'm working my way through Dee Henderson's O'Malley series. And some of my favourite kid and YA books. But mostly I'm like you, trying to keep current with new releases.

    3. As best I can remember from when I read it (at least 500 books ago)I think each of Mindy's books could be read as stand alones, but read the summary for book one on amazon, which will lay some ground work for the series. Once you have that they do gradually build on the attraction between attorney Callie and the boss she helps give money away for. That would be a dream job, to give money to worthy people/causes. Kind of like you do Kav with books.
My fav Becky Wade book is Meant to be Mine, I haven't reread it but I want to.

And don't get me started on Breeze Hill! I'm still not over it. Like you, I reread so many pages while I was reading it I could almost consider it read twice. Some of the best rescue/attraction/kiss and almost kiss scenes I've read this year!

Dee's O'Malley series and Uncommon Heroes series are my favorites. She was out of publishing for a good while and her later stuff has a different feel. I've read most of them though, but may one day read some of the earlier stuff again. I could probably spend a year rereading all my favorite books, but then I'd be behind on anything that released in the reread year. Such reader problems ;)

    4. Oy -- you had to mention rescue/attraction/kiss and almost kiss scenes -- now I'm reaching for my Breeze Hill because I haven't shelved it yet which is something I always do once the book has been read and the review written. It's kind of a ritual...but I can't stand the thought of relegating Connor to the bookcase just yet. :-)

I'll check out the Million Dollar series then and I figured there was a developing romance threading through all the books but usually you don't miss a big part of that in the first one.

I'm with you on the reader problems -- a stress we just have to learn to live with -- reread or first read that is the question!

    5. Smiling because I haven't put Conner on the shelf either. He's still on my desk by my bed in case I need to revisit again here or there. Some of those pages can be read as stand alone pages, LOL.
